THIS VIDEO WORKS!! Saved me money and time thank you!! Newer Mac’s hold down finger authentication button (don’t need “command+R”), prompts you into recovery mode, 4 options come up ignore this. Top left find “utilities”, click “terminal”, a small coding box pops up, **make sure you’re connect to WiFi. Once connected, use coding box and type “resetpassword” hit enter, had to click “deactivate Mac”, then allowed me to click on my account id, and reset new password and hint 🎉 all my stuff still intact!!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

You’re an absolute life saver, my fiancé was typing in the correct password but for whatever reason it was saying it was incorrect. After many failed attempts from other videos this one hit the nail on the head and after following this simple guide we managed to reset her password and log back in! Now she can do her college homework again! Thank you times 100!!!

Just for clarity. Is this to reset the Imac Login or Apple password, mine are different. On updatibg to Ventura, my old password is not recognised and i cannot get back in. Do they now need to be the same thing, if so, i assume i will need to do a clean install and start again?

The e new macbooks uou just have to hold the power button down and then recovery settings come up and the utilities tab. I did the resetpassword thing and it let me reset it but then told me I had to reinstall os to disk so i clicked the second one down to install newest version now 50 min left im waiting . Just got two days ago all of sudden my password wouldnt work i hope this dont happen often with the new pros … i have no idea why my password stopped working .. frusturating i just hope its all ok when it comes Back on

I need help ! I've tried this method however after typing resetpassword the poped up screen does not show the current users i have ! Instead it showing two hard desks to select from and by choosing any it does not solve anything !
You’re the man. Ugh. That was making me so FN mad. I held the top right button on the brand new air that’s the power button to turn it back on other then that this video was a life saver. Apple support did not know. But it worked great. Brand new Mac book air 15 Minch with a M2 chip I could not get the prompt and either. This video on point. Hold the power button on restart the follow your password prompt and boom. All done Thank you.
I couldn’t get out from the secure boot and update OS, used the command ‘resetpassword’ and my laptop finally rebooted without any update 😊❤ thanx a bunch
Any ideas, when I press cmd+r it takes me to recovery, but no option to go into terminal, only option I have on screen is recovery mode. It fails to connect to apple servers for a password reset, if I click forgot Apple ID it says it’s not connected to WiFi (it is and no issues with WiFi) thanks

The Apple ID was my MILS old one, because I bought it from her and she couldn't remember it either. Just a few minutes and the problem was SOLVED!!

I followed the first part of the instructions, then it went to Reset Password screen. It is a MacBook model A1534 which was my daughter's and it is password protected. She passed away 2.5 years ago. I went through Apple and successfully filed through the Legacy account and had her Apple id account deleted (per Apple tech support) and now I want to add the device to my apple account. Suggestions?

I have a 2015 Mac book air. It wouldn't let me update to the newest software update. So I put it away and got a new 2021 MacBook Pro. I am trying to get logged into the older Mac book now to sell. It keeps asking for a disk utility password, I have no idea what that is. I follow all of these instruction leads me to the reset password page but there is no user to select so I cannot move past this page. Any ideas?
When i get to the recovery assistant, it doesnt show utilities or anything up in the top left. It still asks me for my password to get through and i dont have my filevault either. Any suggestions?

correction: for new MacBooks with M1 and later chips you need to hold the fingerprint power button+CMD+R
