  • Is the Canon R5 still going to remain on top in 2023?! We'll just have to see what comes this year from Canon, and in the meantime, let's talk about just how amazing this camera is. In this video, I discuss my hands on experience with the Canon R5 since it was released back in 2020. I also cover a few more price friendly but comparable options provided by Canon, and whether you should invest in the Canon R5 in 2023.

    Really enjoyed your long term R5 review Jay. I started shooting film in 1967 and digital in 2003 and while nothing has changed on the interaction between , ISO , aperture and shutter speed between 1967 and now my R5 is like something from science fiction which I couldn’t even have imagined back then, hell I was shooting movies on my dads clockwork 8mm Filmo Sportser . Photoshop, video editing bloody brilliant compared to the chemicals and glueing film together !! I’m retired and after 56 years still enjoy the whole process as much as I did back then, I hope you do when you are my age ! I have the R7 as my number2 body. Cheers from New Zealand BTW R5’s are US$ 4100 here body only including all taxes.

      Chris, thank you so much for sharing about your journey in the industry! That’s super fascinating to me, and I have a tremendous amount of respect for anyone that processed film prior to the digital development of cameras and editing! So much work that goes into that process, and you have to absolutely love it to stick with it that long!

      @@Jay_Fritts in no particular order. Great autofocus, ibis, great battery life, sensor cover on power down, three custom functions unique to video and photo, two slots (not bothered about redundancy but one card photo, one video). Very very customisable. Photos look as good as they’ve always looked but the video looks so good. £1100 just can’t be touched by the competition. I’ve got a speedbooster a meike nd ef mount and a standard canon (wish I’d seen the meike control ring for the same price). I’ve got a sigma fp (£900) great for money shots and the r7 to just grab everything without having to concentrate too much. Just avoid the highlights and raise shadows in post. You can make it look as good as anything just by using it sensibly. Got a sigma art 30 1.4 on it mostly and an old ef 24-85 3.5-4.5. Oh and an efs 55-250 with silent autofocus and crazy light for its reach. Oh wait. The feel and weight of the camera is perfect. Oh and customisable zebras work great too. One big difference you missed between the R6 and the R5 is that the R5 is twice as fast in terms of the readout speed, hence better rolling shutter. One of the main reasons why i switched to the R5 (they improved it on the R6 Ii). The R6 rolling shutter is noticeably worse in 24 and 30fps in 4K.

    The canon R5 will not overheat shooting stills 100% never, it’s a warning light that tells you that you could overheat if you switch to video mode that’s it. I had the light come on once and it did worry me but you can switch that light to show only for video mode no one likes looking at a warning flash while shooting. I repeat the canon R5 will never overheat in stills mode.

    Been shooting Canon since the 70's and have quite the collection of FD lenses, which led me to Sony's mirrorless A7R series body...this got me spoiled with the lightness when hiking. The FD lenses perform really well on the digital body with a simple adapter. On the digital side, I went from the 5D2 to the 5D4, using Canon's 'L' lenses. The 5D4 and L bracket started to get heavy towards the end of my recent Yellowstone trip. Just picked up an R5 on the used market along with the EF/R adapter ring...didn't plan on buying into the 'R' lenses since I'm looking to retire. Can't wait to get my hands on it. Question on the Smallrig...does it allow for portrait orientation in an Arca-Swiss clamp? I didn't notice a full dovetail on the vertical face of the Smallrig.

      Thanks for the backstory on your career in photography!! So cool to hear about! 😃 I’ll link a similar cage to what I have that has a slightly wider vertical mount, but I’m not sure if they have one with a much wider vertical frame just for sake of interfering with the cameras ergonomics… but maybe you can get a better look from the pictures they provide!

    Here is my delema... Wait for the Canon R5 MkII or go with the Sony A7R5
    I have been rocking my Canon 7Dmkii for a long time and i am finally looking to upgrade to a full frame mirrorless camera. I'm not committed to brands as I only have a few EF-s lenses for my 7D2, so switching to Sony wouldn't be detrimental to me. I want a full frame mirrorless camera with all the bells and whistles and something that has great dynamic range/ high resolution, and great low light abilities. Ill be using it for hybrid shooting, so 50/50 with stills and video. Im shoot mostly landscape and astrophotography/low light street photography. As well as video. I have no budget limit as ive been saving up for a looong time. I've used the canon R5 and loved it, But i have a buddy that has a sony a7r5 and I also loved it! With the parameters provided above, do you think I should buy the Sony a7r5 now or wait to see what the Canon R5Mkii will be? What ecosystem should I go with? Any personal incite would be appreciated. Cheers!

    • @Jay_Fritts
      @Jay_Fritts  Год назад

      Hey man! Love all the details, thanks for sharing! You bring up a lot of good points and to be honest, you wouldn’t go wrong either way! I am someone that used to run a mirrorless Sony as my primary camera back when Canon wasn’t releasing many video centric cameras, and I really enjoyed the Sony! (It was a Sony a6500)
      I ultimately hung on to Canon because I always wanted a 1DX II or a Canon 5DIV… eventually I got the 5DIV and I fell in love with the camera and it solidified my decision to stick with Canon, even though it’s video specs weren’t quite up to par. Since then, with the r5, c70, r6II, r8, etc. Canon is showing a lot of hybrid focus, and I’m really excited to see what the r1 brings.
      One thing I will say about your situation is that you’re shooting a lot of low light and street photography which is where Sony rains supreme! For Landscape I prefer Canon but that’s just my preference. Honestly Sony and Canon are so similar nowadays, it’s up to your opinion on which interface you prefer, and I personally have always liked Canon’s interface more than Sony’s! Hopefully this helped 😂🙌🏼

I do notice the camera getting warm when I’m shooting nonstop in the heat, however I always shoot 4K in either 24, 60, or 120 and I haven’t had overheating issues in the last year(ish) since their firmware update that helped resolve the overheating. If you’re primarily focused on video, and don’t mind giving up in body stabilization, the R5C would give you more peace of mind!

    Hi, I actually just bought a Canon EOS R5, and noticed noise on the photos.
    I am using ISO not more than 400. Is it something to do with my lens? I am using my EF LENS 85mm 1.2
    I, now, try to avoid using higher aperture like 1.2 or 1.4 as when I take photos, the part that is not in focus produce more noise. I am wondering what causes it to produce noise. I felt bad about the fact that I spent more than 6k including insurance for such a very expensive camera and then ended up getting noise on my photos. Soooo, I don’t know what’s going on there. Do you have any idea why Canon R5 produce noise. Thank you so much, your response will be greatly appreciated. 😊

    • @Jay_Fritts
      @Jay_Fritts  Год назад

      Hey! That’s a great question and I’m sorry that you’re dealing with such an annoying issue! I actually of the same EF 85mm f1.2, and have paired it with my R5 many times! I’ve never noticed a tremendous amount of noise on that setup, so I’m not sure what could be causing it… especially with a lower ISO, as I’ve pushed that lens past 800 ISO and haven’t noticed extreme grain. I wish I could be more help, but I would recommend calling Canon directly and talking with their tech support! If you aren’t noticing that with any other lenses, I imagine it’s a lens issue… if it’s with other lenses too, then I assume it could either be something with the camera or the settings!

    Good health! I completely agree with you, it's an excellent and technological camera and it's a pleasure to shoot with it. But when paying for labor in Putin's Russia for a working 5-day month of $ 380, how long will it take to accumulate on R5? Be kind !

      HAHAHA! Hey I’m glad you’re stoked about that camera! I’m a fan of having more room for crop, and a nicer price point with the r5 ;) I’d rather wait for the R1!

    Nope, the R3 is really a better camera than this.

      Debatable ;) I haven't used the R3 so I can't speak from hands on experience, however I was obsessed with the idea of the R3 until I realized it's just an overpriced Canon R6 with a built in battery grip and faster shooting speeds... I see value in the unreleased R1, but honestly I feel the R3 let me down a bit because their primary selling features were the different autofocus tracking modes (vehicles, animals, people, etc.) But now the R5 even has those features from just a firmware update. Glad you like it though man!

      @@Jay_Fritts the R3 has far better DR and high ISO performance than the R6 (or R6 II). I'd rate the R3 over the R5 or R6/II unless you really require mega pixels and crop heavy. If you shoot sports or wildlife, the rolling shutter of the R5/6 is well...annoying AF.

      @@davepastern that’s very interesting! Do you know the dynamic range difference in stops between the r3 and r5?? I will say, in my personal workflow I utilize the larger megapixels all the time, especially for wildlife and product work! Reframing an image is huge for me, and I’ve tried the workflow of enlarging images from smaller sensor cameras, but the extra workflow can become a hassle in bulk. Just my experience from my use! I’d love to try out the r3 thought to see how I like it!

      @@Jay_Fritts IMHO, about a stop DR between the 2 cameras. Part of that will be due to the larger pixel sizes, and part of it will be due to the stacked BSI sensor design of the R3.
