  • In this video, Paul shows how he showers without assistance. Stroke survivors are often unsteady on their feet and need to be conscious of their movements. Paul shows how he sets up his environment in a way that makes the most sense for him to shower.
Things we used to set up Paul's shower:
    1. Grab bars: amzn.to/37YbM5D
    2. Longer grab bars: amzn.to/2v0Y6sa
    3. Shower anti-slip tape: amzn.to/2txtOgm
    4. Hand-held shower head: amzn.to/3b8ZN7r
    5. Long-handled Loofah: amzn.to/36YeEyi (Paul likes this one better than the wooden handled one we originally purchased. This has a loofah on one side and a brush on the other side)
    6. Suction hook to hang your loofah: amzn.to/2Sjj6SN
    7. Soap and Shampoo dispenser: amzn.to/2vHLYMX (Paul prefers the bottles now, but we have this in our hall bathroom and it has stayed up for 1.5 years so far without coming off the wall)
    8. Soap Dish: amzn.to/2RVBK4m (Paul uses this to put his washcloth on and then put soap on the washcloth if he's poring soap from a bottle)

My 73 year old father endured a fall about 8 months ago that resulted in a spinal fusion and a broken right shoulder. He was released from rehab last week and is having a tough time figuring out hope to perform some tasks independently, including bathing and drying afterward. I’m sending this video along to him to help him feel empowered to do this on his own. Thank you so much for sharing the steps you take, they’re helping us learn new approaches to our challenges!

Having had a stroke in November 2019 I've just started standing up in my shower,I'm right hand side affected and found putting the shampoo in a hand soap with descender top has allowed me to not use a shower chair anymore......just starting to watch your videos....very inspirational.....but for me the suction grab rails don't work and I use my three legged walking stick in the shower to steady myself....

Can I ask how you wash the non-affected side with the affected side? I just recently got arm paralysis due to a surgery complication, and have been using one arm but it has been difficult. I still do not know how to wash my not affected arm with the affected arm.

We have not had any issues with the suction handles. You have to make sure that if you have tile, the ends are directly on the tile instead of on a groove, like where the grout is so that you get a good suction grip. The description for this video has been updated with the things we got on Amazon to set up the shower.
