This has helped me so much with my college project, I love the way you explain everything so clearly. Thank you! You are a great teacher! Also, your nails look beautiful.

Why is there not a "love" button for RUclips? This video solves ALL the zipper problems I'm having right now! I'm basically self-taught and default to using the machine for all of my stitches. It's so easy to forget that hand stitching is often the much better choice!
Thank you so very much for posting this video. I have sewn for over 20 years and today was the first time I installed an invisible zipper. If I didn't have your video I would have never got my project finished. Keep up the great work, you are awesome!
I just wanted to say a huge thank you for this wonderful tutorial. I have been sewing for 15 years and dreaded to attempt the invisible zipper. However, after watching your video tutorial I felt quietly confident in having a go and...I did it! Finally, I can sew my daughter a dress to wear at her upcoming party. Thank you once again for such an indepth tutorial. Many regards from England.
You are amazing! A wonderful, clear, knowledgeable teacher. Thank you so much for sharing. You have made it possible for me to sew again, and with no intimidation. Everything is very clear.😊
Before sewing, seal polyester zipper end tabs (no cotton) by cutting them off w/hot scissors or soldering iron to prevent raveling as well as eliminating the hassle of folding it to sew into the garment creating more bulk. To prevent melting plastic zipper stops &/or teeth, use a thin spacer like a metal ruler or knife blade between teeth & line of cutting ...
all your videos are great. but this one is one of the best I have seen. you gave so much valuable information, I know it is long but it was so precise there is no way I can mess this up. keep them coming, this video gets 2 thumbs up.
JHONATTANFF The 1/4 inch seam allowance is for regular zipper installation. The stitching line is super close to the zipper teeth in an invisible zipper installation.
Aaah! This is the first time I've seen anyone else have those weird interchangeable plastic sewing feet! And now I actually know what all those parts are for. (I've kinda inhereted my mom's sewing stuff since she doesn't use them anymore)
Thank you so much for this tutorial - I"m discovering all of your tutorials now for the first time (I'm an amateur at sewing =) self-taught!) and this has helped so much. Zippers were always tricky for me and this explained invisible zippers so well - thanks again!

Now i know i have the idea on how to sew an invisible zipper. I never tried it because i think it would going be untidy. Your tutorials make it seem easy. thanks so much
Great video! Very informative. I would never have been able to sew my invisible zipper into my dress using only the instructions that came with my pattern. Thank-you! :)

I like your sewing machine, in that it has a nice speed that is not so fast. What model is it? I enjoy your videos-the are very clear. You are a great teacher and you are able to anticipate where a person may have difficulty and therefore making it very clear to avoid confusion..
+Kittyququmber In this video, I'm using the husqvarna lily 530. I don't think they make this model anymore but sometimes I see them pop up on ebay. I've had it for almost 20 years and husqvarna makes really good sewing machines
@@PeaceandLove3236 My Dressmaking & Design program says to put the zipper in at the earliest possible stage while the garment is still flat. Through trial and error, I learned that does not mean before the lining and self pieces are sewn right sides together at the neck and armhole. There should be 7 pieces- 2 back pcs for the self and for the lining or facing/lining unit, one front piece for the self and for the lining, then the inv. zipper is the 7th. Sew the self RS TOG at the shoulder. Then do the same for the lining. If the self and lining pieces are sewn RS TOG at the neckline and armhole [neckline sewn in a continuous seam from center back (CB) to CB, and each armhole sewn side (S) to side] WITHOUT connecting the sides, each back lining pc can be carefully pulled through its corresponding shoulder, flipping the lining or facing/lining unit so that the wrong side WS of the lining faces the WS of the self fabric. At this point, the curves of the neck and armhole seam allowances S.A. need to be clipped and understitched as far as possible. Press. Then the zipper needs to be attached to the self CB (assuming the CB has already been interfaced). Then hand sew in any hooks and eyes at the top of the zipper tape and hand sew the lining to the zipper tape neatly and out of the way of the teeth. Test by opening and closing the zipper. Next, sew the front side seam to the back side seam in a continuous seam. (Each seam will have one part self one part lining. It'll look funny, but it's correct.) Do the same for the other side, pressing seams open throughout. The only thing left should be to hem. Finished hem of lining should be 1/2" to 1" shorter than the finished hem of the self fabric. This works best for light- to medium-weight fabric, especially cotton and cotton blends, broadcloth. Keep in mind that the thicker and stiffer the fabric, the more unsuitable the technique of pulling the lining through the shoulders. If you have further questions, please ask. I'm happy to share what I have learned.
Great video but need tutorial on how to attach the lining to dress after installing the invisible zipper and sewing the lining to the zip...pleez thanks

Great video! I have one question though: So if you added the lining at the end after sewing the invisible zipper to your garment, what was the white fabric on the inside? Do you add another lining into the dress? That is the only thing that I'm trying to understand. Other than that, thank you SO much for this tutorial!
Oh ok I see, that makes sense. So if I understand you correctly, you DO add the lining to the garment after you sew the invisible zipper to the dress. Thank you again!
I am glad you covered how to do a lining except my dress is a true vintage from 1950s it had a beautiful satin waist and ribbon in front so I am taking it in the back where the zipper is and cutting it up the back. IT has a fold over one side of the zipper that is tailored so well. so... I think this is the best idea. Wish me luck.
another great tutorial...great nails my gf loves them..you are a awesome teacher...I'm making her a skirt ,so this is a very important video for me..very best wishes,,Bill a man who sews
I was wondering, if you use the reference lining for your zipper (the red/orange one) don't you skip a part of your seam allowance? or... besides that, perfect tutorial! gonna try it now haha ^^
are you talking about the basting stitch I did at the beginning in the contrasting color? I just did that at my seam line. So if yours is 1cm seam allowance then do it at 1cm. Just use the longest stitch length on your machine to make it a basting stitch
Excellent Video Tutorial! Thanks! Have you ever done a sleeveless dress with lining by sewing shoulders of both lining and dress, then armholes, then somehow pulling lining through shoulders? I used to do that years ago and have forgotten how. It was so easy, the only two extra things to do were to sew in the zipper and hem. Thanks!
It's from coats. I got it from JoAnn's and it's usually hanging up by the zipper section: www.joann.com/singer-invisible-zipper-foot-use-with-candc-art-f84/1033018.html?gclid=CP_i95CR4M4CFUGTfgodH14KdQ
I know the video is a little old but I have two questions 1. I observed you didn't back stitch when you started from the teeth part of the zipper ?am I supposed to back stitch? 2. What is I want to use the machine to sew the lining to the centre back and not hand sewn ?
if you machine stitch the lining to the zipper tape, it'll show on the right side of the dress. I'm not saying you can't do this, but it may turn out looking sloppy.
how will it not show? the machine stitching will go through all layers of fabric and make a mark. You certainly can do it, but the slip stitching looks much better; cleaner and more professional
La Talullah - It's a bit fiddly (and hard to explain without pictures) but it's possible. Basically you turn the whole thing inside out through an opening where the dress and lining aren't yet attached and sew just the seam allowances of the backseam/zipper and the lining together. Personally, I've always handstitched it in place, but then I enjoy a bit of handsewing every now and then. Most people do it by machine though.
What if you still have an unfinished neck facing attached to the top of your neckline? Does this change the zipper placement of 3/4" down from the top?
Great video! However I was a little confused. Which was actually the lining, the white fabric or the spotty fabric. Also you didn't show the inside of the dress at the top to see how you finished of the zip at the neck edge. Thank you :)
Thank u for a very clear instruction 😍😍😍👏👏 is there any way except hand stitching to attach lining in a zipper? Because i have numb fingers and it will take a long time to do hand stitching. And and do you also have other tutorial to attach zipper, lining and neckline area? Thank you for a great youtube channel 🙌🙌
The reason why you don't machine stitch the lining in place, is because then you'll have two rows of stitches on the right side of the garment next to the zipper and it might not look the neatest. If this doesn't bother you, then you could just machine stitch instead of hand sewing. This is the only tutorial we have that's like this. Thanks!
in this tutorial, I'm using an invisible zipper and then an invisible zipper foot attachment. the attachment is usually in the same department as the zippers
I recommend it, if they're long enough that's they've been folded up in the package and they come out all bendy. If you don't though, it's not going to hurt anything.
So that's how dresses hide their invisible zippers in the inside :D Great tutorial! I'll be making my bridesmaid dress, and I do have a question that maybe can be answered. What zipper length is recommended for a strapless floor length dress? Any tutorials on that topic would be great, too. I'm assuming 14" or shorter because it will be starting from my mid back, but I'm not sure. That and Joann's only carries 7-8", 12-14" and 20-22". Thank you in advance :D
the zipper is really to help you get over the widest point, which for most people is the hips. You can measure someone from their mid back to their hips and that should give you a rough idea on how long the zipper will need to be.
I'd say less than 1/4". the orange basting stitch is on the seam line and the white stitch position is controlled by the universal invisible zipper foot.
+Adrien Arce before the lining is attached to the zipper, it should already be attached to the bodice, and this is usually at the neckline. So you place bodice and lining together, right side to right side. (The center back seam of the lining should at least be turned under your seam allowance.) Line up the neckline and stitch your seam. Turn the lining to the inside and now you can hand sew the lining to the zipper. Hope this makes sense.
I was wondering why you turned the dress inside out when you went to sew the second side of the zipper but then you attached the right side of the zipper to the right side of the fabric? Great video though....
why did you start sewing 3/4" from the top of the dress? Won't there be a gap from the top of the zip to the neckline closure? Could the zip not start at the neckline?
because the top of the dress is unfinished so when I put in a lining or facing, it's going to cut into the top of the neckline as part of the seam allowance
Okay, I've been using an invisible zipper foot, however every zipper I put in is almost impossible to zip up. I think the thread is too close to the teeth, however it doesn't look it. Do you have any suggestions that I should try?
Does the zipper work perfectly before you sew it in? I've definitely have had issues with the nylon zippers with them getting stuck when all I did was just take it out of the package. Definitely zip it up a few times to make sure you don't have a defective one before sewing it in. If it did work fine, then it probably is the stitches are just a little too close.
This is the most understandable video of invisible zippers I have seen. I like your nails, they don't distract to me.
No one had explained the hidden zipper as good as you... This is great.
Thank you so much for the kind words :)

Professor Pincushion did you sew next to the zipper teeth/coil? aren't you supposed to sew like 1/4 inch away? am i missing something?
JHONATTANFF the invisible zipper foot really controls the distance of the stitch, because the groove fits over the zipper teeth.

How did you sandwich the top of the lining with the main fabric without it bulking.
Instead of measuring for the second side of the zipper, you could zip it back up and pin the second side down. This way it's exactly lined up.

if you machine stitch the lining to the zipper tape, it'll show on the right side of the dress. I'm not saying you can't do this, but it may turn out looking sloppy.
Oh i see, thankyou
susan candlin yes you can. No it will not show on the outside of the dress. Work from the inside.

You can measure someone from their mid back to their hips and that should give you a rough idea on how long the zipper will need to be.
oh I see. thank you :D I will keep that in mind once I reach that part!
How far away is the orange basting stitch from the white seam allowance stitches?
I'd say less than 1/4". the orange basting stitch is on the seam line and the white stitch position is controlled by the universal invisible zipper foot.
How did you attach the lining at the neckline with the zipper?
+Adrien Arce before the lining is attached to the zipper, it should already be attached to the bodice, and this is usually at the neckline. So you place bodice and lining together, right side to right side. (The center back seam of the lining should at least be turned under your seam allowance.) Line up the neckline and stitch your seam. Turn the lining to the inside and now you can hand sew the lining to the zipper. Hope this makes sense.
so we should attach the lining first before finally attach the zipper in?
sew the zipper to the outer garment first then attach your lining and hand sew the lining to the zipper tape on the inside
Thx
marie walker. gmail message from you and the family
great . thank u for ur effort . please can u make the videos a little short . because the long time make the thing difficult
Do I need a skirt lining or is it possible to sew the zip to the dress without a skirt lining?
Nadia A you can sew a zipper in, without a skirt lining. You'll just see the raw seam allowance on the inside of the dress.
okay, thank you so much, this is really helpful for my textiles coursework
I was wondering why you turned the dress inside out when you went to sew the second side of the zipper but then you attached the right side of the zipper to the right side of the fabric? Great video though....
Great tutorial.
how much seam allowance to you give for the zipper?
Mary Sinclair 5/8"
why did you start sewing 3/4" from the top of the dress? Won't there be a gap from the top of the zip to the neckline closure? Could the zip not start at the neckline?
because the top of the dress is unfinished so when I put in a lining or facing, it's going to cut into the top of the neckline as part of the seam allowance
What if your lining is attached to the dress and not just free floating fabric?
Okay, I've been using an invisible zipper foot, however every zipper I put in is almost impossible to zip up. I think the thread is too close to the teeth, however it doesn't look it. Do you have any suggestions that I should try?
Does the zipper work perfectly before you sew it in? I've definitely have had issues with the nylon zippers with them getting stuck when all I did was just take it out of the package. Definitely zip it up a few times to make sure you don't have a defective one before sewing it in. If it did work fine, then it probably is the stitches are just a little too close.
Great video I appreciated it a lot because it will help me..
