HOW TO insert invisible zipper perfectly! STEP-BY-STEP tutorial

  • Dear Sewing Friends, in this video I would love to guide you through my process of inserting invisible zipper perfectly every single time. I will show you step-by-step what I do and how I do it, so that hopefully you can achieve the same result. You can use this same technique on a variety of projects! 2 things to note - 1) usually I would add interfacing to the waistband, but this is a nice stretch cotton and a skirt is for a child, so I decided to skip it. 2) I did not add a "hook and eye" closure, which you would usually see used on the skirts with invisible zipper for that same reason.

    THANK YOU for including a waistband explanation!!! every other tutorial I see either doesn't have a waistband, OR the waistband is already there with no explanation as to how it's attached/finished with the zipper. this was exactly what I needed!!!!

    Thanks, Alisa! I was having trouble with the zipper on the dress I'm wearing to a wedding next week, so I watched your video. Now my zipper is perfect! The game-changing trick was machine-basting the seam closed and then hand-basting the zipper onto the seam allowance.
    Truly invisible, and straight. Really appreciate your guidance.

    I use the same method, but instead of using a machine basting stitch for the entire length of the seam, I stop the basting where the zipper opening will end, as where the hand basting ends as shown in the video. Just be sure to mark that point accurately. Then I change to a regular stitch length for the seam below the zipper. The next step will be the hand basting, then proceed as shown in the video. It's a bit simpler that way. Also, she didn't mention this, but the zipper should be a bit longer than the actual zipper opening for this method to work.
    To cut off the excess zipper, sew across the end of the zipper right through the teeth, just sew slowly back and forth a couple of times. Then cut off the excess length below the stitching.
    This is really the best video ive seen on inserting invisible zippers!

    This is such a clear and easy tutorial, thank you! I've used your method now a couple of times and it's so much faster than the traditional way of inserting an invisible zipper. Additionally, I like to backtack and change to a smaller stitch length already from the first center back basting - saves another step & I otherwise didn't manage to sew neatly close to the inserted zipper later on. Again thanks so much for teaching us simple & well working methods, Alisa! ❤

    Yaaaasss!!! Hidden zippers!!! I absolutely LOATHE the fast fashion trend of exposed zippers on garments where they think they're fashionable. NO! You just don't want to take the extra time and skill to do a zipper properly, you just want to do it fast and cheap but say it's fashion and charge more for it.

    • @ThoughtfulCreativity
      @ThoughtfulCreativity  Год назад

      Nadine, you need to put tutorials like puzzle pieces together to achieve what you want. It really is that simple. 1) draft an A-line skirt without ease at the waist (so that way you don't have too much extra room), per that tutorial that you already used. You can also make an A-line skirt form a circle skirt or from a pencil skirt, tutorials and Instruction sheets are there for Members 2) cut the back pattern piece with a seam down the center back so you can add a zipper 3) use this tutorial to draft a waistband - (you don't need a zipper fly, just the waistband) - ruclips.net/video/en_kRF9gaoA/видео.html
      You can also use this tutorial to draft an A-line skirt - ruclips.net/video/X09PvstolkQ/видео.html
      To understand how to use tutorials and put them together, watch this Members Extra - ruclips.net/video/roZdNYvMpZU/видео.html

      Susanna, hello there - I did an invisible zipper in a denim skirt once, but the denim was a bit lighter than your regular denim for the jeans. How about doing a lapped zipper at the side seam? Or, is there a pocket in this skirt? You might be able to hide zipper in a pocket, too.

    • @ThoughtfulCreativity

      This is what I would do: google your machine brand and what zipper foot you're looking for. I just have a regular metal invisible zipper foot - nothing special. Take a look which ones are for which machines. Once you know which one you want you can either find one on Amazon, at your local fabric/sewing store, at your local sewing machine dealer, online directly from the sewing machine distributor.
