I am absolutely delighted to have found this video. The instructions are so clear and concise and the camera angle doesn’t miss a detail. I followed the tutorial step by step for my first zipper and the result is perfect. Thank you 👌👍😄
Hi thanks for the video. Nice and clear.. are you able to expand on how to do without a seam? So just cutting into the back of a dress for example. Thank you
OMG Ive been searching for your video for so long as i didn't save it the first time i watched. So glad I've found you. Great video and love your voice
Hello! Could you kindly do a tutorial on best technique to add an exposed zipper but without a seam? I an really struggling. Love your videos so helpful and very well explained
A friend asked me to make a skirt for her--and to maybe try an exposed zipper on it. In all my years of sewing, I always went to great lengths to HIDE zippers. Imagine my consternation at this request. Well, after watching this tutorial, I must say it sounds like a really fun idea, and I'll practice first. Wish me luck! hahaa!
Obviamente no entiendo ni papa, pero como no me es extraño el trabajo, sigo sus enseñanzas, lo único que no conozco es la tira esa delgadita parece como cinta de doble cara pero no sé que es.Gracias por sus vídeos.
You don't want to sew directly next to the teeth or you won't see any of the zipper tape. So I add a little to each side to accommodate this. You don't have to do 3/8", you can do whatever you prefer.
I'm putting a zipper in a self-drafted skirit and added 3/4 inch for the 7-inch section of my back center seam where the zipper goes. I'm just wondering why you didn't do that on yours. Is it because it's a test garment? I would do all of this, adding the interfacing to that extra section, to put in the zipper, right? Or wrong?
Debbe Geiger This is just a demo, not an actual garment. I usually only leave extra room at the top of the zipper to make room for the waistband or facing piece. Whatever way works for you, I'd stick with that :)
nope, the seam allowance is actually the same. I take what will show on the zipper tape and minus that amount from the pattern seam allowance. So if the pattern is saying the zipper seam has a 5/8" seam allowance and I want 1/4" of the zipper tape to show on each side, I just minus 1/4 from 5/8 and that's why I might sew a 3/8" seam allowance instead of the 5/8, so it all comes out even in the end. Hope that helps!
I didn't know how to sew an exposed zipper, but now I do all thanks to your lovely video. I was just wondering if you have to use a zipper foot and if I was to sew a invisible zipper, would I be able to use this kind of zipper?
It depends on how close to the zipper teeth you need to sew. If you're far enough away you might be able to get away with using a regular foot. You should be able to use any type of zipper you want for this technique. Although, with an invisible zipper, you won't see the zipper teeth so it just depends on what kind of a look you're going for.
there could be a few different options. You can put in the lining before the zipper, and baste the zipper seam area, attaching the lining and outer shell fabric together. Then put in the zipper, treating the fabric as one. it works, you'll just have raw edges showing on the inside. Or put in the lining after the zipper. the zipper seam of the lining should be folded under the seam allowance prior. Then handstitch the folded edge of the lining's zipper seam to the back of the zipper tape. the latter is the neater option but more work. good luck!
I cannot find double-sided tape that is safe to sew through anywhere. What exact tape are you using? Or where can I find it? Thank you so much for all of your videos. They are clear and concise. I am learning so much.
Thank you! I had purchased EZ Fix Tape and Sewing & Crafting Tape. Neither of which will go well with machine needles. I didn't realize there were so many different tapes! Thanks again & great video. I'm sure i've watched it at least 10x trying to get this right. :D
wonderful video! I just have one question, do I have to use interfacing? I am making an exposed zipper on an arm bracer/warmer for a Scarlet Witch (From Avengers: Age of Ultron) Cosplay which is black and has a gold exposed zipper.
if the fabric has enough stability, meaning it's not too flimsy, you can probably skip the interfacing. Or you can use a temporary stabilizer, like a washaway kind if your fabric can get wet. So you put the stabilizer on, for putting in the zipper and then wash it away when you're done.
I picked mine up from JoAnn's but it was discounted so I don't know if it was being phased out. you can find a bunch here: www.shopjoya.com/search.aspx?searchterm=decorative%20zipper
+Nikki Bluford yes, but I wouldn't do it for four way stretch fabric, but something like a two way stretch jersey or a knit that's not too stretchy should be ok.
+Professor Pincushion Thanks for the response. What would you recommend for a four way stretch? I have a costume I need to put a zipper in and the fabric is a four way. :(
+Nikki Bluford do you want to see the zipper? I would definitely stabilize the area with interfacing to make it easier. You can just do a regular zipper or do an invisible zipper, if you want it to be not be as noticeable.

A trick: watch movies at Flixzone. Been using them for watching a lot of movies during the lockdown.
@Winston Corey Definitely, I have been watching on flixzone for months myself :D

Could you please explain what oyu mean by 3/8 measurement. And thanks for the video amazing

☺very nice and easy thank you...,but will this technique make my garment 3/8's smaller (across my back) where the zipper is installed .?
nope, the seam allowance is actually the same. I take what will show on the zipper tape and minus that amount from the pattern seam allowance. Never saw this zipper foot .... Where do you get it? On Amazon they only have the normal one or the invisible one
mine came with my machine. there are different types of zipper feet so you don't have to use the exact one I'm using.

Professor Pincushion Thanks a million! I'll try it out.xxx
Please how do you deal with if the dress or skirt has lining. I'm just wondering what it should look like if there is lining inside. Thank you
there could be a few different options. You can put in the lining before the zipper, and baste the zipper seam area, attaching the lining and outer shell fabric together. Should the edges be finished before installing? Im working on a dress with brocade, chiffon and liner
yes, you can finish the edge prior but you can probably skip it if you're putting in a lining as the lining will cover up the raw edges anyway
I cannot find double-sided tape that is safe to sew through anywhere. What exact tape are you using? Or where can I find it? Thank you so much for all of your videos. They are clear and concise. I am learning so much.
the brand name for the one I used is called Wonder Tape. You should be able to find it in the notions department. I got mine at JoAnn's. :)

oops, too late. glad you got it figure out :)

Like how you did this one
Does this work for stretch fabric?
+Nikki Bluford yes, but I wouldn't do it for four way stretch fabric, but something like a two way stretch jersey or a knit that's not too stretchy should be ok.
