If only I had watched this BEFORE I tried to do it myself! (My zipper is not hidden like yours.) Very clear instructions. Thank you. Will refresh my memory with this video before I try again.
THANK YOU for talking! Every other zipper tutorial I've watched is all music and no sound, even as they are sewing at angles only they know, with no explanation.
That was one of the best tutorials. You were thorough and explained everything clearly. I can tell a lot of thought went into this video. Thank you for sharing. ❤
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I am trying to sew some shorts for my daughter with no pattern except her favorite pair of shorts. She didn't want an elastic waistband and I was stumped on how to attach the zipper so it looked store bought. You are a life saver and she loves her new shorts
Thank you for this tutorial! I need to install a zipper fly in some pants I’m making and I had no clue how to do it. Your tutorial was super easy to understand and very clear! Thank you so much!
Thank you so very much for this detailed, educative and informative tutorial. I never made a fly zipper but was able to make one yesterday after watching this tutorial . God bless you!
I would think a flat felled seam would look very nice and professional. We will be releasing a flat felled seam tutorial soon. I'm hoping sometime next month. Thanks!
This is a great step by step to installing a zipper with a pattern and I can say also without a pattern. From watching this I was able to insert a zipper in a pair of pull up, flat front shorts that I had made for a granddaughter that did not like tugging them on. Thanks so much for all the help.
Thank you for a perfect tutorial, it's clear, to the point, nothing extra, nothing short, oh and I love the mani and how you matched it to your fabric :) Can't wait to check your other videos.
Most amazing tutorial! I have tons of sewing books, read many blog posts, and I even have an A.A. in Fashion Design and your tutorial was so great and refreshing my memory!
Omg you are an amazing teacher, I struggled so much to install the perfect fly after watching so many different tutorial. You are the only one that finally I understand and now I believe that I can finally do this. Thank you very much👍
this is an absolutely excellent tutorial! It has refreshed my memory as I had forgotten some bits on how to make a zipper fly, but it has all come back now, thank you!
Thank you thank you thank you! You saved me once again and I couldn't be more grateful for your wonderfully CLEAR videos you make. They're the best on RUclips.
YES! THANK YOU! Finally, a tutorial showing how to do a FLY zipper, not just a lapped zipper. Mens jeans/pants always have the under-zipper flap for that extra layer of.... preventative measure. :)
Your videos are so helpful! I have been too scared to try to sew anything with a fly zipper, but I feel like I can do it after watching this. Thank you!
Thank you very much for sharing. Deciphering written instructions was driving me nuts. Figuring out how to post comment was more difficult than inserting the zipper with your fabulous instruction.
Great video. It was very helpful. Can you comment on finishing the crotch seam from center back to center front when there is a fly in the pant? I was hoping to use a flat felled seam but I'm not sure if that will work.
Please note that if you are not confident it is just as easy to baste or tack the pieces by hand. This is often easier when sewing a zip because it is easier to ensure the edge of the fabric matches the middle of the zipper for concealment.
After staring at the pattern instructions for nearly 30 minutes and near tears, I found this video. Thank you so, so much for saving my sanity and making such a helpful, clear video.
Thanks so much!! I watched this so many times bc I'm using a different/older pattern and the zipper instructions are different, so I'm trying to improvise an easier way to sew this zipper!! This was definitely helpful!
This is great--thank you so much for the extreme detail. I followed along with my zipper step-by-step, and it came out looking perfect. I don't think I'll ever memorize how to insert a fly zipper so I've saved this tutorial to refer back to each time I attempt my next one.
Boy, you're good. If I was a beginner I'd be able to understand all of this. A good teacher tries to place themselves in the place of someone who has no idea of how to do this.
I've watched Sandra Betzina's method but that was a long time ago before RUclips. Yours is a lot better, you don't get complicated and seem to know what your viewers are looking for. Thanks again.
do you have a joann's near you? they sell both fusible and sew-in interfacing. But all fabric stores should carry it. If you can't find it, ask a sales associate. If you don't have a fabric store near you, you should be able to purchase it online
I love your channel! I hope one day you can do a Marfy pattern tutorial, an old vintage pattern or international magazine sewing pattern. It's very hard to find the basics on tackling these types of patterns because there are language barriers and/or lack of instructions. Having a video tutorial would be awesome!
Does this only happen when you wear it or after you've sewn it? I haven't had this issue but make sure your seam allowance is pulled up into your waistline and you're always pressing between steps. If it's happening when you wear it, it could be a sizing issue, like your crotch length is too long in the front.
wow. great shorts! is there any video tut on how to draft the zip fly pattern? I am just confused on how to make but gets lost when i do it. please? :)
Thanks so much, I just made a fly for a pair of pants using this technique! This was so easy to follow, I was even able to make my own pattern for the fly and underflap. I used a zig zag stitch to finish the raw edge cause I don't have a serger :) THANKS A BUNCH! :D
Thank you for the video. I have a question. Why do we need a zipper fly? I usually use invisible zippers. So far it looked good on the garments, but I haven't made any pants with zippers yet. I was under impression that the fly is used to hide the zipper, however if I'm using an invisible one, I should be able to just sew it on the pant leg itself. Am I missing something?
I learned a really easy way to edge finish the fly: Before fusing the fly and the interfacing, pin the right side of the fly to the wrong side of the interfacing. Sew a 1/4" seam around the curved edge. Clip the seam allowance, turn it so the wrong side of the fly is against the right side of the interfacing, and fuse the two together. It's really easy and gives a really nice finish.
Do you have the pattern available for download, and can denim fabric be used for it. I have been searching all over the web to find a pattern to make my own denim shorts from scratch, but I cant find a thing.
I'm 13 and I'm making pants for a cosplay and this tutorial was soooo helpful because I didnt know how to put on the zipper so it wouldn't show without using an invisible zipper. It was very easy to understand! Thanks
I do hope to have this tutorial eventually but it'll probably be part of our patternmaking series, which is currently only offered on our site. Make sure you register on our site so you can get the notifications of our new tutorials.
Love this video! Always come back to it. Just remember that if you are sewing men's zipper flies or jeans for both sexes you usually sew the fly the opposite way...
Great and easy explanations! Much easier than the instructions on a pattern!! Thanks so much!! I am trying Simplicity pattern 1430. Would be able to make a video on how to do the waistband for pants, and make button holes? Thanks!!!
Thank you for being so detailed and explaining everything! I am a fashion design student, about to be a junior, who wants to go into menswear, but we have only done womenswear in class... Therefore, I've never been confronted with a front fly zipper! Now I can practice before next semester. :)
Thank you for this amazing video! I sewed my fly front successfully! however, may I know the seam allowance of the flap and fly front on your pattern? I am doing my own pattern, so it'll be very helpful if I follow yours! Thank you!
hello! i love your channel so much. I have a pants pattern from simplicity. instead of attaching a zipper, i would like to change it to elastic waistband. Can you make a video showing how to do alteration to the pattern? thanks in advance!
This is a little difficult in that there are many factors to consider. Are you using stretchy fabric compared to non stretchy fabric? You'll notice that a pajama pant pattern is a bigger in the waistline and hipline area than a zipper pant pattern so there would be a lot of changes to be made. There are some cute elastic waist pants though like this one: mccallpattern.mccall.com/m6843-products-47790.php?page_id=114
Enable cc pretty please- love your other videos concise and succinct. I am deaf and working on Lutterloh pattern of dress pants & need direction for assembling front fly zipper.
Thank you so much for responding. Your videos are really helpful. I successfully made my first zipper fly. It's easier than i thought. Thanks for this tutorial.
Why did you sew the fly facing to the right side of the pants (as if wearing) - I've just checked all my clothes and it is on the left - the flap lifts so the right hand can easily undo the zip with the right hand?
i was taught in school that women's pants' fly facing should be stitched to the right side meanwhile left side for men though that rules doesnt really apply anymore
if you have a pair of pants with a fly zipper, you can use it as a guideline for creating your own pattern. You don't even have to take it apart, just lay some sheer fabric over the pieces and use chalk to help create an outline.
Hello, I am a professor at The University of Massachusetts preparing to teach my fashion design studio courses online due to the COVID19 social distancing measures put in place. I was hoping you could explain what type of equipment you use to record your videos. I have researching iPad mounts, tripods, etc...There is a lot out there and I was looking for some advise.
Many many thanks! Your great tutorial really helped me remembering how to sew a zipper fly ... I just didnt apply interfacing to the under flap once I was using a heavy fabric. Also, Id like to know the measurements of your fly and under flap pattern so I can compare to the patterns I have been drafting. Again...many many thanks!!
Wow, thanks so much for this tutorial!!! I was so frustrated with the instructions for the fly from the McCalls 7907 pants and this tutorial really helped me!
If only I had watched this BEFORE I tried to do it myself! (My zipper is not hidden like yours.) Very clear instructions. Thank you. Will refresh my memory with this video before I try again.
Thank you for explaining and showing how to sew in a zipper fly. Your instructions are clear and hand placement does not hide what you are doing.
glad you found it helpful
YOU ARE THE BEST EVER!!! I HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING YOU FOR YEARS AND YOU NEVER DISAPPOINT!
thank you so much for the kind words :)
THANK YOU for talking! Every other zipper tutorial I've watched is all music and no sound, even as they are sewing at angles only they know, with no explanation.

for the raw edge you can either do a zig zag stitch or if you have a serger you can use that. :)
You're welcome. I'm glad our video helped you out. :)
Thank you professor for this tutorial it's very helpful and neat.
this is an absolutely excellent tutorial! It has refreshed my memory as I had forgotten some bits on how to make a zipper fly, but it has all come back now, thank you!

Yes, definitely clip a notch at this point and it'll make doing this seam a lot easier.
Your videos are so helpful! I have been too scared to try to sew anything with a fly zipper, but I feel like I can do it after watching this. Thank you!
you can do it!

Love how your nails match your fabric!

wow. great shorts! is there any video tut on how to draft the zip fly pattern? I am just confused on how to make but gets lost when i do it. please? :)
Thank you! Why do you spray water before ironing the interface ?
Thanks so much, I just made a fly for a pair of pants using this technique! This was so easy to follow, I was even able to make my own pattern for the fly and underflap. I used a zig zag stitch to finish the raw edge cause I don't have a serger :) THANKS A BUNCH! :D

I don't know if it'll help, but we do have a few tips in our tutorial, working with knits. It's also on our channel. Have a nice day. :)
So, at the point at which the seam meets the fly, I would just have to clip the seam and end the flat felled finish at that point?
Thanks! glad you enjoyed it.
Sorry, we don't sell any patterns. You may be able to purchase a printable version of this pattern from New Look's website.
Wow! You are truly one of my favorites! You make things sewww simple!😃
+Sew Russia I'm so glad you're enjoying our channel :) thanks for the kind words
I learned a really easy way to edge finish the fly:
Before fusing the fly and the interfacing, pin the right side of the fly to the wrong side of the interfacing. Sew a 1/4" seam around the curved edge. Clip the seam allowance, turn it so the wrong side of the fly is against the right side of the interfacing, and fuse the two together. It's really easy and gives a really nice finish.
Thank you so much!!!!!! Omg best video out there! Really helped me out alot very detailed and to the point.
so glad you found this helpful :)
Best teacher! Lovely nails! Thanks!
i really appreciate ur method of teaching very nicely....... i love it
fantastic video. I've watched others but yours was definitely the easiest to follow! thanks again! :-)
Do you have the pattern available for download, and can denim fabric be used for it. I have been searching all over the web to find a pattern to make my own denim shorts from scratch, but I cant find a thing.
Thank you for such an easy and very clear video tutorial... o was always scared of sewing pants just because of zipper fly.. now it seems easy
You can do it! :)
I love this tutorial!!!! What pattern are you using?
It's New Look 6873 www.simplicity.com/p-2543-misses-skirts-and-pants.aspx
I'm 13 and I'm making pants for a cosplay and this tutorial was soooo helpful because I didnt know how to put on the zipper so it wouldn't show without using an invisible zipper. It was very easy to understand! Thanks
Gina Yu yay! so glad to help. Please post a pic on our fb wall when you finish your costume :D

Love this video! Always come back to it. Just remember that if you are sewing men's zipper flies or jeans for both sexes you usually sew the fly the opposite way...
Prof. Pincushion makes is it look easy.
Thank you for teaching me to putting on the zipper straight you are bless
with the modern nylon zips, they are self locking and can be shortened from the top which is much easier.
Great and easy explanations! Much easier than the instructions on a pattern!! Thanks so much!! I am trying Simplicity pattern 1430. Would be able to make a video on how to do the waistband for pants, and make button holes? Thanks!!!
Best teacher!!! Just love it!!!
aw, thank you for the kind words :)

What is the standard measurement of a fly pattern?
I don't think there is a standard as it may vary with the size and if it's a high waist or low waist. For this pattern, I'd say it's about 2 1/2" X 6"
Thank you so much for responding. Your videos are really helpful. I successfully made my first zipper fly. It's easier than i thought. Thanks for this tutorial.
Can you show how to attach the waistband? The zipper video was great. Thanks
Whats the pattern that she used? Is it Simplicity 6873?
where do you get the interfacing from? I haven't found any that you can sew in
Why did you sew the fly facing to the right side of the pants (as if wearing) - I've just checked all my clothes and it is on the left - the flap lifts so the right hand can easily undo the zip with the right hand?
i was taught in school that women's pants' fly facing should be stitched to the right side meanwhile left side for men though that rules doesnt really apply anymore
Hi. how do I create my own zipper fly pattern? Cuz we don't have already made patterns on this side of the world.
if you have a pair of pants with a fly zipper, you can use it as a guideline for creating your own pattern. You don't even have to take it apart, just lay some sheer fabric over the pieces and use chalk to help create an outline.

Thank you so much for teaching that!!!!😄❤️💋
Wow, thanks so much for this tutorial!!! I was so frustrated with the instructions for the fly from the McCalls 7907 pants and this tutorial really helped me!
what type of interfacing did you use?
Christian Cook
Could you show me sewing on a special design zipper ment to be placed on the right side
