    I bought an Abarth Cabriolet thinking it would be a temporary, inexpensive, yet fun car to hold me over 'til my next sports car. Well, I have fallen in love with it. I have now tuned it to over 200hp with simple bolt-on's, lowered it some and let me tell you, the Abarth corners better than my previous car - a 2002 911 Turbo! A tuned Abarth is about as much fun in the canyons as any car I've driven. Lame review.

    Always wanted a Mini. Test drove the Mini Cooper twice, within 5-7 years. It rode low, hard and shitty, Meh, Just not fun. Years later, Had to rent a car for two weeks while my transmittion was being replaced in my v6 Honda Accord and it was a Fiat 500. It was so much fun to drive! Went online to find out about the turbo Abarth. I own a 2013 Fiat Abarth and its the best car Ive ever owned.

    I have a 2013 Abarth and my friend has a Cooper S. We both love our cars and we respect the differences. I have more room in the Fiat, but you do sit higher. Both are more than fast enough, but the Cooper is half a second faster to 60....but with such a small difference, a good driver vs an average one can make that up easy. Inside materials are better quality on the Cooper...but almost nothing under 50K on the road sounds better than the Abarth. That car makes such sweet music! I smile every time I start it up! The Cooper cannot match it in the sound department. Overall, both are cool and take your pick! For me, I love the less refined, rough around the edges and always scrappy Fiat. You cannot have more fun for 23K.

    • @charlesjohnson8248
      @charlesjohnson8248 10 лет назад +1

      Sorry Zeke...check the stats. Only in 2014 did the classic mini cooper have more interior room. They widened and lengthened the model in 2014. 2013 or earlier, the Fiat has more room. That is a fact...prejudices and made up adjectives do not count!

    • @matthewagosto8005

      the sound I agree with. I belong to a Dart group which some of the Darts come with the 1.4t that came from the abarth. I unfortunately got into the market too late since all of the turbo manuals were gone in my area. But those friends that have them, that sound is just amazing!

    People continue to compare the Abarth to various models of Mini. In this video, they compare the 500c Abarth rather than the hard top because it normally costs 4K more. That kind of gets it up into the price range of the Mini Cooper S. What they don't tell you is that you can currently purchase a new 2013 hard top Abarth with all the bells and whistles for around $7K under invoice... right around $21K. Show me a Mini Cooper S that you can buy, with all the options, for anywhere under $30. You can't. So when you listen to the reviews, understand that they are comparing two cars that have about a $10K price difference. If they are going to do that, which is completely unfair to the Fiat, why not compare the Mini Cooper S to an Audi A5? I'll take the Audi all day.

    Owned my 14' Abarth since July of last year.
    Had a Faulty Vac pump and upper jounce bumpers out of the gate- but 16K miles later no issues.
    Installed 500 Madness ECU tuner with 3K on the clock- woke it up and would eat a Cooper like this (200Whp), 10K in, replace stock 16" AS tires with sticky 17" summer tires and replace rear torsion bar- made it handle MUCH better without hurting ride quality.
    Recently did the track experience- and let me tell you- reviewers are too harsh on the way the car handles, it handles amazingly when pushed, you FEEL LIKE the car is losing traction and tipping over and they assume the car is, but in reality, its planted and far more capable than you think.
    The car will push (all FWD cars will and do), but you can get it to turn more by using your brakes and steering much more aggressively (causes the rear to step out momentarily), and with a simple $130 torsion bar you unlock a lot more steering.
    I have driven 200 miles in one go, and stepped out of the car with no aches and pains, and I'm 6'2, its very comfortable but still has a stiff suspension and chassis to let you know its a sports (or sporty) car.
    The Cooper is a good mini-car, but its a phony- its a BMW pretending to be a Mini, the Fiat is designed by Fiat in Italy with a few tweaks from SRT, it has quirks and character and a evil sounding engine that separates it from the rest of the heard.
    I would choose my Abarth over a "Cooper" any day, for $500 bucks it will out run it, for $150 it will out handle it and the tone of the exhaust is intoxicating, it is out of the box-more fun.
    I was in the market for a BRZ, Cooper, Fiesta ST, Genesis coupe and Sonic RS, and I am 100% sure I made the right choice, and would choose it again if given the chance.

    • @wyvern4588
      @wyvern4588 8 лет назад

      Doubt it costs the same, I got my car for 21K with a sunroof, seat warmers and other stuff, sticker was like 27K
      I hardly even had to haggle.
      Fiat is really good with dropping the prices on these as they are a niche car, it's not unheard of to get one well under 20K with no options.
      Peak HP isn't the whole story though, the output a low RPM is awesome because of the multi-air design, you can punch it on the highway in 5th and take off like it's in passing gear.
      Plus, I really hate the look of the brand new mini- they ruined it.

    • @wyvern4588
      @wyvern4588 8 лет назад +1

      I'll agree the fiat has a odd look, you either love it or hate it. Looks like a demented smiling frog or a fisher price paddle car on steroids, nothing else looks like it, and the sound that comes from it makes it a real head turner.
      I bought the car with a lifetime warranty and I bought it to drive it till the wheels fall off.
      Where are you from? because over here in Illinois, I have only seen 2 abarths, I see more standard 500's and L/X's but they are still rare.Even during the Track experience only 17 showed, and 80% where from Michigan /Iowa.

    The copper S I found to be number one everywhere, I mean everywhere almost as common as seeing a Mustang on the road; I wanted something new. Don't get me wrong great car, great looking etc; I didn't like the price, and the reliability record, so I looked at the Abarth. In Europe the Fiat has a stellar record and it was cheap and when I test drove the Abarth, it felt quicker..Did I say Quicker yep but its not.. the Abarth has many issues, sloppy gear shift, rear end bounce, an ECU that pushes an engine way under specs, but IN MY OPINION it has great looks. So Ive owned one NOW for over a year what do I think???, I love it I drive mine 100 miles to and from work everyday is a blast! Ive put about $4500 in upgrades in mine and it will SPAnk a copper S GP, this car is so easy to upgrade the after market for these things is so large. Also did I say the engine ECU didn't push it the way it should, these engines can be safely pushed to well over 230HP in Europe they have a production model that runs at 200HP no reliability issues. I have no regrets, and I love to see the face of more expensive "faster cars" get eaten alive by me on a twisty stretch of road. I must say the Copper GP is sexy but the reliability and the plastic feel of the interior were real killers for me and the price but when your shopping for a car sometimes you can for get that the competition cost $18000.00 more

    Everything is subjective but they said the Mini had a kidney jarring ride and the seats where not comfortable for anything but short drives. Where as the Abarth had a comfortable ride, seats that where great for both short trips and long distance and it had better rear seat room. They gave the average of there MPG for the test week on the Mini but not the Fiat. Then at the end they say they like the Mini better because it was more comfortable and had better gas mileage. The review seemed pretty biased sounding to me. The 500 is cheaper more roomy and more comfortable to drive seems like a no brainer. I do agree it would be nice to get a six speed if they could make it fit.

    I just bought a low-mileage 2013 Abarth cabrio and I was kind of somewhat expecting a Mini Cooper S-type handling experience. It's not that. I had bought a new '03 Mini Cooper S and owned it for 4 years and it was so fun to drive. Definitely "Go-Cart" like. Then, in 2007 I test-drove the 2nd gen MINI and was pretty disappointed. It felt softer, less responsive, a bit bigger etc. The salesman showed me the "sport" button so that I could have more "fun". Since then MINI, (in my mind), completely sold out to consumers wanting more space, softer ride, less responsive steering etc. Not to mention enlarging the car to ugly, gargantuan proportions, (IMO). They lost me when MINI stopped being mini and became maxi! Enter the FIAT 500. What a great re-creation of the original! And it hasn't grown bigger over the years. I appreciate that. Alot. It's been a long time since I've driven a MINI but it seems like the Abarth doesn't really ride as if it was "on rails" like my MINI did. But it's just as fun and grin-inducing for other reasons. I realize that I'm comparing a 2003 MINI to a 2013 Abarth so take it with a grain of salt.

    Some other things I forgot to mention when I was comparing the two cars back to back is that the five-speed in the Fiat is perfectly geared you don't miss having a six-speed one bit. The car is actually surprisingly amazing on the highway and driving at high speeds on the highway is very confident inspiring and the car is super quick and willing to down shift into 4 a pretty high speeds. Also very surprising is the compliance soft handling of the Fiat suspension even though it is a very simple suspension setup is very cushy but at the same time very firm and handles incredibly well stock . Some owners at office for rear sway bar to upgrade the Fiat its very inexpensive and very easy to install and really improve the handle and to the point where the car is almost perfect and in no way too harsh for normal street driving

    As a recent first-timer owner of a Fiat 500 Sport, I must say it is easily one the most fun cars I have ever owned. Rip thru the gears in sport mode and I dare you not to grin ear to ear. I've never driven a Mini Cooper, but, truth be told, it sure is handsome. Of the 2 I'd have to say the Cooper is the more aesthetically pleasing, but one of the things that sold me on the 500 is how even though it's technically small, when you're inside, especially behind the wheel, it feels very roomy (you sit up nice and tall) and all of the controls are easy to reach and it's just fun, fun, fun. This is truly a driving enthusiast's car.

    Some Abarth owners are touchy and get their feelings hurt easily it seems.
    Hey... I'd buy an Abarth over the Cooper S myself.... but come on people, they don't kill the Abarth here. They have some nitpicky critiques of both cars. Not the end of the world. Just drive both and get what you want. Then don't worry what other people think.

      funny because your JCW would be eating my exhaust gases :-p Mine currently hits 0-60 in 6.2 seconds and 0-100 in 15.7 seconds, which is 1 second faster than a mk6 Golf GTi and Astra VXR, or the same as a Clio 200 Cup.
      It is soon to have over 220 bhp & 250 lb/ft...all for a lot less than a Mini JCW or Copper S, and it looks so much better too imo. Hoping for and easy sub 6 second 0-60 after these mods.
      I really wish that the people reviewing cars would consider the price much more. For example £16,000 compared with £24,000 isn't exactly comparing eggs with eggs. I will have spent around £17,000 in total to have a +220bhp Abarth; that's value for money in my eyes.
      Also is certainly a big hit with the ladies...
      I love everyone's passion for their cars but I have driven most Hot Hatches and wouldn't change my Abarth for anything below £30k, Just sayin' ;-]
      Hence my next car: A45 AMG in yellow

    this review is contradictory and full of lame cliches. first they say the fiat is "dull". lol! i dont see how anyone can say that about an abarth with top down, then they say it has a rebellious spirit. secondly, they go on to say that the ride on the mini is kidney jerker, but then go on to say it has the better ride of the two. i really don't put any credibility into what these jokers are saying. you can't see out the rear view mirror on a countach but that doesn't make it a bad car, it makes it Italian with its quirks. the mini, well it even british anymore.

    Why didn't you compare the hardtop to the hardtop? You picked the cabrio which added weight and cost. The Abarth hardtop, even with the optional sunroof, is over $3k less than the Mini, a huge consideration for people that want a soulful car with most of the features the BMW/Mini has. The Mini is a hard car to beat and your lining them up like this essentially kneecaps the Abarth.

      Late in the day I know this thread is old but I have both the cooper s as my company car and my main is a 2017 370z nismo. The cooper s is quite decent I also love fiat for the sound and also the fact it looks very close to the original both I would say are good. The cooper for the slightly better feel in terms of larger car feel and turns are sharp. The fiat for the more interesting look sound and being more perhaps driver focused.
      Then again the nismo for destruction cool factor and rare Ness in the UK.

    How is a Mini better fuel eco if it has a combined city/hwy of 28mpg while the Abarth is 31mpg? You also said that the Mini has a smaller/tighter rear passenger space than the Abarth, plus the Abarth sounds better than the Mini according to you. Too much bias towards the Mini. BTW, I don't have a preference towards any of them since I don't own one or the other.

    the abarth is slow, but it makes you feel like you're flying and about to die and that is what this is about. I hate "sensible" or "smart" hot hatches, you can't help but feel ripped off

    • @mikecustoms
      @mikecustoms 8 лет назад

      I own one (160hp) and it does pack a punch. When you are in it, you feel like you're the fastest man alive, almost feels scary fast, it is that much fun, however. My other car, a 207 GT (150hp) pulls harder but it feels slow, that's because the power delivery is very linear and there's almost no turbo lag. Now the 207 GT isn't exactly a "fast car", it does 0-60 in 8 seconds, that was respectable for 150 hp 8 years ago, now, it is pretty average. While the Abarth does have a quicker 0-60 time, in the real world they're pretty even, that's why I think the Abarth is slow and it is for a modern hot hatch but I love it.

    There are a lot of mistakes that these testers are saying in this video about the 2 cars, here are a few: - you don't like the Mini's 6 speed manual ? OK. Everybody who drove it liked it...Maybe you should drive the Kenworth's one.
    - 5 speed on the Fiat? So what !? Does it work? Is it split correctly, without killing the engine? Yes.
    - the Fiat is loud? It's a small sporty car, it supposed to be loud...
    From a car fanatic's point of view this test is worse than Tope Gear's one. At least they know something about cars...

    I own both of these cars, a 2012 MCS and a 2015 Abarth. I enjoy both cars for different reasons, but if I had to only choose one I would lean more towards the Mini Cooper S. The Abarth eats gas like you wouldn't believe, the MPG ratings are completely off especially if you drive it in sport mode in city driving, I'm getting around 16-17 MPG tops, the only upside to the Abarth is that the tank is so small it only take $20 to fill up. Both of my cars have piggyback tunes and the Mini pulls stronger and handles much better. The Fiat has Eibach Sportlines with Koni Yellows, and the Mini has H&R sport springs on stock shocks.

    • @oldkid6
      @oldkid6 7 лет назад

      Checked the MPG today using calculator after fill up and got 20 MPG with about 25 miles of highway miles, and the rest all city driving. The cars computer said I was getting 21.7 MPG. On average, a full tank of gas will get me about 145155 miles before the gas warning light comes on.

    I was driving the Abarth for neraly five years. I loved it, but the overall quality was so bad. Too many parts did failure too soon. It begun after two months when it was brand new. Fiat itself may know about the missing quality: They offer a two years warranty only which means they do not trust in their own product much. Even a Suzuki Alto for half that price offers a longer warranty by far less problems...

      +Shane Eyanson Yeah, I have a Mini I bot used, but still under warranty. Took it to the dealier several times to fix the windshield wipers, the last time after it had fallen out of warranty but the dealer said they would still fix it. They fixed the wipers (OOW) and told me I had a leaking head gasket. I hadn't even driven it 100 miles since the previous In-Warranty visit. At 100k, it is literally falling apart. I had 200k on a VW, 150K on a BMW. Mini-never again. Oh yeah...they are expensive to fix

    I test drove both cars back to back and I have to say the mini seems like a more solid build, and better and more sophisticated in every way but at the end of the day I purchased the Fiat because the driving experience with far more visceral the interior cloth seating way more comfortable and the joy of driving just so much more enthusiastic. The exhaust sound is intoxicating and then 1.4 liter turbocharged engine is fantastic and snappy at all levels of the powerband over 3000 rpm. Driving around town in 3rd gear is simply addictive with the cars instantaneous throttle response pumping and gurgling and neck snapping

      I've driven an Abarth and it was fun, but I like the R53 Cooper S better, that roots supercharger gives it instant power and tons of low end torque. A friend of mine has one, a few mods and it's quick. I don't like the boost lag from turbos, the power isn't as linear. I wish Mini still used the supercharger, I can live with lower mileage.
