Those who criticize an Abarth on the price or its size probably have never test driven one to begin with. So the Cooper S has more car to it or technology-SO WHAT?? That's not what the Abarth is about. Abarth is about going fast and having fun while doing it. Basically it's about doing more with less, which can't be said for a lot of cars nowadays given the emissions and crash safety regulations here in the U.S.
I saw both "car guys" shift to 3rd to get to 60MPH. I know for a fact my Abarth with meet 65MPH in 2nd gear before the fuel cutout. Who taught these guys to drive?
The mini can hit 60 before going into third as well. They can use a torque app and an obd2 bluetooth port to get accurate 0 to 60 times just using their phones.
@Ftbllguy195 That's for the kind words and thanks for subscribing. This week we'll be drag racing a Volt vs a Leaf...plus reviewing the Infiniti FX50 at the top of the world as well as much more. Please stay tuned.
You guys rock love the reviews from you guys. Would buy the Mini in a heartbeat. Drove a Fiat from UK back to Germany years ago had to hold the fabric roof closed over 50mph.
@brihamlin1 We were about a half a second slower to published times but were also at about 2030 ft (620 m) above sea level. Plus with only 20 minutes may have sucked at the launch of both cars.
Yeah I knew about the hot and cold air thing haha. But I really loved the video and was just wondering, I didn't pay attention when you guys said you were at high altitude:-D. But looking forward to more videos from you guys, keep up the work!
my 2012 mini Cooper s supercharged does a 6.2 roughly ...their combined weight is a lot and its a turbo version so I'm not sure when the turbo spools but I'm sure it's a small turbo ..
I bought my 2012 Rosso Abarth for $23K and some change. No buyer's remorse here, almost 2 years and 36K miles later. I've seen quite a few Mini Cooper S drivers actually buy one when they realize the cost of maintenance and repairs skyrocket on their Mini Coopers after the warranty expires(they do use BMW parts, after all-not cheap). Dealers are discounting on them,so strike while the iron is hot!.
@Boondocksaint1PSN Great Question! Nathan likes the MINI Cooper S more because it's bigger and more useful in everyday life. I like the Fiat Abarth because it sounds and handles like a baby race car with a ride that won't beat you up on the highway.
And to be honest in the real world you'd never have to big guys in a car. Instead you'd have a 120 pound guy with a half a gallon of gas doing the 0-60 MPH test on a cold night on a drag strip. Thanks for being so smart and pointing out that we are not only fat, but also wrong. You certainly put us in our place with your wise words.
I drove both two days ago, both with manual (of course), and this was also my first time driving manual. The Mini Cooper s definitely drives better all around, but for less money, you get a HELL of a lot more fun out of the fiat. My vote goes to the fiat any day of the week.
Definitely considering the price difference, I'm going for the Abarth because it has a better looking interior. Albeit it being of lesser quality, I am going to take the Italian style any day.
I love the Fiat's Exhaust note. Once you guys get a chance, maybe you can get a group of european small cars. Mini Cooper S, VW Golf GTI, and the Fiat 500 Abarth! That'd be awesome.
As we mentioned in the video: we were at fairly high altitude (over 3,000 feet elevation), which will diminish some of the horsepower - even in a turbo. Two big bodies in a car that small make a difference too. Thanks for watching. BTW - turbos tend to like cold, condensed air over hot... just an FYI.
Any chance we'll get a full comparison in the future? Everyone else (I'm looking at you C&D) seems to want to compare the Abarth to the Mini JCW instead of the S. Throwing the Veloster in there too might be interesting.
I have a fiat 500 turbo, and I can get to 60-65 in second gear, not sure how they have to shift to 3rd. Even with 25 hp less than the Abarth I get a 0-60 equal to the one in this video.
Giuseppe Cracolici The Fiat 500 Abarth has 195/45R16 tires. The Abarth also has a 2nd gear ratio of 2.238 with a final drive of 3.353. What this means is, if you take it to its' redline of 6,500 RPM you will be going 59mph in 2nd gear. 3rd gear will take you to 87mph. To maximize 0-60 in the Abarth, since you must shift to 3rd gear anyways, you normally make this gear change early since you want to keep the car in its' sweet spot of 4,000-5,500 RPMs where it makes the most power.
My cheeks would ache from smiling so much if I were to drive either one. It's great seeing cars in this class with some very real performance and sporting character. It's a great time to be a car buff no matter what your preferences are!
Great vids Guys!! I appreciate the info. I got a 2011 JCW - Love it! Love it! Love it! JCW has a cool burble from the exhaust and more balls than the S. I like the tone of the exhaust on the Abarth, too!!. Have not driven one yet, but I will very soon! I keep at least one 'pocket rocket' in the garage. Remember that phrase? Rabbit GTI was my first in '84. JCW has the space to get two guitars and a decent size amp+girlfriend loaded up for gigs - but the Abarth has the Italian models! YAY!
I recently purchased a 2014 Abarth, after having a 2013 Abarth for two years. My first Abarth in Sport Mode with traction control off would run low 6 seconds all day. So where did 7.8s come from? Oh that's right they are "shooting from the hip" (improper use of that idiom anyways) I'm a huge mini fan but an even more intensive fiat fan having owned 2 abarths in less than 3 years and neither of those tests did those cars any justice. More importantly neither of these cars are bought for their record setting 0-60 times (sarcasm), so that was probably the worst particular road test you could have selected for this pair of cars...
Damn, sorry to hear that. Hope everything works out for the best. The Stang V6 and Gen Coupe 2.0T are 2 great choices though! I have driven the older Gen 2.0T and the new Stang GT 5.0 and I was impressed with both cars! Havent driven the new updated Genesis coupe or the V6 Stang, but I hear they are awesome.
I love my 2013 Abarth. For less than 23K, it is an absolute steal! My friend has a new Mini Cooper S, and there is more room in the Abarth. More headroom, also. Not sure what those guys below are talking about. Even ALL the reviews talk about the better room in the Abarth. But, I bought it for fun...and it delivers in spades! Maybe a teeny bit slower than the Mini S, but it sounds like a Beast, and the Mini sounds like...well....not a beast for sure. Not only that, but for $700, I can get the Fiat owned Magneti Marelli ECU that plugs into the OEM connection and gives me 25 more horses. Then it will easily dust the Mini S and still be a lot cheaper than a stock Mini. Love the Abarth!!
Anybody can get their cars computer modified to increase their performance and if your main concern when picking a car was head room you should have been looking at a sedan or SUV.
Precisely cause they were that good. Anyways the Neon SRT-4 engine is still in production. Caliber SRT and Dart SRT use the same engine. BTW I have an Abarth and just learned that the reason why the US spec is faster than the european version is because SRT team tweaks it when it comes over seas. So they market it as "160hp" based on the Italian version, but it actually has more as owners has averaged between 155-175hp to the wheel on dynos STOCK.
@UrFavDudeOnUtube Wish we could. The opportunity never presented itself - BUT, we did take the Abarth around a racetrack, all-out, for many laps. The video will be posted soon. Thanks for watching.
I just don't get how you guys got 7.7 seconds on the 2012 MINI Cooper S? My 2011 does 0-60 in 6.5 seconds and I might get better on hot days then normally cold here in Michigan.
Had an Abarth Punto Evo for just over a year and it is the best and most fun car i have ever driven, and i have owned a BMW 5 series and Lotus Elise For a 1.4litre engine it is an incredible driving experience not to mention looks fantastic as well
Cool video...are your 0-60 times pretty close to the official published times? Curious how these two would compare with official times as well. Hey why not include the Smart car? Ha Ha.
I like both! I love small hatches, especially performance ones. But yeah I'd take the Fiat cause its not as common as the MINI. And its cheaper. But I also love the MINI as well.
i think the base abarth is 14.5k, with the essesse pack, which is what the one in the video appears to have its an extra £2,278 without the labour to fit it, so that takes it upto about £17,750 or so. And the 0-60 for the essesse model is about 7 secs. So i still think its fairer to compare it to the cooper s.
They are both cute little cars. The fact they can both spin there front tires reminds me of a Renault Le Car I had years ago. I got the rear bumper hung up on a farm fence, trying to back out of a driveway in the dark following a very rowdy party. I sat there for a few minutes shifting gears and not going anywhere until the host of the party knocked on the driver's window to tell me I was spinning gravel and dust everywhere... but making no forward progress.
I was very surprised when i heard about the Mini's reliability issues. The Fiat looks cool and all, but like you posted; the car is still new. I'll just have to wait for the info to come out about the Fiat's long term reliability.
I even priced a regular cooper s with only 1/2 of the options I wanted, and it came out to $38,000. The problem is that Mini nickles and dimes you for a bunch of options they dont offer as standard. Another thing is that I prefer an automatic transmission too for daily driving, and that drove the price of the mini too. with the Auto, the Veloster Turbo is still ony going to be around 26k fully loaded. Only thing it doesnt have vs the mini I priced out, is the "Mini" badge and the Xenon headlight
"Is it the Brit or the Italian." I'm sure you really meant to say the German or the Italian. Nothing connected to Britain any longer with that car. I can't wait to get myself behind the wheel of the Abarth!
I recently traded in an 03 Mach 1 for an 08 Mini Cooper S. I gave up much in the way of horsepower and torque but now I have a vehicle with a higher grade interior, sharper handling, and more passenger room/comfort. Love only filling the tank once a week with the climbing gas prices!
A rice rocket?! I personally dont like that term because I have honda civic Eg hatchback and people always say its some kind of rice rocket, although its stock. but Im more surprised at the fact that the fiat sounds that much better then a german developed mini. By the way good job guys keep up the good work =)
Did that dude say they both have an awful turning radius? The Mini has a tighter turning circle than a 911. wtf? I can easily do a complete 360 in mine even in small intersections in my hometown with streets laid down during the Civil War.
My understanding is that back pressure is bad... and reduces torque. Lack of back pressure is good... and increases torque. Back pressure = more exhaust gas remaining in the cylinder after the exhaust valve closes. Hence less room for air AKA oxygen to burn with the fuel in the combustion stroke. Less oxygen to burn = less bang = less torque. Hence straight pipes on drag cars.
Oh yeah definitely. i would take a Gen Coupe 2.0T over the Veloster for sure. I just want a car with good gas mileage though, because my Z sucks ass for MPG as a daily driver. i am also considering the Scion FR-S/Subi BRZ. Looks as good as a Gen. with less punch, but handles nice. As for the Mini, $25k is a steal for one with the options you want on it. Although we keep comparing it to Hyundai's the quality is much better on the Mini, which is why I can see it would be a lil more expensive.
You have any idea the time and money it would take to do something like that? I meant the available ones on hand couldn't fit, because they sought to tack on the 6th gear onto the 5 speed in the abarth. Jeez, I hate all of these youtube car engineers/accountants that just complain rather than understand packaging issues. There are already further limitations in the american model due to beefing up the front for safety reasons.
base price of JCW £22,455 compared to 15k base price so yea when comparing numbers of the base model... however that fiat had the suspension kit and the exhaust kit (which you need otherwise its a pointless purchase) and i think it had the titanium wheel kit (although might be wrong) which takes it to 20.5k, not really a big difference in the end
Btw i was talking about the cooper S, for everyone to know. I would instantly buy Mini if it was at least 2k cheqper for the S and some 4k cheqper for the jcw.
Well yes it is now owned by BMW, but the engine is crafted in Germany and sent to the UK to be built. MINI's exterior/interior is still built in the UK.
Those who criticize an Abarth on the price or its size probably have never test driven one to begin with. So the Cooper S has more car to it or technology-SO WHAT?? That's not what the Abarth is about. Abarth is about going fast and having fun while doing it. Ok, so these 2 guys weigh about 250+ - lbs each. Imagine what a 180 lb man alone in the cars could do!
I saw both "car guys" shift to 3rd to get to 60MPH. I know for a fact my Abarth with meet 65MPH in 2nd gear before the fuel cutout. Who taught these guys to drive?
True that my 500t is the same.
I thought they both said they'd only had the car for like 20 minutes
The mini can hit 60 before going into third as well. They can use a torque app and an obd2 bluetooth port to get accurate 0 to 60 times just using their phones.
That and their shift are slow af

Fiat sounds great over the mini
LOL FIAT
I can't even fit in the Fiat.
MINI it is.
Fiat sounds great over anything. That exhaust note is pure sex.
You guys rock love the reviews from you guys. Would buy the Mini in a heartbeat. Drove a Fiat from UK back to Germany years ago had to hold the fabric roof closed over 50mph.
Another good one guys. You guys have the coolest jobs!
They could have made it more legit by at least having the same driver do each vehicle.
@brihamlin1 We were about a half a second slower to published times but were also at about 2030 ft (620 m) above sea level. Plus with only 20 minutes may have sucked at the launch of both cars.

@TheMacFacts No, so we did the best we could in the short time we had with the two European pocket rockets.
I have wanted to see this showdown for a long time.
Both cars are great and look good but really like the cool looking Fiat.
Another great one. I love your channel. Roman and Nathan, which one of the two would you prefer and why?
I freaking love the Fiat 500 Abarth!! The Mini-Cooper is really badass too!
Nice review are you going to get these again for a longer review
@thadkirk Gosh, I think the guys building the MINI in the U.K. would really disagree, but your point is well taken.
It is pretty sweet. I think it is straight pipes coming from the motor so you get the pure engine noise.
I absolutely love how un-biased and straight forward these guys are. Tellin' ya what ya wanna know without any BS mixed in there.
@ThePsychodo 17 inch wheels on tiny cars equals a huge turning radius.

And to be honest in the real world you'd never have to big guys in a car. Instead you'd have a 120 pound guy with a half a gallon of gas doing the 0-60 MPH test on a cold night on a drag strip. do you have two big heavy men in the car?
+TheMitchOwen Incorrect. Unless you own the same car as him and are achieving a different result in 2nd gear you don't have much to stand on.

The sound of the Abarth alone is bonus points; drove both and prefer the Fiat by a wide margin.
I have a question about the MINI in this vid.
Is that kind of blue still available? What is the name of the blue??
Love the blue color!!
Fun test. Thanks.
Whats up with Nathan's shirt?

Did you get the JCW package or just the JCW factory from 09+? If I were to get the JCW package on mine it comes out to be $29K.

That engine noise from the Abarth is just belissimo!
Is this video from a mile high like some of your previous ones?
fiat 1.4 litre mini 1.6litre and the price?
Just out of curiosity, where there two big guys in your 2011 copper S? :P

It's a hell of a lot better than it used to be. It will be at least another year to wait and see if it is as reliable as some projections estimate.

I saw a guy in an abarth yesterday and be was revving the engine at the stoplight and it sounded beautiful.
Which car is more fun to drive as that is what these cars are all about??
@ThePsychodo you really don't want too much turning radius for such a small wheelbase. it would be easy for someone to flip it
@NathanDAdlen can't wait to see that

WRX would beat both. It's supposed to. It's got AWD and more power. What's your point?
base price of JCW £22,455 compared to 15k base price so yea when comparing numbers of the base model... however that fiat had the suspension kit and the exhaust kit (which you need otherwise its a pointless purchase) and i think it had the titanium wheel kit (although might be wrong) which takes it to 20.5k, not really a big difference in the end
Btw i was talking about the cooper S, for everyone to know. I would instantly buy Mini if it was at least 2k cheqper for the S and some 4k cheqper for the jcw.
the intro gave my ears a heart attack
Well yes it is now owned by BMW, but the engine is crafted in Germany and sent to the UK to be built. MINI's exterior/interior is still built in the UK.
