I had the honour of sitting with Michael Callen in Vancouver after a concert by the acapella group, The Flirtatons, a few years before he died of AIDS and chatting with him (he knew I was an RN and not a gay woman) but we talked about his singing career, his illness and how he was making his days left as meaningful as he could before he died. If it's possible to truly love someone on a short first time meeting, I did indeed love this man. I think of him still often. Sadly he lost his battle against AIDS on December 27, 1993 at age 36 and his beautiful voice was silenced except now in videos such as this.
My book about Michael Callen, "Love Don't Need a Reason: The Life and Music of Michael Callen" will be available through Punctum Books in Summer 2020. He composed this song in the mid-1980s with Marsha Malamet and Peter Allen. It became the anthem of AIDSWalk and AIDS activism in the decade, and it has been recorded by dozens of other artists. He was a hero, a trailblazer, and an outstanding musician!
I knew of Michael Callen since the early 90's but was not aware he was a musician! I knew of his activism and my roommate read his book, Surviving AIDS. He died two years after Michael did. After reading and enjoying Martin Duberman's Hold Tight Gently, I wanted to learn more about Callen's music and came across your book which I'm reading now along with listening to his music. The book is wonderful! After I return it to the library, I plan to add it to my permanent collection. Thank you for your valuable insight into Michael's life and music.
Michael’s performance is from the 1993 or 94 broadcast of “In a New Light “ an annual AIDS education and entertainment special I produced for ABC from 1992 to 1996.
I first heard this song on the album Love Lives On recorded by the New York City Gay Men;s Chorus released in 1991. Now, I know one of the co writers of this beautiful song.
@@kalakaminsky5010 the proof is in the pudding! Michael Callan bragged about having 4000 sex partners and a myriad of STDs. I don't understand why he is put on a pedestal
