I think a lot of folk here aren't getting the idea of 2weeks2 make it. It's a competition to make a music video in 2 weeks on no budget. So just ripping off someone else's copyrighted work probably wouldn't go down too well ;-)
I love the John Tamms version so came here expecting to hate this...I didn't. It is fantastic and absolutely no need to compare the two versions. both are amazing.
The tune is a children's lullaby, that later became a recruiter's ditty. The two men fighting are mercenary officers. The fellow with the fancy hilt is an Italian officer who insulted the fellow with the plain hilt, a Spaniard, calling him a coward under a fire. They met to settle the matter. Both were in the Netherlands, so one was from over the Pyrenees, the other from over Alps....That's my story and I'm sticking with it. :)
When you think about it, it's unfathomable in today's world to think that from 1750-1815 Britain was in a constant state of international war against France and her allies. When the seven years war ended, they had 12 years of peace and then thanks to us yanks they fought us for 8 years which then brought their old enemy France into the war and Spain and the Dutch. They ended on a truce and then 6 years later they were fighting in the French revolutionary war and the napoleonic wars for the next 20 years.
War, despite what Ron Perlman keeps saying, always changes. Nukes kinda make war between major powers omnicide. Until the day MAD breaks down, and people can attack without the fear of ending everyone in atomic hellfire. Then, on that day, war has finally changed yet again.
I am an American of Scots-Irish descent trying to learn about the Napoleanic wars and how my ancestors were involved. I just discovered this song. Wonderful. Maybe my ancestors sang it.
This was inspiring; I have an RP group where I had a nation I'd inadvertently made evil to the point of being almost comical. Then I found this and suddenly, said evil nation could be made human, even sympathetic.
Wow, this was unexpected - and wonderful! The fencing, combined with the music, is amazing. Treebeard, bravo! I'm just sorry I only discovered this now ... please make more lovely music like this!
Easily the best version I have ever heard of Over The Hills. Well done. I would drop the sword fight and simply have a boy in a ripped red jacket trailing a drum through the hills. Sometimes "simples" works.
Whimsical and delightful.....a wonderful version of this iconic tune...right at home with all that came before. Thanks for adding your great interpretation to the cannon!
that is so damn close to reality bro. Regulars we be. Not foes, but chessmen on the field for those, who wants us to be foes. I have NOTHING against people of foreign europe lands.
Very nicely done, beautifully rendered, great execution; I might have done it without the safety tips, but that's just me. Small detail. Still, amazing work!
Ignore the numpties mate, personally I think it's great. Especially given it took only 2 weeks to produce. A good version of the song and a powerful, evocative video to go with it. So what if there's some anachronistic elements to it, it's a piece of art, not a history lesson.
This is a cover version OF a cover, remember. The video is excellent. I couldn't help but smile at one musician who had a zip up jacket on standing against the rest, some of whom looked as if they'd come home from a medieval re-enactment outing (bonus points to them too, especially the corset wearer...scorch).
I’m still trying to find a version with the original “Queen Anne Commands” instead of the (brilliant) version arranged for the Sharpe series “ King George commands”.
...notice I wrote "mercenary officers" serving in Flanders/Netherlands/Lowlands. The lyrics for the military version date to about 1710-ish BTW Thank you for your service. (I'm a former Marine myself and am also very familiar with the tune.) Considering they had one day and no budget, the video is pretty darn good, all things considered. Thanks and Cheers!
This, along with the full fife and drum version of British Grenadiers, is the best, most stirring "marching" music I can possibly think of and I'm a bleedin' Yank!
Sorry your last comment did not make much sense to me, could you please elaborate? Are you saying that Canada being like USA is a victory for Canadian culture and that only those who approve of imperialism would see is it as defeat. This seems oddly contradictory given the USA's use of imperialism (e.g military conquest) in the past?
Abc Bcde Saying the US was "imperialist" is abusing language to score points for a political agenda. I know, I've done it myself. But that has no place in a serious historical discussion. When people talk about US "imperialism", they're talking about things like the Monroe doctrine, the Marshall plan, and our general adventurism overseas. Those policies are much to be criticized, but they are not strictly "imperialist". It's true there is much overlap: the desire to secure markets for exports, to establish military dominance, etc. But modern American interventionism lacks several defining characteristics of _imperialism_, such as the intention to colonize or otherwise _directly_ control the governments of "client nations". Let's be factually and semantically precise: the reason Canada is a commonwealth nation and not an American state is because _Britian_ was, strictly, imperialist, while America was not. After 1812, Britain never again regained military supremacy over the US (though it may yet for all I know), and the US continued its interventionist policies until the present day, and yet there was never another attempt to wrangle Canada from the British as true imperialist policy would demand.
I was actually thinking of US imperialism in Texas in the 1830s and in the west between about 1820 and 1890s. One must not forget the plan in the 1930s for the invasion of Canada by the US, which thankfully for all, remained on the drawing board! Around 1812 and afterwards Britain was much more interested in India - yes a totally Imperialist venture (note the capital 'I'). So must agree about the military supremacy issue, but one must speculate what would have happened if the US had invaded Canada again instead of choosing to look to the west and south for their armed expansion.
just so you all know john tams version isnt the original either the tams version was a reworking of the original 1700s version queen ann in the original being replaced by king george in tams version
It's a brilliant version of a great traditional, and I'm not even British :-p. I knew the Sharpe-version but this is even better imho. Thanks for putting this online.
Its the best video version I have seen of this very sad song. It makes me think of all the senseless suffering caused by the maniac Napoleon. However, the weapüons of that time were firearms, the fencing is from a much earlier era and duels were already illegal. If a duel was fought illegally it would be by pistol.

amazing for the ZERO budget and the time frame i mean one day... lolz and ive seen some of the comments to the spanish and really the song is significant with the spanish as they were afterall allied up with us at that time and so makes sense. If any viewers search "over the hills and far away sharpes war" you will find a amazing parade by the royal marines and a vocalist, thumbs up on this vid :D
Blackpowder weapons and battle-- two volleys and you had a ready-made smokescreen -- tactics made identifiability more important than camo. The relatively short effective range of a musket shot would also reduce camp's effectiveness. Heck, in that era taking cover by hitting the dirt was something ingenious. Also made it hard to reload a muzzle loading musket. Engaging from the prone really wants the breechloader.
It does look like one from certain angles, The blade is the same size as the spanish rapier, backswords and broadswords had wider, heavier blades. Google rapiers and broadswords on ebay and compare the hilts. You'll see the difference. Both are ornate but they are different styles. I had to watch the video closely a few times to compare.

This was good, but Tams’ tempo is a bit better.

We got the runner up prize in the 2weeks2 make it competition - a case of beer!
One of the best versions, spirited and with era -appropriate action (the fencing!).
Now all we could ask is, are the musicians entertaining the duellists or the other way round?
Best version I've heard in a long time.
Perfect song for that timepiece war series, Sharpe's Rifles.

Now that's soldiering
This song always seems to awaken a.desire to drop everything and head for the west.. wanderlust
ok so the way i see it, this is a modernized and refined version of the John Tams version, which makes it really damn good
Nail on head! :-)
This was also the theme song from Sharpe's Rifles, great series and good books..
Written yrs before that, original is Queen Ann commands and we obey
Try 200 years it was a recruiters song
Glad I discovered the show recently. Gives me a lot of courage.
Just bought the CD set of Sharpe, great
John Tam's rendition is, IMO, the definitive cover of this song.

The original on which this song is based, most certainly; but the one sung here is a cover of John Tam's - which he wrote for the Sharpe series.

This song was popular among British soldiers serving in America between 1775-1783.

Humiliated, huh? Too bad Canada is culturally more American than British today. I'll take a cultural victory over a military one any day.
