I'm lucky to have all 21 books in the Sharpe series and just reading them again after 10 years. Brings back memories of Sean Penn playing Sharpe in the excellent TV series. The British and French faced each other in battle about 70-100 metres apart. Any further and the musket balls flew anywhere. Those soldiers were brave men. The British could fire faster than the French and were aligned into lines so every soldier could shoot. The French attacked in massive columns with only a small proportion of soldiers able to shoot at the enemy.
@fabfaruk Yes I do agree but unfortunately this little song was never a song sung during the peninsular war. This is a song from a play by George Farquhar which was written during the 17th century. The song is slightly different may I add

@flamehands21 That's because Sean Bean played Richard Sharpe in this series and then went on to play Boromir in the first part of the Lord Of The Rings trilogy (The Fellowship Of The Ring). But then that said, Sean has had a rather varied career in which he's played many rough and raw fighting men on both the big and the small screens - and solely because he is so hard that he's rumoured (on 4chan) to be the bastard son of Chuck Norris and the Grim Reaper! :-E Lolz

Very good! I've been looking for these lyrics for months. Thank you. The difficulty is that Mr. Tams never sang the song in entirity in any one episode of 'Sharpe'. Added to favourites because I need a daily fix of 'Sharpe'.
Thank you so much for this...loved it!! I would love to see a compilation of all the scenes from the show where Hagman sings. He was, by far, my favourite character in the show. I wish there had been just an episode or 2 where there had been a subplot that revolved around him.
Oh, for gods sakes! Anyone watch sharpe? A soldier. Doesn't care for politics, nor would the hagmans or harpers of any army at this time. Sharpe respects the French he fought, and look at "Justice". These were the kind of working or lower class men who fought to survive, as professionals doing a job (for whatever cause)- they were not imperialists (at least not the rankers). Also, not the kind of men who would want American OR indeed british patriots and nationalists debating freedom and frankl
@lobo81865 "Over the Hills and Far Away" is an very old song, a version of it appeared in John Gays' "The Beggars Opera" (1728), it was of course adapted for the Sharpe TV series. (I've known the song in its original version since I was kid and I'm 48)
If I recall watching a program on the Sharpe series it was a tribute to the men that lost their lifes in that episode, Sharpe looks back in respect, others say he looks in the direction of Great Britain with the lyrics "King George and we obey over the hills and far away", both are nice suggestions, but I think the first one is the true one.
This was well done, i love this song, watching this series, seeing how brave those that formed lines to fire apon those that where so close, now days this does not happen, there is no longer any honor in war.
The series is a masterpiece of acting and writing. The ballad is superb although it's not the original 17th century lyrics. Yes it's a shame, we French have not the guts to say out loud that we had once a Hitler at the head of our Nation who has been responsible for the death of between 3.5 to 6.5 millions people( no one will ever know the real figure), soldiers, women, children, representing about 2.8 to 5.2% of the 152 millions inhabitants of the 5 European countries who have been invaded by this mad and criminal upstart,so called Emperor! I'm French by birth and I'm ashamed to see such a man worshipped in my country and put in the mausoleum of the Pantheon. He should have had no less treatment than the Nazis who were responsible for the Holocaust. Just imagine what would have happened if he had the weapons of the XXth century at his disposal. Some say he did good things like our Civil code , and others; yes he did them but he spent all his life not respecting those codes. No we should not be very proud......
Ants Holland It's not a question of courage; it's a question of just facing facts and also learning history. Talleyrand, Napoleon's minister, said in his memoirs with an incredible foresight, that France and Europe would one day pay the price of the Napoleonic wars and of the stupid congress of Vienna of 18th september 1814. If you cab read French (I don't think the book has been translated into English) read the excellent biography of Talleyrand by Jean Orieux; it is considered to be THE biography of this amazing and should I say versatile diplomat and minister.(we have a say in French which defines him very well " he eats from all the coconuts trees!).We've all paid the price: 1870 1914-1918 1939-1945 .
I do read french, I'll have a look at it. The again, a freedom fighter one nation is a murderer to another. Like to the Mongolian people Ghengis Khan is a hero but to the Chinese he is a butcher (which ultimately he was).
When he walked away from Spain...that was the most emotional ending for me. Sharpe had everything he never thought he could have: a family. I was a mess when he held his daughter for the last time. War wasn't the hardest thing for him to do. Giving up his family was 😢.

The French attacked in massive columns with only a small proportion of soldiers able to shoot at the enemy.
Sean Bean :D
Much of Sharpe was filmed in Ukraine. It's weird to think that maybe some of the filming locations are battlefields now.
Met Harris this weekend. Bloody nice guy and always at odessey show in the UK every August. Highly recommend going n seeing him if your a fan
brilliant series every single one of them
@fabfaruk Yes I do agree but unfortunately this little song was never a song sung during the peninsular war. This is a song from a play by George Farquhar which was written during the 17th century. The song is slightly different may I add
It's also mentioned he goes to London briefly before the events of Company. Just thought I'd nerdily point that out.
takes me back and means so much xxx love you Sharpe - the other love of my life!
How could anyone "thumb down" a quote from the episode? Whoever did it isn't a fan of Sharpe!
Right bastards they are.
Sharpe is one of my favorite.
@Badboyalexx If you are putting your life on the line for this country you are already a true hero, Badboy. My children and grandchildren will sleep safe tonight because of you and your brothers and sisters in arms. You have my deepest respect.

Fantastic series
If I remember correctly His mother died when he was still a pretty small child. Also you get the impression in the books he just doesn't care about who his parents were, he's got all the answers he'll ever need on the subject.
Back in 2003 as we marched I sang "....Tony Blair Commands and we obey...over the hills>..." and at that point the Staff Sgt told me to shut up and stop acting like a Yank.
blair's a wanker
He sang it today in Holmfirth - not many dry eyes (at least in my head.)
how i love sharpe,,, i would follow him over the hills and fart away
+Meg Moses LOL
well i do not think i said this,, but if i did, a mistake,, a lady never farts, just goes around with some
Follow him and Sergeant Major Patrick Harper!
Meg Moses
A true lady denies a bottom burp.
🇬🇧👍🏼❤️⚒
Meg Moses I just read your post and the tears are running down my face, reminds me of the time I sent a letter saying “the Manager has pissed on the matter” and ended it with “kind retards” 😂😂😂
Is that Bean himself reciting the chorus at the end?
Indeed.
@kiely456 lol, true.. Maybe it's part of a deeper meaning. He looks back and that symbolises him leaving the past behind and moving forward? I don't know, haven't seen these episodes before :) I like the song!
Sharp made me join the army
When I was in the 2nd rifels my platoon had me sing that it brings back memories
:-E Lolz
Who's the king now Roberts dead
Who's gonna rule the lands instead
I'm with the Dragons and i'll stay
Over the hills and far away
O'er the mains and o'er the hills
Through Dorne, the Stormlands and the Rills
Khalessi commands and i obey
Over the hills and far away
...Followed, closely, by 'Filth'!
Since downloading his album version friday night, I can't stop palying 'O'er The Hills & far Away'. Even started downloading the rest of John's work... He's got such a unique voice. I can listen to him forever, despite being a Brit... LOL ;-)
Slán,

Who else wishes they had made Hornblower - Sharpe crossover epsiode?
YES!
Lol
Very good! I've been looking for these lyrics for months. Thank you.
The difficulty is that Mr. Tams never sang the song in entirity in any one episode of 'Sharpe'.
Added to favourites because I need a daily fix of 'Sharpe'.
Its Tams all the way. Love him.
1:12 for those wanting Mr Tam.
Well done, nice to see the tradition carried on, good luck to you and all your comrades over whatever hills and no matter how far away.
Cymru am Byth
Thank you so much for this...loved it!!
I would love to see a compilation of all the scenes from the show where Hagman sings. He was, by far, my favourite character in the show. I wish there had been just an episode or 2 where there had been a subplot that revolved around him.
Brilliant series. Totaly hooked.
Remember when TV was good?
I hope fifes and drums played for Hagman and Harris after Waterloo.
Good thing AC3 takes place at least 40 years BEFORE the Sharpe stories take place.
@lobo81865 "Over the Hills and Far Away" is an very old song, a version of it appeared in John Gays' "The Beggars Opera" (1728), it was of course adapted for the Sharpe TV series. (I've known the song in its original version since I was kid and I'm 48)
that is quite the best post of sharpe´s theme ever, especially regarding the various lines of the song most people did not know
so beauiful.. all men of arms.. of all nations must pay tribute.. ah USMC does so now.. i love it.. thank ye
Agreed and well done for saying this friend it takes a lot of courage to denounce a hero of your nation as a killer :). Respect.
Ants Holland name a conqueror who is not considered a "butcher" by the vanquished.???
William the conqueror, Che Guevara?
Woohoo I met Harris today!!!! Good fella signed picture and everything
Sean Bean: A man's got no right to be that handsome.
Sharpe: every woman wants him, every man wants to be him.
I love to live in those days
Same mate....same...
When literally men were men
I am no fan of songs praising idiot monarchies.....but this song is amazing....folk music at its finest....created by suffering
God bless all the Celts
