This US/UK bickering pains me when all I've come here for is to enjoy the song. I'm an American serviceman but I simply love the sense of quiet pride and brotherhood in this piece. Love to my British cousins and brothers in arms, from an American who hasn't forgotten his history.

Won the respect of his chosen men by fighting next to them and not abandoning them. And always listened to them, when they had ideas or issues. Richard Sharpe, rose from ranks to be one of their best officers and never asked his men to do something that he wasnt willing to do himself.

I lost my father to pancreatic cancer in 2012, I was 17. We shared a love of the Sharpe books and even more so the series with Sean Bean. When I miss him I still come back to listen to this when I'm struggling. Keep on soldiering through the shit that life throws at you and remember to call out a bastard when you find one!

I love your approach. I share the feeling of huge loss and I had my dad until I was in my thirties. I love certain stories, movies and tv shows for the same reason that you mention. My dad was a medic in Vietnam and was a total cynic about war, just like Sharpe.
Take good care of yourself man. Your own kids will know their grandfather through you and he sounds like a man worth knowing.

Everyone in the UK probably has an ancestor who went off to fight in the Napoleonic Wars (or War of the Austrian Succession, which is what the original of this song was written about). History isn't detached from us.......all of our families took part in it.

I have been captivated by Wellington’s campaigns against Napoleons armies since I was a teenager (I’m 78 ) I first became enthralled by him when I found a book that had his letters to his bosses? back at the war office. They were wonderfully acerbic and to the point. I’m surprised that he kept his job, Try as I may, I can’t find even one ancestor who fought for British in that war. They were all already in the US and fighting against the kings forces if they fought at all.I do have one who was a Loyalist in Virginia during the Revolution.but most were fighting for the US during that time.

There are some actors who are so convincing in a part that they make the character their own and anyone else coming along will have a heck of a lot to live up to . Such is Sean Beans portrayal of Sharpe , hes perfect .

The casting on “Sharpe” was perfect.
Cornwell changed the character Sharpe's hometown to match Bean's accent. An actor can't get much more of a compliment from an author than that.

I signed up to britbox just to watch again. Nostalgia. I watched this as kid in the 2000s with my dad. Something about the storyline of the ragtag bunch and the brothership they had. Rough and ready but they were all crackshots. It will never get old.

I used to watch Sharpe with my Gran, I have fond memories of sitting on the rug in front of the fire watching Sean Bean kill the French.
Love the song, brings back some lovely memories of my childhood.

As a Dane I'll say this. The Helmand province under French command was swimming in bribes. When UK moved in and we subsequently came under British Task Force Helmand all hell broke lose. Why? Because unlike the frogs, Britain had no intention of giving money away to the enemy. They're some of the most professional soldiers I've ever served alongside with.

I am of part Swedish and part Tunisian ancestry, so yeah, nothing British about me at all. But I started watching this series, Master and Commander and Hornblower many years ago when I was little, and I love it so much. Of all history, the British/English history is the most interesting, its number one for me. I really love the British/English history especially during the Napoleonic times, but also during the Renaissance and the 17th and 18th century. The Red Coats, the gentlemen officers, the nobles, the British Royal Navy, everything about it is so damn cool, I love it, and I love history. I would love to visit London in the future. Thank you for this wonderful series!

what sharpe represented for me was some of the positive aspects of the warrior archetype which we all have. He served the king with great honor, fierce determination in the face of death. He also showed immense compassion at times and wasn't a warmonger or imperialist.

The Master and Commander film, while excellent, is just a snapshot of the story. Heck, a similar effort for Cornwell's "Saxon" series might play well with the interest in historical fiction as witnessed in the success of Outlander.

I was in 2rgj in belfast palace barracks in 1995. We had just arrived, r coy and the camp was top heavy with 2 para. I remember walking into the naafi with Sharpe playing on tv. Some paras started getting mouthy about our regiment and Sharpe. Whst followed was a 300 + squaddie brawl which ended with some poor para loosing his spleen. Needless to say the paras didnt get mouthy again. Great days, tough men and great regiment. Swift and bold
2 RGJ, previously 3 RGJ, previously The Rifle Brigade, previously the 95th Rifles are the direct descendants of Sharpes famous regiment. (Even though Sharpe was a fictional character ) the way that the 95th performed in the Peninsula War, and later at Waterloo will long remain a source of immense pride to green jackets who followed. Black and green the finest colours ever seen!

Having lived in Belfast all of my 68 years I can truthfully say that the paras were the scum of the earth. Their actions in Ballymurphy and Derry led to PIRA getting lots more recruits, which, in turn, led to the deaths of many British soldiers. Look up what they did to Majella O'Hare, a 12 year-old girl murdered on her way to church.

Watched Sharpe when I was 16, pretty important period of my life as it is for most people. Absolutely loved it, the song takes me right back to that time.
I loved watching Sean Bean in Sharpe as he worked his way up through the ranks to make it to Major,he put the other officers in their place who bought their way into the army,a true soldier.Loved this programme and this theme tune too.
two more episodes were released in the 2010s, he ends up a Colonel!

I don't believe there could have been a better song to personify the Sharpe stories. Loved the entire series. It showed the whole process of growing up and maturing as a great soldier and a man. That goes for the entire core cast.

Hagman was my favourite character in the show, and I loved the scenes where he sang.

I have very fond memories of watching Sharpe with my Dad and Grandad. Sadly the latter isn't with us anymore. He left me all the novels by Cornwall and had this played at his funeral (also in the army) and come back to this video every now and then and smile thinking of him 😊

The tune is an old Scottish folk song which has had various words put to it over the years. These words were written in the 1990s by a folk musician and actor John Tams who appeared in the Sharpe TV series. I think as few military units have 'adopted it' in recent times.
It is a British military song that has been through a number of iterations. The earliest is I think from the war of the Spanish Succession where the lyrics mention the Duke of Marlborough and Queen Anne commands and we obey, rather than King George.

Long before he tried to steal a National Treasure and wrest away the ring of power from Frodo, this was my introduction to Sean Bean. I fell in love with the character of Sharpe and so did the men he lead. I hope some of you have the time to watch these episodes.
It's also the only thing Sean Bean has ever done in which he doesn't die (although I think Sharpe died in the end. I dont know, I'm only on the second book! :P)

Yes it's acting but , as a man watching it , you can but admire the bravery and courage of the men who once fought in the armies of England and France. As you watch it again, and again, you'll see the lilt of Irish humour coming through with Harper... And indeed it's most like the Irish I once knew , who sadly have passed into the next realm

They Marched on Washington DC. They were meet in the field by the American Army commanded by the US President, The British regulars swept away the American army before it in one day of Fighting, and Marched on Washington. the captured Washington DC and Sacked and Burnt the White House. They occupied Washington for 18 Months before a Peace Treaty was signed.

Population of the USA in 1812 was about 8 million. Canadian population perhaps 500k.
British forces only looked to defend Canadian soil as most of its forces were used up in attaining its primary goal - defeating Napoleonic France.
The 1812 War made Canada a nation, and bankrupted France. Two excellent outcomes.
The USA would go on to kill its own in their murderous civil war, annex the remainder of North America and become the most powerful country in world history. Great Britain would rule the globe for nearly a hundred years before declining sharply and becoming a near non entity. Shame for us Brits, but then, nothing lasts for ever.

The Americans thought it would be a walk through the forest, and the settlers would welcome them with open arms... it was a motley crew of regulars, American United Empire Loyalists, Escaped American Slaves, French, Indian, and settlers that met them... The Americans made a two pronged attack (one on what is now Kingston, and the other at Niagara on The Lake) and sadly, lost a lot of men on the march to illness... those that made it to the battles didn't have the heart they started with... The attack on Canada was a political act, not a militarily significant move... but it galvanized the people of what was then Quebec and Ontario to become more united... and coloured Canadian feelings regarding the USA for the better part of the Century and led to the 1867 act of confederation and later the trans continental railroad...
to this day, even though we are generally on good terms with our American cousins, we are leery of the American Government's intentions...

Yes, indeed. Those Americans who marched north were told that Canadians would view them as their saviours from British rule, this failed to materialise, the warm welcome and food supplies were not forthcoming. Hungry and disillusioned men do not make for a good fighting force.
I would suppose the idea was to unite the whole north American continent so that any enemy nation could only invade - at that time - by sea.
This has got to be one of the single dumbest comments I've ever had the displeasure of reading. First off, the British troops were not from the Potomac river. They were veterans from the Duke of Wellington's Peninsular army and were sent to attack settlements on the Potomac. Second, President Madison was not in command of the army at Bladensberg, Brigadier William Winder was. Third, the British didn't occupy Washington for 18 months, they were driven out after 26 hours after capturing the city, by a hurricane and went on to be defeated at the Battle of Baltimore, where the British commander, Major-General Robert Ross, would be killed and the Battle of New Orleans, where the newly promoted British commander, Major General Sir Edward Michael Pakenham, brother in law to the Duke of Wellington, would also be killed.
And then the Americans massacred the British outside New Orleans and stoped their southern advance. The war of 1812 was a draw, but it did help to unify the American people

I honestly have no idea how myself as a young black dude ended up getting invested in this series back when it dropped, I can't remember most of what I watched to this day, save for how cool Sharpe seemed, a character named "Obediah"(?) and this wonderful haunting theme song.
Obediah is Hebrew. Most names at that time were biblical.
