I bought the first 5 seasons on Prime soon as they were available. They switched to BritBox and became unavailable for purchase except by subscription. Got the DVDs of the other seasons. One of the greatest series ever made and super unappreciated.
Love to re-watch this series, and this song permeates through the entire story with John Tams voice adding to the spectacle. Struggle to watch Sharpes Waterloo, the loss of Harris and Hagman left a mark.
No war is soldering, forced to go to a country that doesn't want them, going to a country most have never heard of. Most of these was thieves, murderes, gamblers only a few where the privileged.

Misfortune for him, while being a career starter for Bean. McGann is a first-rate actor, so would have played well the character. It's impossible to determine if anyone could have played better Sharpe, because it's not been tried.

Yeah, the budget of Sharpe was less than what they spend to catering in modern day series, but the characters and storylines were gold. No need for remake and That's Soldiering.
Big budget does not equal better. For me atleast for example. My favorite Dune is the campy sci-fi miniseries. Could be nostalgia who knows but i found the low budget endearing to me and made the cast have to be that much better.
If you look at the collars on the riflemen's jackets they are red, this is part of their history, the original rifle regiment formed during the war of independence was called the Royal American Regiment. Bandsmen in the modern Rifles show their origin by the hackles in their headgear, the large hackle is in memory of the Royal Americans

I think it was great how Sgt Harper and Lt. Sharp were mortal enemies at first, but by the third episodes they had a mutual respect and understanding that Sharp was not like the socially inbred Officer's Corps . He was a true soldier since he was from the enlisted Ranks and was from a lower class than 99% of the officers.
I loved the engineering major as well. I love how wellington pretty much tells that stupid nobleman to keep his name out his damn mouth. Intresting to me that the only officers who had to earn their rank were the engineer corps.....essayons indeed

In other versions this traditional song traces back to the early 18th century and the times of queen Anne. This is a beautiful song. Sung with a certain acceptance of fate. I wish it was always listened to with this footage which shows the meaninglessness of the soldiers life. And, the stupidity of war.

Simmerson runs away as expected and Leroy holds the line, repulsing the French with Sharpe's new loading technique and the day is won. Sharpe's Light Company is detached from the South Essex not long after, so Leroy stays in the South Essex and rises to its commander. When Sharpe's company is returned to the South Essex ,, Leroy has sadly died (Sharpe's Honour)

You don't have to watch these programmes if you are looking for real blood and guts.
