"Hello darkness my old friend, I've come to talk with you again" i was clean off meth for 9 months, but decided to relapse, and was driving to the "plug's" house. I listened to this song on the way there, and somehow, those words alone made me decide to turn around and go home. Ive remained sober, going on 6 years of sobriety now.
Congratulations. Very proud of you. I have a nephew who is an addict. He was high or drunk for 10+ years, starting at 14-15 years old. He's been in a treatment program for 2 years now and is FINALLY clean and sober. He has been through hell. I'm sure you have too. Keep up the sobriety, my friend. God has big plans for you.
I'm not sure if you guys read these, but just in case, I'm 71 years old, I was about 13 or 14 when Paul Simon wrote this song and it's always been a favorite. When I heard Ya'll "Disturbed" do this cover, I actually had goose bumps from head to toe. by the time it got to the end ,I had tears in my eyes. You "Disturbed" have brought a great deal of justice to this great hit, and will carry it's legacy for many, many years. Out of the millions of views of this video, I'm sure at least 1000 are mine. The words to the song, mean as much or more now than when written, so many years ago. Even though I'm not a Metal fan, I will always cherish your version. To say this old man is obsessed with this cover, would be a gross understatement, Carry on, and God Bless ya, and THANK YOU, from a Fan, In Tennessee.
@StjDUK, it's like Paul Simon was saying "man this song was written and waiting for you to sing it. I see that this version has one-billion, (1 billion) views...WOW!!!
I constantly struggle with my mental health and this song reminds me that so many suffer in silence. Remember, you are not alone, we all walk beside you.
Hello so sad to read that , don't know you, but here.s my advice from my heart, whenever you start struggling on it, THINK STRONGLY that u don't need that f......problem, think strongly that the only cure , medicine and solution is YOU , do not use pills , use your internal and mental power, think strongly that everything is fine, WHEN I SAY STRONGLY I REALLY MEAN IT, believe me , with faith in God ( if you are a believer ) or FAITH IN YOU ! you can turn a difficult moment into a wining moment , NO MATTER WHAT OR WHERE, YOU ARE THE SOLUTION FOR YOURSELF, do something different or fun in that moment, don't let that something that does not exist , can go over you, your positive mental power is stronger than bullshit created for your weak side of brain, So if u are a winner, no more mental weakness will come . BELIEVE ME , BUT MOST IMPORTANT , BELIEVE IN YOU ! easy.... a big hug !
My 81 year old father turned me onto this song a few years ago. We are both blown away by this version and how it just makes you FEEL. I listen to it as often as I can!
74 here and I listen it often. Great version of a classic song. Love it, even though I don't listen to heavy metal. But this song and the song he sings with Ann Wilson I really like.
For my people, my city, coffins parading in army trucks ... without the greeting of their loved ones ... only tears in solitude. I love you Bergamo ... we will rise stronger than before
My brother worked in Italy, i went to pick him up in Rijeka,Croatia, when he crosssed border there. He Is well, and doing fine. Now we are quarantined, and i just wanted to listen to this song,,,
The following verse... And in the naked light, I saw Ten thousand people, maybe more People talking without speaking People hearing without listening People writing songs that voices never shared And no one dared Disturb the sound of silence The verse makes me think of today with people doing nothing but their heads down texting on their phones, "talking without speaking, hearing without listening". Then with all the violence in public places, this could be the future... "People writing songs that voices never shared, And no one dared" I have been around awhile, grew up in the 60s, and watched what has become. It is very sad. This song, to me, explains what we have become (and becoming) as a people. A great song that hits the heart. Thanks Paul and David.
The soog can also represent the build of inner fire to the injustices, the abuse, and silent struggle with a system that does not value love and compassion. No one dare break the silence less the strength, the resolve should break. There is always the darkest hour before the dawn. Makind is moving through the darkest hour as we discover the truth of corruption in all it's levels, but in doing so we are bringing it to the light and in the end we will break free to a new dawn.
That's it. It's the cold heartless and lost souls who need compassion the most desperately need. We're all bleeding red. We need to come together and unite as humans 😢😢
I lost my elderly mum just over 4 months ago. I used to play music to her regularly of which she loved this song by Disturbed. She was 92 yrs old and had vascular dementia. Makes me cry when I hear this song but I know she is around in love and spirit.
If she was 92 years old I can tell you right the fuck now, she did not like the that group of players. Simon and Garfunkel was who played this song. Not that shit crap remake of garbage
so very sorry for your loss. I lost my mum 2 years ago and it's as fresh today as it has ever been. Think of the happiness your mum felt in those moments you shared, let that joy into your heart and feel the happiness she must have experienced. You gave her that.
This song brings me back to lonely nights staring at the stars while deployed in Iraq in 04.... the sounds of gunfire and choppers overhead overlapped by the sounds of silence in my own head while watching the stars wishing for a peace I couldn't observe...... thank you for this masterpiece...
Ohl Matthew what an experience you so many soldiers all over the world had to go through. Hope and pray these effects are less than lessened over the years for you and everyone else who lived through war like my moms family moved back to Greece in twenties and stayed throughout world War II in the 40s. She went to three wars the ones the Italians. The Germans and then the Civil War made by the communist up till 1949 when they were brought back to America because they were natural born citizens by the state department.. Mon still had those nightmares up till the 60s. Now she's gone and those nightmares are gone too. And my dad was drafted when he was 35 years old and had a heart attack during the blitzgred in London that partly disabled him. I wish you more peace over the years take care brother thank you

I’ll be honest. When I first heard that Disturbed made a cover of this song, I was highly sceptical. I love Disturbed, but hearing that they were doing a song by Simon and Garfunkel left me thinking that they were going to end up butchering the original. But then I went in and listened to this song and, let me just say, I was blown away. I’ve now heard this song more times than I can count and everytime I hear it, it’s just as amazing as when I first heard it. I will always love Disturbed, regardless of what other people say.
Couldn't agree more! I usually hate covers, along with movie remakes. This is the exception! There is so much power and depth, so much more than the original. I'm old, remember the lyrics to most S&G songs lol. Hate to admit that I prefer this but I do! Listen to it 2 or 3 times daily lol. Amazing voice and the video is wonderfully dark, just perfect
We played this at my uncles funeral after he passed on Christmas Eve. He loved disturbed. I miss you Uncle Mark Edit: thank you for all the love you guys, y'all are the greatest. Edit: happy birthday uncle mark. The family got together and listened to this song. We love you.
Experienced. That is the only word to describe hearing this song. You don’t “listen” to it. You don’t dance to it. You EXPERIENCE it. S&G gave us the poetry, David Draiman gave us the warning.
I am. Happy New Year 🎊🎉 66 yrs old here and LOOOOVE this song. They have transformed this already elegantly and for the times and the artists performing it, a beautifully and elegantly done song into an absolute masterpiece of the next century.
This version of Simon and Garfunkel's song echoes the times in which we now find ourselves... Dark, disturbing and full of rage. I love David's voice, absolutely flawless.
I'll respect your privacy, Pardon me for writing in your comment am impressed by your personality. I admire your kind demeanour. I mean It's quite impressive the way you expressed yourself, and I can tell you are an easygoing person someone worth spending time with. sorry if this sounds weird, but I can tell you're a very positive person. If it's okay with you, I'd love to be friends.
If you like THIS version...go find the one from Conan O'Brian's talk show. If at all possible, play it through a really good sound system...one that'll rattle your bones a little. I simply can not get past that first lift without sobbing uncontrollably. Very few pieces of music can do that to me. I'm not going to do it tonight, because I've had a long day and, truthfully, it's a bit exhausting to listen to and watch. But, damn, when I need an emotional cleanse...David Draiman, on that night, sick as a dog with a high fever, (as the legend goes) threw a performance that belongs upon Mount Olympus...but it was given to us mere mortals!

His voice is so incredibly soft and powerful at the same time. I remember when I first heard this version on the morning radio. It was a couple of months after my father's sudden death. My dad had been a Simon and Garfunkel fan. I listened to this cover and had to pull to the side of the road as I was bawling my eyes out. It was cathartic. Thank you for helping me grieve with this song.
Sorry for your lose! Live every day like dad is behind you, and make him proud because of you. I can't even imagine to lose someone from my close family, but I am fightting with my own... because I don't have time for them and I know I will regret once.

David may never really know how beautiful and powerful his voice is. This version brought meaning to the song, I lost my sister to cancer, may God bless those who have fought, lost and won the victory of this dreaded disease.
This was my dads fav song, he loved S&G and he passed this pass January, I felt broken as I was the one who found him. Maybe two days had passed and this video showed up in my feed, God did I cry and I still get a big lump in my throat when I hear it. This is so beautifully done, I love his voice, you can just FEEL the emotion. It has forever changed the song for me but in a good way, I love this version. And I like to think my dad sent this to me to say "I'm still here, listen for me in the silence" ❤️

When I was a teenager back in the 70's I recall my dad saying that in 20 years the young people would laugh at my music just like I laughed at his. Now 50 years later I see kids listening to Led Zepplin and wearing Pink Floyd t-shirts and singing "Sound of Silence" I gotta say, Dad (RIP) you know I love you but they don't laugh at our music, they just remake it.
I haven't listened to metal much for a long time but my brother passed this along to me and it blows me away. I think I've replayed it at least a dozen times in the last two days. I always loved the original Simon & Garfunkel version and I never thought anyone could do it better, but man oh man. I get misty-eyed every time I hear it. And judging from the comments I'm not the only one. Words cannot begin to describe how awesome this rendition is, and I am now a Disturbed fan.
+Scott Bieser I love reading the responses from those who grew up with the S&G version or those who loved the original and are impressed with the cover as well. I had heard the original a few times but never really "listened" to the lyrics. This one made me listen, the vocals so powerful with the lyrics. I feel like it reinvents the song for the current time. I can imagine that's how people felt hearing the original the first time. That it fit that time. I have listened to this over and over and so many times. Gives me chills!
+Janice B I think that's a good point. This is a powerful song in any time when it's performed according to the musical tastes of the time. I still love the S&G version because that is my time, but this version is probably the best rendition of it I've ever heard and I hope it speaks to today's generations the way it did 40 years ago.
+Scott Bieser Me too just try to get tickets my god they are like metal johnny cash I'm going to have to go to canada from NY NY WHAT EVER IT TAKES I'M THERE
The first time I heard this song, was as was at 6 PM on my way to a 7 PM to 7 AM nursing shift people suffering from addiction. I was a detox RN in NJ. A couple months prior had just left my husband of 10 years after much abuse with a seven-year-old daughter staying with my mom. I I brought sour patch, kids and cupcakes to my patients suffering from alcohol and opiate abuse because they love their sweets and I want them to make them feel good and my plan in the morning was to say good morning to her and my mother and to say have a great day at school and then drive to the beach where I lived and end my life because I couldn’t take the betrayal and the pain anymore. I was going to go to the beach where I lived and end it but I listen to this song over and over on the way home from work and I realized that I couldn’t do it, his voice spoke to me on a visceral level, I realize that if I took my life, I would have betrayed my daughter. I don’t know what it was about his voice, but he saved me. I wish I knew him. I wish I could tell him that he saved me that night. I just want to tell anyone who is suffering, music touches you so deep that it changes thinking😅. I don’t know who he is to be honest with you. My ex-husband listen to him a lot. I don’t know why his song came up on my phone at night on the way to work in my car, I was ready to go. Something about his voice that night made me stop and I listen to him all night long and I realized if I did what I wanted to do, I would ruin another life... I don’t even know any of their other music just my ex listen to them a lot. I shouldn’t even be posting this, but I feel like I need to tell someone what this man’s voice did me that night. please take care of yourselves. I just want everyone to be OK and I am finally OK.

@@DevourmentDay Please let me take this opportunity to express my most humblest and sincere apologies to you. I had no idea that making a light hearted comment about 1 man's voice in 1 song would have such a profound affect on you. I am mortified that I hurt your feelings and totally disregarded your wealth of knowledge. Knowledge you so gracefully shared with all of us. We are all much better people because you were able to list your favourite singers. I hope this apoloy has improved your quality of life. fourirons213 that just proves that even these heavy metal guys that yell through 90% of their song are much more talented than the bubble gum pop crap and hip hop and r&b where 100% of their music is auto tune. This is coming from a guy who grew up listening and still listens to country.
It's fun to see how many of them can actually sing. The dude from Slipknot can sign his fucking ass off too. Check out Stone Sour.... his other band. It's sorta like this on some tracks.
Happy new year everyone 2025. For now... I am still here.... I pray I am still here in a year! Like this song says... grows in silence... but I am praying and hoping for us all to finally have a good year!
No matter how many times I hear it, I cannot get over how well done it is. His voice is perfect for it and they build it up perfectly, the crescendo is right where it is supposed to be for that grand ending. Well done, well done.
Jesus Christ is the love of your life. Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: Matthew 7:7 ✝🌅 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. John 3:11 🌅 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 ✝🌅
Oh shit...I got a whole new meaning out of this cover. His intensity and deepness brought more of a frustrated and angry feel for the state of humanity. I just love how the lyrics are so applicable decades after this song was first written - I have a feeling it will be applicable for years to come.
Liz Xu. I couldn't agree more. Paul Simon rolling into New York at the youbg age of what. 21. When he witnessed and took in, and then wrote of his experiences. Yes more anger and frustration in the state of humanity decades later, sad in itself. When I first heard of this remake I didn't think I would care for it. I was wrong and can't quite listening to it again. Perfect tribute to a genius's work of art.
There will be a time when we'll not sing any songs but still be as frustrated about the state of humanity as you were while listening to this song. That time is near. I only hope that I don't make it to that time ever.

This is probably one of the best songs they've ever done thank you Paul Simon for writing this. I listened to this song constantly when I was in the hospital fighting cancer
This song… the power in his voice, the messages he brings… it’s golden… His words are saying “don’t stay silent and cower in sadness, speak out and let everyone hear you” not to mention a sub-message when he says “hello darkness, my old friend” Him saying that is saying “don run from the darkness, confront it, fight it, stand your ground” This song will always stay in my heart for as long as it can… Thanks Disturbed
Beat my opiate fentanyl addiction. Carried this song for a long time. This one hit hard and did its job. Love and respect to all of you. Always hold on. Always.
I feel you. This to me is God himself thru Disturbed warning us. There are battles before us and there will surely be loss and pieces to be picked up. But in the end...He sends help. God has already helped you. I too need help. Thank you for sharing.
This was always one of my all time favourite songs... but this is now my no. 1! Simon & Garfunkel's wonderful mournful song combined with this guy's gritty, angry vocals and arrangement...WOW!!! Few songs stay relevant nearly 55 years on but the song is even more so in these times of bleak urban decay, social media isolation, and a world where extremes of obscene wealth and abject poverty exist side by side. If S& G's original was a sorrow song for their world, this is a scream of rage for ours!!!
Disturbed absolutely rocked this song. This song sends chills down your arms everytime and brings a tear to your face one of the most powerful songs ever made
Wish I could thank you enough for the pleasure u guys gave my husband in his last moments of life he insisted that he listened to u as he took his last breath so from the bottom of my heart thank you guys x
@@GuySmithSmoke I would end up having to stagger breathe just to keep some of his phrases going that are in the higher range while the lower notes get harder for me to fully project out especially on his lowest notes making me feel like I have to sing those notes up an octave to keep them in my comfort zone
Wow, this is astonishly powerful. I've been a hardcore Paul Simon fan my entire life and know next to nothing about Disbturbed, and this is easily the best cover I've ever heard of any of his songs. Definitely in the top five of covers, period. Like others have said, it gave me goosebumps and left me with tears in my eyes.

My parents have tried to understand but it is hard for them…the power in this song…it’s beautiful to me and whenever I listen to it, for once everything settles away and I’m just one with the music. I'm always skeptical when it comes to S&G covers. I tend to regard them as ... almost sacred, not to be messed with... but, this cover - I love it. You totally GET the song. The feeling, the emotion, the meaning, everything. This is truly a magnificent interpretation.
I couldn't disagree more, but repsect you opinion. For me, I think replacing the very REAL and subtle meditation on REAL death, wth the performative (almost pantomime) faux-edgy and faux-dark metal cosplay aesthetics, and straining to seem all doomy.... is absolutely not getting it at all. At all. It's like if Michael Bay directed a remake of 'Apocalypse Now' . I'm sure the intent is heartfelt, but it cheapens the song with overcooked gurning and melodrama.

Hello, darkness, my old friend. I've come to talk with you again Because a vision softly creeping, Left its seeds while I was sleeping. And the vision that was planted in my brain Still remains Within the sound of silence. In restless dreams I walked alone. Narrow streets of cobblestone 'Neath the halo of a street lamp. I turned my collar to the cold and damp When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light That split the night And touched the sound of silence. And in the naked light I saw Ten thousand people, maybe more. People talking without speaking. People hearing without listening. People writing songs that voices never share. And no one dare Disturb the sound of silence. "Fools," said I, "You do not know: Silence, like a cancer, grows. Hear my words that I might teach you. Take my arms that I might reach you," But my words like silent raindrops fell And echoed in the wells of silence. And the people bowed and prayed To the neon god they made. And the sign flashed out its warning In the words that it was forming. And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls And tenement halls. And whispered in the sound of silence."

Actually, coming from the "Down with the sickness" vocal, I am absolutely bowled over by this version. I never though he could SING like that. Metal is mostly screaming and distortion.
@@VauxhallViva1975 Metal are often scoffed at when it comes to vocal praise. But very often they're training leads them to develop some of the most powerful and dynamic vocal ranges in the world of singing. Especially necessary when battling the intensity of metal instrumentals. The beauty of this is that this voice is almost completely untouched by software, and it shows.
Not a huge fan of disturbed. Like a few of their songs, but most of them felt generic over the years, but holy crap this blew me away. Glad to see that he gave the song the respect it deserves, while still making it his own.

@@TontoEpstein why do think this is auto-tune garbage? I’m not going to start with a tirade of abuse before you write me off as a nob 🤣 I love original tunes and genuinely believe, as a rule, don’t copy. However, this version, performed live as well, isn’t auto-tune at all. Played live it’s even more moving, he puts his soul into it and the symphony when played live is hardly auto-tune, it’s classical mixed with hard rock. How does auto-tune come into it I really can’t see where you’re coming from?

Paul Simon who wrote this song (and who wrote all the songs-lyrics and music for Simon & Garfunkel) apparently saw Disturbed performing this song on a late night show and contacted the band saying he was very impressed by their "powerful " performance of this song.
I think that most artists don't get upset, when they see another band doing one of their old songs. If anything, it should be flattering to know that your message is still relevant, even if the actual way it is sung, gets updated to a more modern beat and rhythm. In most cases, it is easily recognizable as derived from the original, with many of the basic patterns of notes and melodies being maintained, if slightly altered in tempo and range. This song is a perfect example of that and it goes to show, that another artists vision of the song, can even improve it, from the point of view of the younger generation and sometimes, even the original generation of listeners. However, there will always be those who prefer the original. I like both versions, but Disturbed's version is better, in my opinion. I think the power of the voice behind the message is what Paul recognized. The message was given strength.
Trent Reznor from NIN said the same thing to Johnny Cash about the song "Hurt." At first Reznor was a little put out because of how personal the song was to him but after he heard Cash sing it and saw his video for it he told him this is no longer my song it's yours.
Wow, I am not an emotional guy, but this song hits me differently in so many ways... I feel like i want to cry but also protect everyone around me at the same time. Then I get a joyful and sense of peace and calm. Powerful music, massive respect to the artist.

OMG.... David Draiman's voice has so many ranges and he sang this song so beautifully. Bravo. I have always been a fan, and this band continues to grow in their range. They will be around forever 🥰
His vocals are SHIT. The whole purpose of this song is the harmonies of their two voices. Listening to an industrial Goth wannabe screaching the lyrics with no harmony is a total travesty. It's almost as bad as when Cheryl Crowe covered Sweet Child o' Mine or Dolly Parton covering Stairway to Heaven. For the love of Christ! Somethings, you just don't touch.
Range, WHAT RANGE? Range means you can hit notes without going out of key or screatching, and that's what he does he screatches. I'm a sound engineer certified by the Canadian government, so please don't tell me I don't know what I am talking about. The world's standards have taken a serious nose dive.
I'm a fairly big music snob, especially when it comes to covers. Simon & Garfunkel are iconic. David Draiman gave this song absolute justice. I've always adored the original (and still do), but Draiman's version is chilling. It gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it, and that takes a real artist. Thank you for creating this amazing rendition, David. Incredibly beautiful.
+Wednesday Camille I need to listen to this and see the video every few days, since I discovered it a few months ago. You describe my own reaction quite well. Such power!
+Wednesday Camille yes I could almost "cut and paste" your post...as an old skool S'nG' fan...I feel there are certain songs, certain things in life, that you just don't fu## with...unless you do it very, very well. And yes! DISTURBED does these classic -remakes like they were meant to in some cosmic prophecy fortold. This is what they do, and they do it better than anyone...LAND OF CONFUSION was more about hard driving power, here in SOUND OF SILENCE - the errie, yet beautiful, haunting sound blended niceley with the power of the vocals/power of the words with beautiful creshendos of cybals and timpani...:)
I've always thought the original version was so perfect that I never liked any cover, even live versions didn't hit the same way, but this... holy shit. It brings all the power and sadness of the original, but then takes it home, it's as if S&G's was a pleading for people to listen to the warning, and this starts off with the sad recognition that nobody did listen and then explodes into a desperate anger that nobody ever will, and all the hope from the original is now lost, replaced by... silence. And the visual... the musicians and the writers so close yet so far, the completely dead and abandoned world, once again just reinforces how there is no hope, nobody takes the warning, and all these years later it's all the same, it's all worse. I have goosebumps all over and tears in my eyes, I don't remember the last time a song moved me this much.
Forgetting Iron Maiden? Honestly though David is a fantastic baritone singer that doesn't get nearly enough credit for his voice, early on he made some comments that rubbed people the wrong way and until relatively recently a significant amount of the metalhead community wrongfully wrote him off as a cheesy prick. Fantastic singer and especially these days a really cool guy who isn't afraid to admit his mistakes, mad respect for David.
I'm 75 and remember when Simon and Garfunkel came out with this blockbuster song. We listened to it over and over. This version gives me goosebumps and is just as powerful!
Happy New Years Disturbed !!! Here again to listen to David sing and the awesome band ! May you all continue your journey many many years ahead. Why ? Because you are great ! Hugs & Kisses 😊
Never heard of Disturbed until this , every so often I just you tube and play one of the many versions . I grew up on Simon and Garfunkel but this just appeals soo deep to me .the range of the voice is just amazing . Long may we listen to this
In an interview shortly after he covered the song David Draiman said that Paul Simon said that his version of it had totally superseded what his song was and had made it his own which he took is the very highest of compliments. And I'm paraphrasing there but this is probably my favorite version I've ever heard of the song even knowing the original. The range of his voice is absolutely spectacular. their usual stuff is definitely a little harder but definitely worth a listen if you haven't heard of them before.
There is power in his voice and song. Keep up the fight, you got this. Merry Christmas 🎄
I'm so happy for you. It's not a sprint it's a marathon. One step at a time. I lost many people to meth. My younger brother, I miss the most.
Bravo to you!
May Heaven await you.

Cheers sir - good music transcends time and generations indeed.
Cheers from the other side of the world!!
When Paul Simon himself says " it is now your song" there is no higher praise.....i am dumbfounded at this masterly retelling
Trent Reznor said the same after hearing Johnny Cash's cover of hurt.
Like you say, it really is the greatest compliment one artist cann pay another.
@@StjDUK what an honor!! 🙏❤️
@StjDUK, it's like Paul Simon was saying "man this song was written and waiting for you to sing it. I see that this version has one-billion, (1 billion) views...WOW!!!

BELIEVE ME , BUT MOST IMPORTANT , BELIEVE IN YOU ! easy.... a big hug !
We will always walk n talk with you. Life happens in so many different ways. I know. Just keep being and asking. We'll be there. Cuz we know

I'm here! Just turned 67 this month. I listen every day.

The following verse...
And in the naked light, I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never shared
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence
The verse makes me think of today with people doing nothing but their heads down texting on their phones, "talking without speaking, hearing without listening".
I am from Hungary, but I feel the same.

Great voice. Does he do musical theatre too? I know he's well known but this is my first exposure to his music. More familiar with Paul Simon.

I lost my elderly mum just over 4 months ago. I used to play music to her regularly of which she loved this song by Disturbed. She was 92 yrs old and had vascular dementia. Makes me cry when I hear this song but I know she is around in love and spirit.
I'm sorry for your loss. This is a beautiful song to remember her by
If she was 92 years old I can tell you right the fuck now, she did not like the that group of players. Simon and Garfunkel was who played this song. Not that shit crap remake of garbage
I believe she's still around you. She still loves you.❤
Sorry for your loss, may she be resting in peace, may her memory bring you more smiles than tears.
so very sorry for your loss. I lost my mum 2 years ago and it's as fresh today as it has ever been. Think of the happiness your mum felt in those moments you shared, let that joy into your heart and feel the happiness she must have experienced. You gave her that.
He poured out his soul singing this song....that's a gift.
Most definitely. He showed his range and it is perfect
And what a beautiful soul he has
This song brings me back to lonely nights staring at the stars while deployed in Iraq in 04.... the sounds of gunfire and choppers overhead overlapped by the sounds of silence in my own head while watching the stars wishing for a peace I couldn't observe......
thank you for this masterpiece...
I hope you well, my friend!
I wish you more peace over the years take care brother thank you
Oh dear friend George, your history is even worse. I hope you live well these days...

Hello! 🙌🏼🥳🙏🏻
Hi
I’ll be honest. When I first heard that Disturbed made a cover of this song, I was highly sceptical. I love Disturbed, but hearing that they were doing a song by Simon and Garfunkel left me thinking that they were going to end up butchering the original. But then I went in and listened to this song and, let me just say, I was blown away. I’ve now heard this song more times than I can count and everytime I hear it, it’s just as amazing as when I first heard it. I will always love Disturbed, regardless of what other people say.
You're absolutely right. I love it.
💕🌹🎶
Sad to say but I actually like this version better than the original and I'm not one for remakes.
It's an awesome take on the original. In fact it's better.

You just blew my mind.
Well friends, that time may be upon us......
Experienced. That is the only word to describe hearing this song. You don’t “listen” to it. You don’t dance to it. You EXPERIENCE it. S&G gave us the poetry, David Draiman gave us the warning.
...and re-experience it.
You become it.
Listening to something is a form of experience though

This version of Simon and Garfunkel's song echoes the times in which we now find ourselves... Dark, disturbing and full of rage.
I love David's voice, absolutely flawless.
I'll respect your privacy, Pardon me for writing in your comment am impressed by your personality. I admire your kind demeanour. I mean It's quite impressive the way you expressed yourself, and I can tell you are an easygoing person someone worth spending time with. sorry if this sounds weird, but I can tell you're a very positive person. If it's okay with you, I'd love to be friends.
Which is why Disturbed's version is so perfect. Unbelievable!

Wow! The fact that there is something

David Draiman: Yes please

I decide this song to the love of my life, Helen Williams, who lost her life to covid beginning of December, god bless you xxxx

It's fun to see how many of them can actually sing. The dude from Slipknot can sign his fucking ass off too. Check out Stone Sour.... his other band. It's sorta like this on some tracks.
stone sour is amazing

No matter how many times I hear it, I cannot get over how well done it is. His voice is perfect for it and they build it up perfectly, the crescendo is right where it is supposed to be for that grand ending. Well done, well done.

Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. John 3:11 🌅

Amazing is this very relatable song it's just so touching,to me anyway, January 25 anyone else here ?
What a great voice.Thank you so much.
Oh shit...I got a whole new meaning out of this cover. His intensity and deepness brought more of a frustrated and angry feel for the state of humanity. I just love how the lyrics are so applicable decades after this song was first written - I have a feeling it will be applicable for years to come.
Liz Xu actually the fact that it will still be relevant decades later is what makes it so haunting.
Liz Xu agreed
There will be a time when we'll not sing any songs but still be as frustrated about the state of humanity as you were while listening to this song. That time is near. I only hope that I don't make it to that time ever.
Liz Xu to be fair it kinda pisses me off that this song is still relevant half a century later

This song… the power in his voice, the messages he brings… it’s golden…
His words are saying “don’t stay silent and cower in sadness, speak out and let everyone hear you” not to mention a sub-message when he says “hello darkness, my old friend”
Him saying that is saying “don run from the darkness, confront it, fight it, stand your ground”

So much power. How can he even breathe singing like that? I can't.
@@GuySmithSmoke I would end up having to stagger breathe just to keep some of his phrases going that are in the higher range while the lower notes get harder for me to fully project out especially on his lowest notes making me feel like I have to sing those notes up an octave to keep them in my comfort zone

I'm always skeptical when it comes to S&G covers. I tend to regard them as ... almost sacred, not to be messed with... but, this cover - I love it. You totally GET the song. The feeling, the emotion, the meaning, everything. This is truly a magnificent interpretation.
the Bangles did a hell of a cover of hazy shade of winter in the 80s
This song was my intro to Simon and Garfunkel way back in their '60s....it meant so much to me then but this is a transformation...POWERFUL!!!!
Agree
I couldn't disagree more, but repsect you opinion. For me, I think replacing the very REAL and subtle meditation on REAL death, wth the performative (almost pantomime) faux-edgy and faux-dark metal cosplay aesthetics, and straining to seem all doomy.... is absolutely not getting it at all. At all. It's like if Michael Bay directed a remake of 'Apocalypse Now' . I'm sure the intent is heartfelt, but it cheapens the song with overcooked gurning and melodrama.

Hello, darkness, my old friend.
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping.
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence.
In restless dreams I walked alone.
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp.
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence.
And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more.
People talking without speaking.
People hearing without listening.
People writing songs that voices never share.
And no one dare
Disturb the sound of silence.
"Fools," said I, "You do not know:
Silence, like a cancer, grows.
Hear my words that I might teach you.
Take my arms that I might reach you,"
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence.
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming.
And the sign said,
"The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls.
And whispered in the sound of silence."
Yes.. Simon Garfunkel sure could write songs...

I’m not going to start with a tirade of abuse before you write me off as a nob 🤣 I love original tunes and genuinely believe, as a rule, don’t copy. However, this version, performed live as well, isn’t auto-tune at all. How does auto-tune come into it I really can’t see where you’re coming from?

Paul’s version is Gods mercy. Second version by Disturbed is Gods wrath!
Paul Simon who wrote this song (and who wrote all the songs-lyrics and music for Simon & Garfunkel) apparently saw Disturbed performing this song on a late night show and contacted the band saying he was very impressed by their "powerful " performance of this song.
I remember he told disturbed once that "this was his song now, not mine"
@JamesRichmond yeah and David was crying it got emotional
Nowadays , nobody can just cover a song in a late night show without asking the copyright question .
This story seems a bit constructed ...

This is brilliant, awesome and otherworldly! I was in my teens when this was first released. This is better!

In an interview shortly after he covered the song David Draiman said that Paul Simon said that his version of it had totally superseded what his song was and had made it his own which he took is the very highest of compliments.
