- The steps for installing Steam on ChromeOS Flex have changed a bit since the last video, so here are up to date instructions for getting Steam up and running on a chrome os Flex or a chromebook via flathub and flatpak, updated for late 2023.

I need to make a video about this, but what you do with the black screen, is move your mouse cursor to the top-left of the black screen, and you will be able to click on the menu button, go down to settings, go to interface, and turn off GPU accelerated web views. That will fix it!

Anyone with the issue of needing 1.11.1 version or any other version for that matter you can install the almost bleeding edge version of flatpak by doing "sudo apt install -t bullseye-backports flatpak" without the quotes.

It worked perfect but sadly my chrome book sucks and has tiny storage space but thank u man you know what your doing this definitely works for those of you with lots of space. I hate chrome books they are just awful and shouldn’t exist.

I'm having an issue where when I attempt to launch steam after downloading it, my screen goes onto a white screen. It shoes the shadow of what use to be the calendar and clock on the right of the shelf (my shelf is positioned at the bottom of the screen). Any attempted interactions like clicking the mouse don't work. It'll only return to normal after a hard reset, but if I reattempt to launch steam the same issue occurs. I dont know what to do, could you provide some advice on how to fix this issue? I am running chrome OS Flex.

Hi, for me to install steam it says I need flatpak ver 1.11 and from flathub it's only installing 1.10. What can I do? thanks.

I followed your instructions and they worked PERFECTLY!!! Thank you. However, when I then use that newly installed version of Steam, it comes up with my true library (the other installed version would never show my library) but it will then ONLY run the games via screencast. I even installed a Linux game on the Chromebook, I can see the newly created icon, and it only wants to stream that from my MS PC as well. Do I need to uninstall the Steam Link?
You shouldn't need to. Make sure that you enable using the compatibility tools for all titles (go to steam settings -> compatibility) which should allow you to install non-linux games.

Followed each step and it worked, I have steam installed now but when I open it, the screen is just black, was wondering if anyone else had this issue, thanks in advance

edit, found a soulution:
1> go in chrome to chrome://flags
2>find 'Crostini GPU Suppor' and disable it
3>now open steam, should works now
4>go to settings >interface > uncheck Enable GPU accelarated rendering in webvies
5>restart steam and exit
6>now go back to flags and enable Crostini GPU Support

within the first few steps after typing debian i dont have the option to even click the thing bookworm i only have default,enabled, and disabled

As soon as I press play the screen starts for a second and then stops
when i install steam from terminal it says "error: Nothing matches com.valvesoftware.Steam in remote flathub" did i skip a step or smth???
Same for me! I think it expired, so the tutorial won't work anymore

If I have time this weekend I will try it again on a fresh install and see what I can figure out
Any suggestions on how to add a game from your Chromebook files on to Steam.
What type of game? Like a web based one, or one that is installed in the Linux container? I think Steam will only be able to find Linux games installed in the Linux container
@@BrandonStecklein its an exe game called DCGO.exe. I don't believe that it's installed in a Linux container. I will try to figure out how to move the file to one.
What Cromebooks that are cheep would work with this
Exact models I am not sure, but I think to run good you would want at least 8gb ram and an intel or amd CPU (not ARM), so that does sort of knock a lot of the really cheap chromebooks out of the running. that said, if you can find a used windows laptop from several generations ago you might have better luck, and can even install linux or chrome os flex on it

make sure you have added the flathub repo: flatpak --user remote-add --if-not-exists flathub dl.flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo

and either option works, I get the same error again
@@tyson9344 Interesting. Maybe if you haven't done too much on the Linux container yet, it might be easier to just remove Linux and restart from the beginning

If you put the mouse in the top-right corner you can "find" the settings menu. If you can get into that, you can disable an option about GPU accelerated menus (or something of that sort, I do not remember off the top of my head) and fix the black screen
