    As a kiwi, I have to also say another negative is our prices for games.
    New releases are coming out at like $120 - $130 on console, and consoles themselves are expensive as well.
    Importing games into the country is also quite a difficult task, because of shipping costs and the fact that NZ is such a small gaming market that we don't really get many special editions so they sell out super fast.
    Speaking of importing as well, there's a bunch of companies that don't even ship here either.

    Rural New Zealander here. As much as I love to play online games, I run on a data cap, meaning my internet will straight up stop when it reaches that cap, it doesn't throttle.
    This forces me to play singleplayer games, and by the time I want to play an online game, theres usually an update available, and by the time I download it, I already wasted time trying to play online only to be stopped by this inconvient barrier.
    Even if I do play online, like you mentioned, the ping is terrible. Either I play in a US server with 200+ ping or I play on a NZ server with no players. I simply cannot play competetively and I'm not willing to move into another country just to get the best ping.
    Oh yeah, the data cap I mentioned earlier makes it impossible to fully download AAA games in one evening. I usually have to take my device to someone elses place just to download games, forcing me to resort to Indie games or older games because they contain far less gigabytes to download. Either that or I attempt to download games 2 GB/day just to avoid reaching my internet data cap.
    This is exactly the reason why I avoid digital downloads and usually stick to physical media, but even then, video games are pricey in New Zealand.
    Despite my personal struggles, I was able to enjoy video games as a hobby, as I adapted to these limitations and my preferred genre was singleplayer or indie games.

      That is rough. Do you have a daily cap? I’m European and thank god for awesome internet here. It’s fast, stable and no data cap (yet). The problem with physical media nowadays is that the discs are basically glorified download keys. The game is not on there anymore so you have to download it anyway. Why is it that internet in New Zealand is still relatively bad. Expensive I can imagine but why is it bad?

    • @mooncakev1689
      @mooncakev1689 27 дней назад +8

      @@conservo3203 Most of New Zealand's internet isn't bad, but the reason some rural areas are behind is due to a lack in infrastructure there. I've been on gigabit (I've since moved down to a 200mbps plan) for a while now and at a decent price, so it really depends on where your located.

    One thing that annoys me about gaming in NZ is the regional pricing.
    If a game is $60USD, you'd expect to pay around $100NZD. Some are $70USD, so we pay $120NZD - which is a direct conversion. Some triple-A publishers are even selling games for $130NZD which is nearly $80USD. This is already bullshit in-and-of itself.
    Our wages are lower than the US by an average of ~63%. We earn significantly less, yet we're paying the same amount (sometimes more) than what they're paying in the US.
    The Valve recommended regional price for $60USD games is set at $86NZD, and for $70USD games it's $100NZD, yet many developers continue to ignore the suggested regional price.

    Oh boy… Chicago guy moving to NZ here, first lemme say this was a very useful video. As great as our internet is, I’ve definitely experienced many things mentioned in this video. I don’t live in the area anymore, but i used to live in a backwoods area of america and problems 2, 4, and 6 happened a decent amount. It got so bad that when I was a little kid on a VR lobby I thought ping was a measure of your own performance so I asked “More ping is good… right?” And just got a bunch of oooohs from the other people in the lobby. I didnt do a lot of online gaming as a kid in general though, so that is probably why i had no idea what ping was. It was still high though, usually 110 on a good day and 210 at worst. Eventually i moved into an offshoot of a posh area, meaning i no longer dealt with slow internet. There’s still a stigma though, but it switched from “you’re a nerd!” to gamers, to more of a “holier than thou” attitude from people who don’t game towards people who play video games. I will miss having high download speeds and low ping when i go to new zealand, but i’m going to try to be on the internet less anyway. Hope this comment provided insight to anybody who read it fully, and this is of course just my personal experience. That concludes my little yapfest.

    0:34 I'm gonna assume from the 'Blenheim Time' in the top corner that you're also from my hometown? If so, it's honestly super cool - I've never seen anyone from Blenheim on the internet that I can remember. It can be pretty weird living in England where everyone apparently knows random towns I've never heard of, but the only places they know back home are Auckland and Wellington.
    I think, like the gaming scene you've covered, most of New Zealand is kind of culturally sealed off from the world - the most I get when I mention where I'm from in the UK is a Lord of the Rings joke or a comment about Taika Waititi. 95% of the time, people assume I'm Australian or South African! Nice to see another Kiwi out here in the internet wilderness.
    This was a really enjoyable and informative video - I particularly resonated with the parts about making friends through games. I'd have loved to meet more people through gaming, but New Zealand's relative isolation and timezone fuckery meant it was really difficult to get a regular player group going, or any kind of player group. Most niche games outside of modern FPS shooters and trending games have really low player counts in Aus/NZ, so I either ended up playing single-player or suffering with shit ping on US/Asia servers. Moving to the UK changed SO MUCH in that regard: European servers were suddenly full of players, and my ping was fantastic.
    Anyway, I'll stop yapping. Hope you're having a good one mate!

Although there weren't many players so I switched to the NA server for more competitive gameplay and dealing with the 200+ ping. I had learnt to deal with it and don't know anything else. I have given up any other games due to the high costs and the need for a better computer for most of them. My current laptop I've had for 7 years and it is struggling these days but I can't afford something better. From Hawaii, we have many of the same issues, except we are the last time zone instead of the first. We also have the problem that our main ISP is based in Kansas so often internet location services report we are 4000 miles from where we actually are giving us the worst servers possible. This caused us to get a VPN and do most of our playing on VPN connections as if we are in San Francisco, which optimizes our undersea connections to the lmainland and gives us some of the widest selections of servers. This works great when we game in the daytime or early evening but in the later evening the US west coast is often going to bed so we switch either to a bigger city like LA or we connect to Sydney, Seoul, or Tokyo. This lets us get fuller lobbies whenever we want and the lag is not bad as long as we pick cities that are connected directly to the undersea pacific fibre lines. Late nigt here, If we don't find people in Sydney we jump to London or even the US east coast, however then sometimes FPS lag starts getting us. We've made many friends in these other cities and the only negative is trying to avoid people who just want to come stay in Hawaii free 😮. If you try a VPN you might find picking Sydney Melbourne or SFO improves lobbies quite a bit.

As for the AU/NZ Confusion, i never really cared but i did pay heed to correct them in the least - not everyone knows geography and i don’t expect others to really care where i’m from, i’m just trying to have fun. The only problem is you have to basically be in the city to get that, in rural areas like where I live the highest government supplied speeds are 3 download and 0.9 upload but I pay double of how much you’d pay for 500 down and upload in the city in order to get 55 down and 30 up using some company that supplies rural internet. The ping to Australia isn’t amazing but not terrible all around nz, I get like 8-20 depending what the game is but anywhere outside Oceania is well above 100 ping

    Player lobby numbers seem to depend a lot on timezones, even the Asian/Aussie ones are still a few hours behind. Internet quality is still a work in progress, though better than it used to be 15-20 years back, and apparently better than in Oz. Very much a city/big town thing if you want the most out of it.
    Being confused with Oz or being omitted from maps might be to our strategic advantage, if a nuclear war somehow manages to break out.

    This is the first video I watched of this channel and it's pretty cool.
    As an anecdote, I'm from the US I'm 12 and I have a lot of friends that are from New Zealand. A lot. I met all of them playing games like GTA doing heists or racing or playing Fortnite or Call of Duty. Despite the distance we are very good friends hoping to meet each other in the future. It's very interesting how the connection between games allows this. We've never had lag problems when we play, the only problem is that when it's day here, it's night there. But we always make the effort and we all do our part to play when we can, especially on vacation. It's pretty cool and I'm glad to have friends from all over the world and of course Oceania. Good video I'm subscribing

    Ghosts of Tabor, which is basically VR Tarkov recently changed their sever matchmaking system which made it pretty much unplayable in NZ as it would prioritise full lobbies, meaning I would wait 5+ minutes before it would give up and load me into a raid alone which sucks because the PvP is the main aspect of the game

    Chur brudda @BobbysBored I just found this video, I'm also from New Zealand, actually over the waters in South Island, Nelson. What you said is 100% accurate. Keep up the grind, bro, and I also hate how most game developers still use regional server systems and oceanic servers as being mainly the most dead servers in all gaming history. It would be good if most games had more server switch capabilities, but that's my little rant about gaming in New Zealand. Thanks for making this video bro for the world to see and shedding light on gaming in New Zealand. Kia kaha my bro and keep doing that Mahi it will pay off.

    here in India the servers are a hit or miss. Gaming culture mostly revolves around mobile games (PUBG mobile) and the small no. of people who do play on pc/consoles only care about popular AAA titles like rdr2 or competitive games. I used to live in Australia 6 years ago until I met this guy on rocket league (back in the good days) and then we started talking and eventually got together, I moved to NZ to live with him 4 years ago, he proposed this year and this month will be our 6 year anniversary. Best choice I've ever done, and we've also met 3 of our other NZ friends and still good friends now with one even inviting us to their wedding, And when I came back to Australia (I visit yearly) I met another 4 of my Australian friends and we've gotten so close that when we eventually move back to Australia we are planning on living together and we still basically play daily. Another thing, in New Zealand ping, mainly in fps kind of games like CSGO or Valorant where even a ten ping difference would give you a disadvantage, will most likely be around 50 but in Australia you would get less than 10 ping giving a HUGE advantage. Australia lines up fairly similarly with you guys funnily enough.
    Positives:
    1. Also get games early compared to rest of the world
    2. I consistently play with lots of the same people in other matches and run into plenty of people I've played with before. It's definitely not as easy for an irl meet-up though.
    3. Server issues from player count don't exist either, if anything there's not enough people.
    Negatives:
    1. Old games never have lobbies, but even some newer games don't have lobbies. I was on WarZone last night and a game literally started with 7 people on quads.
    2. 150ms on Asian servers, 180-200ms on US servers and then about 250ms on EU servers, it sucks.
    3. Good wifi comes at a price, and even then the best wifi is at most 4GB/s and after paying for that you'll never see the full extent of it because of connection.
    4. From a few people I've talked to, if you're not living in or next to any of the major cities the wifi is usually horrible, and the more central you go the worse it gets.
    5. Any "mid day" based US event happens at like 3:00am - 5:00am, it's just not fun.
    6. Not so much, Aussies are pretty white when it comes to games and it's "normal" so to say
    7. Same as point 6.
    8. Luckily being Australian, no one confuses us as Kiwi. It does disappoint me when someone calls a Kiwi Australian though, geography isn't that hard.
    Anyways, thought I'd give some comparison to the Aussie side of things since we're on the far corner of the world alongside you guys. Love seeing all you Kiwi's in lobbies, you're always much more fun to talk with compared to the bogans.

      regarding point 3 in negatives, this is confusing the shit out of me 4GB/s is fucking insane to put that in perspective nz was shown in this video to have 100+ mbps average, 4GB/s is 32,000Mbps! basically NO ONE has that connection outside of testing labs/internal networks ran by corporations/governments.
      I am personally on a 1000Mbps/50Mbps plan and i usually am able to use most if not all of my entire connection on a majority of services at least in country, international is hit or miss. i pay $100 a month for this plan.
      I assume you use wifi for everything since you refer to the internet as "wifi" plug a cable in your speeds should go up

    • @GoldenGamer-64
      @GoldenGamer-64 Месяц назад

      @@Koalaza Yeah the 4GB/s thing was a bit confusing to me too, that's just what some of the providers sites I looked at had as an option which made no sense to me but I wasn't so bothered as to fully dive into it. I probably read it wrong and put it down wrong in the original comment. From what I understand the average speed here is around 150Mbps and at the top end it gets up to about 1000Mbps like you said.
      I personally pay for about 750Mbps down, not entirely sure about my upload but its probably around the 25-50Mbps range.
      For the ethernet point, there's literally no access points around my house for some reason and unless I decide to run a 40m cable from the downstairs room to my room I'm not gonna be getting direct cable. I still manage to get about 450-500Mbps on average though.

    • @Koalaza
      @Koalaza Месяц назад

      @@GoldenGamer-64 I don't believe 750 down plans exist its only 25/5 (obsolete soon or is i forgot) 50/10 100/10-20 250/25 and 1000/50 *you're probably on this one*. there are also the "business plans" which is just the same plan with increased upload
      in regards to you not having any ethernet ports I understand i 2 have had that issue, honestly your best bet is to try out an Ethernet over Power adapter kit, give amazon a look so if you find the item to be unsatisfactory you can just ship it back for a refund, best case scenario it works SWEET! worst case you didn't lose anything but a bit of time, all you need is a power point at each end and 2 ethernet cables (comes in the box) if where your router is located only has a singular powerpoint i recommend you pickup one of the kits that have a pass through
      Don't plug it into a powerbrick/strip/etc of any sort if you decide to give it a go only the wall.
