I just have to say, thanks a million for this video. My daughter has a decent PC at my place but nothing to use at her mother's house (we're separated), and so I reconditioned an old HP laptop into something useful using Chrome OS, but Chrome Remote Desktop was proving to be a pretty terrible experience for her to control the PC remotely. Using your directions I was able to install Steam and now she can use Steam's Remote Play feature to get a much more responsive experience (as well as being able to play games). You rock!
When I try the first command in terminal, I get the following: *sudo: command not found* Googling reveals that this is caused by some distributions of Linux not including the "sudo" command. (Trying the command without the sudo prefix gives me: *could not open lock file /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (13: Permission denied)* and a host of other errors cascading from that one, presumably because I don't have access without sudo.) Most tutorials for fixing this error, ie installing/adding the sudo command, involve accessing root (or something like that, I think? Security issues abound) or the "su" command, but when I try to use "su" and input my password, it gives me: *su: Authentication failure* I'm quite positive I'm typing my password right; it's the only password I use to log into the Chromebook, as I only have one account and am the sole owner. It's my Google account password; is this not the password the Chromebook is expecting?
On mine there is no password at all. Are you using Chrome OS Flex or a regular chromebook? Maybe it's not the same on a normal Chromebook, I will need to research :-/
great video, hope that chrome os flex gets more competative so I can replace windows finally. One question regardin steam: Can you try to subsribe to a workshop element? I am wondering if that works
Hey, my brother has a broken pc and we want to get chrome os flex on it. Does the os take a gpu like a 1050Ti, or RTX series? In terms of proton on steam play :) this is the most needed thing for us
I think if Steam is a priority, you might consider a Linux distro right now instead. There are still quite a bit of quirks with Flex that I have been noticing, especially with steam. Evidently there will be a native steam client coming to Chrome OS soon, so the story might change at that point. But right now, the gaming situation is not optimal...
my computer says that linux dev features are not available for my device. i cant seem to find a work around does this mean i have to switch os's for steam?
i know this is months later and i probably wont get a response but here i go. Thanks for the video, im a novice and i was able to install steam on chrome os flex. but steam wont detect my usb controller and i cant figure out why. when i plug it in a pop up comes up in chrome asking to connect to linux, i do that. but steam says no controller connected. any advice?
When I enter the first command it keeps saying libc6-i386 has no installation candidate. It says the package is missing has been obsoleted or is only available from another source. However the following packages replace it. Libc6:i386 Please help I've been trying for 5 hours to get steam on Lenovo Chromebook. Still has libc.so.6 error
Please check out my newer video on installing steam via Flatpak, it is a lot smoother/easier to do. Should be easy to find, it is one of the last few videos I did from just a few weeks ago
i spoke to soon. it pretends to have linux running but in the terminal window i got "Error starting penguin container: 5 Launching vmshell failed: Error starting crostini for terminal: 5" tired to remove and add linux again, got an error message that VM cant launch, after that i see it as enabled again but does not work
Cloud gaming would be your best bet, Steam games have been hit or miss in my testing, although I did play a game on Amazon Luna (not GTA5) and it did work good on Flex
it appears You are missing the following 32-bit libraries, and Steam may not run: libc.so.6 when i try to run it but i have actually done the things to solve it

awesome, glad you got her set up!

libc.so.6. What can I do to solve this problem?
same
Thanks, very helpful. Got it installed first try with you tutorial.

Worked perfectly for me! Thank you! :)
I hope they bring Borealis Steam and Android apps to Flex one day. I'm sure that can get masses to switch over to Chrome OS Flex
it said package libc6-i386 has no installation candidate
sudo apt-get install libc6-i386
I think this doesn't work for x32bit arm systems..

You guess i can install nvidia drivers, discord and cs go on Chrome Os?
I wouldn't count on getting nvidia drivers to work unless the specific card was supported by Flex out of the box
worked but how can i play games like fifa on this seems cant install
If it is a Windows game, you will need to go into Steam settings and enable Steam Play, which allows Windows games to run on Linux
What are the things which you have installed through commands in order to install steam?
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libc6-i386
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt install libgl1-mesa-dri:i386 libgl1:i386
