Gaming on Chromebooks. It's been a topic we've discussed in so many ways over the years. From web-based games to Android games to streaming games via Stadia or GeForce Now...it has become clear that people want to be able to get a bit of gaming done on their Chromebooks. The method of gaming we've been waiting for the longest, though, is Steam. Announced as an official work in progress back in January of 2020, I think I speak for everyone that's been keeping up with all this when I say it's been a long, long time coming. But that wait is now officially over as Steam is finally launching on Chrome OS!

My guess is it's a GPU thing. Unless companies make Chromebooks with dedicated GPUs, you'll have to stick with the one built into your processor and Intel has been recycling the same integrated graphics for a long while, up until their 11th gen CPUs.
With its 11th gen processors they introduced Iris Xe, which is a new integrated graphics solution that will perform significantly better. Still not to the level of a dedicate GPU, but it's a great improvement none the less.
You can definitely play games on a 10th core, but if they want to make sure the gaming experience is at least somewhat smooth for all users then they want to set the bar a bit higher for who the users are

I am hopeful that at some point Google will allow (or more likely clever folk will find an unofficial loophole for) people to install Steam on lower-end chipset. Once that happens I just want to install some digital board games, 2D platformers, and the furthest I'd push my current Chromebook is Portal 1 & 2.

ChromeOS is running the Linux kernel and containers aren't virtual machines, so this is basically running a native Linux game from 2006 on Linux. Still, it's pretty cool, and the game is great. Love to see how multiple Linux-based OS-es are benefiting from Valve's Linux gaming efforts.

This is agreat, and I especially like that Steam runs in its own container allowing a greater level of optimisation for running games. I currently have Steam installed on my Lenovo Flex 5 Chromebook which has a 10th gen intel i5 core quad processor 8 GB RAM and I upgraded the stock 128GB NVMe SSD to a 256GB NVMe SSD. Steam had to be installed in the existing Linux container, and flags such as Linux pointer lock had to be set. Any games that run with a mouse and keyboard such as Rimworld and Kentucky Route Zero work well, but games needing a controller are more problematic, and sometimes graphics scaling is a challenge. So, this looks to be great solution, but the challenge will be sourcing a Chromebook with Intel i7 processor, and it's the lower performance Chromebooks that are typically in stock!

It seems difficult to create a cloud gaming model service where you own the games, but rent the hardware. The rights holder for the games will always want to be paid a second time round. This is the bit problem Geforce Now has. Valve may be in a better position to set up something like this, as they already have agreements of sorts with rights holders to act as a distribution platform.

It's still beta but it works and I was able to install it from the Steam website without any trickery. With every Chrome OS update lately I tried to install Steam and it worked this time. It doesn't support external storage yet, sd card external hard drive , but I think it will be added eventually. I play 2d style fighting games and side scrollers so the i3 is doing okay. my only issue is storage because even a game like Arcana Heart is 9gb in size, so I can't access my whole Steam library.

Finally got around to watching your video. My only question is, by container, do you mean a micro virtualization or emulation? Like the Debian container. The Race is on. Stadia already runs so great on home wifi. One of these few competitors is soon to perfect this technology for mobile phones. This requires too much of a $$$ investment for me to pay much attention to but it is an impressive feat in technology. I suspect Microsoft, Steam and Google all collaborated, due to intellectual property restraints.

I would've liked you to have tried games created in the last decade, playing games from 15 or more years ago is not that impressive for an 11th gen Core i5. Maybe try GTA V, it runs on a potato

I wonder if I can install other games into the container. Like League of Legends which is completely playable on Linux. I played it in Crouton ages ago.

It's bizarre that Google tries so hard to make steam run on Chromebooks when they have stadia. Why not make stadia have special features on Chromebooks? And also push Chromebooks with higher refresh rates.

Bigger catalog plus Google isn't a closed system like macOs

Google's big enough different teams likely have different objectives. It might just be that ChromeOS and Android teams don't even work with Stadia much.

@@seabrookmx To me that's an achilles' heel with Google at large - the company is so enormous, that different teams have different goals and don't check in with one another... except the appeal of the google ecosystem is supposed to be how cohesive and cross-compatible everything is.
How do I get excited about the Chrome team embracing Steam when I have Stadia but neither the Stadia Team nor Chrome team are embracing Stadia? I just drop Stadia, I guess? Where is my attention intended to be turned to?

The problem with Chromebooks is their _CPUs_ which. if it was _i5_ or at least _i3_ things have been totally different!

What doesn't really convince me about this is that if you want to use steam on chromeOS you'll need a Chromebook with good hardware, which is going to bumb up the price to the point where you might as well buy a windows laptop that will have similar hardware, but without the restrictions of chromeOS. It kind of defeats the purpose of Chromebooks imo
