  • I tried for 1,300 miles, but a loud exhaust isn't for me, so I ride up to Joe from ‪@TheWurks‬ to switch the exhaust back to standard, as well as taking a look at his current projects, including a Royal Enfield 350 and a Honda project bike.
    And we go through the upgrades done too the Bonneville.
    Thanks to Chris from www.ultimatetwinperformance.co.uk for helping with knowledge and parts.

    Use earplugs! Hell you should use them even with quiet exhausts because what is a major source of tinnitus in motorcycling is not the exhaust, it is the wind. It may not feel like it because it is a steady, pink noise like, hum but in reality in highways the loudness is way above the threshold that eventually causes hearing damage and tinnitus.
    When you are bobbing around town, it is fine to go without but when you are traveling anything further and especially on highways, please use earplugs.

    I don't like loud exhausts either. I did a biking holiday last year in France with my son. We had a great time. But his (wonderful) Suzuki GT 380 (46 years old) has extremely loud exhausts. Every time he started the engine it sounded like World War 3 had started! I was on my 1988 BMW K75. I couldn't hear my own bike! However, we had a great trip, and his bike drew a lot of attention wherever we parked up. And all credit for him for completeing such a trip on such an old bike. He lives near Glasgow, rode to Plymouth, ferry to Santander, Spain (where I met up with him), then through the Pyrenees to France. Then the same return journey. All on a 380 cc 2 stroke bike.
    I love your original exhausts. Bike sounds fabulous. Good decision.

      Have to agree , have riden and loved motorbikes for 26 years and have sometimes fitted quiet 'after market' exhausts..mainly because I was curious about the effect on the handling and the hype ...but I also live on a road approaching great twisty biking roads and the amount of hot hatches and bikes running SILLY loud exhausts that disturb everyone inside the house and we can still hear literally a mile up the road when they open it up is just ridiculous ...and it seems the ones warming up like Rossi sometimes doing well over 60 in a 30 outside my drive mostly run loud pipes as well...that stuff makes most of my neighbours hate motorbikes and hot hatches. At some point these inconsiderate people will make noise cameras and fines a new and common form of council revenue generation...some riders just need to be more considerate or keep it for the track days.

    I think almost all riders have a limit to their acceptable noise level. I also think it is true that term "loud" is very subjective. What is loud for one may be acceptable to the next rider. There isn't a absolute right and wrong across the board and for every occasion. I have several different exhaust systems for my Thruxton R. The loudest one is great for land speed racing but way too loud for hours of riding for almost anyone.
    I don’t think the tors Freddie had are too loud even for longer rides for most riders but if it is for Freddie then changing them is the right choice.

    The exhaust on my 1980 Suzuki GS550 has been getting progressively louder over the last year because of a rust hole underneath. I tried a temporary repair (tin can, paste and Jubilee clips), which held for several months, but then started getting louder again. It was starting to get embarrassing, so I took it off, cut out the corrosion, fabricated repair sections from steel tube and welded it back together. It's now as quiet as when it it was new, all the repairs are out of sight underneath, and for £10 worth of materials, it should last a good few more years.

    I’m going to buck the trend of the comments here. I fully agree it’s your bike, Freddie, and you do what you want to it. But I’m sad to hear you’ve changed the exhausts back to original. I wear ear plugs and always have - and I’m a fan of loud exhausts! It’s all part of the visceral experience of a bike. But, we’re all different and I’ve no problem with others having a different opinion. Enjoy your bikes and riding!

    If you don't use it already, you should try riding with protective earplugs, like Alpine MotoSafe. You shouldn't use regular earplugs.
    Joe keeps calling Freddie's Bonnie an SE, but I was under the impression it was the non-SE version (to be one it would come from factory with dual clocks with the dash lights arranged in a diamond pattern between the speedo and the tacho , brushed aluminum engine side covers, embossed tank badges, and the side panels would have the SE insignia bellow 'Boneville', which in this one were replaced by Motone's ). Can anyone confirm this?
    Also, @ 18:28, for potential buyers, any air-colled bonnie 865cc starting 2011 (maybe a few in 2010 as well) will have a CAN-bus. The easiest way to confirm this is if the clocks are analog (non CAN-bus) or if they have a digital odometer and are branded VDO, they will be a CAN-bus model. There are less year models of the non-CAN-bus versions, unfortunately.

    • @PhilWare1
      @PhilWare1 3 месяца назад

      Mines a 2010 model and like Freddie's it came with a single dash gauge i.e. a Speedo but it was all digital so a twin clocks upgrade was a simple job as replacing the mounting bracket and buying/installing a OEM rev counter and hooking it up with the existing wire connector. Literal 5 min job - took me a while to source a suitable 2nd hand tacho though to as Jo said, parts are starting to get harder to come by.

    I have a 2019 GSA and have kept the stock exhaust. Don’t get me wrong, I like the sound of a good engine and exhaust but a loud exhaust when touring, normally around 6-8 hours riding per day, gets a bit tedious on the ears in the end. It’s great what he has done to the bike, runs better, breathes better and sounds better. No need to change it now 😉

    Oh yeah, always wear earplugs. I'm an audio engineer and learned a long time ago that instantaneous loud noise the ear can recover. The road noise and wind noise is a killer long term. The ears have no defence for it. Helmets believe it or not make it worse as they magnify the frequency of the helmet and it goes strait into your ears.

  • @moddude101
    @moddude101 Месяц назад

    Like others say, use earplugs... depending on the helmet I may or may not use earplugs for short street rides but anything with higher speeds due to wind noise. I'll always wear earplugs and usually always have a spare..
    I love loud pipes only if it doesn't sound like garbage. My Buell had a great sound with aftermarket pipes. My BMW R65 sounds horrible and Ill need to find some quieter pipes or factory pipes.

    Triumph supplied TOR's and they scrape through an MOT test, just (by 1 or 2 dB).

    • @KimmoJaskari
      @KimmoJaskari 3 месяца назад

      Maybe, but the OR in TOR stands for Off Road. They're not meant to be on street bikes, not really, though of course people use them like that.

      @KimmoJaskari Patronising w⚓️ aren't we! Yes, we _ALL_ know what OR in TOR means, _well done you!!!_ How exactly does your statement alter _anything I wrote?_ _They scrape through the MOT, just._ Never had any problem with them.
      I then ran with a TEC 2-1 Cafe exhaust system for about 12 years - same thing, just scraped through with the dB killer in, and since about a year ago I am running a TEC Clubman 2-2, and again, no problem with the MOT.
      Maybe people with a patronising nature get "special" treatment at the MOT stations, I dunno! 🤷

    14:35 and this is why I gave up on getting a '09-'10 SE Bonneville. Mind I don't have the network connections Joe has but I started realizing that, even with the great build quality, it'd be increasing difficult to get parts and they were expensive (some equivalent parts were more expensive than for Harleys). I understand it's a bit unfair to compare the huge third-part market for Harleys and for the air-cooled Bonnevilles, but I don't think Triumph really cared keeping air-cooled bonnies on the road once they released the new water-cooled in 2016.

    What mic’s are you using Freddie? I bought the cheap Comica Vimo C2 mic’s for £62 (EBay) and they are excellent. You could buy 4 pairs for the same price you paid for the expensive ones.
    I also agree about the exhaust noise. It also applies to the wind noise around the helmet. In fact any loud noise that is continuous as caused by riding.
    The latest research on tinnitus (New Scientist) suggests that the damage is caused to the nerves from the cochlear to the brain and not to the hair like structures in the cochlear.
    The tinnitus noise is caused by the brain and does not arise in the ears. It’s your brain’s way of filling in the noise levels it can no longer make out because of damage to the nerves. I don’t blame you for changing your exhausts to cut the noise levels but also consider ear protection for the wind noise too.
    If the tinnitus goes away after a few hours consider this a warning that the noise is too loud and you should be taking steps to prevent this.
    Happy riding 👍

    I have worked in video stuff for many years. As a last resort try putting your microphones in a container full of uncooked white rice, sealed. for a couple of days. It should draw out the moisture out of your mics. No guarantees, but worth a try. Water is about the worst things for these mics. Also always wear earplugs when riding.

    Thousands of people suffer hearing damage riding loud motorcycles and pay for it later in life. A loud motorcycle doesn't only affect the rider; everyone has to put up with the racket. Major changes to the engine (air intake exhaust, sprockets, etc.) need proper adjustment. Politicians only need a few bad examples to pass more restrictive laws for everyone!

    Finally someone had the guts to say it. I've got industrial deafness. Loosing your hearing to loud exhausts is just plain dumb just because you want to make some noise and sound like a bad ass !
    Pulsed noise is the worst thing you can expose your ears to. Not only that it's exhausting on a long trip.
    We get weekend warriors ripping through our village on the weekend with their illegal non stock exhausts. Nobody thinks their hard ! Just obnoxious.
    Performance tuned pipe's should reduce noise not increase it.
    Biking is hard enough on the body as it is without destroying one of your most valuable senses.

    On the subject of wind noise, I am sure I have seen Freddie use ear plugs in the past. However I would suggest the issue is with his helmet. It’s a ‘style over substance’ one made to look retro with a large aperture at the bottom. The visor seal may not be the best either. To reduce wind noise he needs a flip up model as it fits closer around the head and therefore has reduced wind roar. The looks however…….. maybe not what he prefers.
