  • In this video I list features that people don’t seem to talk much about, if at all. Features that isn’t by any means a deal breaker, but still makes me a little extra excited when its included in a camera. Some are very common and almost taken for granted, others more obscure.

    Not sure if all cameras have this, but internal pixel mapping on my Olympus EM5 II has actually fixed a hot pixel on the sensor before! The problem has never appeared again, and this was months ago. I'd also go with weather sealing as an underrated feature, as it's so liberating to be able to shoot a camera in inclement weather. A high flash sync speed can be very useful for event photography as well!

    Like many people - I like to do travel and documentary photography. Two of my favourite unrated camera features are: In camera charging (ICC) and built in GPS. The former allows me to leave the charger at home (less bulk) and the latter gives me a semi accurate location of where the photo was taken. This allows me to revisit a place after a while and take photos again from the same scene (big fan of documenting change). My G7X has in camera charging and my 6Dm2 has built in GPS. My ideal camera would have both (with USB-C charging to boot!). I await patiently for someone to invent this haha!

      Not directing any hate towards Sony, since their cameras are technological marvels and the image quality you can get out of them is second to none, but I really don't like using them at all. One day maybe they'll fix that and then there'll be nothing left to stop me jumping onto that system.

  • @mvonwalter6927
    @mvonwalter6927 5 лет назад +6

    Matthius - you're killing it with these two. I have to say, one thing I really want to know from reviewers is start-up time. Not a feature, but still a huge metric for me.
    Maybe do one based on handling design. For example, I am learning the hard way just what you meant about the feel of the Fuji XT2/3 vs. X-Pro2 (and X-E1/2/3 by many of those measures).

    • @jamiefenner9443

      Hi Micaiah, amen! Hard indeed!
      My XT3 EVF stops responding after less than a minute on some settings and I have to mash the shutter and wait for it to start metering (breathe...) and turn EVF back on. When this happens, I miss the shot.
      I sometimes have to mash the shutter like a box brownie which also may result in missing a shot. What is that camera thinking about? The price of eggs?
      I consider I might buy an unmodified XH1 with the feather touch shutter!
      I use the most expensive Sony SD Cards and new ones at that, boost mode on, fresh NP126S battery, eye focus off except when shooting people of course, centre focus, AF-S, lenses any one of 35mm f1.4 (a tad slow), 35m f2 (crap lens),10-24mm, 18-55mm (I don't like this lens either!), latest XT3 firmware, Shoot on Release or Shoot on Focus makes no difference, this has nothing to do with the EVF not running and the camera not metering!
      I suspect from reading others' posts that the camera is trying too hard to save power. I don't care about short battery life,I have four spare batteries
      My X-Pro2 usually responds fast, and can take a photo even if the EVF is not lit, even then it meters correctly. It is more rare for me to miss the shot.
      All these XT3 vs XPro2 AF business is quite apart from the magical X-Pro2 OVF which I am coming to use and love even more.
      I also have an aged X-100S and I am using its OVF more and more with manual focus, it is just as fast for shoot-from-the-hip as the XT3

  • @AndrewSowerby
    @AndrewSowerby 5 лет назад +9

    Totally agree with the auto ISO as an option even in full manual mode, and internal memory can be a lifesaver (I've never had it in any camera I've owned, but I want it). Great colour SOOC is increasingly important to me as I try to my reduce the time I spend in PP as much as possible.
    I have three others that I think most reviewers (but certainly not you) gloss over or miss entirely:
    #1 ergonomics
    #2 UI / menu system
    (#1 & 2 are often lumped together and don't get much attention)
    #3 backwards compatibility / adapted lens support (hardly anyone ever talks about this, but it really matters to me)

    I would add simplicity of use. Cameras these days are so complicated it is almost impossible to set them up and remember what you did 10 minutes later. Leica is much better at this. Secondly I would add ergonomics in general. Camera companies are so busy trying to outspec each other, that they just ignore bad ergonomics, how the camera actually feels in the hand. Random button placement is another example. Sony is the king here.

    1. *Leaf shutter.* For me I really miss it when I switch from from my X100T to my XT-1. High speed flash sync opens up a lot of possibilities.
    2. *X-Trans array.* High ISO shots have a film-like look whereas IMO Bayer array shots don't. ISO 3200 black-and-white shots remind me of Kodak Plus-X and ISO 6400 Tri-X pulled a bit.
    With that said Fujifilm cameras are hardly perfect but I've come to depend on them. For most people Nikons and Canons are IMO still better "all around" cameras. I'll take a Canon for video work any day of the week and "bang for the buck" the Nikon D3500 wins the race. It's the Toyota Hilux of cameras. BTW, love the dog. =)

    Agree 100% with you about auto ISO in manual mode. I use this when shooting burlesque and events in ambient light at high ISO. I make my creative choices with aperture and shutter speed, and then I can fire away without worrying about proper exposure. Unfortunately one of the few flaws that my 5D Mk IV has is that you cannot use exposure compensation in this mode. But the body delivers solid RAW files with enough leeway in post. Keep up the good work. Love your videos.

    on top of that mountain, when I discovered there's no SD card inside my heavy DSLR which I brought all the way - ooops.
    From that time on, there's a spare card not only in my photo bag, but also in my daypack as well - 8 MP is enough!
    With some ND filter I got a nice little "pocket" (will not name it "bag" because of its size) - this one is now equipped with the ND filter, a spare battery and a spare SD card also. Whenever I go out with my daypack and the little Fuji X-E1 in it, I take this pocket as a second backup for SD-cards.

    For mirror less cameras with focus-by-wire lenses - 1) give us a focus scale for manual focus and 2) have the manual focus distance stay the same after turning the camera off and on. Fujis do both by default, Olympuses can be set to do 2 and Panasonics have only enabled 2 with the most recent models (GX9 and later). And, Panasonic, A LINE WITH A FLOWER AT ONE END AND A MOUNTAIN AT THE OTHER IS NOT A DISTANCE SCALE!

    • @gearreallydoesntmatter
      @gearreallydoesntmatter  5 лет назад

      Sadly Fuji only does 2 depending on the lens.
      Sony does 1 and 2 in for example the A7. Canon does it with ML. Ricoh of course does 1 and 2.
      The Sigma DP1 does it the best of all cameras ever made :)

  • @disraelidemon

    For street photography: manual focus switch on the lens AND the camera body. Set lens to AF, camera body to MF, and use focus lock button to set a focus distance. Unless you touch that button again you can't jog the focus by accident.

  • @Photographicelements
    @Photographicelements 5 лет назад +2

    Great video!! I work a lot with cinema cameras as well as video cameras and photography cameras.
    Dynamic Range is the most important feature to me and is often overlooked by those who demand a flippy screen. Dynamic range is also important for photography.
    2nd, for me, is file type and codec. If a camera can shoot in RAW or ProRes, I'm sold. H.265, 422 10bit also get my attention, but some of these cameras have shifted colors and require additional work in post.
    Color Science is so important, especially when delivering to clients with immediate demand. "My phone can take a photo and post it to instagram in 1 second, why do I have to wait 2 days for you to process 3,000 photos?!"
    For photography, the ability to focus in dimly lit situations is very important. I sold my 5Dii years ago for this reason. Crazy autofocus comes in handy, but learning a skill, with occasional missed shots, works out better for me. If you will be using your camera all day, how it feels in your hand, with varied lenses, is bigger deal than most will ever acknowledge.
    Also, hoping you will make that BlackMagic video with those 2 awesome BM cameras, Pocket4k and the Micro.. In Reslove 15 & 16, you can upres the footage from the Micro into 4k and it looks better than the Pocket4k footage. Don't get me wrong the Pocket4k is an amazing camera, and I am glad it does so much, especially with BRaw (compressed RAW); everyone needs a dedicated cinema camera, as opposed to a hybrid camera with video. There are quite a few people who prefer the colors from the older sensor of the Micro. Look forward to more, thanks for these videos!

    I agree with color science and how important it is as I often look for the most natural colours when taking photos or videos as I shoot landscapes and wildlife and getting it right when I shoot V-Log L on my GH5 and creating my own LUT and doing corrections to get it exactly how I want it, has been a bit time consuming.
    I never thought about internal memory as I have never used a camera with it, but I can see how it would be a life saver. I was once up a mountain that took me over 3 hours to get to, specifically to shoot photos and videos of the area and one of my 3 SD cards failed and one didn't work well, despite working fine the day before, so I can see how useful it would be to have internal memory and negate issues like that.
    Door that covers the sensor: This is a feature only found in the Canon EOS R, but I don't understand why only that camera has it. I have been saying for years I wanted a feature so the sensor is covered when you take lenses off an ILC camera. This is a big help at reducing the chance of dust and other particles getting onto the camera sensor and I wish every ILC camera had this feature now, not just the EOS R.
    Fully articulating screen: Many people seem to not like this feature but I find it quite useful even if you don't shoot videos, such as having the camera low to the ground or having the camera low to the ground and pointing it straight up for a perspective shot, you couldn't see the screen unless it was articulated.
    Built in flash: For years I had cameras with a built in flash and it wasn't until I got a GH5 which didn't have one, that I realised that in a pinch it is useful. Its not going to be as good as an external flash or lights, but I have been able to use it to take quick photos of a dimly lit small room or insects in low light for record shots when I only had my camera and possibly a few lenses with me.
    Two from the Panasonic GH5:
    Ex. Tele: I shoot video on 4K and being able to have an extra 1.4x crop without any noticeable loss of quality to the image I find quite useful at times, especially taking wildlife videos with my GH5 and having the option of the an extended crop on my Olympus 60mm macro and the Leica 100-400 and with the extra crop, getting a whopping 560mm at the long end (1,120mm full frame equivalent) in 4K video is very useful and something I couldn't easily get on larger sensor cameras, if at all.
    Focus Transitions: Since I began shooting video with my GH4, I always wanted a seamless way of doing focus pulls but I didn't have the money for a rig to do it via remote and don't want to carry something like that around either as I had to carry around my camera, lenses, microphones, tripod etc... myself and didn't have room or want the extra bulk of a focus pull rig and having to set it up.
    With the GH5 having focus transitions that can do that automatically at the precise focus points and speed you choose, when you press the option on the screen, I can do it now easily. The only real issue I had was when using a microphone attached to the camera hot shoe, it picked up the motor noise on the lenses I used when using focus transitions so not that helpful when I needed audio as well as the focus pull.

    Great video, as always! I would add highlights oriented exposure mode to that list. Frankly I expected to see it on your list because I think I matches with your style of shooting street photography 🙂

    Backwards compatibility with older lenses. The Pentax k-mount directly accepts nearly every k-mount lens made since 1975 and with a simple adaptor it can make full use of screw mount lenses as well.

    My favorite underrated feature is high bitrate video. Canon EOS R has 1080p at 180mbps, 4k at 480mbps. Both the best available right now. Love it! The XT3 has that 400mbps 4k 10bit. Everyone always talks about why the GH5, EOSR and XT3 video looks so good, but never talk about bitrate which is why.

    Manual dials please put more iso shutter speed exposition dials they are beautiful, and i find them easier than "normal mode" dials.
    Also i think that the look is quite underrated by some, for exemple the xpro series gives you the will to take it everywhere!

    high iso noise reduction is also pretty underrated; even the old canon rebel cameras can make digital noise look like film grain.
    And iso 25 on digital would be freakin awesome for video

    I'm using an old canon 5d, and the only thing i miss there is the lens micro adjustments. The color science is perfect, resolution is quite enough, highest iso 3200 is enough too. Autofocus is very fast and accurate, esp. with new STM lenses

    I’d like to be able to configure my cameras from a computer or tablet. Menu diving on a tiny rear screen for initial setup or major changes is tedious and would be so much easier on a larger screen. I would be thankful and not the least bit embarrassed if someone would point out that I already have that feature and wasn’t aware of it.

    For me it's film simulations hence why I switched to Fuji although the downside of shooting raw is the film simulations in Lightroom don't look quite the same as the ones in camera. When compared head to head, certain colours are different shades. You said you only shoot raw as well. Do you use the film simulations in Lr when you shoot Fuji pics or the default Adobe Color? If Fuji simulations in Lr, which ones do you like best for street?

      Both yes and no. I definitely liked the image more from the Micro and when setup it was more comfortable to use. But the pocket4k is a more complete system out of the box and that 100fps slowmo is really handy.

    I'd rate ergonomics very high. Just like that display on the top of the camera. I had a Nikon and I sold it and bought an Olympus for the small size, but I regret that decision ever since. Although the Olympus has many features, and is much more compact and light, I ended up buying a grip, because I couldn't stand the alwful handling. Yes, there are two dials you can program any way you want, and are much more grippier, but still I find the rubber grip of the Nikon far superior to that of the Olympus.

    Just having auto ISO is not enough. One should be able to set the longest shutter speed before the camera decides to bump ISO is also crucial. And linking it to the reciprocal to your focal length is even better, a la newer Nikon bodies.

    In-camera charging and FAST USB connection... I don't like taking the battery and card out, especially if I have the camera in a cage.
    The USB port is accessable though.
    Wish more cameras ran the USB port at faster speeds... You wouldn't believe how many are STILL releasing with USB 2.1 speed internal ports 😭

    Thanks for this Video Mattias. For me ergonomics is very important. Guess the Nikon Df would be a nice choice, but i am used to Canon.
    Sometimes I miss a very special feature, the convenient position of the release button in the vintage Praktica LTL analog Cameras. One could hold the Camera in the left hand and push the release button with the left ring finger. So the right hand was always free to handle the film advance lever, for focussing and adjusting aperture and shutter speed. This was realy practical. You could easily handle the camera while looking through the viewfinder. Elegant! commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2016_Porst_Reflex_CX6.JPG

    Much like the previous video on overrated features, I mostly agree. Personally, I would have swapped in low ISO and left out color science. I shoot ISO 50 film all the time and wish it were part of the native range of all cameras. I recognize there’s more to “color science” (or “bias” as it probably should be called) than simply what the camera records to a memory card, so I feel it’s a bit overrated, but if your particular combo of editing software and camera(s) works for you, who am I to argue with that?

  • @karellen00
    @karellen00 5 лет назад

    A thing I never thought of till I had a camera that hasn't is possibility to set aperture, shutter speed, exposure compensation and iso scale at third, half, or full stops! I really hate using thirds of stops, as while they feel very precise a lot of times I feel that 1/3 of a stop is too little, and 2/3 too much. I also like full stops for iso, it may sound stupid but when someone tells me "I took this picture at iso 5000" I have to actively think that it is more than 3200 and a little less than 6400. Add to that the always increasing trend of those numbers and I easily get confused by 10 000, 100 000! Time to start using the full ISO nomenclature (both ASA+DIN) instead of only the ASA value but called ISO which is plain wrong?

    • @karellen00
      @karellen00 5 лет назад

      Oh, and power switch placement! Whenever I try a camera with the switch in a different position than the usual combination with the shutter button I feel like I am using a stone age camera! Especially if you need two hands in order to reach it to make weird movements with the hand! Come on, even in the sixties they got it right! (ok, it was just a lock of the shutter button)

    Can you please explain the concept of native ISO... Also how does it matter in stills. Thank you

    • @karellen00
      @karellen00 5 лет назад +1

      A lot of times you have a native iso range of as an example 200-3200, and an extended range (that you have to enable) of 100-12800. Generally when you use this iso 100 it's not much different than overexposing of one stop at iso 200, and bringing it down in post. What you get is a lower dynamic range, especially in highlights and/or more noise...

    my favourite underrated cam feature is that mode wheel with customer-settings (c1, c2, ... for canon; U1, U2, U3 on your nice GR3) - especially if you often switch from studio or inside photos with external flash (full manual, special WB, viewfinder brightness) to outside shootings where you need a different set of shooting parameters... But in the fuji world, the custom mode does not exist :-( ... add some tears here ...
