The best camera image quality - My Top 5 personal favorites

- This is one of the most hated cameras ever. I couldn’t understand why and after using it Im even more confused. When you get over the specs it doesn’t have and instead look at what it does have, you find a gem. A quick and snappy full frame DSLR with external controls and a lowlight sensor with a very high dynamic range. Whats not to like?

To give you an idea how controversial this camera is I will share a little story.
In a weak moment I wanted to switch to a black version. So I thought I would put mine up for sale with the same asking price as the black one I had spotted. Just to se see if such a switch was possible.
I placed the add on our equivalent to Craigslist.
Within 5 minutes I had received a reply. But it wasn’t an interested buyer. It was a troll. Some dude was trolling a classified just to go on about specs and other meaningless bla bla bla..
Now Im no beginner at classifieds. I must have had hundreds of things for sale. And Ive only once encounter something similar in the past.
That was when I was selling an Apple computer. So Im sure you understand how hot of a topic it is when it reaches the Mac vs PC level of insanity :)

This guy could just run a slideshow of his work, with his choice of music as well and it''s already art most photo people would appreciate. I always come back to this channel whenever I feel like training my photographic eye
I like to imagine that it's truly not about the camera and that you live in some magical place with extremely photogenic people, animals, and flora. Full of dynamic range and lit by perfect rays of sunlight. That's how your videos make me feel.
I was just thinking that. We're seeing everything through the quality of his video camera. Colours from the CCD sensor of the Leica, dynamic range of the Nikon. And in my case watching this on my phone. Lol.
I think it’s a combination of us not living there and seeing it all the time, his skill as a photographer to frame interesting shots, his perseverance to get a good shot, and the weather. You can see a lot of good shots he took when the weather was just right, and he admits to stopping on his way home from work with his wife just to rush out and get a good shot.
I live in the same country and i keep thinking there is nothing to photograph! He's just very good and creative, to me he's the best camera guy on RUclips.
Is it Sweden?
@@noleftturnunstoned yes Sir, or Mam. Mattias lives further south though.
Man you should have your own TV show about cameras 😤
Random Kid yt is the new tv
No one is watching tv anymore
You're watching it :)
andtothewestamerica no?
He could have a show about anything and I would buy it, cameras, watches, smartphones, hell, even kitchenware!
All your photos are brilliant no matter what camera is in your hands!
All wonderful choices. I love that my beloved Foveon was the runner up! 💜 You make some of the best photographic content on RUclips Mattias, and I mean that. Thank you.
By far my favourite RUclipsr. Every video is so refreshing I learn so much about the value of old cameras. I'll never get rid of my Xpro1 because of you. So many love to focus on the new tech predominantly but you really capture the magic of old, the why behind it and the so what. Thank you!
I love the DF, and precisely the quality of the images why I love it so much. They have such depth and pop, and appear very natural, like Portra 400. But you're right, it's all about taste. My aunt was asking me what the best camera for her was yesterday, and I told her the same thing- it's all about what you like. Whatever you like the best is the best. But I like my DF the best. (I also really like images the old 16mp Fujifilm cameras and the images from the Rico GR II and III, and the Nikon D3.)
Totally agree ! I often prefer results of my x-e1 than my xt4 🫢
Brilliant review. Absolutely right: image quality is subjective. Some cameras just have that x-factor, producing pleasing photos in spite of the lab tests. In fact, the opposite is true too: I've had a number of cameras that do extremely well in the lab tests but produce flat, clinical images that underwhelm
Dear Mattias, you can make any camera’s pictures look good. Thanks for this great comparison.
Because of Mattias, now there is sitting Pentax KP by my side and i can't thank you enough. Its really great camera. Thanks Mattias
I'm glad you enjoy it :)
This is why you are one of my favorite RUclipsrs! Well done!
This is such a varied and inclusive comparison! I've never used any of these cameras and now I really want to!
Foveon is my favourite as well. And yes it is taste and not technical specs that is important.
Thank you Mattias, you make me move from my good "old" Pentax K-5 to a brand new Kp, two days ago. Mounted with my vintage SMC Pentax-F 28mm f2.8, it is pure pleasure. But my wife does not thank you as you also convinced me to buy a Ricoh GRIII recently 😱
Your nikon df video is one of my smoke break videos. Your sample photos there are just exceptional. The pentax b&w photos just inexplicably ravishing! Thank you for feeding my daydreams Mattias!
My favourite RUclips channel. Thank you from Canada.
I'm glad you enjoy it :)
I wait for your top 500 so you might mention my canon 450D 🤭

Loved this video. You made a promise (title) and delivered... without mucking things up with specs and other variables. Promised delivered!! (and the French Bulldog photos made it even better... seriously, you have one of the best looking Frenchies around). THANK YOU for all the time and effort you put into these videos. I know it's not easy.
Glad to hear it lived up to expectations :)
another amazing vid dude, thanks so much for your content!
Hey man, you did some amazing art, I can't stop watching them again and again. Now I start to listen them before sleeping 😴.
Lol I wrote on your topic nikon df 😍 so happy that you agreed with me, Df as I wrote has the best sensor ever builted. A film digital sensor with best iso capability and the highest dynamic range in a camera. And the color, wow look like a Kodak film.
So Mattias, you described the image quality of your favourite of the top five in two words. Now I will sum up your reviews, also in just two words:
Refreshing and informative.
Thank you.
Very kind of you :)
The funny thing here is that I’ve always thought the colors from my 5D classic were better than my 70D, M50, and my RP. I bought it used with an ancient 28mm f2.8 (circa 1995) that still works perfectly for about $200 USD. I can’t put my finger on it but straight out of camera the images look more “interesting”. I also have an old point and shoot S100 that has some of the best colors as well. I really enjoy that 5D. Even the jpegs shine ✨
Those two words are synonymous with Nikon for me, too. I have a D600 that I absolutely love because there is just so much information on the sensor. I love the colors, the resolution is terrific, the camera feels really great too. Now that I'm used to them, I'm ok with the controls on it, but in some ways I still like how Canon does things for one-handed control on the 5D II, my former main DSLR. The image quality was great with that too, definitely still a very capable camera, but you need to get the right exposure (exposing to the left) because it clips highlights very easily and shadows aren't perfect either.
Great list, lovely cameras, all of them are worthy of being somebody's only camera, depending on what they like best and what works for them. I would love to try a digital Leica sometime, your M8 review always gets me with those terrific colors and most of all great pictures. Thanks for another excellent vid Mattias!
Finally someone acknowledging the Nikon DF, always getting so much hate. But then again, you're a RUclipsr that actually takes AMAZING pictures, so any camera you use will bring epic results. Thanks for the video, awesome!
As a Nikon Df owner, I absolutely agree! 😄
My favourite images come out of an old and battered Panasonic GF1. Huge amounts of noise in low light, but still, the grain looks aesthetic. The colours are really organic and lovely. Beats my DSLR if you don't pixel peep.
You are such a good photographer, no matter which camera! Love your pictures!
Beautiful photos and great video!!! Thanks for sharing em both!!! :)
I wish Nikon would make a DF 2 as a sort of last hurrah to DSLRs.
How many people would buy it?
@@HoLeeChit11 Not enough, that's why they're not making it.
Rf with df look would be great
Great video!
I like your selection of cameras.
Since there is the Pentax kp, what do you think of the Pentax kp vs k70 or the K3?
Daaaamn!!! I use to have M8 and Df; i think of them everyday. Amazin video, true about the greens on the Sigma.
Wow. Really liked this vid. Some really beautiful pictures. Thank you.
I agree with you bigtime! Dynamic range is sooo important.
Lovely video again!.. That powerful Dynamic Range of DF is gold!
Holy Wow. Im jumping at 1245am. Im so happy. #1 surprised me but now im even more glad I picked one up. My only thing is fighting between it and my D700 at shows. I do carry both now.
Fully concur Mattias! Good choice and order.
In your hands everything is a good choice. Because of your M8 videos I bought it and it pleased me with the results straight out of camera. I let it go for the m240 since I have many other lenses which are easy to use on the m240. But I have to say the m8 is a true legend. Maybe one day Leica will produce a CCD camera again. Thank you for the great content.
Classic legendary gear each with their own merit. But it's the man behind the viewfinder with hands on the shutter release button that calls the shots. Amazing photography and thanks for sharing.
For me it's B&W film and Mattias approved it last time I asked :) Whatever sensor and profile and printing method, cannot beat a traditionally printed B&W image, it's simply stunning. I love my Fomapan 400 but really, whatever film can beat sensors any day IMO.
Thanks to you Mattias, I bought a second hand Df. Only wish I had bought one earlier! The images are gorgeous.
After doing wedding & sports photography for about 25 years on film (Hasselblad for wedding & Nikon F1 and F4 for sports) and then changing professions and getting back into digital photography 15 years later as a hobby by chance came across a used Nikon DF in a camera shop. The sales pitch on purchasing the DF was that I could use all my old Nikon mount lenses on the DF and of course they all work. What a camera! All the dials are in the same place as the old film F1 and pretty much the F4 film cameras. I’ve seen a lot of negative reviews on the DF and don’t understand what the issue is. I guess I am not biased by using more menu driven cameras and shot manual for the most part for so long that I don’t know the difference. The dynamic range on the DF is incredible in jpg. The DF is very intuitive to me meaning that the analog dials are all in the right place. I have learned to navigate the menus over time. The only complaint I have with the DF is that it does not have a split image rangefinder screen to assist with low light focusing while using manual lenses. I have since purchased 3 Nikon auto focus lenses that have helped me with this extensively by circumventing the use of the focusing screen. So as the author stated your camera choice is purely subjective. The DF works for me because of the smooth almost seamless transition from film to digital. No more bulk loading film such as Ilford XP-1 into 35 mm cassettes pre shoot and then processing in a dark room post shoot. Literally hours cut out of production by going digital and doing all on my desk top. I can even bracket my exposures in digital and not have the expense of using so much film to do so. The DF is a perfect fit for me and how I shoot and understand photography.
Mr. Burlington thank you for a wonderful video!
Matias, I love your presentation. The curiosity that you build. Wow! ... One question: do you think D750 and DF are comparable with image quality?
Thank you for another interesting video. I really enjoy your videos and your thoughts about cameras and photography!
Glad you enjoy them!
@Mattias...saw that you chose the Pentax KP over the K1. Where would you place the K1? Trying to decide between the two.
I've been hovering over buying a DF for months. Can't really justify it but this has edged me a little closer.
Peter Yates I bought used as I felt the new price was to high. After using it I realised it’s worth the retail asking price.
I have many cameras and I still think the DF is special. Definitely worth buying at current used prices
There are some amazingly beautiful shots in this video.
Thanks for the advice Mathias!
Since watching this video, I have picked up a Nikon Df and Leica M8.2...thanks a lot, Mattias :) What lens do you like to use on the M8?
i love your video as always!
Great video as always!
Of all your videos, this has the most surprises for me.
On one hand, I didn’t expect to see the 6D MK II in here because of its inferior sensor; sarcasm aside, the 6D + 135mm f2 work like a dream.
And on the other hand, I kind of hoped to see a Fuji in the mix.
Anyways, seems that most of us underestimated the DF, I hope prices don’t go up on eBay after this 😉
Great video, really scratched an itch! Loved the ice cream comment - I will be using that often!
Beautiful photos across the board, never really considered the DF but I can certainly see why you love it.
For me the original Fuji X100 was the camera I owned that produced my favourite images.
Why the X100 over the S or T? I'm genuinely curious, because I really love the X-trans II with the 27mm tone and colour rendering.
@@-grey The original X100 didn't have an X-trans sensor. It was a CMOS bayer type.
I've since moved onto various more modern Fuji bodies and lenses and all are amazing, but that X100 had something special about it and when I look back on the photos I took with it I always really like the look of them.
@@walliswizard is the X-A Bayer line an equivalent to the original X100? Because I have thought about trying one of those out for a while.
@@-grey I don't know I'm afraid, sorry.
I bought a used Df last year - partly after one of your review videos.
It produces amazing results, and yes it has foibles in how you use it - but the images are the best I have ever seen in a camera. Nuff said.
Out of curiosity
I am thinking of getting either a Nikon 20mm 2.8D lens, or the 24 mm 2.8D for my Df
Cannot decide which is better.
Any viewers on here have a view? or experience of the lenses?
Mattias, could you make some suggestions as to what camera /lens combo I should go for. I need the smallest possible portrait camera with a 35mm equiv between 50mm and 85mm..
As soon as you mentioned the CCD I thought YES! There was something about the colours and feel of CCD images. I don't know what it is, but it is a thing. I miss the colour and feel of my first DSLR.
Another great video!
They definitely have a richer color that gets lost on high mp cmos.
High megapixel sensors have weak color filter and they are not able to capture really deep saturated colors, that's why :(
What other CCD sensor interchangeable lens cameras are out there worth exploring?
Man I enjoyed this video so much
Not sure if it's your voice or what you say, perhaps both. But I can listen to you all day. Thanks for sharing another amazingly fun and informative video.
When said "high dynamic range" i shout Df 😀
I have a 6d mki and have always loved the photos I get with it. Also recently acquired an M8 which I am also loving the look of.
I agree with the Df, never sold it because of its sensor, something special I love my GFX and xt systems but that Df, damn, had the shutter replaced after 250k clic and I keep it ! (Well I could exchange it for the black version I have to admit..)
You prefer the DF images over the gfx ones?
So do would people take the 6Dii over a 5D (of any generation)? Is the image different from the 6Dii and the 5D?
as always, thank you for the effort and the sharing. your insights and enthusiasm seep into your vids and add to the conversation. i am a very appreciative subscriber. thumbs up.
Hi. I bought a df after watching your review. I love the colours, and love using the dials.
hi mattias, have u tried nikon 58 1.4g with df..? its a dream combo.
Terrific video. Thanks for making it.
It'really a difficult choice...
I love the B&W from my Monochrom and XP1...
I love the files from theOlympus OM 1 mark I out of the box...
I can't say anything but aaah...! when viewing the files from my GFX S...
... and I do not manage to like files from my Eos mark I....
I have a KP. Love it.
It's an awesome camera!
Totally agree on the Df placement. The IQ out of that camera is sublime imo.
Very interesting photos and opinion .
Hey!.. so I guess the Nikon d750 did not stack up?... how do you find printing with 16 mp?... I like the DF, but I am nervous about lower mp cameras, even though I shoot with two d700's! I always feel like I am not equipped. Help!
Curious I might add. I'm pretty new to photography all in all but I've had the discussion about dynamic range from time to time with different people and exclusively I have gotten the answer "it's not as important as you think".
Sure, there are tons of other features that makes a good camera but I gotta say, those times I need to push the files close to abusing them, I wouldn't trade that DR for any other gimmick in the world.
Sprinkle that with some lovely colors and decent sharpness and you can't go wrong.
Beautiful!
What settings do you use for Pentax JPEGs??
Love this channel's philosophy: gear doesn't matter. Very good insight as I gunning for my first digital camera and having come from an ancient Ricoh FF-70. (I won't mention the 1000s of shots taken with the computational photography that smartphones provide) 😁
Great video.
Great narration and great music. The transition to the M8 was really great!
Man, now I am jonesing for a Df. My father gave me his nikkor ais 50mm f1.2 and 35mm 1.4 recently.
I've been adapting them to my fuji xe3, but I've been wondering about shooting them natively on my old N90s slr, but that would require me shooting film and I am not sure about going down that rabbit whole. The Df, well that would be fun, but that would also mean $$$$... :P
Go Df you won’t regret!
What about the legendary Fujifilm S5 Pro? Have you ever used it? For me, this produces the best Film Like images. I would claim it's better than the Leica M8. Would be great Matthias if you could give us your thoughts?
Were you processed all of these pictures in RAW format?
Favorite music out of all your videos!
The Df has been an interesting polarising camera, and 1 i am interested in owing 1 day after im over my Fuji xt1 and sony A7III .. again a wonderful short film to watch over and over again thanks for the great work.
I love my XT1 until I use my 18mm and the performance is sub par. The D700 I enjoy quite a bit.
what lenses you use for your df?
The 6DMK2 is an absolute beast. The Canon color science really is awesome especially with this camera. The photos look warm, crisp and punchy. I love my 6DMK2. I has an EOS R but the 6DMK2 is always in my bag.
Satisfying video! You really make me want to try out that Leica M8 now! Haha. I did a quick search to see how much they go for and WOW. Seems like they routinely sell for $1,200-$1,300 (USD) on eBay. Seems like a no brainer if someone has always lusted after a Leica, but can't afford the "new" ones. I've always heard great things about that sensor in the Nikon Df. Very cool list and kind of surprised the Canon 5D classic didn't make the cut given how everyone raves about it (I shot on it for a short time as well).
I really like first Canon 5d for it's large matrix, color science and very affordable price
Yes… The images from that camera were magical
Love this video.... and not just because I use the Nikon Df. I’m thinking of buying a medium format camera now, though, and Leica S (006) in particular, which is now available at a “reasonable” price. My question is this: can I expect the same or similar image quality from the Leica S 006 as from the lovely image quality from the M8, given that both use a CCD sensor? Have you had the opportunity to compare the image quality of these two Leica’s to one another? Cheers.
I cried when I saw The DF 😍
Opinions on the Nikon d300? Recent got one really cheap.
Can't argue with that top 3 :)
Love the comparison with ice cream flavors. I would love to see a review of imagae quality for point and shoot cameras. Thank you for your excellent videos!
Interesting list , Mattias. I predicted there'd be a sigma in there somewhere. I also thought a Pentax but the K1 rather than KP.
Excellent video
Yay en bild tagen i Malmö! Bra video, bra kanal.

Camera's I have owned over the years:
- Nikon D5100
- Nikon D7200
- Nikon D700
- Nikon D810
- Panasonic LX100
- Panasonic GH4
- Fujifilm X-Pro
- Fujifilm X-T2
- Sony A7
- Canon 5D MKII
The best images came from the D700 and X-Pro and in particular the combination of the glass used for them, with the D700 it was the 105mm F2 DC and the X-Pro it's the 56mm F1.2 APD.
The sensor is the most important part of the images, no amount of resolution and auto focus can or ever will change the quality of glass and the characteristics of a sensor.
The X-T2 and the D810 are better camera's but for some reason lose the magic of and feel of the images shot with the D700 and the X-Pro... If I could some how get all the benefits of the modern camera's and features with those SAME sensor's. One can dream.
Was looking towards the Nikon Z6 as a walk around camera but didn’t like some of the reviews and the fact that I’d have to use the adaptor or purchase new expensive lenses. Stumbled upon a MINT Nikon DF ...6600 clicks and two old nikkor lenses for just under a thousand bucks! Added a 24-85mm, the nikkor 55 f1.2 and the 135 f2.8 ...all for about 500$. LOVE that old D4 sensor look and coupled with the classic nikkor lenses you can’t beat the image quality! The DK-17m magnifying eyepiece helps with manual focusing. I’m in LOVE with photography again!
What lens were you using with the DF? I had the camera about 3 years ago and sold it and am now reconsidering buying it again, There are a lot out there for a reasonable price. I remember it took some of my favorite images too. I had the M8 also and colors were so vibrant and interesting. Thanks Bob
Mostly the 50 and 85 f1.8.
Haven't commented on your content in a bit. Just wanted to show some love and respect to you and your channel. I don't always agree (yes there's a ton of EF glass but the mount has only been around since the late 80s. The F mount since the 50s. Lol!!) But you are seriously the only photography channel I am aware of that would not only include a 6DMKII, and gasp Pentax in your top 5 but the venerable Nikon DF?? The dynamic range was and is indeed stunning and although you're a hundred percent right that image quality is mostly subjective the quality of the images you used to back up your picks is undeniable. Cheers and keep up the excellent content!
Love your photo
All your videos are relaxing and the images are genius. I do own a KP but can’t compare the image quality to the k1 which you also reviewed. Where would you rate the k1. Ergonomics are way better and dynamic range is superb. Would love to try the DF but where I live they want 2600 usd. Cheers and keep those videos coming. Love them.
