Those Foveon sensors are truly unique. I have the DP3 Merrill 50mm and it gives this "medium format" kind of special look and feel to the images. It's SO slow to operate and has terrible noise on anything above ISO 100. Max 50 shots to a battery. It's almost painful to edit images in Sigmas proprietary software. Simply the worst camera that I just LOVE...
CHRISTOPH Altenburger I think it is one of the few camera systems that has held it's value on eBay year after year.. And for good reason :) I would love to have both the dp1m and my dp3m!
I sold my DP2S on Fred Miranda for $50 a few weeks ago, and it was up for a few weeks before that. To those who comment that you can't find these cameras at the price he bought his for, it takes some patience and looking around. Few of these cameras were built, compared to Canon and Nikon. One should also consider the Merrills, like the DP2M. That would probably be closer to $500 but you get more resolution.
@@precociousmonkeyproductions These seems a lifetime ago. I'm sue you're right! Also, electronics don't age well. So I'd be nervous to buy stuff getting that old!
Hi Mattias, cool video as always, just a short question...why all the photo examples are presented in a smaller frame? is it because the resolution would suffer on "full screen" just curious...cheers
Super video. I had DP1 which stopped working. Since then I have mainly used Nikon. However you have peaked my interest and will search out a new one. I do congratulate you on looking at old cameras and their merits, thus lowering the entry level for this wonderful interest. I own one and still prefer the image quality coming from this sensor. You have to be aware that by this time, the flex cable for the shutter should be brittle or weak and will need replacement. Haven't replaced mine yet though plenty of flex cables are available.
Great video, Mattias! I have a DP1 and a DP2Merrill. The DP1 is magical - small size, and the image quality is ... special and yes, magical. My favorite camera ever! BUT - I've had it repaired once before for a common and known problem (with the SD1 and SD2 with retractable lens) - there is apparently a flexible piece of plastic inside as part of the retractable mechanism, and that is what breaks, locks the lens out and then won't let you use it. It would be fine if it would let you still take photos but not be able to retract the lens ... but alas, no. I just contacted Sigma in the US, and Fred Langstaff, the Customer Service Supervisor for Sigma Corporation of America, said: "Thank you for contacting Sigma USA. The DP-1 is beyond its service life and can no longer be repaired. The DP-1Merrill has been discontinued for 4 years and will be beyond its service life in 3 years. We do not have stock in new or refurbished DP-1 Merrill’s and we will not be getting any more in." The weak link breaks the entire chain ... and so you have to junk the whole camera and the several batteries and accessories. A real shame, more so because the camera is so special. But even if it was able to be fixed, it WOULD happen again. That was a bad design. Bad for Sigma to not recognize it as a design fault and provide a more permanent fix - but this highlights, once again, that these companies are in business to sell new cameras. So I do have a DP2 Merrill, and it does NOT have the retractable lens, and feels much more solid. But again, in several years it will no longer be able to be repaired. And frankly, the 45mm-equivalent lens, sharp as it is, is not nearly as charismatic as the 28mm-equivalent of the DP1 series - it works well, but is not as fun to shoot. I am sold on the Foveon processor. I'm not sure I like what Sigma has done with the latest sensor to make it faster, but the results still seem to be there, from what I've read and seen. So I'm thinking I'll go for an SD Quattro with 19mm and 60mm lenses. A big, heavy camera, but less expensive than a DP1 Quattro and DP3 Quattro, and more flexible - and current enough to be able to be repaired into the foreseeable future. Thank you for your videos - very much appreciated! -Tom

Finally I have it … and it is a pleasure to use it especially in New Caledonia where the sun shines every day … I can put iso 50 an leave the camera at f/2.8 😊 … I love the Colors from this sensor (I have Fuji, the ricoh, Nikon, Canon, Lumix cameras)
Found one for a good affordable price, this video make me contemplate on whether to get one for myself. You are very convincing with those sample image.
! ! I have DP3 Merrill which is the 75mm equivalent version with a macro function. I’m locked down away from it at the moment, but this camera takes awesome images. There’s a guy posting on Sigma Merrill Flickr groups that has B&W Macros of flowers that can compete with Leica Monochrome all for $400. There are big limitations: must shoot at low ISO, and a tripod is close to mandatory, with ridiculous slow processing speeds. BUT Foveon sensor is miraculous. It’s certainly less of a PITA than large format cut film, and in good light the results will boggle.
Enjoyed that review Mattias. For me it was more seeing others enjoying the film like foveon IQ over an actual camera review. As a DP1M DP2M user Im eagerly awaiting your SD Quattro review. I find screen composing with these cameras increasingly difficult due to now requiring spectacles for close seeing. I am interested in the SD Quattro for its EVF, though the camera and lens bulk looks to be too big for my lightweight ethos. Health.
I actually really like this camera aesthetically, I wish the DP2 Merrill cameras followed this design. Hoping Sigma comes through with an fp with a foveon sensor that can record Cinema DNG....that would be incredible.
How does it compare to DP2 Merril and SD Quattro? Given there isn't much difference in price I can't make up my mind. I heard the sd quattro has a more bayer sensor type look. Which one has the best colors?
Great contents Matthias. I am thinking of getting a DP2, do you think the Merrill version is worth the additional money, currently I can purchase the foveon version for around USD170 and the Merrill version for USD385. Do you think it is worth to pay the additional money for the M version? Many thanks in advance.
that's strange, I was subscribed, then saw this video and thought "why didn't I get notified?" and it shows that I was not subscribed... Have you had any issues with subscribers getting auto-unsubscribed?
Having picked up a DP2s, I'll say I wish I had got a DP1 instead. With the small screen and no focus peaking, I feel like it's a lot harder to get the most out of one of the coolest features of the DP# series: the manual focus wheel. There's enough of a difference between a 24.2mm and 16.6mm lens to make focusing more challenging. Case in point: to get a reasonable hyperfocal distance, it requires a lot more stopping down. For about a 3-meter distance, it'll take stopping my DP2s down to f/11, while a DP1 would be fine at f/4. That's a lot of light for a camera that doesn't really want to raise the ISO. Two other minor quibbles: First, it would be a lot easier to get an external viewfinder for the 28mm field of view of a DP 1 for exceedingly sunny days where the screen is harder to see. Second, the DP1 is a bit smaller, so should be a bit easier to fit into a pocket. Even retracted, the DP2 lens sticks out kind of a lot for a camera of it's size. If the point is to get a camera with these lovely Sigma colors, without caring much about the specs and features, I think the DP1 would have been a bit more convenient to use.
Luke, I have all three of the DP Merrills and although they have a different manual focusing mechanism, (just the lens body, no wheel), they're not the easiest to work with. I use them 90% of the time on a small tripod with the cameras hooked into a 7" field monitor where I can get focus magnification and focus peaking. Not exactly portable or discreet but easy to use and really extends the functionality of the camera years nearly 10 years later.
I had the dp1 and replaced it with a dp1 merrill. I tried to 'repair' my original dp1 after the lens deployment mechanism started to sound even worse. I don't know how they assemble the camera in the plant but it had 5 pounds of stuff crammed into a 1 pound box. It never worked again. I think my merrill has an even longer delay between shots than the original, probably because it needs to write a 46 M pixel for each 15 M pixel image to the card.
Just got my DP2m in! it is quirky to say the least, I bought one of those on the back LCD viewfinders. Autofocus is slow, write speed... slow, sigma photo pro is awkward to say te least. But man oh man, those photos! It really reminds me of shooting film. You have to be patient with it. Worthwhile investment.
A fellow commenting on this video sold his for $50. I passed on one for $85 last week and $150 as I was uploading this video. The deals are out there, but you wont find them on a quick random search. Good deals don't sit and whait, they sell.
Thank you for making such wonderful videos! You always have great photos to go with your reviews. I had a dp1 but the reds were terrible. I had to underexposed most of the time to compensate. Even then I had to convert it to black and white to make it acceptable. Are you experiencing the same thing with your dp1 or dp2? They are still asking about $200 in US for them.
Mattias, I am sure that you are aware of your salesman's qualities. Just about everyone, incl. me, brings it up here. You hooked me on the Samsung NX1, no regrets!, and now the foveon cams. Just 1 question: do you know by any chance if the DNG RAW files support, firmware update 1.04 - is applicable only to the Quattro line, or is it to the SD1 (Merrill) as well?
Hey, Its only the Quattro line that shoots DNGs. The older DP1, DP1s and DP2 (pre Merrill) don't shoot DNG but their files are natively supported by Lightroom.
I have tried sigma dp1x, dp1m, they were both great cameras, image quality wise. However, the post-processing was such a hassle due to the special files Foveon sensor produced. By far the Foveon sensors produce the image closest to the traditional analog feeling, and the color is just great. Also, one battery probably will last you like 80 photos in real life, and I used to carry 6-8 batteries with me just in case it runs out of juice...
Ben Hanggai That's why I prefer the DP1, DP2 and Quattros. They let you edit the raw files in Lightroom just like any other camera and the battery lasts a long time.
No matter which camera I have, I've owned Nikon D3100, Sony A900, Canon EOS 100, Canon 1Ds, Nikon D600 and Nikon D5300, my pictures suck. Not everyone has your eyes, Mattias! 😁
Those dng files on the quattro do not give you the full latitude x3f files give you. You are still better of opening up spp doing your first edits there after which you export them in 16bit tiff files.
it is there, it is not that noticeable due to the very noisy output of the quattro line. I'm really happy with SFD mode since that fixes the most of the noise issues (but introduces ghosts.)
Ive tried all kinds of exposure. With noise and with no noise what so ever. There simply isn't any difference. But lets say there was. And as you say, barley noticeable. Then I definitely don't see any point in using SPP and converting to TIFF with all the flexibility that you loose :)
The images are pretty much straight from camera. Just some contrast added. The purpose of a photo editor is to be able to adjust the image. Just like you do in a dark room. There are many ways to get an image and lots of parameters to affect. Some are made outside the camera, some inside the camera and some in post (Darkroom/Lightroom). That is how photography always have been and always will.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter last year completed listing on ebay worldwide was around $200-300, These are very special and rare cameras so no surprise really. Atleast some people got them very cheap thanks to you, so don't ever feel bad for trying to help us.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge in possibly most beautiful way. You got me very interested in getting one of these and while searching I found out that there is a newer DP2 Merrill, what do you think about it?It lacks the manual focus dial which was one of the biggest reason I got interested in DP2 in the first place. Thank you in advance!
Hi, I realise this video is a few years old now but wondered if you could tell me which version of Lightroom open the X3F Raw files from the DP cameras? I've had no luck. Thanks!
Depends on how serious you are with photography. You can always take nice pictures with a smartphone. But there are things a large sensor gives you that a smartphone can't.
How're you finding such cheap offerings, Mattias? Your video made me realize I need a digital camera (having sold my gh4 and shooting only on film at the moment).
The video looks like a home movie shot on 8mm in the 1960s or 70s. If you blow out the highlights a bit more, and underexpose indoor footage, that would make it even more believable.
I had one, was awesome, until the focusing mechanism fell apart. I tried to put it back together and it kept unscrewing itself. I think I eventually ripped a flex cable inside.
This camera looks like an absolutely fantastic fit for me, but I can't find them anywhere for a reasonable price. I'm trying to evolve my photography, have been taking pictures with my phone for a couple years now and have been able to get some decent results out of it, but I want to make a move to a more manual approach, but I can't find the DP2, or any foveon sensor camera for that matter, for anywhere near this price. The lowest I've found them is €150, which is unattainable by me and seems too much.
A fellow commenting on this video sold his for $50. I passed on one for $85 last week and $150 as I was uploading this video. The deals are out there, but you wont find them on a quick random search. Good deals don't sit and whait, they sell. I might put mine on ebay, starting bid will be $1.

@@gearreallydoesntmatter I have no expectation about the camera but it blow me away. Photos from my A7r3 require a lot of post editing but I can use photos straight from the sigma camera (auto convert from raw files). But the camera is not for beginners. I feels like shoot film again.
Hi mattias, i live and work in dubai u.a.e. I've been watching your reviews and i love it, unfortunately good cheap camera for me is 500 to 800 dirhams only that's all i can afford. Where can i buy such cameras?
@@gearreallydoesntmatter Interesting! In my opinion the "sigma Dpness" of the series decreases with time (each generation is less foveon like and more of a normal camera in terms of color rendering). The merrils are the sweet spot for me, still retaining this special look but way more useable than the original DPs. Thanks for your reviews!

A used x100s or t isnt going for much. Ask him what it was he liked about the f. Because if it for example was the AF speed then he should look elsewhere. Even though the GR is faster with snap.

No I can't say that I've experienced the red issue. What editor where you using?
Mattias Burling Adobe Lightroom.
Did you do anything to the footage you shot on the camera in post? I honestly loved the look of it
You mean the video? No, didn't touch it.
Mattias Burling Yes I did mean that, I wasn't sure how to phrase it haha. Thanks!
That's cool that they have 2 different focal lengths. It's like Sigma wants you to use both as opposed to one completely phasing out the other.
On the Merril line there are three and Quattro have four different focal lengts.
Fuji only two and Ricoh one. I like options :)
The older DP1, DP1s and DP2 (pre Merrill) don't shoot DNG but their files are natively supported by Lightroom.
thanks for the quick answer, Mattias. Waiting for the SD1 Merrill to arrive, have great expectations to do Macro work with it
Where are you guys finding this camera for $50 or less? I haven't seen it listed below $300 on ebay.
😁
The DP2 uses the same battery as the Ricoh GR digital. The Ricoh doesn't come with a wall charger but the Sigma does.
The DP2 doesn't. The DP2 Merrill does.
Those dng files on the quattro do not give you the full latitude x3f files give you.
You are still better of opening up spp doing your first edits there after which you export them in 16bit tiff files.
I have heard that before. But when comparing I see no evidence supporting it.
it is there, it is not that noticeable due to the very noisy output of the quattro line.
This pictures are straight from the camera or you edit them? And whats the prupos of having good colors if lightroom destroy them on post?
The images are pretty much straight from camera. Just some contrast added.
The purpose of a photo editor is to be able to adjust the image. Just like you do in a dark room.
There are many ways to get an image and lots of parameters to affect. Some are made outside the camera, some inside the camera and some in post (Darkroom/Lightroom).
That is how photography always have been and always will.
does it have clean hdmi out. and can it be powered by USB?
+Zatoichiable I suspecst no.
Well, plenty on US Ebay. Not sure if the prices were lower in 2017, but now it's from $250 up. Far from cheap - maybe thanks to this video :)
Prices are still the same. For those that look :)
@@gearreallydoesntmatter I just looked on Ebay, cheapest one is $220. Last year a few sold from $180-$400. At least, this is on Ebay..
@@Peppermint1 No it isnt, use "best offer".
@@gearreallydoesntmatter last year completed listing on ebay worldwide was around $200-300, These are very special and rare cameras so no surprise really. Atleast some people got them very cheap thanks to you, so don't ever feel bad for trying to help us.
I've got the SD Quattro for a few days... interesting thing!!!
Cool. Im shooting with it as we speak. Very cool indeed. Will make my review soon :)
I'm just waiting for the RAWs to finish converting to Tiffs, couldn't be bothered messing too much with SPP as it annoyed me not installing a few times. I'll hopefully send people your way for the fuller review!
I simply shoot DNGs so I can open them in any editor. Some say the DNGs loose quality. But at least my tests doesn't show that.
I missed that setting grr.. I'll check it now
It came in a firmware update for bots SD and all the DP Quattros, so maybe your copy didn't have it.
I don't like that its raw files cant be edited in Lightroom. That's why I prefer the DP classics or DP Quattros.
Ah that's bummer. I didn't know that only non-Merrill files could reprocessed in lightroom. Thank you for your reply!
You can always download Sigma Photo Pro. Its a free editor that can handle Merrill raw files.
Some get along with it, others hate it.
At the end, I found DP 2s relatively good price on ebay and ordered it.;) looking forward!
Mattias, will you ever make a video of how you edit your images?
I will since many have asked. Its just that its so boring :)
Hi, I realise this video is a few years old now but wondered if you could tell me which version of Lightroom open the X3F Raw files from the DP cameras? I've had no luck. Thanks!
Which model of DP do you have?
@@gearreallydoesntmatter I have the DP3
Since they never made a DP3 I'm guessing you have either the DP3 Merrill or Quattro?
@@gearreallydoesntmatter yes DP3 Merrill
Ahh, No that's not compatible. Only the DP1, DP2 and DP 1/2/3 Quattro.
honest question, this camera or the camera on my smart phone, pixel xl, IP 7 or sg8 ?
Depends on how serious you are with photography. You can always take nice pictures with a smartphone. But there are things a large sensor gives you that a smartphone can't.
I wonder why they stripped video from the dp quattro's
How're you finding such cheap offerings, Mattias? Your video made me realize I need a digital camera (having sold my gh4 and shooting only on film at the moment).
I look all the time. Every single time I go to the john, check my messages or stand in line at the store. Where talking 20 times a day :)
Haha, looks like hard work and dedication pays off! While there looks to be a lot of the Merrill versions around, the DP2/s are quite hard to find!
The video looks like a home movie shot on 8mm in the 1960s or 70s. If you blow out the highlights a bit more, and underexpose indoor footage, that would make it even more believable.
I have a feeling that your videos are raising the prices on eBay
The colors definitely were very nice
loved mine. got it for 50€. outstanding quality. unusable over base iso.
Yeah, the dp1 can go a little higher imo, luckily you have the f2.8.
Good price!
I have to stop watching your vids keeps making me go search ebay :(
Nice review!
I found on eBay today still mint, and hard to bid with low price
I had one, was awesome, until the focusing mechanism fell apart. I tried to put it back together and it kept unscrewing itself. I think I eventually ripped a flex cable inside.
That sucks.
I might put mine on ebay, starting bid will be $1.
would you recommend this over the ricoh gr ii?
Amir Hakim They are a bit to different. For starters the difference in focal length is quite substantial.
Mattias Burling and is the merrill dp2 significantly better?
Yes, but it has no manual focus wheel and cant shoot DNG. So you must use Sigma Photo Pro fro raw.
Mattias Burling thanks mattias, you're the best!
"Old cameras that weren't exactly big-sellers from the beginning are even cheaper."
Oh yeah, I'm biding my time for the Fujifilm X-H1 to drop its price every month xD
Hi Mattias, I like the price of this camera. Could you make a video on how to find the sweet sweet deals on ebay? After watching your DP1 video i followed a ebay search for it. But there are no listings near the price you paid for it. What is your method of finding these listings?
I've been planing such a video for ages. Just never seem to get around to it.
Mattias Burling please make one! you would make this viewer very very happy 😊
i just bought it $130, it amazing (i have a7r3,a7s and couple zeiss lenes)
Good deal.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter I have no expectation about the camera but it blow me away. Photos from my A7r3 require a lot of post editing but I can use photos straight from the sigma camera (auto convert from raw files). But the camera is not for beginners. I feels like shoot film again.
I just bought a DP2 for about $200 today
whats the battery economy like ?
Decent.
every sigma dp is bought of from ebay because of him XD
The nikon d3 is amazing
DP2x is my best partner now.
Hi mattias, i live and work in dubai u.a.e. I've been watching your reviews and i love it, unfortunately good cheap camera for me is 500 to 800 dirhams only that's all i can afford. Where can i buy such cameras?
Ebay has it all.
Mattias! I can’t find any DP2 or DP1 for cheap can you look up for me the cheapest?
Sorry, then everyone would want me to. I saw a DP1 for $50 on eBay last week. So they are still out there, one just have to spend the time.
I've nether heard of a compact camera with a prime lens before
Ok, there are plenty of them. Fuji x100 series, Ricoh GR, Leica X, Nikon Coolpix, and many more :)
2:23 Måste säga att det är en väldigt fin flagga där! ;)
Have you tried the merrils yet?
Yes, many times. Prefer the classics and Quattros.
Your dog ssssssuuuuurrrrrreeeee love sticks lol.
She does!
Did we just see Gunpowder with a playmate? :D
Yup, its her neighbour and best bud.
That's awesome!
so film like!! amazing!
Bro, minimum prices on eBay are $150+, where do you see them for < $100?
John Gagliardi on ebay.
Mattias Burling lol thanks, keep making awesome videos 🔳📣🗞
Damn, these are $300+ in the states..
dp2 or ricoh gr2? :O
Both, very different. Even in focal length.
Mattias Burling my friend just wants a "first and last" everyday camera. He doesn't really have any preference focal length wise since it will be he first that he owns. He wanted a camera after using my x100f but doesn't want to spend as much
A used x100s or t isnt going for much. Ask him what it was he liked about the f. Because if it for example was the AF speed then he should look elsewhere. Even though the GR is faster with snap.
Mattias Burling he just liked it because of size and aesthetics as he doesn't know that much about cameras hahaha. Do you use the dp2s or dp2m? Does the dp2s have enough resolution to print decent sized photos? :o
I have the dp2. All of them can print ok photos.
Wonder if this video is the reason these are $300+ on ebay in 2020.
They aren't that expensive. Check yesterdays comment. You can't just do a quick eBay search. You need to work on it a little.
Wow 3 years passed and still proces are 200+ $ after this video lol
Nah, I can still find them for less.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter i guess it needs some patience!
from the day this video was published i check on ebay none of the model comes under $150,may be the rush for those made the price
They still show up cheap from time to time.
Not affordable anymore. €300 DP1, €500 for old gen dp2 and the SD is around €900. That's the problem with quality RUclipsrs recommendations...
€300 is still very affordable, and you can hunt one down for a little less. Things are usually not for free in life.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter Absolutely! And if sells for that now, it's because it's a great camera.
Greetings sir
I am a big big fan of your youtube channel. i really liked that sigma dp1 video. i have watched it many time.
I liked street photography very much but my nikon d7000 with 18-140 lens is not vwry good candidate. I have searched on ebay india website( i am from india) and ebay international website but haven't found a great deal on any good compact-premium camera. and many of them do not ship to india 😞 and i dont have the budget to buy a new one.
Sir, Can you help me out? i really want to buy these street friendly cameras 🙏🏻
