Your videos made me buy a Leica M8. I found a great deal on Craigslist and i couldn't be happier! I used to shoot with a Sony a6000. Great camera, but the photography made me feel...empty after a while. I can't recommend the M8 enough! Thank you for your videos!
I love your analogy of choosing a favorite camera to that of choosing a favorite movie. It really is hard. And changes. I shoot with the D500 and think of it as a "moments beast". If I don't come back with moments after shooting a scene with the D500 then it was my own damn fault, not the camera's.

I prefer manual/mechanical cameras to automatic/electronic cameras. My personal favorite manual/mechanical camera is the Nikon F2 35mm film camera. I own three of them. My F2 lens inventory consists of two-dozen prime lenses that range in focal length from 14mm to 1000mm. I also use six zoom lenses as backups to my prime lenses. My personal favorite automatic/electronic camera is a Fuji X-Pro2 digital mirrorless. I primarily use the following primes on my Fuji X-Pro1 and X-Pro2 APS-C cameras: 16mm f/1.4 Fujinon 23mm f/1.4 Fujinon 56mm f/1.2 Fujinon 12mm f/2 Rokinon 135mm f/2 Zeiss (adapted) I also use the following lenses as backups: 16-55mm f/2.8 Fujinon 50-140mm f/2.8 Fujinon 23mm f/2 Fujinon 12mm f/2.8 Zeiss
I remembering upgrading my 5n to a used a7, which I got for $600 usd. I worked my first paying gigs with it, and it captured my most loved photos. I now have an a7iii and Leica M240, and love them both. But, I don't think I'll ever feel the same magic I had with the original a7.
You echoed my thoughts exactly. I've always thought that the best camera is the one you have in your hand. I have a lot of different cameras and each one is unique. In fact, they all do certain things well and certain things not so well and they pretty much dictate what you're going to do differently that day when you pick one up to use. Each one has a different personality and it's good to make friends with all of them

A bit surprised (positively) that you added the A7. They can indeed be had for good prices on the second hand market. I got my A7S a couple of months ago for 880€. If I had to pick one from your list (not counting unaffordable M8 ;-) it would be the Ricoh GRii as I really like those colours.

Great video. I love my GRII - it is the essence of pure photographic joy. It has quickly become my go-to camera for most situations. Only a GRIII could surpass it!
The dslr images were not my favorite but they definitely stood out as the ones the the greatest quality. Gosh, if only the Leica M one was not so unforgivably expensive relative to my budget...or lack thereof. LOL. I'm just so in love with how matching the sexiness of it's output and it's physical aesthetics are. Ricoh GRii is somewhat attainable but it does not seem to have much presence in my country. A7 is still too expensive for me so I guess I'm going with Fuji...

I do have the gxr q and a few other my top 5 leica m8 just makes me want to shoot, sony a900 my workhorse for 10yrs my favourite images , fuji xh1that trigger made me love it more than my xpro1 olympus em1 fav travel camera , polaroid sx70 pulling that out makes everyone your best friend

I have a Ricoh GR (not the 2 with wifi) which I really like. I recently acquired a second-hand Pentax Q system, also great fun. I also have a Pentax K3 which I'm having huge difficultes in getting decent photos out of... my ancient Nikon D50 was more quality-consistant for me! But I do find that cameras without a viewfinder are really lacking something important for me, the physicality of pressing the camera to my eye. Seeing as a large number of your favorite cameras, Mattias, do not have viewfinders, apparently you don't feel the same way! But I can't really fall in love with a non-viewfinder camera + the huge difficulty of seeing anything in the sun if you don't have a viewfinder! Anyway, love your reviews, thanks, Eric.
+Eric Callcut yeah I don't have a problem with it. Specially on the Ricoh GR, I dont need a viewfinder on a 28mm. Everything is in frame anyway. Our kits are quite similar but I have the Pentax KP and Pentax Q. I get very pleasing images from both. Im not sure I follow you on the cameras in this video not having viewfinders. All accept the GR does, so 4 out of 5 :) And there is an optical for the GR if one absolutely has to have one.
I obviously didn't pay attention: I thought the Leica and the Gxr didn't have viewfinders. I did buy the viewfinder for the GR but I hardly ever use it as it does not show accurately what one is taking, particularly when one is close up. In friendship.
Nice, yes... Except that the original Nikon FE was, and is, even better: Faster in operation even if never shot full auto... much better control over exposures & dynamic range with slide films... more consistent shutter speeds across EVs... smoother, better control feel and construction details (over the FE2, as well)... takes all non-AI F-mount lenses directly (EASY, ergonomic stop down metering)... significantly better battery life in practice than FE2 -- just stupendous, in fact -- rendering "the battery issue" vs. an FM2 virtually mute. One downside: no 1/200+ flash sync speed for fills. Not really that close a contest, all things considered fairly. Nikon's electronics have proven amazingly durable... which I didn't expect when I bought my black FE in early 1982. Nikkormat FT-2, FT-3, EL; Nikon FE, FE2, FM2n, FG-20, N80, N75, + "pro bodies" like my F2as and F4... I own 'em all.
Nice video. If u did not try a Fuji X series yet, do urself a great service and try one for a day. Best jpeg out of camera, especially skin tones, easily adaptable to most lenses, very well made (most of them Made in Japan). Awesome Fuji lens lineup.

I got a pocket camera, partially becuase of your videos to it. I am yet to get a TV Z mount zoom with something like 10.5-120 parfocal and constant aperture of 1.7 or better. I don't want to get into stills, but I would love to shoot longer exposure for timelapse and stars. Should I ever get into stills, that it would be smart to get something that mounts MFT so I can use my lenses and adaptations. I also got that manfrotto better video and plan to take it with my on my bike when the weather gets great again.

Mattias, another fun and informative video. I never considered the A7, this video has me thinking it may be a viable choice to get my C/Y Carl Zeiss glass a good work out. I am currently shooting them with a fourthirds body, the major cropping has my uninspired.
Dear Mattias, nearly all your photos are awesome. I don't know if it is a master-postprocessing or a such a talent, but they are real masterpieces. I would like to know your opinion - I've got Sony A7M3 with kit lens. It shoots quite nice, but rather dull. I decided to get some budget fix lens with nice aperture to get more profound photos. What do you think is the most appealing lens for Sony FE for the newbie to get more interesting photos for street and travel?
Since I have a fuji xpro2 I was thinking selling my x100f and xpro1 and buy a m8.2 with zeiss lens for street photography... I shoot manual zone focus at 200-400 iso on the fuji anyway and I don't care about the m8 shitty lcd nor the 10mp. I'm more creative when I'm limited and I want a real digital rangefinder experience. The things that worries me is reliability. I read so many posts about shutter issues, camera freeze, buffer capping out after taking 3 pictures in a row etc... I don't know now.
For a budget beginner which DSLR would you recommend? Leica and Sony can hardly be found in my country and Ricoh is not available. Most mirrorless cameras are not available here 😫. Nikon and Canon are the one most popular...
Mauro Leonardo Mondal I would first an foremost buy a decent affordable lens. Like the Camon 50mm f1.8. Then the body which I can afford. They don't sell any bad DSLRs. All of them is more than a beginner needs.

Now why didn't I think to search. I have looked at loads of places here in the USA , all have backordered stock except for Ricoh direct that is why I said almost impossible, not that they were impossible. I see lots of places in Canada but they will not ship to the states .

Nice selection of cameras. I'm back to using an A7 for MF work. The new Voigtlander 65mm is stunning! This year, I want to add back a good ol' DSLR but can't decide. Watching your D500 video, I've been to BestBuy twice to try it out. Really like the OVF- surprising actually. Nothing about it seems amiss. However, there is this tiny voice telling me to buy a Pentax and go smaller. Haha. Hard to explain but the compact K5/K3 series fully featured with great ergo and OVF...that and a few limited lenses might due it for me. So cheap right now too.
Just got the a7 with studio equipment and kit lens 28mm to 70mm for 800 which lens should I get next? I hear the world nifty fifty but if the kit lens has 50mm in it's range is there a difference ?

My favorite camera is Panasonic GM1 in bundle with Panasonic 20mm 1.7, Olympus 45mm 1.8 and Laowa 7.5mm 2.0. Extremely portable and amazing quality.
Mischa I have one also. Use it for video in most of my videos. Its a cool camera.
The GM1 is a superb little camera. With a few small primes, it is a complete system for travel and fun.

+Rick N C/Y is also adaptable to full frame Canon. So there are some options for you.

Dear Mattias, nearly all your photos are awesome. I don't know if it is a master-postprocessing or a such a talent, but they are real masterpieces. I would like to know your opinion - I've got Sony A7M3 with kit lens. It shoots quite nice, but rather dull. I decided to get some budget fix lens with nice aperture to get more profound photos. What do you think is the most appealing lens for Sony FE for the newbie to get more interesting photos for street and travel?
Minolta Rokkor 59mm f1.7. Or if you want AF would get the Zeiss 35mm f2.8.

Since I have a fuji xpro2 I was thinking selling my x100f and xpro1 and buy a m8.2 with zeiss lens for street photography... I shoot manual zone focus at 200-400 iso on the fuji anyway and I don't care about the m8 shitty lcd nor the 10mp. I'm more creative when I'm limited and I want a real digital rangefinder experience. The things that worries me is reliability. I read so many posts about shutter issues, camera freeze, buffer capping out after taking 3 pictures in a row etc... I don't know now.
Superman's CGI mouth its an old camera so more have had time to break. You will find more horror stories about the x100f and thats brand new.

For a budget beginner which DSLR would you recommend? Leica and Sony can hardly be found in my country and Ricoh is not available. Most mirrorless cameras are not available here 😫.

Mauro Leonardo Mondal I would first an foremost buy a decent affordable lens. Like the Camon 50mm f1.8. Then the body which I can afford. They don't sell any bad DSLRs. All of them is more than a beginner needs.

If you can afford it after buying a good lens its fine. Like I said, there are nor bad DSLRs in stores today.

interesting camera choices! I noticed you got the small 21mm voigtlander there. any chance you could talk about it in a video? I presume the small form and focal&aperture combination sure should affect the style of shooting and output. what do you say?

I wish I had purchased the Ricoh GRii over Christmas , now the stock is almost impossible to find plus the price has gone up.
Now why didn't I think to search. I have looked at loads of places here in the USA , all have backordered stock except for Ricoh direct that is why I said almost impossible, not that they were impossible. I see lots of places in Canada but they will not ship to the states .
It was recently on sale here but still in stock in a handful of stores.

Nice selection of cameras. I'm back to using an A7 for MF work. The new Voigtlander 65mm is stunning! This year, I want to add back a good ol' DSLR but can't decide. Watching your D500 video, I've been to BestBuy twice to try it out. Really like the OVF- surprising actually. Nothing about it seems amiss. However, there is this tiny voice telling me to buy a Pentax and go smaller. Haha. Hard to explain but the compact K5/K3 series fully featured with great ergo and OVF...that and a few limited lenses might due it for me. So cheap right now too.

Just got the a7 with studio equipment and kit lens 28mm to 70mm for 800 which lens should I get next? I hear the world nifty fifty but if the kit lens has 50mm in it's range is there a difference ?
+TheBrooklynBaZooka a huge difference. A kit zoom cant match the detail and look of a fast 50mm prime lens.
