    Your opinion of this album is exactly as mine. This album definitely sounds like an album written and recorded in the 21st century.
    If this album would have sounded like something out of the 80's, I would have immediately dismissed it.
    Def Leppard definitely has similar influences as myself, being that we love the Glitter Rock era out of Britain in the early 70's.
    I loved this album on the first listen and it's my favorite release from the band since "Hysteria."

    Def Leppard are masters at making over produced filler albums. Bands like La. Guns, Whitesnake, Duran Duran, A-Ha Judas Priest and mighty Bon Jovi continue to make masterpieces. Thanks for your review as I was still sitting on the fence regarding the effort of laying down $30 on this release.

      Bon Jovi... masterpieces... OMG. I cannot even remember when it was the last time BJ released a decent album. DL might sound a bit the same all the time, but at least there is not any album which should go straight to the garbage bin, contrary to BJ´s.

    Pretty spot on and fair review, my good man. It is Quite Great, indeed. It has brought me tears of joy and sorrow. There is a somber retrospective pulse running trough the various themes represented in these songs that has helped a 47 year old boy who is finally starting to feel like a grown adult cope with the loss of his beautiful mother only three days before the album's released. She was only 19 years older than me. Her name was France and she also always loved Def Lep. One of her favorite songs was Slang :/\ She made me a mix tape of DL, Queen, Boston & Aerosmith when I was 14 and I've never looked back. She would have loved this album certainly. hi brendon!!! this is my opinion on the Def Leppard album, having only listened to some of the new songs. I have been a follower of the band since the 80's, but I think the change they have had from that sound to the current sound, is what bothers most of the older fans. Of course they as a band have every right to make the music they want, plus the absence of Steve Clark's songwriting has been too noticeable compared to the early albums, plus I think Vivian Campbell is a wasted talent.

Instead, it came in a cardboard sleeve with art similar to the vinyl. All We Need, Gimme A Kiss, Lifeless, and Unbreakable are the biggest standouts for me. The intro to All We Need really makes me think of Animal. I thought it a little odd that the second bonus exclusive is a version of Lifeless without Allison Krauss. It's not a bad version, but it's so much better with her vocals harmonizing with Joe Elliott's.

Based on the circular sticker that was outside the wrapper, it will obviously be a single. I really hope it gets good airplay, maybe on country radio. Agree with your review! I've been a fan since HND so have run about the full race with this band. I dig their Pyro & Hysteria eras best, but have also liked plenty of their stuff post Hysteria also. That said, there's also been a fair amount I haven't liked! But for me, I'm digging this new one and it might be my favorite release since Adrenalize. At the very least it's way better for me than their past couple albums. I just dig that their big, trademark sound with hooks and harmonies are back here. There's a handful of those types of fun, catchy tunes. And then there's some good variety with some other tunes. I do have to say there's a few songs I really don't care for like This Guitar which is just too Country for me. Also kind of lukewarm on the two ballads. But overall, there's still a solid 10-11 tracks here which is a "normal" album worth of material. Overall, excellent album at this stage of their career.

      I started following the band during pyromania and like you enjoy that album and Hysteria best. But I also like lots of their post Hysteria era and like you also don’t like some of it. But this album and the last one have both been high water marks for the band IMO.

      @@BrendonSnyder I got on board with 'Hysteria' and probably played that cassette in my walkman more than any other... then I grabbed 'Pyromania' about a month later and loved it even more. and then just kept working my way backwards through their catalog loving each one - when adrenalize came out and my parents started signing along to "let's get let's get let's get let's get rocked" they kind of lost their "cool" factor. The way I see it now: the first album is the one your older cousin loves. high and dry is the album you love. pyromania is the album your younger brother loves. hysteria is the album your younger sister loves. adrenalize is the album your mom loves. slang is the album nobody loves. I think this might be the album EVERYONE will love - except your older cousin, he gave up on them 38 years ago and only listens to the first two albums.

      How is Def Leppard part of the trend?! And no clearly I don’t buy everything, there are way more releases than the few I get each week. And in these videos I also mention Wednesday’s episodes of New Music Finds where I gather up everything I’ve bought for the week which often includes non-new releases. And with over 11,000 CDs in my collection, you don’t get to that level only buying new. Plus if you want to see me dig deep then check out the series What’s That You’re Listening To…which i often go on musical tangents related to major bands but dig deep at that point. Bottom line, just check out more videos and you’ll see more of a depth. Thanks for watching.

      @@BrendonSnyder their trajectory reminds me of Metallica's... 'On Through the Night’ and ‘High and Dry’ are like ‘Ride the Lightning’ and ‘Master of Puppets’ - a lot of fans of those albums hated everything that came afterwards. ‘Pyromania’ is when they exploded on MTV like ‘And Justice for All’. ‘Hysteria’ is their POP masterpiece just like ‘The Black Album’ they got a more mainstream audience and had their biggest hits. Adrenalize is like ‘Load’, more hits but a lot more mainstream ‘Slang’ is crap when they tried to do grunge… then they have a bunch of albums that mostly were hit or miss… the live albums are great for both bands, 'Retro Active' (which I hated when it came out but gave it another listen recently and LOVE all the Steve Clark songs) is their disc 1 of 'Garage Inc.' releasing songs that were B-sides and 'Yeah!' is their disc 2 of 'Garage Inc.' with lots of new cover songs. Def Leppard had a few 'St. Anger' albums but nothing as bad as 'Lulu'. 'Euphoria' is their 'Death Magnetic' when they started to return to their roots with songs like 'Promises' but the rest of it is weaker, this album is their comeback album like ‘Hardwired’ was to Metallica.

Stand out tracks for me are ‘Take What You Want’ and ‘Unbreakable’ Most of the ‘Rockers’ just sound a bit tacky… for example ‘Gimme a kiss’ would be an absolute belter for it not for the poor, out of date lyrics. The last album was better. Don’t burn me! Just my opinion. Still glad they are at least trying. The next album will see them towards their late 60s so maybe one last hurrah with Mutt to pul them back in-line

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  2 года назад

      Hey not everything is for everyone. I don’t expect them to produce another Hysteria or Pyromania. I was pleasantly surprised on the last album when they made a good throwback album albeit with modern influences. And in terms of that maybe the last album is better. But then Def Leppard have never made the same album twice and especially not a similar sounding album in a row. So I was already expecting something different and ok with it. Personally the albums I like least are Slang, X, and Yeah. While this album may not beat others, I think it easily beats those. But this is also just my opinion. Unfortunately Mutt is retired. He still writes occasionally, like on the latest Bryan Adams album but he doesn’t produce and I think Def Leppard are scared from their time together in the 80’s so I don’t think an album with him will ever happen again. But it would be nice.

I think it has a bit of a Slang feel to it and I know they took some serious flack over Slang. On the whole I feel it's a good solid product and like I said I found several songs I like.

      They have really struggled with writing good songs and good riffs ever since Steve Clark died...they just haven't been the same. I still liked parts of X, Sparkle Lounge, but the self titled album and this one are really pathetic efforts where they have tried to copy other bands instead of being themselves. They say they don't want to repeat a Highndry or Pyromania or Hysteria, but that is what Def Leppard is, so they should try to sound like themselves, not the bands they are trying to copy. They used to pride themselves and I was proud of them for making such classic, consistent albums, but what has happened? The songs are boring, the classic melodies are not there, not many classic riffs. So disappointed, as I have always loved the band. 3-4 songs I really like on this one...out of 15 it's not real flash...

For almost any track on the album, you can find a review that thinks it's great and a review that thinks it's weak, with near equal spread in between. Same goes for the album as a whole. Though most seem to like it, their takes range from "decent" to "super".

    Ok lets start with the negatives. 1st why on earth when his listeners are 80s and the 90s people and they drag us back into 70s music era. However on the good side I did like the album They don't have a very bad song like they usually do with the previous albums( fillers). The songs fit well and complement one another Their writing style a bit different then their previous song writing With their previous style of writing once the song started you would know what's coming next in the song It was a well structured staggered song writing style. However with this new album, because he's bending his voice and making it more groovy I had on occasions been surprised how he sang the song moving in dimensions that I did not anticipate. Energy level is good thru out the album. It won't put you a sleep What we want from Joe on their next album is to go back to your roots, not any other bands roots. High and dry Pyromania Hysteria and Adrenalize and even from slang and come up with an album so powerful to shock the hell out of us. How about a song where all 3 guitarists use base giatar for a change. If you want to be on the 3rd page of greatest rock band as you put it then you owe this to your followers who followed you thru thick and thin for 4 decades to put all your energy and efforts to come up with the greatest DL album ever!! Now the songs that stand out for me are the 1st 2 releases ALL WE NEED, OPEN YOUR EYES UNBREAKABLE and LIQUID DUST.. UNBREAKABLE is like a disco style song it starts exactly how it should perfect but they don't fully capitalize on it I think the choir spoiled it I would have moved in dimensions that soar to the highs where as the choir took it to different dimensions still I like it very much. These are the ones I remember liking There are few more that are good aside from the ones that I listed here. Joe i do have strong 12 songs for your consideration. All Hysteria Pyromania High and dry and slang style songs. Take care

They break the whole flow and since they’re not Power Ballads they just seem out of place. So I’d cut tracks #4, #8, and #12…keeping all of the rockers. I'm thinking they are either just not interested in doing that or they are not capable of writing those type of songs anymore. I often think what Def Leppard would sound like today if Steve Clarke was still alive, I'm thinking a lot different to what they've dished up on Diamond Star Halos. At times during Diamond Star Halos I thought I was listening to Brian Adams and not Def Leppard. A couple of my friends thought the same. Oh well, I guess us dinosaurs that are stuck in the 80's can always go and put on "Pyromania" , "On Through the Night", "High n Dry" and "Hysteria" and lament what could have been.

      Well said. There are a few good songs here and then some that are decents, but when I hear songs like This Guitar, I think it could just as well be a Joe Elliot solo album. I really only like the first 5 albums and think they peaked with High N Dry. I would love an album where most songs were in the same vein as Take What You Want. I do need to listen to this album more though to fully judge. And to be fair it's 15 songs. Remove some of the bloat and maybe we can look on it more fairly as if our least favorite 5 songs are B-sides.

    Unfortunately nothing of theirs has resonated with me since Adrenalize. Maybe it was because Steve Clark was an integral part of the band? Who knows...
    Iron Maiden also lost their touch imo after the early 90s.

    Meh it's o.k. First track is killer, after that it seems to go downhill for me. The guys just sounded bored to me on this album. Also I feel like 15 songs were to many for this album. I wanted more heavier songs like the first song and I didn't get that. This is a really lite album aside from the first track. I know I'm in the minority on this but for me a very forgettable album. I really, really wanted to like this album though, but it just doesn't do anything for me. Just my opinion.

    None of the songs in this album have structure and don’t have any development like there classic songs. Most of the songs in this record starts right away, missing out a lot of music variety in the song. Overall there boring songs except for the first singles and un breakable maybe

      I respect your opinion but there is clearly structure to the songs even if you don’t like it. No they do not sound like the Hysteria era, but then not everyone expects a band to stand still and never grow. All albums don’t have to sound the same. Right now I’m enjoying something new by this great band. When I want the classics I’ll go back to the older albums because they’re always there. But the new stuff is interesting too IMO.

    It's like we listened to different albums. It sounds rehashed and half assed. Many of these tracks sound like leftovers from Slang euphoria and X. The others are throwaways. The solos are derivative of previous ones. The most Leppard like song is take what you want and the ending is beyond lame. Just whoas whoas like they couldn't be bothered to finish it. I enjoy it up to the solos and then skip it. Open your eyes steals the outros from love don't lie on X. From here to eternity is ripping off the dreadful kings of the world on mirror ball, albeit this version is loads better. The krauss duets are forgettable. Overall there's maybe 4 songs out of 15 with any repeat value. Vivian brought nothing to the table and looks bored out of his mind in all the performances and interviews.

    My conclusion upon listening to the album is that Phil Collen is a very good guitarist, but a horrible song writer. U Rok Mi might be the worse song ever written by any member of Leppard, with Liquid Dust holding a close second. Both written by Collen. Overall, the album is mostly adult contemporary fluff. And to me Fire It Up definitely has the “Pour Some Sugar” sound.

    • @BrendonSnyder

      You’re certainly entitled to your opinion. But personally I think it’s Phil Collen who makes Def Leppard sound like Def Leppard and I think the rest of the band agrees considering he is always the primary song writer.

    • @ScottJohnson80
      @ScottJohnson80 2 года назад +4

      @@BrendonSnyder Correct, he is the primary songwriter and that’s why they have been relatively unsuccessful since Post Hysteria. It’s not primarily that the music scene has changed dramatically, but the song writing has been dull since they no longer have Steve Clark to assist with the catchy riffs. I am a HUGE Leppard fan that just calls it like it is. The music on this album, with the exception of a few songs, is formulaic and the lyrics….wow! One lyric is actually “I let that soul-glow flow”! Who wrote that lyric, Phil Collen! And the lyrics to “Gimme A Kiss” , embarrassing. Another thing is that they’ve taken part of the hook from their song “Promises” and embedded it into “SOS Emergency”. Listen to the “whoa whoa’s”. It’s just a very bad album, in my opinion, but again, that’s just my opinion.
