    I'm no longer Metallica die-hard, but this album to me is their best work since St. Anger. The singles didn't really capture me, until I heard the full album. It just flows nicely, and no fillers. Very groovy, heavy, yet melodic. I put it on par with Megadeth's latest album.

    72 Seasons is pretty much exactly what I expected, it didn't blow me away but it's solid, very much on par with their last 2 albums..

      Absolutely! You totally smoke my mind. They should've trimmed it down to 8-10 songs max and under 45 minutes. These long albums are killing me. I guess, yes, a little diversity would have made it a brilliant album. A few fillers IMO just like the last couple of album. But anyway, what do I know.

From fast killem all style in Too Far Gone and Lux aeterna, pure thrash metal master of puppets style songs in Shadows follow, chasing light, slow groovy heavy style in You Must Burn, Black album style like Inamorata, hard rock load reload style in Crown of Barbed Wire. MOST of the bands from the 80's and earlier put out better albums back then than they did in the 90's and later on. it's the casualty of the CD format, instead of having cassettes and LPs with 15-25 minute sides (30-50 minute total length) they went to a 74 minutes to try to make it feel like you were getting your money's worth to pay for the (back then) higher price of the CD. bands started adding a bonus track which some were good some weren't and then started going from 8-10 songs to 14-18 songs and depending on the band, a lot of these extra songs are "filler" - the music version of deleted scenes from a movie - some good, but mostly bad - things that should have been left on the editing room floor or given away on a B side or a non-single on a movie soundtrack. combine that with the loudness wars of the 90's, the Digital compression of an analog source, auto tune and this is what you end up with.

      We can hope but I think it’s highly unlikely. Even when they did Load and ReLoad it was announced up front that both were happening. There has been no mention of additional songs recorded. Metallica never record extra songs. They select what they will work on and complete only those tracks. That’s why there are literally no outtakes that have ever been released from the band.

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  Год назад

      So you don’t think the songs all kind of sound the same? To me there is no variation in the overall style or sound. They all have the same feel to them. Mind you that doesn’t have to be seen as a negative aspect. Certainly it’s nice sometimes to have an album that rocks the same all the way through. I still like the album but I would have liked more varied style and sound between songs. Certainly their other albums have it. That or it would be nice if the band said this was a conscious decision to make an album of the same kind of songs.

    • @jimmycampbell78

      @@BrendonSnyder To me it's no different from Death Magnetic, Hardwired or even Justice? The only albums that really have strong contrasts between songs and have really soft moments are the s/t, Load and Reload. I mean on 72 Seasons as an example you still have a fast tempo song like Lux Aeterna and then a more slow doomy Black Sabbath-type song like Inamorata so to me you do have those contrasts between songs once you become more familiar with them and the album. Maybe the track-listing does not help as they have grouped similar sounding songs together?

I lived in Vancouver BC Canada. We got lot's of US TV and radio. We were blown away. We went WTF is this, and then went and bought the cassette which I still have but cannot play due to mould. But I have another copy and it's primo. I know old school headbanger story. I have spun the album 72 Seasons and I am at Meh stage ... I have only done one listen. After several listens I tend to agree with you, Brendon. This album has some really good tracks, but it does suffer from the songs sounding like too much of the same thing over and over again. I’ve felt the past few Metallica releases were a little bloated as far as length of the albums and this one is no different. I drive about 45 minutes to work and then back, so I tend to judge by whether or not I can listen to an entire album within that time frame to really allow me to take it all in. I’m certainly not going to jump out of the car and pick up where I left off on the album when I get to my destination. I understand not every album should be the same length and giving us that extra time is nothing to complain about, but I remember the days of the 40-45 minute album and that just doesn’t seem to happen that much anymore. I also agree not having the band logo on the front cover is a mistake. All in all, nice review.

But, I do enjoy the "classic" Metallica, love the Black album, and I listened to most of this online the past two days, and I thought it was a pretty solid album. It also sounds great, and the performances seem solid to me. Lyrics are ok. Songwriting seems decent. It seems like it

Inamorata was a little disappointing because I expected an 11 minute song to evolve into something else, but it ended up being fairly repetitive; still good, but I was hoping for it to kick into gear at some point and it never did. METALLICA the "Masters of Metal"! That is a very bold statement to make! Honestly, they haven't made a great or very good album since the 1980s; the only other album that stands out, in my opinion, is the "Load" one from 1996, that one is basically good from start to finish, which can't be said about any other album since the 1980s, and yes that includes "Death Magnetic" as well. Also one could dispute that Load is really a Metal album, since it has many different influences, such as country, rock, psychedelic music, etc. Most of Metallica's post 1980s albums have lots of fillers and rather mediocre songs, and feel way too long, almost always filling an entire CD, making them around 77-79 minutes long.
    Comparatively, there are many new or newer Metal bands that could actually do justice to the prestigious phrase "Masters of Metal": For example, BLADE KILLER (Heavy Metal), STEEL RATH (Heavy Metal from Brazil), OMNICIDAL (play Melodic Death Metal), DEMONA (Speed Metal from Chile), SCEPTOR (Heavy Metal), RAVAGE (Power Metal from Boston), HEXEN (from L.A. play Melodic Thrash), BLISTERED EARTH (old School Thrash Metal in the vein of early Metallica & early Testament), CENOTAPH (from Mexico play Melodic Death Metal), ETERNAL SACRIFICE (play Epic Black Metal), ARMOR COLUMN (Power/Thrash Metal from New York), SANHEDRIN (Heavy Metal from New York), VEKTOR (Progressive Thrash Metal from USA), and ASPIRE (Symphonic Power Metal from USA).
    And of course, there are plenty of other older Metal bands that could also reasonably vie for that prestigious phrase! Such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motörhead, & Black Sabbath [all of these had a big influence on Metallica], to name just the most obvious ones.

    Maybe a question to ask is; how do you do something that you've already done AND basically perfected 37 years ago (thrash metal: ie, Master Of Puppets, Ride The Lightning), while bringing something somewhat new to the table? I'd love to hear Metallica thrash out to some new material but they probably feel like it would be pointless and compromised. Not that I think their current sound is anything new or particularly all that interesting. At this stage of the game I see them as a heavy rock band who write OK songs that I'm not all that interested in hearing. To be fair it must be almost impossible to live up to groundbreaking standards, album after album, decade after decade, lol. Today, I'm glad they're still going with a massive audience who want to buy their new album.

    My first listen to the album felt like an 80 minute long song with what seemed like the same E-F-F-E chord progression chugged out again and again, with the same solo over and over. The overlong repetitious chug of Em, the lack of range, dynamic, tangent, and change let me down. There was no flow, feel that the album was an evolving journey, it was all the same muddled mesh. No peaks and valleys, as you mentioned. But Im enjoying hearing new leases of highlights and the album is starting to reveal itself more to me. It is a grower. @@BrendonSnyder ok, I wouldn't say it is an all-out Speed/Thrash album but there are songs that are just as Thrash as some of their classics. Then again are also people out there that don't consider any Metallica thrash at all. Here are the ones I would say fall in that category. Title track is stocked full of thrashy riffs. Hands down thrash for me. The last half of Shadows follow is reminiscent of Ghosts of War by Slayer. Everyone says Lux Eterna sounds like something off Kill em' All. The chorus to Chasing Light is heavy AF and thrash to me. Too Far Gone screams No Remorse....very similar riffage. If Darkness Had a Son has a very similar vibe to songs on Justice. The rest which is almost half the album definitely not thrash. I just heard Barbwire and I agree that it seems related to King Nothing. There was one part where it almost felt like it was gonna go there. That one is probably my least favorite. That or Inamorata. Too "Loadish" for me lol
