Played......NOT played......Makes no difference to me. Rick is there LIVE on stage. Rick's HAMMERING away on the kit, playing pretty much what you hear on their c.d. He never gave up, and always pushed forward. And that my friends, was enough for me. Reason is......I lost my arm in 1987, at 21. Being a drummer my entire life up to that. I thought my days were done and over. Saw what Rick Allen was doing, and I applied the same logic to my kit. Only it is an entire acoustic drum set. No triggers and no samples. ALL ACOUSTIC. Thanks to the incredible SIDEKICK DRUMS snare mount. Allowing me to play my snare or snares like a bass drum, using a bass drum pedal. So like Rick, using his high hat foot to hit a triggered snare pedal. I do the same, on an acoustic snare. Thank you, and GOD BLESS RICK ALLEN.......FOR NEVER THROWING IN THE TOWEL. 🤘🏻💪🏻🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁💪🏻🤘🏻

Right on Tim. You're story rocks brother. I'm not criticizing Rick. I agree Rick's a badass for the mental strength it took to be the drummer he is after his accident. That took balls of titanium. And the money thing, I know Rick's got enough of that. My initial reaction to Rick not playing on Pyromania, was probably based on my own bad experience with my contract.

    For the drums on Pyromania:
The Drums have been sort of played in by Rick Allen. They used an electronic drumkit and using that MIDI information and feed it into the Fairlight II. They would then quantize it and if changes needed to be made they would do all that in the Fairlight. The sounds for the drums are all samples, part created by Mike Shipley and Mutt Lange in the studio....the Toms are Simmons SDS7. The cymbals were then played live at the end and recorded onto the 24 track. A big challenge was to synchronize the Fairlight to the Studer. They used a Q Lock and an AMS Delay unit for that because the SMPTE sync didn't exist yet.

Wow. This is really interesting stuff. I’ve been wondering about it for 40 years. Pyromania is why I started playing drums when I was a teenager.
I found an obscure modern drummer article where Rick says he triggered the Simmons head with his acoustic drums. And then they mixed the acoustic and the Simmons stuff.
But all of this was so ahead of their time. I mean everybody does flavors of this now. But they did it so long ago.
I do similar stuff with my cover band in town. But they did this half a century ago is just impressive.

This is a very interesting point. I hope Rick will open up about it and explain exactly what happened in the studio. And whatever the outcome, if he played on the album or if he didn't... I have nothing but respect for Rick and would totally understand it when he has agreed to leave the drum parts to the producer. The guy created a whole new way of drumming, being the world's first drummer with just one arm ever. He's also a huge inspiration to wounded warriors and he paints amazing art, despite all the hardship and suffering he had to go through after his horrific accident. I've seen DL live many times and Rick is still an amazing drummer, great sound, very powerful and perfect timing. Hats off for Rick, he's a hero.

The only Def Leppard albums that have real drums are OTTN and High And Dry. Pyromania and Hysteria are 100% programmed drums. After that Rick would play electronic drums into a sequencer, which itself is essentially ‘programming’. There may be some real cymbals here and there on some albums and I think there may even be some actual real drums on Slang. Basically Def Leppard have always used program drum parts on their albums. But Rick is still a total badass and brilliant live drummer!

Ralph, Rick Allen has been playing a semi-acoustic drum kit since they recorded "When Love and Hate Collide" in 1995. This would continue with 1996's "Slang," and the only synthetic or electronic accompaniment he used was the foot pedal technology, which by that time could sample real snare, floor tom and other acoustic sounds. If you're the seasoned drummer that you claim, just listen to the new album and you'll hear his simplified accents and fills and know right away he's playing it for real. The original poster is NOT a drummer nor musician and doesn't understand the first thing about triggering sampled sounds, even though the late, great Neil Peart, who consulted Rick Allen on the foot pedals, used them right till the end of his touring career.

Your evidence is not bad, but there is still a chance Rick didn't get a recording studio credit, because he did play and sent exclusivly electronic drums. On the other hand I also don't think Viv and Phil recorded their tracks using miced amps. The way I understand the booklet is...the credits don't need the word additional, because only the additional contributions are listed. You don't read: guitars: phil / viv. You only see their solos listed. You also don't find bass guitar credits for Sav. Only when he played additional guitars. So my understanding is there is a LOT of drum programming going on, but Rick really did play drums. There are so many grooves and breaks being so typical for him, I can't imagine the producer trying to mimic them.
Edit: and....they already play songs from DSH live. It doesn't make sense, letting Rick play what the producers programmed.

I hate to tell you this, but it's not the first time Rick hasn't played drums on a DL recording. Some of the tracks on Pyromania, including the hit "Photograph" are in fact a drum machine. I first heard of this a few years ago when watching a Rick Beato youtube video. He noticed something that I had always questioned as a drummer myself, the timing is too perfect, some of the fills don't sound real, remembering that the technology wasn't quite as good back then, and there's no variance to the cymbals etc. In short, it's programmed. Sounds weird I know, because that was before he lost his arm, but to my knowledge, this would be the first time he hasn't played on an entire album. All I can say is if they did it before, then there's nothing stopping them from doing it again, particularly in this case with it being recorded remotely.

While this is true, during the Pyromania days, Rick hated that. He had an issue with Mutt about it and they fought over that. Mutt really was not always compassionate and he could be blunt to Rick in a way that didn’t always encourage him.

@@rickstamler5931 There are some things on RUclips with the band and Mutt Lange talking about the recording process, as well as podcasts, with Mike Shipley (the engineer). They recorded/sampled real drums and then detuned/augmented those drum sounds and ran them midi, into a drum machine, which was then programmed. I believe it was a Fair Light drum machine. I believe a lot of the bass parts were recorded on a keyboard using a similar process. Such as the bass on "Rock Of Ages".

Yes, It was all drum machine as were a ton of 80's bands. Hysteria was also drum machine. This is not really shocking that Rick did not actually play drums, cause they have been doing the drum machine thing for 40 years now. Even when he had two arms. Not a knock on Rick or his abilities which are amazing, I think it's just how they record stuff. A lot of other 80's hard rock bands tried the same thing.
The band Firehouse stands out to me for sure on the song All She Wrote. You can hear those are not real drums a mile a way and then listen to them isolated. Totally a drum machine.

What bothers me more than the drum thing is that Viv had no writing creds and I can hear it. Joe and Phil are very pop oriented, and it permeates this record. It misses some of Vivs heavier Last In Line style riffs. I met him at a rally car race (he was driving in, here locally) and never asked him about this record. Def Leppard have been programming drums since Pyromania. To keep the timing locked in perfectly all of the original backing tracks on Pyromania used a drum machine. Rick Allen added in some snare hits and cymbals when the record was more or less complete. That was deliberate to create impact; i.e. add in cymbals after the vocals and solos were recorded so that they can sit where there’s space rather than clashing.

I had never heard Bon Jovi live back in the day but I remember a friend lent me a live bootleg cassette of them sometime in the mid-late 90s from when Alec was in the band and I knew instantly that he was not the one on the albums. I was always surprised how long he was playing live with them at that level while not being a very good player.

I understand your confusion and frustration. But to be honest, I kind of respect them for it. I mean, I'm sure it's hard enough to record separately with any drummer. Add Ricks physical limitations, plus the limitations of who can be in the building via health restrictions dealing with the virus... It probably was just easier for the producer to program the drums on a map... the band probably recorded the songs to a click track, the producer took that, and mapped drums over it. Probably much easier to do it that way , just speaking as a musician who does a lot of his own drums that way. BUT... What makes me respect them, is at least they're being open about it. It says right there in the liner notes that the producer programmed the drums. Bands have been having people OUTSIDE the band do the album recordings for years... but not telling you about it. You'd be suprised to know how many of the KISS songs that Peter Criss didn't play on. Same thing with Ace Frehley. It's not uncommon for bands (or producers to force bands) to use session musicians.. particularly if the producer isn't getting what he wants out of one or more of the guys in the band. At least the Leps are being open about it. Thats important I think.

Why wouldn’t you sent the scratch tracks over to your drummer to allow him to put in his idea to the song, then have the producer do the final programming touches in the studio.

At first it bothered me because he such a great drummer and such an inspiration. I started playing drums because of him. With that being said I love the new album and the drum sounds are really great and fit each song. I also had to remember that he (to my knowledge) hasn't played on really any studio album since High and Dry. In my opinion the drum sound on High and Dry was much better than Pyromania. Pyromania was a good album but the drums sound so synthetic and programed that I almost never listen to that particular album. As a drummer we love good sounding drums. I enjoy the songs from Pyro. when they perform them live.Mutt Lang really dropped the drum sticks on Pyro.. lol.. As a musician that records a bit, I can tell you the way they recorded the album is close to the new norm. What we do a lot is have every one record their parts then send them in to the producer, then usually have the drums recorded in the studio with a producer. However, a lot of the times the producer may replace parts or all of the drum tracks with programming to get a better more consistent sound. And the technology has advanced so much that it has become something that saves rime and money for bands. Recording drums is always a very time consuming, expensive and overly tedious affair.

We’d sample them in at half-speed, thinking that we’d get a better sound, because that’s when Fairlight was at 8 bits - you had to get around that part of it. We sampled [Ludwig] Black Beauty snares, other snares, and all kinds of bass drums. We ended up with something that Mutt liked that we could detune a little bit.” so basically they used real drums to sample. Seems like they should’ve just used real drums instead of real samples.

I’m a professional music producer and I can tell you that around 60% of modern mainstream hard rock records are completely programmed today, and 90+% involve drum samples of some kind. As for real cymbals, you’re correct that they typically sound better than programmed, but programmed cymbals have come a very long way to where they are a real option today. Another thing to consider is that drums are the thing you’ll have the hardest time recording at home/remotely. Almost any pro level musician could record guitar, bass and vocals at home with no engineer today, and then send tracks to a producer to put together. Drums on the other hand, even in a traditional sense require a far higher engineering skill level than what most would have. If I were the producer for this album and everyone was stuck remote in lock down, and the drummer of the band played basically an electric kit anyway, I would 100% suggest going to programmed route. I’m sure Rick had plenty of input on getting the parts how he wants them though.

I would say with the advancements in technology, electronic drum kits such as Roland and Alesis, are very easy to record, and now do offer an alternative to acoustic drums. I know that the drummer from Twelve Foot Ninja, exclusively uses a Roland kit, and only does acoustic in the LIVE performances. And that studio is in his house. Not a record company provided, or band owned studio. His house. It can be done, and Rick could have done it this way. Just saying. I do it myself with an Alesis kit in my livingroom.

Electric drums can be done from home pretty much as easily as the other instruments. My thought would be that I’m not sure how much of a setup is required for his very abnormal kit setup and there could have been limitations there. I know there’s a whole team involved with making that kit work correctly live and with strict lockdowns it may have just not been practical.

I can imagine working to programmed drums given the type of recording this time around, but it would be disappointing if Rick didn’t then add his parts.

    Good work, Sherlock!
I guess the ‘remote working from home’ wasn’t possible for Rick.
But here is the thing, apparently, according to other band members like Phil and Joe, the band want to record future albums like they did DSH.
As it happens, I think DSH is the bands weakest album. A real disappointment given how great the self titled 2015 album was.
Perhaps because of the ‘remote working from home’. It may have worked for Joe and Phil but seemingly did not work for Rick and Viv, who made no writing contributions.

Bands do this a lot. The producer can add elements with samples, or they can lay a foundation for the drummer to play to. Killswitch Engage even did this when they record a apart from each other. On Wikipedia it says Rick played drums, and it says the producer programmed drums.

You want a weird mix of live and programmed drums? Look at Bobby Z from Prince & The Revolution.
Prince typically recorded with a Linn drum machine. It's all over his classic songs like "Let's Go Crazy" and "When Doves Cry". And since Prince could play all the instruments himself, he'd just overdub live cymbals where he needed them.
So that left Bobby Z in an awkward position as the drummer for live shows. If you look at him in concert, he's frequently standing while the Linn beat goes on behind him, and he hits the cymbals at the appropriate time.

  • @soulcraft79

As someone who has recorded, mixed, and programmed drums to a relatively high level with the same recording software used on Def Leppard’s DSH. (Logic Pro). It is my humble belief that Rick played all the parts on an electronic drum kit, which was Midi’d straight into his computer at home “live” to capture all the parts he wrote, performed and will perform (in his style) in real time, which in turn would be digitally mapped in the process (not recorded, except for maybe the cymbals, later on, but since it’s not mentioned in the credits, maybe not). All that he would have to do then is send the file to the producer (Ronin) to lock the parts into a timing grid so the other guys could all record their parts “in time”, the way that they did, remotely. It makes no sense to do it any other way than the way that they did during the Covid lockdown.

    • @thebaldshredder
      @thebaldshredder  2 года назад +10

But then I'm curious as to why there is no credit for the location of where Rick recorded his parts, like there is for the other 4 guys.

    • @soulcraft79
      @soulcraft79 2 года назад +5

Technically its not “recorded”, its played into a timing grid through midi, which is a “digital information transfer”. Too confusing for most people not familiar with the process to understand.

Rick had to give the producer a guide drum track to work from. Otherwise if he didn’t create the drums then the band could be left with songs they cant duplicate live. Just think about it for a moment, who the hell is going to create drum parts for a one armed drummer to duplicate live?, but the drummer himself.

drum programming is very standard these days in the industry, it transcends well beyond DL or Rick. Nothing bad about it....ask Motley Crue :) It was even more common during COVID era projects for obvious reasons. What some of these bands do is that they record everything on top of a click track to keep tempo and later experiment with different drumming sounds. Rick's kit is electronic, so not really any difference at all in the quality or the sound if it is played live or programmed during the recording as they are the same samples. One thing that you wonder is how much input he has on what to put in the track being programmed, like the type of fills or the composing of the actual beats. He may have well composed those beats and the producer turned that into programming. Many drummers play and write their beats, define the tone, sample the sounds and later someone programs those into the machine, not necessarily the drummer. The writing credits only tell the part of the story. Vivian played with a slide guitar on this album and i am sure he came up with it and it is nowhere on the credits...so go figure. Watch this interview with Rick that explains the process, after the 5 minute mark ruclips.net/video/p3Q261WIFAs/видео.html

I've been a fan since the 80s.. I play drums as a hobby.. I knew that Rick Allen wasn't playing drums back then during recording because I knew real early what electric kits, real kits, and programming sounded like. He has a lot of loops on his kits.. Rick Allen has to learn the songs and they are rather simple. Considering he is getting older, his kits are becoming more straight to the point.. he dont have to reach, everything is right there in front of him. And most importantly, he gets the job done.
