GREAT PICS!!! My top five from 1991: 1. Great White - Hooked 2. Enuff Z' Nuff - Strenght 3. D.A.D. Riskin' it all 4. Danger Danger - Screw it! 5. Tangier - Stranded
Your last 3 are all excellent albums! DAD is still around making fantastic albums too. I wish Danger Danger would make a new album but I do love the side projects. And Tangier was fantastic with their new frontman Mike LeCompte. He made a solo ep shortly after this album which is really good.
Alice Cooper Hey Stoopid it's one of my alltime favorite albums My top 5 1991 1.Alice Cooper - Hey Stoopid 2.Europe - Prisioners In Paradise 3.Enuff z'nuff - Strength 4.Saigon Kick - S\T 5.L.A. Guns - Hollywood Vampires
Great selection Brendon.I think Enuff Z'Nuff is a underrated band that deserves more love. The same with LA Guns. Imo LA Guns got over shadowed by Guns N Roses and Tracii Guns got the short end of the sick. While i love Slash to death sometime I wonder What LA Guns would be like if Tracii never left the band.
EZN is so underrated. It’s shocking they weren’t bigger. They are every bit as good as Cheap Trick IMO. Honestly I don’t know if GNR would have made it without Slash. His bluesy guitar style is so unique that it’s one of the signatures of the band.
Great list ! My 1991 Glam Metal List 1. Enuff Z’nuff - Strength 2. White Lion - Main Attraction 3. Tesla - Psychotic Supper 4. Mr Big - Lean Into It 5. Tyketto - Don’t Come Easy
One of the best second wave glam metal bands was XYZ in my opinion. They didn't get much recognition but their self titled 1989 debut album and 1991 "Hungry" are kick ass
1. Skid Row "Slave to the Grind" 2. Enuff Z Nuff "Strength" 3. KingOfTheHill "KOTH" 4. Badlands "Voodoo Highway" 5. Tesla "Psychotic Supper" Honorable mention: Mr. Big "Lean Into It" GnR "Use Your Illusion 1" and Europe "Prisoners In Paradise" Yes I recognize that Skid album is where they progressed beyond just being a glam metal band but I'll include it in my top 5 anyway .
@@BrendonSnyderI should probably give "Hollywood Vampires" an honorable mention but truth is I thought there was too many filler songs on it and I would say the same for the 3rd Faster Pussycat album. Both of those bands disappointed me on the 3rd album but LAG had the better album of the two.
Great list. Kix "Hot Wire" would have been my top with Skid Row. A couple others that came out in 1991 that were great were Tesla "Psychotic Supper" and XYZ "Hungry" album. I must be in the minority but I thought Britny Fox "Boys In Heat" was their best album in production and songs in general. Nice post!
Both Tesla and XYZ are excellent albums as well. I like Boys In Heat as well especially out of the two Dean Davidson albums. But out of all three I find myself returning to Bite Down Hard more often. It’s a very strong, solid, and consistent album from start to finish.
Interesting choices. I’m so glad to hear you call it Glam Metal. That Hair Metal term really grinds my gears. TESLA Psychotic Supper number one of the year for me, but that won’t shock anyone. Edison’s Medicine and Song And Emotion (written about Steve Clark) are monster tracks. Strong songs from top to bottom on that album, including lesser known songs such as Had Enough, Call It What You Want, Freedom Slaves and Stir It Up. I love that L.A. Guns album you chose for number one. Another excellent video. I still have the 3D glasses that came with the CD. Too bad it was such a sad time for music The Glam Metal scene was my favorite time in music in my lifetime. I remember how a lot of us felt as the scene was being pushed out in favor of the more depressing sound of Grunge.
I’ve also always liked the Europe album Prisoners In Paradise. At the time it flew completely under the radar. Shotgun Messiah and Heartbreak Blvd is excellent.
Shotgun Messiah is one of my all time favorites. Saw them on their Second Coming tour at Max's bar n grill in Ithaca NY. They werent headlining but we were there just to see them. Got to meet them, Skold was an ass but Harry was cool as shit lol.
Great vid. Love all of the albums you mentioned and have all of them in my collection. A few that didn’t get mentioned that I also love from 1991 are Tesla - Psychotic Supper, Kix Tracee - No Rules, The Scream - Let It Scream, and Asphalt Ballet’s Self Titled Album.
I own those additional album you mentioned as well. So many great releases from 1991. I especially like The Scream and anything John Corabi is part of.
My faves of 1991 (no order): Badlands - Voodoo Highway Bulletbiys - Freak Show Mr. Big - Lean Into It DLR - A Little Ain't Enough Saigon Kick - Saigon Kick The Scream - Let It Scream White Lion - Main Attraction Heavier stuff: Armored Saint - Symbol Of Salvation COC - Blind Crimson Glory - Strange & Beautiful Infectious Grooves - The Plague... Metal Church - The Human Factor Ozzy - No More Tears Prong - Prove You Wrong Warrior Soul - Drugs, God, & The New Republic
Oh I forgot to say thank you for bringing up Great White - Hooked. It’s an absolutely stellar album that I never hear anyone talking about, though I’ve loved it ever since it came out. My wife who doesn’t even care for the genre couldn’t help but mention how great it was. We were sitting in the living room by the fire just talking and I put it on without saying a word. After a couple songs she commented on how good the band was, and how sonically pleasing the recording was. :-)
Despite it coming out in 1991 they still had success with it including it selling Half a million copies and going gold. If they hadn’t been tagged with the glam metal label they would have been much bigger. They’re just a great blues rock band at their core.
@@BrendonSnyder I couldn’t agree with you more. I really don’t know why they were put it in that category for this video, or why slave to the grind was also, and then amazingly, it wasn’t included. For me it would’ve been at the top of the list. But there are so many different tastes, that’s why we have so many bands, and it’s a good thing. :-)
Great selections! In 1991 Motley Crue released Decade Of Decadence (greatest hits compilation) which had the new song “Primal Scream”, one of my favorite MC songs, if not my favorite one.
I'd definitely put Skid Row's 'Slave To The Grind' in my Top 5. It's easily their best album and just a powerhouse all the way through. And I always appreciate when you give Enuff Z'Nuff a shout out. They're one of my favorites as well. Along with 'Strength,' I'd also highly recommend 'Animals With Human Intelligence' to anyone looking to dive into their catalog.
I'll always have a soft spot for their debut. Saw them play at a club in NW Indiana in 1990. Great show! I just wish Donnie and Chip would get back together. EZ'N without Donnie (his voice + song writing) just isn't the same for me.
Hi Jared, yeah I wish they would too. It may happen. They’ve been talking and he plays on the new album on one track. So it’s not all bad blood. My first album by them was Strength which is probably why it’s my favorite.
The first Skid Row album could be considered as a Hair Metal album. But Slave to the grind, man... It's so heavy, almost trashy . Can't be on this list for me...
My top five from 1991 1. Skid Row - Slave To The Grind 2. Guns N' Roses - Use You Illusion 3. Saigon Kick - Saigon Kick 4. The Scream - Let It Scream 5. Tesla - Psychotic Supper
"Strength" is a masterpiece! I was still steeped in glam in 91 but it was all getting noticeably formulaic to me. I was also starting to explore punk, jazz, etc.
My memory of what came out in 1991 is not as good as yours, but I have all 5 of those CDs and agree with you. L.A. Guns is one band that still puts out great music and would love to hear your review of their collection. Loving all your new episodes!
LA guns were a band with so much talent that they just kept getting better after their scene was dead. Not a shrinking violet fan, but everything else in their catalog for me is essential.
Oleg, do you have and like the album American Hardcore? That album is the only one I can’t listen to anymore. It’s just not the sound of LA Guns and should never have been released under the band name. Personally I love the Shrinking Violet album and line-up. I actually saw this line-up open for Poison, Ratt, and Great White. But of course my favorite is any line-up with Phil Lewis.
@@BrendonSnyder not a jizzy fan. That album didnt click for me. I do enjoy dreamtime and track one (cant recall from memory) I liked american hardcore. Although I'm an 80s rock/metal fan first, I embraced alot of those bands 90's sounds with the exception of warrant. I did not like ultraphobic
Hollywood Forever is a masterpiece! As for American Hardcore, I bought it without ever hearing a song and thought it was some factory mistake of putting the wrong cd in the case. Singer feels like Rob Zombie and does not do any justice to LA Guns sound.
Thanks Brian, I appreciate it. Glad to have you on board! Just posted a video for 1992 if you’re interested, see link ruclips.net/video/WqvLoBGdaDs/видео.html
Fantastic album but I don’t consider Van Halen glam Metal even though that’s their roots. Sort of the same with Bon Jovi. Both bands elevated out of the category. Just my opinion.
Nice video Brandon. I don't know if it's Glam metal but I thought I would mention it anyway 🙂 my fave album from 1991 is the Shadow King ST album. Love that album! Weird how the Great White Hooked album cover was censored. Thankfully I have the original pressing 😁👍
I wouldn’t consider Shadow King glam metal, they were AOR or melodic rock. But a great album nonetheless. Lou Gramm and Vivian Campbell were great together.
My 5 favorite of 1991 from this genre (in alpha order): Danger Danger - Screw It Enuff Z'nuff - Strength Scream - Let It Scream Thunder - Backstreet Symphony Tyketto - Don't Come Easy Other 1991 hard rock albums of note: Guns 'n' Roses - Use Your Illusion I & II Ozzy Osbourne - No More Tears RTZ - Return to Zero David Lee Roth - A Little Ain't Enough Van Halen - For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge
I took full notes. I’ll certainly make a specific playlist out of it. Bite Down Hard is in my list of awesome albums I love from beginning to end. Johnny Dee is *perfect* meat-and-potatoes drumming! Try the sort-of rare excluded track “Turn On.” Thank you Mr. Snyder!!
I was a little surprised that Steelheart didn't make the list. But then I realized that their self titled album came out in 1990, and "Tangled in Reins" came out in 1992. So even though they were awesome in 1991, they didn't actually release an album in 1991.
Well what happened is, the re-released the album in 1991 with new art work when their video for “I’ll Never Let You Go” took off. So a lot of people believe it came out in 1991 but in fact as you figured out it really came out in 1990. But Tangled In The Reins made my 1992 list if you’re interested see link ruclips.net/video/WqvLoBGdaDs/видео.html
Minha lista 1. Danger Danger - Screw It! 2.Tuff - What Comes Around Goes Around 3. White Lion - Mane Attraction 4. Shotgun Messiah - Second Coming 5. Tyketto - Don't Come Easy Almost Got In: Use Your Illusion 2
Kik Tracee - No Rules (a masterpiece; one of the best albums of the decade) XYZ - Hungry (excellent riffs, drumming, and production; very underrated band) Enuff Z' Nuff - Strength (another masterpiece that took a while for me to recognize as such) Bang Tango - Dancin' on Coals (not as heavy as Psycho Cafe, but funky and hook-laden; BT was unlike any other band at the time) Tesla - Psychotic Supper (do I really need to say anything about Tesla?) Note: Omitting Slave to the Grind (a masterpiece), because although Skid Row is generally considered glam metal, this album is most definitely not.
I love the Kik Tracee album as well and both XYZ and Bang Tango are great bands. There were so many good ones. Definitely no shortage of amazing bands back then.
I think Alice Cooper was certainly Glam Metal for that period Brendon. 'Trash' & 'Hey Stoopid' is why Alice is still going to this day, absolutely no doubt about it, those albums put him back in the game. Skid Row's 'Slave To The Grind' is an incredible album.
Great list! Good to see Britny Fox's "Bite Down Hard" getting recognition. I was a fan of Dizzy Dean Davidson, but really liked his replacement, Tommy Paris, a lot as well. I think Tommy's voice fit the harder edge of BDH, whereas DDD fit the bluesier stuff on their first 2 albums. You mentioned that Michael Kelly Smith was in Cinderella's early lineup, which is a cool fun fact connection between those bands, but as an added note... Britny Fox's original drummer, Tony Destra, was in Cinderella as well during the years that MKS was, but tragically, Tony died in 1987 in a car accident prior to BF's success.
Yeah I left the part out about Tony as he never recorded with the band on their first album and wasn’t with them by Bite Down Hard. Too much trivia for one video haha!
Pretty much nailed it with this list. That LAG record is phenomenal, as is Hooked. Bite Down Hard is a criminally underrated record. Billy Childs has been quoted saying if they could have found a replacement for Davidson, and got the record out sooner, it would have had much more of a chance at being bigger.
It’s a fantastic album as is. I like Tommy Paris. I wish they would record with him again. Every so often I hear they are trying to reunite with Dean but nothing ever comes of it. Most recently it was right before COVID but the pandemic put a stop to it again.
It's funny how you mentioned Brittany Fox and Michael Kelly Smith. There's a connection with the band that you showed earlier Black Eyed Susan. Rick Criniti that is it Black Eyed Susan used to be in Cinderella. He played keyboards he's actually in the video for Somebody Save Me. He was partying which means doing drugs and drinking with Sam Kinison he was late to the video shoot Sam Kinison who was supposed to be in the end of the video didn't make the shoot. They had to use Richie Sambora and Jon Bon Jovi instead. That was the last straw for Rick they fired him.
Who knows what the video would have been like with Sam Kinison, but I actually think it works so much better with Jon & Richie. That ending is so classic!
Fine selections , like them all . The KIX Girl Money can is a great collectable , never seen it before . I thought it was funny that you have to “ remove the top “ to get your girl money . Another good video idea from you , never know what topic will show up in notifications . Cheers .
Hi Tom! Yeah I try to keep the video ideas fresh and different from what most other channels are doing. Hopefully everyone continues to enjoy these sorts of things. Basically if they do well I do more and if they don’t then they take a backseat. So we’ll see! Glad you got a kick out of the Girl Money bank! Haha
Thank you for introducing me to L.A. Guns |"Hollywood Vampire"! Wow, I can't believe I missed this gem and haven't been able to enjoy it for the past 30 years ! Stellar album - not what I thought LA Guns would be like. Gong to be playing it a lot in the next few weeks for sure. Fortunately, I did get Great White's "Hooked" back in 1991, so I have had many years of enjoyment out of that one lol. I can still remember when I heard "Congo Square" on the radio :) To me, 1991/92 are the peak years of this genre. Bands were starting to come out of the glam/big hair phase (even before grunge hit hard) and the songs were becoming more serious and less party rock-oriented. The musicians were also at the top of their game as well. Good times!
Hi Warren, you’re very welcome! I’m glad to help spread the word or remind people of these great bands. I just posted the a new video for Best Glam Metal Albums of 1992, see link if you’re interested ruclips.net/video/WqvLoBGdaDs/видео.html
Brendon, cool video again like always, i also love that KIX album very much. I have it just in the car now. 1991 was a great year for this style and its true what you said that in the US it was the last big year for this type of music. In Europe it was different. Grunge didnt kicked in in a hard way till the end of 92 and early 93. The metal magazines were still talking about the new releases by BANG TANGO, LA GUNS, WINGER, SLAUGHTER, BABYLON AD, VINCE NEIL during that era, interviuwing those band, and giving them atention on the radio etc...Also they started to talk about NIRVANA or ALICE IN CHAINS but they were not talking about the death of 80s hard rock yet. In the US and the UK it was different. In Japan they never lost faith in this style like you know and they kept selling very well in that country. I am not telling you nothing new i think lol. Other thing, i am going to make a BON JOVI ranking video and i will give some promo to your channel like you asked us to do so, talking about your channel at the beginning of the video and puting a link to your channel. You deserve to have many more suscribers then me. Anyway, greatings from Spain.
I know! I stopped listening to classic rock radio stations because the format changed to include 80’s rock bands and even 90’s grunge. To me classic rock is a style now not a time period. But yeah I can’t believe we are that old! Haha
@@BrendonSnyder I agree "classic rock " to me is '66/'67 to..say '82-'84ish. I stopped listening to classic rock radio too but not because of the expanding genre/time era. But because there's no depth. They only play the hits, no album tracks etc..
Great list. My fav Metal album of the year is "Slave To The Grind" but I wouldn't rank it in the Glam category at all imo. They may have started that way but this is a full blown Heavy Metal album. I mean they took PANTERA out as support for the tour. haha
Brendon, I took some guitar lessons from Michael Kelly Smith at George’s Music. Later, we were in an acoustic 3 piece cover band together that gigged quite a bit. MKS is a cool guy and I even attended his wedding. I lost contact with him and haven’t seen him in about 20 years. He had some great stories about his time in Britny Fox!
I've got a Japanese box set of Hooked with Live In New York. Both the cd cover and box art is the uncensored cover. Back in either 2000 or 2001, I got to see Great White at an invitation only show. It was a blast. After the show, I did get to meet and get my picture taken with Jack Russel. I got the box set signed by Jack and couple others in the band at the time. Unfortunately, I missed Mark Kendall.
I’ve got the Live disc as well but as a stand alone releases. I was lucky enough to meet the band as well on two separate occasions. The first was in 1994 at a record store signing and the second was in 1998 or 1999 before a show. I saw the guys hanging out checking out the opening band LA Guns and I went over and talked to them and got their autographs. When I go to shows I always bring CD covers and a sharpie as you never know who you could run into!
If you don't mind, could you please recommend some albums that are the more raw and heavy side of glam metal, ala Slave to the Grind or the first L.A. Guns album?
Great video. It was just the next generation of rockn roll. If music journalist want to classify a genre on the way that they look and the way that they wear their hair, you have to add in ACDC Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. But that would ruin a 30 year running derogatory narrative. No need to put the use your illusion records in the top five because they were sub par albums with massive hits. I definitely would have put slave at number 1 or 2, but your house your rules my man. Awesome video. Just subscribed
Yeah I thought about Guns N’Roses and do love those albums but just never thought of them as a hair band even though I know they came up during that time. Sort of how I don’t see Def Leppard as part of the NWOBHM scene. The bands out grew those scenes to become bigger than the scene itself. It’s all subjective anyway. Thanks for subscribing!
All of those albums except Blackeyed Susan are still in regular rotation for me. Some of my all time favorites. Still an 80's kid at heart! That Britny Fox album smokes. I've never seen that Kix swag. Very cool! Kix is still rocking here in Maryland. Hope to catch them again soon.
Great choices - I’m certainly with you on Strength and Hot Wire. My glam picks for that year would be Saigon Kick’s debut, Tyketto’s debut, Europe’s Prisoners in Paradise, Mr Big’s Lean Into It and Second Coming by Shotgun Messiah. Sadly though all albums that year would be eclipsed by Metallica’s Black Album, GnR’s Illusion I and II and Nirvana’s Nevermind
All of your choices are excellent and in my collection. Saigon Kick is a florida band where I grew up so I was enjoying them as a local band from around 1989 forward. Amazing band, wish they would reform fully and make a new album. Jason Bieler just released a solo album but it’s a bit to modern sounding and not enough of that Saigon Kick sound IMO.
@@BrendonSnyder I also wish SK would get it back on. The first 3 albums are outstanding. I met the guys back in ‘91 when they supported Extreme over here in the U.K. It seems as though internal frictions split the band and ultimately led to Bieler going solo. I think Tom also left with Matt before Bieler put out Water. I guess he enjoys his independence too much.
Hey stoopid with a bullet. Absolutely brilliant. Runs the gambit in styles but manages to be cohesive. Wind up toy alone ensures its one of the best albums
For me I like a lot of the songs individually. But the album does flow for me. It seems like he tried to cram too many styles, guests, and ideas into one album. Still, I love the album too.
Unfortunately i never really found access to glam/hair metal. This genre passed me by although there are excellent publications. Heard of all the bands you mentioned but own only 2 or 3 CDs by White Lion. This band was really great.
Wow, Great White "hooked" is a fantastic album, might also be my fave GW album, "afterglow" is a personal fave, although pretty hard for me to pick, I like all of their stuff. The Kix "hot wire" album was also a great record. Going to check out the LA Guns record, (they weren't very popular here where I live). Just checked out the LA Guns record, wow, "over the edge" I've heard it a million times (ok not literally) from the Point Break soundtrack, GREAT tune. "It's over now" I've heard too, no idea where though, also a great tune.
Glad you enjoyed it Roger. I’ve got a whole bunch of Top 10 lists if you’re interested, see link to the playlist ruclips.net/p/PLXugCGslmwqnY5_Pk_X7-iiDYnl3-lD-H
Personally mine would be Tuff - What goes around comes around, Skid Row - Slave To The Grind, Lita Ford - Dangerous Curves, Harem Scarem - S/T, Tyketto - Don't Come Easy. Perhaps not all strictly Glam metal
XYZ's "hungry" should have been on the list. That was a great fucking album, one of the best blues oriented glam metal and hard rock, some tracks are straight up heavy metal as well.
The Britny Fox choice is great. Love the first track! Good singer but I did like Dizzy better. Strength is good but a little overlong. Love Enuff Z Nuff though, my favourite album by them is TEN. Great songs, check out The Beast! Hooked by Great White!! “Congo Square” was one of my favourite songs from the nineties. “Desert Moon” was also a cover song I think.
I agree I do like Dean’s voice better but for some reason Bite Down Hard is my favorite album of those first 3. Also I own the whole Enuff Z’Nuff catalogue and agree that 10 is a great album. It was a nice return to form after the experimental Paraphernalia. And regarding the song Desert Moon, no it’s written by the band. Perhaps you’re thinking of Afterglow the last track which is a cover of the Small Faces song.
@@BrendonSnyder Ahh yes, you are right I was thinking of Afterglow. I'm glad you know your EzN. :). Some people only think they put out two albums. :) The later stuff contained some great songs but not with the big production.
Good video. Not the greatest year for the genre. Maybe you can do a video in more of the wheelhouse years of the genre? 87,88,89 . I watched the vid and also subscribed but already knew the year was not a good year for the genre. Also, maybe a video comparing debut and sophomore albums from that era? Poison, Warrant, Cinderella, Tesla, etc.... all great bands that had a fair amount of change between their 1st and second albums.
@@BrendonSnyder I think calling them vinyls is for people that didn’t grow up with records. :-) Calling a record a vinyl is like calling a coffee cup a porcelain. 😂 But hey, rock on.
I hope The Scream is one of them. That and Slave To The Grind. Mane Attraction is amazing. White Lion’s best. But Britny Fox over Skid Row(the first metal album to debut at number 1) and White Lion seems wrong. 1 Skid Row - Slave To The Grind 2 Badlands - Voodoo Highway 3 The Scream - Let It Scream 4 White Lion - Mane Attraction 5 D-A-D - Riskin’ It All
Like I said in the video I was going for the lesser known bands. That’s why I still talked about and mentioned Slave To The Grind. It’s not that they shouldn’t be #1, I just felt it was too obvious. Anyway, I just posted a new video for Top 5 Glam Metal Albums of 1992, see link if your interested ruclips.net/video/WqvLoBGdaDs/видео.html
Oh yes absolutely and they are one of the best! When Juliet didn’t work out, lead vocalist Kenny McGee moved to Tampa Florida where I’m from and joined a local band Heartless and rocked with them for years after before going solo and releasing 3 more albums. The Juliet albums is a near perfect debut.
@@BrendonSnyder Thats great Brendan!! yeah back in about '91 I was at a dollar tree type store in Muncie Indiana and they had the Julliet album. I bought it along with Flotsam and Jetsam STORM COMES DOWN. I was amazed they were a dollar each. Being from Indiana, SWEET FA is another great obscure band that was too late to the game as well!!
1991 The year that " Alternative" became Mainstream....Hair Metal Needed to Die. It Became Formulated, Boring and Predictable.... Rest in Peace Cinderella & Skid Row...Hello B52s & Concrete Blonde....
@@BrendonSnyder Sorry Brother, No offense intended.. Having lived threw that era I always found it Funny that The " Popular" Music of the Time was Called " Alternative".... Alternative to What???
It’s was an in store apparent in 2001 to support their reunion album Man In The Moon. They were all really gracious signing 27 albums for me. I brought all my LA Guns, solo, and related projects.
The last great year for music was 1992 imo. 1. Alice Cooper - Hey Stoopid 2. Skid Row - Slave to the Grind 3. Ozzy Osbourne - No More Tears 4. L.A. Guns - Hollywood Vampires 5. Europe - Prisoners in Paradise
Just wandering what you take of the band roxy blue and there last couple of live releases and the new one and do you like the band sweet fa and the album stick to your guns
Hi Tim, yes I like the debut Roxy Blue album and I have their archival releases as well as their new album. They were never high on my list of favorites back in the day as they came a little too late to the party. The band Sweet FA I didn’t know about back then and found out about them in the late 90’s. However their debut album is amazing! I have their second album but it’s nowhere near as hard rock as the first. They did release a collection of demos that’s great too.
I’ve always thought of WASP as straight metal and not part of the Glam Metal scene. But also I didn’t mean that there weren’t still good releases after 1991. It was just the last year that these bands were on top and thought of a cool until Grunge took over and changed everything.
Yeah, 1991 was the last year of "hair" metal, personally I thought that was a good thing because change was needed, yeah there was more aggressive and harder hair metal (hate that term) but it was getting oversaturated with those poser bands who just wanted success and to pull girls. Edit: I also think that because the word metal was in there didn't give it any favours.
Hi Adam, yeah I’ve never felt there was a good term for the genre. I don’t like the term for the same reason as the word metal is too limiting. Like I would never use that for Great White. They’re a straight up rock band. But it’s what people now associate with the movement so we are kind of stuck with those names.
Eddie Trunk prefers the term 80s American Hard Rock. That is the most appropriate term in my opinion. Hair Metal and Glam Metal are later years terms and there were never used during that period. Anyway very good picks Brendon.
@@olegv.khlevniuk2391 It is insulting as a term I agree with you. It is insulting towards all those great musicians, guitar players, singers etc. and for the fans. The first time I've heard the term it was in a record shop from the sales person there and it took me some time to understand the meaning of it.
I know everyone has their opinions on this but it’s the name people know the genre by. And Glam Metal was absolutely used during the time period. It’s was used in all the music magazines of the day. I’m just not a fan of classifying all of the bands as “metal”. For me the glam part doesn’t bother me.
i can tell I'm getting too old. I was never into hair metal. In fact, I disliked most of it but I think for a person your age it was great. Every age bracket wants to have it's own music. I'm thinking of a lot of other bands, but they probably didn't have anything out in 1991. You're very informative though.
How about Yes’ 1991 album Union? Fantastic album which was actually my first Yes album, then Talk and on forward. Don’t know if you’re a Lynyrd Skynyrd fan but their album called 1991 is also excellent....and again my first album of theirs....can you see a tend here haha!
@@BrendonSnyder Actually the members of Yes are not that fond of Union. They players that participated in the tour loved the tour but not the album. Rick Wakeman called it the Onion album. Jon Anderson got together with the various producers and brought in a bunch of external musicians to play parts on it and in the process eliminated Steve Howe's parts almost entirely. Jimmy Haun replaced a lot of Steve's parts in Howe's "style" and I don''t think Steve ever forgot it. There's still bad blood between them for that and a number of other things Jon did. Anyway, there were a lot of extras brought in on the project and partially because of that it took a REALLY long time to put the album out and it also drove the cost of recording to up over a million dollars which was astronomical for those days. Then it didn't really sell all that well. I like the album too, but even when I first heard it I told my wife that something didn't sound quite right about it but I couldn't put my finger on it. I found out later. I guess that's what happens when you basically try to mash two separate bands together. It was ABWH and YESWEST being put on the same album and was strictly a ploy to make scads of money which didn't really pan out. The members pretty much all liked the tour though even though Howe really didn't like Rabin (but he doesn't really like anyone but him playing guitar on those Yes albums) and Bill Bruford was drolly sardonic about the whole thing. The most amazing thing about the album was that the two groups had just gotten done suing each other for several years over names and rights. How it actually got made with that in the background and getting everyones' band and individual managers on board was a miracle.
There were quite a few big albums. Glam still hung on but IMO 1991 was it’s last major year before everything changed and it was no longer the dominate form of music.
I would respectfully disagree. This is how I see it #1 Skid Row Slave to the Grind #2 Tesla Physchotic Supper #3 Great White Hooked #4 Tuff What comes around goes around #5 Danger Danger Screw It
Well, I think electric rattlebone is not better than the others. Dean Davidson did better performance when he was in Britny Fox. Thanks Brendon for your information. Good luck.
Skid Row Slave album is way too aggressive to be in the list..even though i liked it a lot. The themes and music is just closer to heavy metal with edge.😎
@@BrendonSnyder definitely..debut is much more streamlined assortment of hard rock or glam metal. Strangely i loved all 3 Seb era albums including the nu rock sounding Subhuman.
I disagree with you, dude. 1991 was totally time of new era, new music. Except the L.A.Guns - HOLLYWOOD VAMPIRES (all songs rockin' on that CD) the rest of the mentioned bands didn't released really honorable albums, because all they had maximum couple good songs to be a hit single on MTV and nothing more. Nothing about rock and roll life style. Heading to the commercial success glam metal became something about leather outfit with big blong hairy look of lead singer.
GREAT PICS!!! My top five from 1991:
1. Great White - Hooked
2. Enuff Z' Nuff - Strenght
3. D.A.D. Riskin' it all
Alice Cooper Hey Stoopid it's one of my alltime favorite albums
My top 5 1991
1.Alice Cooper - Hey Stoopid
2.Europe - Prisioners In Paradise
3.Enuff z'nuff - Strength
4.Saigon Kick - S\T
5.L.A. Guns - Hollywood Vampires
I love Alice Cooper no matter what he does! And Europe Prisoners In Paradise is a super underrated gem.
My 1991 Glam Metal List
1. Enuff Z’nuff - Strength
2. White Lion - Main Attraction
3. Tesla - Psychotic Supper
4. Mr Big - Lean Into It
5. Tyketto - Don’t Come Easy
I’m a big fan of the debut album by Tyketto. One of the best albums of the era IMO.
One of the best second wave glam metal bands was XYZ in my opinion. They didn't get much recognition but their self titled 1989 debut album and 1991 "Hungry" are kick ass
1. Skid Row "Slave to the Grind"
2. Enuff Z Nuff "Strength"
3. KingOfTheHill "KOTH"
4. Badlands "Voodoo Highway"
5. Tesla "Psychotic Supper"
Honorable mention: Mr. Big "Lean Into It"
GnR "Use Your Illusion 1" and Europe "Prisoners In Paradise"
Yes I recognize that Skid album is where they progressed beyond just being a glam metal band but I'll include it in my top 5 anyway .
Hey man your list your rules! I’m a fan of both King Of The Hill and Badlands as well!
Hollywood Vampires is one of my favorite records of all time
It’s a favorite of mine too. I go back to it more often than any other LA Guns album too.
Yes I have a thing too for people who don’t call it by the actual term used during the era itself.
Nice list!
Shotgun Messiah - Second Coming
Europe - Prisoners In Paradise (released just a day before Nirvana's 'Nevermind')
@@BrendonSnyder Shotgun Messiah's Second Coming, the whole album is great! It looks like you are going through my collection! 😆👍
My faves of 1991 (no order):
Badlands - Voodoo Highway
Bulletbiys - Freak Show
Mr. Big - Lean Into It
DLR - A Little Ain't Enough
Saigon Kick - Saigon Kick
The Scream - Let It Scream
White Lion - Main Attraction
Heavier stuff:
Armored Saint - Symbol Of Salvation
COC - Blind
Crimson Glory - Strange & Beautiful
Infectious Grooves - The Plague...
Metal Church - The Human Factor
Ozzy - No More Tears
Prong - Prove You Wrong
Warrior Soul - Drugs, God, & The New Republic
I love DLR, The Scream, and Saigon Kick! All of those in the first group would easily get honorable mentions.
@@BrendonSnyder I love Kix and LA Guns too. I prefer Blow My Fuse for Kix and the first 2 Guns albums, but their 91 albums are solid.
Badlands, one of the best bands ever.
Great list Brendon! I think that in 1992 and 1993 there were also great glam or hair metal albums. Winger, Steelheart....
Oh year 1992 through 1994 were still great years. It’s just 1991 was the last year these brands were at the top before the big fall.
Faster Pussycats 93 Album is a great one
Or Alleycat Scratchs 1993 debut
I’ve always liked the song Primal Scream too. It’s not often that a compilation gets a new song that becomes a genuine hit.
Kix are still Rock'n today 🤘
Ι dont think that KIX album is Glam metal..It is a sleaze hard rock top album...
Animals is my 2nd favorite by them. Stellar work.
@@BrendonSnyder Enuff' Z Nuff sounds too psychedelic to refer as Glam...
The first Skid Row album could be considered as a Hair Metal album. But Slave to the grind, man... It's so heavy, almost trashy . Can't be on this list for me...
My top five from 1991
1. Skid Row - Slave To The Grind
2. Guns N' Roses - Use You Illusion
3. Saigon Kick - Saigon Kick
4. The Scream - Let It Scream
5. Tesla - Psychotic Supper
Great list!!
That LA Guns album is Amazing from start to finish. Good list... New sub.
Hi Joey, thanks for subscribing! I’m glad to have you on board. Those first 3 LA Guns albums are outstanding and near perfection.
@@BrendonSnyder The first album was fantastic as well...
I just discovered your channel through this video and subscribed. Great stuff!
Thanks Brian, I appreciate it. Glad to have you on board! Just posted a video for 1992 if you’re interested, see link ruclips.net/video/WqvLoBGdaDs/видео.html
Van Halen- For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. The group that started it all..gotta give em props...back with a heavy hitting sound!!
Fantastic album but I don’t consider Van Halen glam Metal even though that’s their roots. Sort of the same with Bon Jovi. Both bands elevated out of the category. Just my opinion.
Ähm what???????most glam bands are influenced by 70s Rock Blues or late 60s Rock like Stomes ,The Who VH too but starts it just different
Yes, Slave to the Grind is my favorite of all of them..
My 5 favorite of 1991 from this genre (in alpha order):
Danger Danger - Screw It
Enuff Z'nuff - Strength
Scream - Let It Scream
Thunder - Backstreet Symphony
Tyketto - Don't Come Easy
Other 1991 hard rock albums of note:
Guns 'n' Roses - Use Your Illusion I & II
Ozzy Osbourne - No More Tears
RTZ - Return to Zero
David Lee Roth - A Little Ain't Enough
Van Halen - For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge
Slave to the Grind is the first heavy metal album to chart at number one!
I took full notes. I’ll certainly make a specific playlist out of it. Bite Down Hard is in my list of awesome albums I love from beginning to end. Johnny Dee is *perfect* meat-and-potatoes drumming! Try the sort-of rare excluded track “Turn On.”
Thank you Mr. Snyder!!
I’m glad you enjoyed the video! Bite Down Hard is a favorite of mine as there are no bad songs on that album.
Love your pics but manI was hoping you were going to put Danger Danger Screw it in there. Such a great album
That is a really good album too! 👍
Minha lista
1. Danger Danger - Screw It!
2.Tuff - What Comes Around Goes Around
3. White Lion - Mane Attraction
4. Shotgun Messiah - Second Coming
5. Tyketto - Don't Come Easy
Almost Got In: Use Your Illusion 2
I love all of those albums too!
A great album in this same year which I am surprised it's not mentioned, Tyketto!.
Yes great album, but with only 5 slots it was in tight competition.
Great list, Brendon! Another honorable mention could be Europe's "Prisoner's in Paradise," if put into that category. ~ Guido
Certainly! Great album by Europe.
One of my favorite album of all time
Really good album! Should be on his list!
Kik Tracee - No Rules (a masterpiece; one of the best albums of the decade)
XYZ - Hungry (excellent riffs, drumming, and production; very underrated band)
Enuff Z' Nuff - Strength (another masterpiece that took a while for me to recognize as such)
Bang Tango - Dancin' on Coals (not as heavy as Psycho Cafe, but funky and hook-laden; BT was unlike any other band at the time)
Tesla - Psychotic Supper (do I really need to say anything about Tesla?)
Note: Omitting Slave to the Grind (a masterpiece), because although Skid Row is generally considered glam metal, this album is most definitely not.
I love the Kik Tracee album as well and both XYZ and Bang Tango are great bands. There were so many good ones. Definitely no shortage of amazing bands back then.
XYZs hungry has a great guitar tone, right in your face!
Bite Down Hard is an outstanding album. One of my favorites.
I love that album so much! Always wish they had recorded a follow up in the early 90’s instead of disbanding.
Some deeper albums I’d include:
Don’t Come Easy - Tyketto
No Rules - Kik Tracee
Hellacious Acres - Dangerous Toys
Screw It - Danger Danger
McQueen Street - s/t
Asphalt Ballet - s/t
Hungry - XYZ
Fine selections , like them all . The KIX Girl Money can is a great collectable , never seen it before . I thought it was funny that you have to “ remove the top “ to get your girl money . Another good video idea from you , never know what topic will show up in notifications . Cheers .
Hi Tom! Yeah I try to keep the video ideas fresh and different from what most other channels are doing. Hopefully everyone continues to enjoy these sorts of things. Basically if they do well I do more and if they don’t then they take a backseat. So we’ll see! Glad you got a kick out of the Girl Money bank! Haha
Isnt that can great? What a perfect promo idea, I also had never seen it. That album would have been big if it had any push from the label.
Tuffs' What Comes Around Goes Around deserves a mention.
Good album indeed. True glam at its finest!
Great album! Poison wannabe's...
I can still remember when I heard "Congo Square" on the radio :)
To me, 1991/92 are the peak years of this genre.
That’s a great selection. That is “Classic Rock” in a sense! 30 years.
I remember listening to the particular KIX album back in the day. Loved the track hotwire and I even put tear down the wall on a mixtape.
I think I had that song on a mixtape too!!
That's a good album too.
TRES Cool les Glam HairBands!!!
Glam Metal! 🤘
Guns album?
Check out Sea Hags, War Babies, and Love/Hate.
Eclipsed from a sales perspective...not necessarily from a Tele to perspective
What do you think about Danger Danger’s second album “Screw It”
An absolutely classic! My fave Danger Danger song Monkey Business is on it.
On my top 5 best hair metal albums of all time. A masterpiece !
I really love White Lion as well and I’m an even bigger Mike Tramp fan.
Yeah these tracks were everywhere that summer but I don’t think most people knew it was LA Guns. The song Over The Edge is one of their best IMO.
@@BrendonSnyder I nerdily emailed you. All of us "old" 80's kids metal heads have to stick together!
That’s cool! I nerdily emailed you back.
This was a great episod, I been a great fan of the Kix and Great White so i wanna see more of this in the future.
Glad you enjoyed it Roger. I’ve got a whole bunch of Top 10 lists if you’re interested, see link to the playlist ruclips.net/p/PLXugCGslmwqnY5_Pk_X7-iiDYnl3-lD-H
I will take a look at them
Hollywood Vampires and Hooked were both SOOOOOO GOOD!!!!
Hi Peter!! I’m right there with you on both of those classics! Hooked is an outstanding album. Their best IMO.
Personally mine would be Tuff - What goes around comes around, Skid Row - Slave To The Grind, Lita Ford - Dangerous Curves, Harem Scarem - S/T, Tyketto - Don't Come Easy. Perhaps not all strictly Glam metal
I love both Lita Ford and Tyketto. They made excellent albums for 1991.
XYZ's "hungry" should have been on the list. That was a great fucking album, one of the best blues oriented glam metal and hard rock, some tracks are straight up heavy metal as well.
I love XYZ! Great band and great first two albums!
Great list! I would try to fit Tesla's Psychotic Supper in there also.
Great album indeed!
Roxxi-Drive It To Ya Hard was a great obscure glam metal from that era
There are still so many great undercover gems hiding out there.
IMO it was a great year. But yes, I plan to do earlier years as well. Thank you for subscribing!
I always considered 1993 the last great year of glam metal. KISS Alive III, Van Halen live, Aerosmith's Get a Grip, Coverdale Page.
Que buen canal 👏from argentina 🇦🇷👌
Thank you very much! 🙏
Records, not “vinyls.“ 😂
Totally digging your channel bro. Keep up the good work!
Duuuuuuuuude! I like calling them vinyls. Haha
1 Skid Row - Slave To The Grind
2 Badlands - Voodoo Highway
3 The Scream - Let It Scream
4 White Lion - Mane Attraction
5 D-A-D - Riskin’ It All
Like I said in the video I was going for the lesser known bands. That’s why I still talked about and mentioned Slave To The Grind. It’s not that they shouldn’t be #1, I just felt it was too obvious. Anyway, I just posted a new video for Top 5 Glam Metal Albums of 1992, see link if your interested ruclips.net/video/WqvLoBGdaDs/видео.html
i had to pause this twice to go hear the Kix “Girl Money” & Britny Fox “louder” songs
Great songs!
Hey Brendon, are you familiar with JULLIET debut album from 1990? Such a great obscure album.
I had the same thing happen at a dollar store and found Blue Tears. Fantastic album that today is really hard to find.
Have you heard of jillson - deadly girl? Don jillson is Tommy Paris. Excellent cd. And Britny fox did have another cd with Tommy Paris.
My fave. Are Guns n Roses UYI
LA Guns HV,Skid Rows Slave to the Grind,Shotgun Messiah 1991,
1991 The year that " Alternative" became Mainstream....Hair Metal Needed to Die. It Became Formulated, Boring and Predictable....
Rest in Peace Cinderella & Skid Row...Hello B52s & Concrete Blonde....
You just made me cry....😢 haha
@@BrendonSnyder Sorry Brother, No offense intended.. Having lived threw that era I always found it Funny that The " Popular" Music of the Time was Called " Alternative".... Alternative to What???
Great #1 choice! It looks like the cover is signed? I'm curious to know who signed it.
The whole band actually singed it. I had the cover unfolded for them to sign at the time.
@@BrendonSnyder Nice! I've met Phil and Steve, but Tracii is hard to get I've found!
It’s was an in store apparent in 2001 to support their reunion album Man In The Moon. They were all really gracious signing 27 albums for me. I brought all my LA Guns, solo, and related projects.
I think 1992 was a Great year Also. Great videos dude tanks
Thanks Antonio!
The last great year for music was 1992 imo.
1. Alice Cooper - Hey Stoopid
2. Skid Row - Slave to the Grind
3. Ozzy Osbourne - No More Tears
4. L.A. Guns - Hollywood Vampires
5. Europe - Prisoners in Paradise
I was referring to it being the last year before grunge took over. I actually think glam metal continued to to 1993 with some great releases.
You really need to add images and 10 second soundbites during editing so we can see/hear what you"re talking about.
That would be nice wouldn’t it. Know any editors?
@@BrendonSnyder I do not. Wish I could help.
The Crimson Idol by W.A.S.P. came out in 92 so I'd say 92 was the last great year
I’ve always thought of WASP as straight metal and not part of the Glam Metal scene. But also I didn’t mean that there weren’t still good releases after 1991. It was just the last year that these bands were on top and thought of a cool until Grunge took over and changed everything.
Tainted angel by Southgang was a very good album.
Great band!
Southgang - Tainted Angel & Bandlands - Voodoo Highway should not be over looked...
Nope definitely not overlooking them, they’re great too! Just too many good ones to mention them all.
@@dimitriosmetalos it's a derogatory term. When I was a kid it was just the next generation of rock n roll
Nice!
a great selection there was so much good stuff before the wheels came off rock. LA guns rule
LA Guns really should have been bigger than they were. Excellent band IMO. Three really solid albums one right after the other.
There were a few big albums in 1992 as well
There were quite a few big albums. Glam still hung on but IMO 1991 was it’s last major year before everything changed and it was no longer the dominate form of music.
@@BrendonSnyder Yes I agree
I would respectfully disagree. This is how I see it
#1 Skid Row Slave to the Grind
#2 Tesla Physchotic Supper
#3 Great White Hooked
#4 Tuff What comes around goes around
#5 Danger Danger Screw It
There is no wrong answer in my book. Music is all subjective to the listener and that’s what is great about it. Great list!
Shotgun Messiah's Second Coming
Yes great album!
The Idea from 1991 Hollywood 🦇s was come only because theyre original name and mostly because they knows theyre comes a new Dracula movie out in 1992
To me the years 1990 and 1991 were still the 80s
Well, I think electric rattlebone is not better than the others. Dean Davidson did better performance when he was in Britny Fox. Thanks Brendon for your information. Good luck.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wished it is top 10..bro.🤗
Skid Row Slave album is way too aggressive to be in the list..even though i liked it a lot. The themes and music is just closer to heavy metal with edge.😎
I agree it was just too heavy for me to include. But the debut was a glam metal classic.
@@BrendonSnyder definitely..debut is much more streamlined assortment of hard rock or glam metal. Strangely i loved all 3 Seb era albums including the nu rock sounding Subhuman.
More of a punk edge for mine
I agree too !
Slave To The Grind is better IMHO than any of your top five.
5 and 4 should have been slave and stoopid but 321 👍
Yeah so many good releases that year. The Top 5 could have gone any number of ways.
To each his own I guess, but I love the albums.
Cobra Dane
Wicked Teaze
Nitro
Jim Gillette
Desyre
The only one I recognize is Nitro. Since Jim Gillette is in Nitro and didn’t release a solo album in 1991 you should replace him with 5th choice.
@@BrendonSnyder 80's was the best era for Glam metal 🤘🏻
LA Guns!
🤘
Flesh and Blood ?
Poison’s Flesh and Blood came out in 1990, not 1991.
@@BrendonSnyder Ooops! That's true, sorry!
