I don't think anyone mentioned Mandocello when talking about the first album. Stunning song.
The first album will always be my fave. Nasty and tuneful at the same time.
If any Cheap Trick's fans have not seen it yet, Gibson released an awesome video last year about Rick Nielsen's guitar collection, it's amazing.
He reportedly owns over 1,900 guitars! I also liked that American Pickers episode with Rick Nielsen (selling his Audiomaster mixer formerly owned by John Entwistle)
Rick N. wrote " Hello There" on " IN COLOR" as a sound check song. Each instrument comes in one at a time. This was back when they were the opening band + quite often were not allowed time for their sound check. Pretty damn smart.
Except.... that's not true lol
A terrific episode per usual! I find myself listening to Cheap Trick's last 5 studio albums more than their classic 70's and early 80's stuff to be honest. Their last 5 studio albums are really well worth checking out for anyone who has not listened to stuff from them. They have been on a serious roll this late in their career.
😃👍
Thx for the tip!
Yep. Me, as well. Really good newer material.
I agree. As much as I love all their albums, their last five is equal to, or even better than their previous, classic albums. They just keep getting better!
My favorite band!

Long overdue ranking. They have so many great albums.
Cheers Gang. Just saw Cheap Trick last Thursday. Good to see Rick back. I like the addition of Robin Zander’s son on guitar and vocals. Extra punch and the apple doesn’t fall too far. My top Cheap Trick albums:

4) Cheap Trick 77
5) In Color
6) Cheap Trick 97
7) One on One

Goodnight Now
Rick wasn't on this one.
Huh?
Sorry, misread your post
No worries Pete. You Rock!
My personal top 10 Cheap Trick albums...
1. Heaven Tonight
2. In Color (actually a tie for #1)
3. All Shook Up
4. Dream Police
5. One On One
6. Next Position Please-if only for the inclusion of "Invaders Of The Heart" Best false ending song EVER!!
7. Cheap Trick 97 (The Red Ant/ Dead Ant album)
8. Cheap Trick (77 debut)
9. In Another World
10. Found All The Parts (ok, its an E. P. and it actually should rank higher on my list)
I like how they pay tribute to other bands here and there on Dream Police, like at the end of Need Your Love (Get it On, by T-Rex, Live Wire by AC/DC...) or the Aerosmith/Yardbird' Think About It guitar melody at the tail end of Gonna Raise Hell.
So many great albums! I was just listening to Whisky 1977 boxset this afternoon.
My 5 favs: Dream Police, Cheap Trick 1977, Heaven Tonight, All Shook Up, Lap of Luxury (I'm with you Steven!).
Monster, most of the later ones and In Color are up there too.
Cheers.
How is that Whiskey 77 performance? I hear it's quite outstanding....
@@dancalmpeaceful3903 I've only listened to discs 1 & 2 so far, but it's real good! The sound is great (although very trebly) and the performances are awesome and very very energetic (as you would expect from early CT). Some people complain about there being too many intermissions, but it's only like a minute or so twice on each cd (approx.), so I can easily put up with that. It comes in a really cool boxset with individual covers for each disc and a nice booklet. Great stuff! Cheers.
Great band, not exactly in my wheelhouse, but about my top 6 on this list manages to break through that barrier by sheer quality of the songs.
1. All Shook Up
2. Cheap Trick
3. In Color
4. Dream Police
5. Heaven Tonight
6. One On One
7. Standing On The Edge
8. Next Position Please
9. Cheap Trick '97
10. Woke Up With A Monster
I'm with Steven & Pete concerning gonna raise hell, I really like the song and most of the time I don't even notice how long it is, though I wouldn't cry about a couple of shaved minutes.
Standing on the edge.Top 5 album for me.Thanks Pete! Great video guys!
Excellent show! Cheap Trick is, to me, one of the most underrated bands of all time. Here they are after 40 years still as an opening band. They should be packing stadiums as a headliner as good as they are and they continue putting out amazing albums every few years where other bands of that era rely on nostalgia.
Great Episode! Here is my list.
1 - Cheap Trick '77
2 - Dream Police
3 - Heaven Tonight
4 - In Color
5 - All Shook Up
6 - Cheap Trick '97
7 - Woke Up With A Monster
8 - In Another World
9 - Rockford
10 - Bang Zoom Crazy Hello
Great show. I’m a big fan of Cheap Trick & it was a great panel which obviously love the band. They’re probably the band I’ve seen more than any other. Pretty much every time they come to the UK & they never disappoint. Controversially the debut isn’t in my top 10, which is:
10. Rockford
9. The Latest
8. Busted
7. In Another World
6. Heaven Tonight (some great songs but I prefer the Budokan versions)
5. Lap of Luxury (I really like the songs & it was exciting see them back in the spotlight).
4. All Shook Up
3. One on One
2. In Colour
1. Dream Police
Being from Wisconsin have seen Cheap Trick a few times.Saw them in the 70s backing up Leslie West and Queen that was the first time I saw them.I don't even think they had an album out yet
We saw them at The Brat Stop and Hay Makers. One time they played as The Randymen. I saw them open for RUSH on the 2112 tour in Chicago. Best Wishes
@@jimfritz2087 I remember when they played as the Randymen.
My top 5
1. Heaven Tonight
2. In Color
3. Dream Police
4. Cheap Trick debut (1977)
5. In another World
The very first of countless Cheap Trick shows I’ve seen was opening for KISS at the Fabulous Forum on 8/26/77…I was somewhat familiar with them just prior from seeing them repeatedly in Creem and Circus magazine but I was no way prepared for what I encountered that evening, they were so raw and sounded so purely amazing that they practically blew KISS off their own stage with zero staging or pyro of their own save for Rick Nielsen’s little stair/platform he would stand on at the time…that’s how good this band was especially during those first few years making the scene
SAME response April of 1977 as a sr at the Univ of Iowa, Iowa City at Hancher Aud, they laid waste to the place nearly on their turf, incredible, I'm 68 now will never forget it.
Top 3 Cheap Trick for me:
1) In Color
2) Heaven Tonight
3) Dream Police
My Pops bought me All shook up when I was in 5th grade in 2013 he told me just because “he saw it in the store and thought I needed it”. 🤍 It holds a special place in my heart more so than the rest but they do have so many good albums. I was particularly impressed with We’re all alright and in another world when they came out.
A tremendous Pops. Awesome 👍💯
Great ranking show one of my favorite bands. Cheap Trick were one of the bands that provided the soundtrack of my youth.
My list today:
1- Heaven Tonight
2- Dream Police
3- All Shook Up
4- In Color
5- Cheap Trick 77
6- Rockford
7- In Another World
8- Cheap Trick 97
9- Bang, Zoom,Crazy…Hello
10- The Latest
One weird thing. Was this show shot along time ago and just aired today? Reason the Rod Stewart/Cheap Trick tour was last summer. I saw the show at Hershey Park fantastic concert Pete talks about it being next summer. Cheers
Hi Captain. Rod Stewart/Cheap Trick are going back out again this coming summer. I was the show at Hershey Park as well and I agree that was a fantastic show!
@@JohntheMusicNut Thanks for the clarification good sir! Cheers from the Captain.
You're very welcome Captain!
Great show gents! Awesome band with a raft of fantastic, infectious tunes played like no one else could truly do... Saw them first on the day of my Aunt's wedding Dec. 8, 1978 televised on the At Budokan shows before that album ever came out. They floored me! I went out and purchased their first 3 albums the next day $5.99 ea. back then...Wow!! No idea how or why they were on local TV in Toronto for that concert back then but as a 15 year old Kiss fanatic, man what an eye opener they were! Tom was always my fave looking so cool with the 12 string Bass (huh what?!)... My Top Ten would be: 1. In Color 2. Heaven Tonight 3. Dream Police 4. Cheap Trick Debut 5. Next Position Please 6. Lap Of Luxury (Just for "All Wound Up" alone) 7. Standing On The Edge 8. All Shook Up 9. Rockford 10. Cheap Trick 1997. Must mention as Jim pointed out "Everything Works if You Let It" from the Found All The Parts EP and Reach Out from the Heavy Metal Soundtrack are two of their best songs ever as well!! Thanks again guys...Keep Rockin'
Great commentary by all on a great band! My top ten- 10.Bang, Zoom, Crazy. 9.Cheap Trick ‘97. 8.Next Position Please. 7.Rockford. 6.One on One. 5.All Shook Up. 4.Cheap Trick ‘77. 3.In Color. 2.Heaven Tonight. 1.Dream Police. #1 was never in doubt, it was their first album that I heard and bought. Dream Police is pure power pop/hard rock (whatever you label it) brilliance! I even love Need Your Love and all 9+ minutes of Gonna Raise Hell. The House is Rocking is overlooked but great.
My top three favorite Cheap Trick albums are: 1. “At Budokan”, 2. “Heaven Tonight”, and 3. “In Color.”
That being said, I first heard about Cheap Trick from “Lap of Luxury”, then, I bought (and enjoyed) a “greatest hits” collection , now I enjoy the late 70’s albums. I would be open to try the post- “Lap of Luxury” albums.
1)in black and white. 2) heaven tonight. 3) lap of luxury ( mostly because of all wound up) 4) dream police. 5) s/t 77. 6) all shook up. 7) woke up with a monster. 8) s/t 1997 9) Rockford 10) special one
Thanks, gents, for your time in ranking your Top 10 from Cheap Trick. Haven't really listened to much of the catalogue in a long time but the usual SoT influence now has me reaching for some to play. Going to start with Dream Police so let's call that the top personal pick - at least as of today. Highly enjoyable discussion show. Thanks again to Hack, Steven, Jim, Martin and you, too, Pete.
Thank you guys, for all your great picks !!
All the damn time.
My Top 10, Cheap Trick Picks:
1. Heaven Tonight
2. In Color
3. Lap of Luxury
4. In Another World
5. Cheap Trick - 1977
6. Dream Police
7. Rockford
8. All Shook Up
9. Cheap Trick (1997)
10. The Latest

Life is better with music.
Nice video...Rockford is an excellent album.
Cheap Trick is my family's absolute favorite band. Thanks for doing a Cheap Trick show!
My top 10 CT albums:
10. Rockford (a fantastic light and airy power pop album)
9. The Latest (Rockford with a slightly more demented spirit. Great songs all around)
8. Woke Up With a Monster (the return to form album harkening back to the classic first 5)
7. In Color (power pop perfection. Minus IWYTWM which is unlistenable with its weird country twang)
6. Heaven Tonight (the first big production that allows the songs to pop out)
5. Cheap Trick '97 (Woke Up was the return to form, this one brought back the demented spirit of the debut)
4. Special One (Cheap Trick back at its most experimental, and thus full of greatness. This album is very misunderstood)
3. All Shook Up (great experimental album that easily pays off)
2. Dream Police (one of their best produced album stacked with bangers)
1. Cheap Trick '77 (best debut album of all time. Raw, edgy, and with a demented spirit only Cheap Trick can bring)
I do love all of the Cheap Trick albums and listen to them all, but those are my top 10 albums by them.
Great guests, Great band, great episode! And let‘s be honest here: we all love it when Stephen is being honest.😅

It is clear that the first 4 albums on this list are from the 70s.
Thank you to Pete Pardo and his guests for this excellent program. Until the next show!
Say what you will about the Flame, the album it came off is solid - Never Had a lot to Lose, All Wound Up, Ghost Town, Let Go, Don't Be Cruel. It's wayyyyy overproduced but I love it
I do too!
I never really thought about it, but YEAH, Poison did steal She's Tight riff for Talk Dirty ( I'm assuming that's the one you mean) lol
I thought 1.5 hours would be too long to listen to Cheap Trick talk, but I was wrong. Loved this video because I love Cheap Trick. Good job guys!
1. I agree with Jim when he mentioned the highs and lows of Dream Police. I ranked my top 50 CT songs and 3 of my top 5 appear on this album, yet I question if this is my favorite album of theirs. If not, it's #2. BTW, those 3 songs are Dream Police, Way of the World and Voices.
2. I noticed that all hosts coincidentally ranked Rockford at #5. Weird. Jim placed it at #10.
3. I am very pleased to see the love for Cheap Trick (1997) as it appeared somewhere on everyone's list. This is a very underrated album and would probably rank 3rd in my list, maybe 4th. Additionally, I love One on One appeared on two lists as this was my first full album exposure to Cheap Trick playing it nearly incessantly on my Walkman back in '82.
YES! Been wanting this one for a long time!
Jim Thank You! That new Fuzzbubble is amazing! Reminds me of Jellyfish and The Ravyns...2 of my favorite bands.
Thank you 😊
Another excellent show! Good job, men. “Stop This Game” is my favorite Cheap Trick song, so it was great to see it get so many mentions. Cheap Trick have some smoking singles and delicious deep album tracks, too!
Cheers from Noo Yawk, ova heyah!
Rock Out and Prog On!
🤘🐸🤘
Great job guys. Love this band. My top three:
3) Cheap Trick '97
2) Heaven Tonight
1) Cheap Trick '77
The debut is also a top ten of my entire collection. Not sure if it was mentioned, but there is a very cool Steve Albini engineered re-recording of In Color that's floating around.
Great show guys. To me Cheap Trick has always been a solid rock band with a really good catalog that seems like they don’t get mentioned or recognized as much as other top bands. It’s a shame because they all are pretty damn good musicians and Robin’s voice is super solid. I didn’t realize you were just doing top 10. I ranked the whole catalog. So here you go.
#20 The Doctor
#19 Special One
#18 Cheap Trick 97
#17 Christmas Christmas
#16 The Latest
#15 Rockford
#14 Next Position Please
#13 One on One
#12 Busted
#11 Woke Up With a Monster
#10 Standing on the Edge
#9 Lap of Luxury
#8 In Another World
#7 We’re All Alright
#6 Bang,Zoom, Crazy Hello
#5 All Shook Up
#4 In Color
#3 Cheap Trick 77
#2 Dream Police
#1 Heaven Tonite
The Doctor , Special One I don’t like at all. My # 15 thru #18 I haven’t listened to very much. With a few more listens maybe some of those would grow on me a little more. As of now they sit were they sit. My top 10 was really no question. My #1 has always been #1. I just love everything about that album. I will say Dream Police is really a #1.5 instead of #2. Hahaha. Once again great show!
The combo with the two motorcycles those are my friends bikes we were at the adventures in in college point queens and they came by and asked if they could take a picture with the bikes
On topic....one of my favorite Cheap Trick tracks is their cover of the Moves Brontosaurus (the Move is my third favorite band of all time). A little off topic but you mentioned it....The company handling the Fuzzbubble CD is doing them a great diservice...the cost is over $21 mainly because of outrageous shipping charges...I hope they get around to having it available elsewhere;;;;needs distribution anyway.
Cheap Trick may be the next band I do a deeper dive on. I have the first five studio albums and Budakon and the Essential compilation, but I'm looking to get some after 1980.
The live Music For Hangovers & On Top Of The World are great
Great episode! Cheap Trick was HUGE in Chicago in the late 1970s. I was 21 when the debut came out. They are local heroes.
1. All Shook Up
2. Cheap Trick
3. Next Position Please
4. Cheap Trick (Red Ant)
5. Dream Police
No one's talking about the awesome song on "The Heavy Metal" soundtrack - "Reach Out" featuring the "Captain Stern" sequence....even though it has synths....it still rocks. People tell me the Trick song on the "Top Gun " soundtrack is supposed to be good...
My top 10:
10: The Latest
9: Cheap Trick (1997) I have the edition with the cover of The Move's Brontosaurus CD single glued to the jewel case.
8: One on One
7: In Color
6: Next Position Please
5: Rockford
4: All Shook Up
3: Cheap Trick (1977)
2: Heaven Tonight
1: Dream Police
Excellent episode. I had a cassette of Live at Budokan back in the late 70s in junior high school. Incredible, classic live album etched into my young psyche. The version of I Want You to Want Me on Budokan is superior
Jim Bacchi. I totally agree with you about underproduced albums. I LOVE UFO, but I feel that so many of their early studio albums were underproduced. The first I heard of them was "Strangers in the Night" when I was 10 in 1980. The first studio album I bought was Lights Out which sounded great, then I started buying earlier ones and they sounded like stripped-down (production-wise) great albums.
Interestingly, I first saw Trick on the "All Shook Up" tour and UFO opened......F-king fantastic show- BOTH bands rocked! (love UFO!). Seen Trick 6 or 7 times now and saw UFO three times....
Great episode guys!
When you put the s/t 97 CD in your player, immediately hold down REWIND and there are bonus materials before the album starts
Great that you finally do a CT ranking!!
There first 4 albums and budakon was there absolute best !!!! But next position please, standing on edge, and lap of luxury were good 80s albums, 97 album was great, and Rockford was also a great album !! They are still rocking strong today....great underated band .
Definitely an episode that I've been waiting for! I was pleasantly surprised to see my own personal favorite "All Shook Up" get some love. After taking years of abuse over that record, I feel some level of validation that Martin placed it at number one, and that some others put it in their Top Ten. I've always thought that if they'd opened Side Two of ASU with "Everything Works If You Let It' (also produced by George Martin) and left "Who D'King?" off altogether that it would have been absolute perfection.
My Top Ten:
All Shook Up
Dream Police
Heaven Tonight
Debut
In Another World
In Color
Bang Zoom Crazy Hello
Next Position Please
Standing On the Edge
CT '97
i love a lot 2006´s Rockford !
saw them on the love gun tour as well. the corral calgary. bought in color next day.
Cheap Trick might be the most undervalued great band in the history of rock. Even now, after all these terrific albums and all these hit songs -- not to mention all the big-name musicians who credit them as either an influence or a favorite -- they're still touring as an opening act half the time. Maybe they're just too difficult to pigeonhole for them to bust into the pantheon.
Anyway, my top 10 albums:
10. Next Position Please
9. Rockford
8. Lap of Luxury
7. Bang Zoom Crazy Hello
6. In Another World (still making music like this at this late stage of their career? who does that?)
5. One on One
4. self-titled, 1977
3. In Color
2. Dream Police
1. Heaven Tonight
And to be honest, I could have any of their albums except for The Doctor and Special One (well, and the Christmas album, which is fine for what it is, but... it's a Christmas album) toward the bottom of my Top 10, I love this band and their discography that much.
Pete you are awesome. Love your channel. Being the same age we very similar opinions and experiences. When Budokan came out I wanted to see them so bad in Chicago, but I was too young and parents would not let me go. 12 or 13. I wanted to take trains and stuff, but I was darn fool. They did broadcast it on the radio live and I recorded it, but the tape disappeared on me over the years. I did finally get to see them twice.
1. Dream Police
2. In Color
3. One on One
4. Cheap Trick
5. Heaven Tonight
Lol. Ditto / 👍💯
1. Heaven Tonight
2. In Color
3. Dream Police
4. One On One
5. Next Position Please
6. Cheap Trick (1977)
7. We’re All Alright
8. Bang Zoom Crazy Hello
9. In Another World
10. Woke Up With A Monster
Great episode, Pete. Here's to more album rankings with multiple guests.
Great episode, a long time coming. My top five; 1. The Latest - great songs throughout and Robin has never sounded better. 2. Heaven Tonight 3. In Color. (just edges out the debut).
I only know about 12 to rank anyway, but I've been wanting to scavenge the rest for a while now...
1. In Color- short, but it's pure fun and probably has the most creative juice in it, with a few peculiar songs.
2. Next Position Please- this one takes a while to warm up but it essentially amounts to a truck-load of good songs, making it possibly a good album and a half. It really does get progressively better with each track.
3. Heaven Tonight- tough call for #3; some might even be better but I'm really into side one and Surrender might be my actual favorite from the band.
4. '77 debut- Might be the perfect Cheap Trick album top to bottom, with Rick Nielsen playing how I want him to most of the time... I kind of like Cheap Trick more in their good humor though, and this one is maybe in a darker, sarcastic phase
5. Dream Police- I thought I'd be ranking it lower, but there are essential songs here I can't ignore, particularly the title track, This House is Rockin' (monster riff!!!) and I Know What I Want. I never want to skip the long ones too, even though I've often gone into them skeptical. With a little more work it could have been #1, because I think it sounds addictive too, production-wise.
6. All Shook Up- Kinda sounds like the true follow-up to In Color, with some similar qualities, but maybe missing that peculiarity. Still one of the best to rock out to, however.
7. Standing on the Edge- A little different- maybe lacking that humor, but I don't see a completely different band and I appreciate the effort. Some of the "failed" hits here might actually be better songs than people give them credit for. Rock All Night always gets a top spot on a playlist, like a song Def Leppard got stolen from them.
8. One on One- It kinda sits between All Shook Up and Next Position Please in terms of style, so I don't dislike it. Out of the classic run it does have the most generic songs, however... With the exception of If You Want My Love, which is going a little beyond just being a good ballad, and achieving a late 60's level of beauty that's VERY uncommon in the 80's.
9. 1997 s/t- I found this to be an ok transposition of Cheap Trick into the 90's. Spotty at times, but it sounds like Cheap Trick songs, almost as if it were old demos produced now.
10. Woke Up With a Monster- Best album cover, possibly? There's some unacceptable behavior here (cough- Ride the Pony- cough). As much as I could have hated it though, I pretty much got the standard amount of enjoyment I get from most of the albums. Definitely not gonna be top 10 when I get to know the rest, but only time will tell...
DREAM 👮♂️/ 7️⃣9️⃣ is 💯 my no 1.
Thank you to the entire panel on this Sunday am. Much enjoyed/ appreciated. Great 👍 stuff gang 👍💯
My top 5
1. Debut
2 Heaven Tonight
3. Dream Police
4. In color
5 Cheap Trick 97
Great job guys I agree with Pete about Rockford what a great recordthat's when I really got back into cheap trick and adding to my collection always a fan as a kidI think we're Tom left and they got a little too commercial seen him a few times saw them in Albany a few years ago and they were so f****** loud still
Good episode guys.
1. Cheap Trick (1977)
2. Heaven Tonight
3. In Color
4. We're All Alright!
5. Dream Police
6. Cheap Trick (1997)
7. One on One
8. In Another World
9. All Shook Up
10. The Latest
One of my Top 3 favourite bands, so this wasn't easy. Special One, Busted and In Color were never going to get into the top 10 but any of the others could be in there on any given day. Special One I really dislike, whereas In Color has great songs but it frustrates me as I just want everything to have more grit and energy. I like Busted but it doesn't have the CT personality that others have.
1) Cheap Trick 1977
2) Cheap Trick 1997
3) Dream Police
4) Heaven Tonight
5) One on One

5. We're Alright
4. Heaven Tonight
3. In Color
2. Cheap Trick (1st album)
1. Dream Police
Thanks for the ranking guys. I heven't really istened to many Cheap Trick albums. I own 2 or 3. In control, The flame and the latest one. Perhaps I also have the one before that, I have to look my cd stock. It is an eye opener for me.
Great job, guys. I don’t know why the commercial era of Lap of Luxury and Busted is so much hated, but Busted remains my favorite. I admit, however, I never listened to the first five albums. I will do that now. Thank you all.
My favourites always be One on One and Next Position Please, yes I actually like Dancing The Night Away, didn't realise at the time it was a Motors cover, until I pick up a number of the Motors album. Brought both of these CT albums at the same time for £1.99 each at Woolworths. With The Latest pretty sure I pick this up as a freebie, when buying a copy of Classic Rock magazine, from Asda, seriously!
Cheap Trick '97 is so underrated. Ranks right alongside the first four for me. Desperately needs a vinyl reissue as it has never been put on wax.
I agree with Jim. The more poppy and Beatlesque Cheap Trick are the better I like them. Maybe the reason I hold Next Position Please so highly. I can get my heavy stuff from other bands.
Also, the new Fuzzbubble is my favorite album of 2022.
And .... I always thought Rick Neilson looked like Art Carney!
Thank you 😊
Art Carney! Yes !
I agree with the poppy and Beatlesque comment....but I do love the hard rocking first 4 albums. I've never heard "Next Position"......so I will have to get it!
Been waiting for this one for forever !!
gonna raise hellll...one of my fav and not too long ...
I must say Guitar Hack looking good in that Rush T-shirt. Yay I’m so excited y’all are doing this! This was my first concert in 1982 the One on One tour! Thanks to my amazing parents for letting me explore all music and to making my first concert so memorable.
I love your videos. Cheers from Portugal
The respect is evidenced by the legendary producers 79 to 85: Tom Werman, George Martin, Roy Thomas Baker, Todd Rundgren, Jack Douglas.

And their 2 songs o the Heavy Metal Soundtrack are great as well.
I think I'm the only one who loves Busted. Love that album!! Their later albums are actually very very strong. Hope they keep making albums because they're still going strong!
Brian Kramp has a great book about the early days of Cheap Trick called This Band Has No History.
And yes Martin by the time they were supporting KISS in the summer of ‘77 they were touring for ‘In Color’
George Martin also produced Little River Band around '80/'81
He produced America as well and had huge hits
