Its my favorite Ozzy album. The songs are great and the guitar work by Jake is phenomenal!!!! The whole atmosphere of the album still takes me back to when I heard it for the first time!

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks the albums with Jake E Lee are better than the ones with Zack. I only recently started listening to Ozzy and I've been obsessed with his music since. My musical background is mostly in rap, r&b, Jamaican stuff, African pop, and some indie/alternative stuff. For me, his first 4 albums are top, followed closely by No More Tears
The man who glued the first three album together and made them so special was Bob Daisley. Without Bob the magic was gone and Ozzy never got it back.

Well, more specifically - RANDY RHOADS with Bob Daisley was the Magic combination - period, end of Story.
That makes no sense at all. The two first solo albums sound nothing like the 2 Jake E. Lee albums or the first 2 with Zakk. That's because those songs ARE those guitar players. Randy's style is so prevalent in the songs. Same with Jake and Zakk. Not to say Bob Daisley didn't do shit because he did though.
He also was on No More Tears, No Rest for the Wicked and wrote solid chunks of Ultimate Sinner. Having said he didn't have the same input as he had on the thirst tree albums

Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman are Ozzy's best because of the other three guys in the band--Bob Daisley, Lee Kerslake and, of course, Randy Rhoads. There was an alchemy created by those four guys in the band that Ozzy could never recapture after he started listening to evil Sharon who began helming Ozzy as a commodity. Sharon destroyed that lightning in a bottle when she broke up Blizzard of Ozz as a band. Ozzy has spent the subsequent years trying to recapture the magic that came from all four pieces of a rare puzzle. For a brilliant insider look at those first two albums, (and a whole lot more) everyone should read Bob Daisley's fantastic autobiography "For Facts Sake."

No More Tears is the reason why I love Ozzy Osbourne. It was the first time hearing his incredible voice and music. The album is a masterpiece.

How can anyone not like You Can't Kill Rock and Roll??? I cant stand this automatic hatred for ballads. Its by far one of Ozzy's best songs ever.

BTW: Jake E Lee is the overlooked guitarist in Ozzy’s career. He’s the second best guitarist after Rhoads of course. Nobody gives him a ton of credit. Bark at the Moon and Ultimate Sin are masterpieces

I’ve always personally felt like Jake was better than Randy. Not by much, but I’ve always preferred him in terms of riffs, solos and tone

The Ultimate Sin is my favorite Ozzy album. I love the production, Jake's guitar tone, Randy's incredible pounding drumming, might also be Ozzy's best vocal performance on a record, next to Sabotage and all of the songs are perfect, with only one filler (Never Know Why). His best by far! Ordinary Man is definitely the worst, its just an embarrassment. Also, am I the only one who loves "No Bone Movies"?? Here's my ranking:

It's a bit too radio friendly, I think. The first 3 albums were more of a creative output with much more courage and experiments. And the biggest mistake Ozzy made with "The Ultimate Sin": He took Metallica as his opener on tour. They ripped Ozzy's band to pieces. That when they became great. And for Ozzy it went down, unfortunately. For me it's the first 3 albums, after that, hm, a few songs here and there, but the rest?.... Sorry, just an opinion...

I like No Bone Movies, but it is my least favorite song from the Blizzard Of Ozz album. The B side songs You Looking At Me Looking At You and You Said It All are way better in my opinion. One of them should have been on the album instead in my opinion.

I'd put Bark over Sin but yeah, after the first four and Speak/Tribute the rest is garbage.
That's exactly how I'd put the first 4 albums. I think Ultimate is a much better album than Bark At The Moon. Bark has probably one of the best metal songs ever, but after that I feel the album is mostly filler. I love every song on Ultimate, and the album just has more energy than Bark.

@@johnnelson3665 Their image might be glam on that album, but the songs are killer, traditional Heavy Metal, also its Ozzy's most socially conscious album. They had a crisp mid 80s production on that album (well it was recorded in 1986), but the songs dont lack in heaviness when played live. The idea that an album becomes "hair metal" if it has a mid 80s production is ridiculous, by that logic all mid 80s Pop albums should be labelled as "hair metal" 😀

Jake E Lee has said in several interviews that he would love to go back and remix Ultimate Sin, because they weren’t happy with how it was mixed and all the triggers and keyboards added to the original mix when it was released.
I would love to hear that!
We should push for it, it’s had such poor re-release history due to the lawsuits, etc.

My rankings would be almost exactly the same except I would flip flop Down to Earth and Ozzmosis. I think Diary, Blizzard and No More Tears are all exceptional.

4 Tribute
The Ultimate Sin if by far my favorite Ozzy album. It is criminally underrated. WAY better than Bark at the Moon. It's heavy, catchy, with amazing guitar work, great singing by Ozzy and a ton of hooks. Secret Loser? Lightning Strikes? Shot in the Dark? Killer of Giants? The Ultimate Sin? NOT hair metal.
Agree. Bark at the Moon and Ultimate Sin are so damn different, I think you're bound to really like one and not the other. Martin was the opposite and prefers Bark.
I like both, placing Bark right above Sin. I think the guitar work was a little more interesting on Bark. I think the songs were more commercially successful on Sin which doesn't necessarily make them bad. They were a little more formulaic, though. Sin has a lot of great sing-a-long songs. Bark has a lot of listen-to songs.

Agreed. Songs on Ultimate Sin are your traditional Heavy Metal Songs, when played live, they lack nothing in heaviness, in fact its Ozzy's most socially conscious album. They were trying to get a crisp production with the then available studio technology,nothing to do with their hairstyles. hair metal is a made up term anyway...
Ozzy sang great. Underrated for sure. Like with Randy if only we could have gotten that third album with Jake it would have taken all comers. I recall an interview where Jake said something like “Seasons” from the first Badlands album was presented to Ozzy and he just couldn’t loosen up enough for that. It’s a shame because by “No More Tears” he was allowing little bits of slide guitar and other colors that Jake could have / should have been able to bring on a final project. “Sin” was a bit too clean and conservative but that’s what us kids dug in 1986! It worked. Sold a ton. Very much a period piece.

Ozzmosis number 9? Come on, that album contains many good songs such as Perry Mason,I just want you, See you on the other side,Tomorrow,Thunder Underground,etc. I would put it over Bark at the moon honestly.

Ozzmosis, is my fav Ozzy album, it was also my first after I got into black Sabbath.
Michael Beinhorn really pushed Ozzy to his limit on this one, so much that Ozzy said he'd never make another album again.

Great show. Have to disagree, though, on You Can't Kill R&R and Tonight. Those songs have 2 of the best guitar outros in rock history.
Love No More Tears. Top notch song writing and arrangements. Zakk's solos are jolly outstanding.

I disagree. The first five studio albums from Ozzy in my opinion are MASTERPIECES. I love about half of No More Tears, and 2 songs from Ozzmosis. Everything that came out after No More Tears was a major huge drop down in my opinion. The last album Bob Daisley was involved with for Ozzy is No More Tears. In my opinion that is one huge reason why it was a huge drop down.

Wonderful song... the notes that Randy puts between the chords are killer. I do think that the recording should have been edited (or a shorter take), as it starts to stagger at the finish of its 7 minute length.
Despite claims otherwise from a certain camp, Bob Daisley did a huge amount of the music and lyrics writing on the earlier albums. I wrote this before I got to the end!
Diary of a madman has always been my favorite. Love side two of that album.

When I was a kid in the 80's I quickly became a lover of all things horror (thanks primarily to the Thriller music video). So when I was at the record store and saw Ozzy's album covers for the first time, that was the beginning of something special. I decided on The Ultimate Sin because I thought the cover looked like 2 demons in hell, how could it not be great? When I heard the opening riff for "The Ultimate Sin", I became a metal fan. The riff sounded so much darker and heavier than the Def Leppard and Bon Jovi that I was used to. And near the end of the song where Ozzy pronounces the word "sin" for the last time and does it in that black-metal sounding voice, as a 7-year-old kid, that voice scared the shit out of me. I was convinced Ozzy was either possessed or he was literally Satan. And right after that Randy comes in with the double-bass, which was the first time I ever heard that before. Double bass, an insanely heavy riff and Ozzy's demonic voice made me a metal fan. Diary is my favorite Ozzy album, but The Ultimate Sin is Ozzy's Rodney Dangerfield album that should get more respect.
Completely disagree with both of your takes on Ultimate Sin. Fucking awesome album from start to finish and has aged amazingly well. Jake E kicks ass, Randy as well (best drummer for Ozzy IMO). Much better than No More and more heavy than Bark. #2 for me is No Rest. Very heavy, Zack feels unleashed on this album whereas he's held back on future albums.
Ultimate sin rocks
When they were talking about Bark at the Moon, I'm surprised they didn't talk about the writing credits for the album. Apparently after Zakk was let go after Black Rain, Jake E. Lee was asked if he might be interested in re-joining Ozzy. He said he just wanted writing credits for Bark at the Moon, and then never heard back. It's too bad Jake will never get the writing credits or recognition that he deserves.
It's interesting that Martin said The Ultimate Sin is almost unlistenable for him, but still ranked it higher than No More Tears. I saw a video from a couple years ago with Martin ranking the Ozzy albums and if I remember right he put The Ultimate Sin at #8. I guess it's grown on him a little, even if he hates the production.
i also thought it was odd he said it was "unlistenable" and ranked it as high as he did.

Bark at the Moon is also my favorite Ozzy album! I love the sound of the album, a lot of the songs here are some of my favorite Ozzy songs, and Jake's solos are some of the best solos I have ever heard!
No more tears was the pinnacle. The most underrated was the early live one Talk of the Devil/Speak of the Devil.
When I bought it in the day of release I was amazed that if I closed my eyes I was not able to tell that this was not Sabbath themselves, such was the quality of the playing and recording.
Bark At The Moon is the third album I ever got as a little kid back in the mid 80's. It changed my life to how I have been listening to music in the past 35 years. It still sounds as phenomenal as it did 35 years ago when I first listened to it. I got the CD in three different formats, the original, the first remastered version, and the second remastered version. The first remastered version has Spiders as a bonus song and the second remastered version has Spiders and One Up The B Side as bonus songs. I have always also loved Diary Of A Madman album big time also. I have always loved Diary Of A Madman album way more than the Blizzard Of Ozz album. No Rest For The Wicked and The Ultimate Sin album has always been amazing albums to me. I have always loved the majority of the No More Tears album and about half of the Ozzmosis album. I did not know for a long time that Bob Daisley was involved in every Ozzy Osbourne album from the beginning all the way up to the No More Tears album. It made alot of sense to me when I found that out because since then I have understood why everything that came out after No More Tears was not even close to how amazing the first six albums are. My ULTIMATE dream for a long time now has been for Ozzy Osbourne to get both Jake E Lee and Bob Daisley back for his last album and last official tour. I know that it will never happen, but it would have been awesome if it did.
Man it was cool reading your story of bark at the moon cause my story is almost the same here's the quick version. It was mid December 1983 and my best friend at the time said hey u heard the new ozzy and I was like no and he said check this out I took it from my older brothers cassette collection and he preceded to put it in my boom box and cranked the volume and the riff to bark at the moon began playing and from the first 2 notes I knew I had found myself. Then the next he brought over quiet riot metal health and a few days later he brought over motley crues shout at the devil and from that day forward the crue was my favorite band them and ozzy of course well at least until both bands became posers and sold out I only listen to true heavy metal that's why dio is my favorite has been since 1984. But ozzy and the crue is why I got into heavy metal so long ago and I'm still the same today so thanks ozzy and motley crue only the 80s crue and ozzy is what I listen to and the 94 crue and the last ozzy record I liked was black rain can't understand why so many hate it to me the new ozzy album and scream and down to earth sucked I don't listen to those at all. Oh ozzmosis was half good oh and three songs from black rain sucked. Sorry for rambling I hope ozzy makes 1 more album I hope he don't go out with the new album that would suck.
@@joelfranco7218 thank you. That is very ironic that you mentioned Quiet Riot's Metal Health album because that is the first Hard Rock/ Heavy Metal album I ever got. That album is where it all started for me at five years old back in 1983. I also agree with you that Motley Crue in the 80's and the 94 self titled album are the only Motley Crue albums that I love also. I am also a huge massive fan of Ronnie James Dio. Everything that he ever did was PHENOMENAL!! I love Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and his band Dio big time. I only got to see him two times live. The first time was back in 1998 on Dio's Angry Machines tour with Love/Hate as the opening band and the second and last time was in 2002 on his Killing The Dragon tour with both the Scorpions and Deep Purple as the Coheadliners. I got to meet Ronnie James Dio back in 1998 after his show was over and he is still the coolest musician I have ever met. Just like you I am a huge Heavy Metal fan. I admit that I am a major nerd when it comes to Heavy Metal music. I have over 2000 CD's that I have been collecting since the early 90's and I still buy them. I know that I could listen for free from RUclips, Spotify, Apple music, or any other digital format, but I can't stand how music sounds from them. I heard a few songs from Ozzy's recent album and it really is horrible. I hope that it is not his final album. I have not listened to Black Rain since it came out. I might have to give it another listen.

I'm a fan of Jake and Zakk, but the guitarist in me could not put another album above Randy. I guess: 1. DoaM 2. Blizzard, though I think Blizzard is, weirdly, becoming under-rated. Randy _may_ have raised his bar with DoaM, but he was fully-formed and outstanding on Blizzard.
I respect that people like Zakk Wylde, but he uses the worst guitar tone I've ever heard! There's a reason I don't really like the albums he's on & why I don't listen to BLS
@@metalmelodies6718 i think his best tone was No Rest For The Wicked and i totally agree about BLS. Sonic Brew and Stronger Than Death are horrendous tones even though i do really like the albums. The production is also a wall of noise lol

As a longtime Ozzy fan I agree. Albums after that have some good songs but the last great album was indeed Ozzmosis.
Slippy Jones I hate saying it but I agree. Once Sharon stripped then songwriting from the guittist, it was truly a solo act and not a band.

It's odd you can almost rank the albums from best to worst, in the order they were released.
Ultimate Sin is an underrated album. It may lack a little of the aggression from the earlier albums, but to me it's the most "fun" album he ever made, if that makes any sense. Almost all of the songs are super catchy and I think it really grows on people. As for the simplistic drums... sometimes less is more.
My number one favourite Ozzy Osbourne album is No More Tears. I LOVE every single song off the album and Road To Nowhere is my all time favourite song
I grew up listening to Ozzy from when I was like 5 years old and I’d have to agree. No More Tears brings me right back to my childhood, and now at almost 18 it’s still one of my favorite albums ever. I still listen to a lot of Ozzy’s other stuff, even up to Down To Earth. But Blizzard of Oz through No More Tears will always hold a special place. Randy, Jake, and Zakk’s guitar playing was the inspiration for me wanting to play guitar early on, and still continues to in my playing today.

I’m 15 and it’s one of my all time favourite albums, it sucks that kids now a days don’t know what real music is, and I agree with you on the guitar part
@@samuelkuehl6881 It truly is a shame man, and It’s really one of the main parts about our generation I dislike the most. It’s just a lot of the modern popular stuff that people find “talented” or “really good” just is objectively nowhere near emotionally impactful, culturally meaningful, or talent requiring as in the past. I’ll admit that occasionally new underground stuff here and there is just alright, but even then nothing from today strikes me even close to the same as music from the 70’s, 80’s, and early 90’s. I’ll take Rush (my favorite band since I was 12), Asia, Yes, Triumph, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Heart, and a lot of 80’s pop/rock stuff too (Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Foreigner/Lou Gramm, Toto, Journey, Bryan Adams, The Cars, and plenty of other pop, melodic rock/hard rock groups or artists) over anything in the last 20 years.

I agree, it’s the one part I truly hate about this generation of taste, bands like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Black Sabbath, Zz top, Judas Priest, UFO, Ozzy Osbourne, Deep Purple, Primus, Rush, Blue Oyster Cult, Yes, and Iron Maiden well be bands that I well always love, but I get so much flake at school form kids, saying it’s not “real” music, but I honestly don’t care what they say, and even the teachers complain about my music, it’s so stupid now
@@samuelkuehl6881 Damn that’s sad to hear, I’m lucky I have at least one or two friends and a cousin who can appreciate or try to listen to some of it. None of em though have that same passion or love for that older music, which is a big reason I often wish I could’ve grown up as a teen in the 80’s (hanging out bonding over music just chilling and really experiencing those albums, going to awesome concerts etc.). Although, a lot of the teachers in my school seem have pretty good music taste, some even notice the Rush and other band shirts haha. Well all we can do is try to share the music and love of it as much as possible and hopefully the culture will change as time goes on, but it’s hard to see that happening especially in the mainstream...

I think that's very true. His last at least half a dozen albums seem designed in a board room. Maybe its the best we can expect from the man, maybe not. Deep Purple for instance seem to have a firm grip on their creative process, so it its possible to remain a artistically viable act into your ...nth decade.
Dag Souleyedblue It just varies artist to artist. IMO, deep purple is more of an exception than the norm. It’s really hard to put out great, quality stuff when you’re in your 70s. You get tired easier, youre not as creative as you once were, your body has aged so the energy and ability has dipped, it’s just hard to do. It’s not hard to RECORD AND COMPOSE at that age, lots of bands and artists are in their 70s and still recording albums, I just think it’s harder to record and compose really good stuff at that age. And it’s nothing against the artist because they can’t help it. It’s just naturally harder due to age

That's it. Bark at the Moon is seriously underrated in my mind. Blizzard and Diary are the two best metal albums of the 80s. The Last in Line, Holy Diver, Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind, Powerslave close on his tail.

Great discussion! Blizzard has always been my favorite. About 10 or 15 years ago I gave No Rest for the Wicked another shot and was blown away. Since then, it has been my solid number 2. So energetic and catchy with stellar production and nice full sound. No down moments.

I was so glad to hear Pete say he loved You Can't Kill Rock and Roll because that song really takes me back to the great ol' days, sitting in a camaro, burning a doob, and just loving life at 18-years old. I was at the March 6th 1982 show in Birmingham, Alabama. We were still talking about the show and getting ready for the weekend and Spring break when it came over the radio about Randy and the crash. That was a very somber day...I can't begin to describe the feeling of loss. In my opinion, Ozzy, Randy, Rudy and Tommy were the most awesome rock lineup of all time. I knew there was no replacing Randy Rhoads and wondered how Ozzy would go on without him. I have to tip my hat to Brad Gillis though for stepping into such a difficult situation and doing an awesome job on Speak of the Devil. I never cared for live albums because the sound quality was always just too thin or boomy...but Speak changed that. To this day, I would rather hear the Speak version of The Wizard than any other. Aldridge just kills it on the drums and the sound quality just blew me away. Anyway, didn't mean to ramble, but so much to say. I love Ozzy and grew up listening to his albums over and over.
My Favorite Ozzy album would always be The Ultimate Sin cause it was the year i got into Metal and also the first Ozzy album i bought!

Actually I was hoping you included the live albums as well. Especially Brad Gillis deserves a mention for his job on the 'Speak of the Devil' album. I never understood why the audio record just contain Black Sabbath songs while all live videos from that tour are Ozzy songs.
Well I know that album was a reaction to Sabbath's Live Evil album with RJD. I think Speak of the Devil is a great live album. Great versions of those old Sabbath songs.

Yeah, I'm one of those people who love it. I didn't like it much the first time I played it, just cos it wasn't heavy enough. It sounded a bit boring, but after a couple more listens, I realised just how good the songs are and I think it has aged well.

That said, I love all of these albums. Oh, and the reason Sabbath was big with Ozzy, but declined without him while his solo albums always sold well is an easy one. Ozzy's voice is unique and well suited for heavy music along with the fact that he was always able to create amazing bands and steer the music so well.
Bark at the moon is my number one too. All songs are, at least, very good!
For me "Black Rain" is a Masterpiece, not his Best album, but my Goodness is Fascinating!!!

Black Rain is his most underrated "modern" album. It's undeniably heavy and the Japanese edition has the track "Nightmare" which is a killer track. The whole thing sounds like a sister album to Ozzmosis. "Thunder Under Ground" and "Tomorrow" would sound right at home on this record.
I credit Ozzy for getting me into metal at 11, back in 2001. I heard "Gets Me Through" on TV, then "Bark At The Moon" a year later while playing GTA: Vice City. I loved it!
1. Diary Of A Madman - Absolutely fantastic. Randy Rhoads blew me away even further with his sound and style. Him and Eddie Van Halen both.
2. The Ultimate Sin - I wasn't crazy about this as a kid but I've grown to love it a lot. Jake E. Lee is massively underrated.
3. No Rest For The Wicked - So dark and heavy. I always felt this was the closest Ozzy got to a Sabbath-esque solo album. Zakk's like Rhoads fused with Iommi.
4. No More Tears - Very "mature" album but absolutely great. "Hellraiser" was my first favorite Ozzy song.
5. Bark At The Moon - I love the atmosphere in this one. It's like a definition of what an 80's heavy metal album should be all about. Not crazy about two of the songs, though.
6. Black Rain - This came out when I was 17 and I absolutely loved it. Still do. By far my favorite of Ozzy's post-1991 albums. The bonus tracks are great (and essential), too.
7. Blizzard of Ozz - As I've grown older my love for this has faded. Some wasted "fillers" and some overplayed tracks. I concur with what you guys said.
8. Ozzmosis - It took years for me to like this album. It's decent but not something I ever crave to hear again. Very dated (90's alt./grungey sounding).
9. Scream - I was very disappointed with this but played it a lot nonetheless, trying to get into it. It didn't really work out that well.
10. Down To Earth - This was his current album when I got into him (and metal). Despite a few killer songs I always felt this was too "corporate" and "plastic".
11. Ordinary Man - I didn't have high expectations. None at all, really. Despite that it somewhat broke my heart. Just horrid. Sorry, Ozz.

I hate that type of mentality. It was the same thing when I was a kid in the 60s. You were either a Beatles fan or a Stones fan. I always liked both bands.

The answer to your question about why Ozzy was more successful than Black Sabbath: People are largely stupid and lack good taste. The unwashed masses will buy an album or a concert ticket because they think it makes them cool by association. They think Ozzy is cool because he is a hard-living, heavy metal fool. I have seen ten year old punks and sixty-five year old grandmothers wearing Ozzy t-shirts. It's sort of like what happened to KISS when six year olds like me back in 1978 started carrying KISS lunchboxes to school. Ozzy, like KISS, became a brand that had little to do with the quality of their music. Three words answer your question: OZZY, OZZY, OZZY! Those words represent the mob mentality that catapulted him to immense solo fame despite the fact that the man hasn't really put out an album worth my praise since 1986.

Well said. Sabbath is so much heavier and deeper, so much more real and no bullshit. Don’t get me wrong, Diary is the album that made me metal, but Ozzy’s solo stuff pails in comparison to the entity that is Black fucking Sabbath. 🤘🏻

Idk, Sabbath was my fav band growing up but atleast 80% of my enjoyment of Sabbath is Ozzys era. The other 20% being mostly Gillians one & done album, a handful of Dio songs. I jus love his odd voice, & think his melodies save alot of the blander material in his solo career

I absolutely love the first six Black Sabbath albums and quite like the first two solo albums. But I think if we’re being honest his entire solo career has been steered and managed by his wife Sharon. Without her he probably wouldn’t be alive, let alone making music. Unfortunately his drink and drug use has left him severely damaged and he hasn’t really been in control of his own career for decades. But he’s a legend and I’m glad he’s still around and making music in some form.
