@@bluematrix5001 My understanding is Cheap Trick was doing a series of gigs in Vegas where they were preforming entire Beatles albums live. The shows were getting great reviews and the band was having a blast. The venue offered them more dates. Without discussing with the rest of the band Robin said "No, we can't do it. My daughter is starting kindergarten and I need the month off." Bun was like "What the hell? We are going to walk away from a series of great gigs because your daughter is starting kindergarten?" From there Robin decided he didn't like Bun questioning his decision and it came up that Rick had a drummer right there in the house so after 30 some odd years Bun was out and Dax was in. The band also stopped paying Bun so he had to take them to court. He says that was pretty much the end of any sort of friendship. Sad that it ended over something so stupid but I have heard this story multiple times so I suspect it is close to how it went down. If anyone has newer, better info feel free to correct me.
I saw this show on ACL a few years ago and was blown away how good this band is. I've known of them since at least 1980, and I think they've always written and performed some of the greatest songs anyone ever has. Through the years I've only found bits and pieces of this concert, so thanks for giving us the entire show! "We're all Alright!"
@tproudboomer5965... Yeah Robin's still got it! Seen them 4 times, don't think I ever heard them play Heaven Tonight live? At least it doesn't seem like it. But a lot of partying back then, maybe they did....lol
I knew a couple of their songs late 70s, but had not seen them live, so I did not know what they looked like. They played a free live show at Houston Tx Astroworld Amusement park in the same late 1970s ...and I happened to see it. What floored me most of all was Bun E Carlos the drummer. He was like, I don't need long hair or a 6 neck guitar to be cool. I have the balls to go on stage as your dad the accountant, smoking cigs, as a bad ass drummer and that should work! 😊
Cheap Trick!!!! One of the hardest working bands in show business!!!! They just keep going!!!! 😊😊😊😃😀 And going!!!! And going!!!! 😄 One of my favorite bands Cheap Trick!!!
Rick's son is okay he gets the job done, but Bun E hit WAY harder and the band was tighter. They're still amazing don't het me wrong, CT was the First Big band I saw, backed up KISS in 77.
Cheap Trick is Rock N' Roll, and Rock N' Roll is Cheap Trick! Robin Zander, in the Top 5 of male rock singers ever! Gonna spend the rest of the day listening to Cheap Trick
Jon... no. I understand you say that as a compliment. they are no garage band. Bun E dude is one of the best most articulate drummers ever. Tom Petersen... dude actually invented the 12-string bass guitar and played it like a rhythm guitar. Vocals have melody and harmony w/ Rick and Tom. This is the antithesis of a garage band.
I saw them twice by in the late 70's! The girls were screaming so loud you couldn't hear the band! The true spirit of Rock lives in the soul of this super group! You want rock? These guys deliver!
Had a friend in Houston who worked for CBS records and he got us backstage for a Cheap Trick show in the 70s. Before the show we saw Rick, called out his name and he stopped talked with us for a few minutes. Chatty and friendly and funny. He did complain that he was experiencing debilitating insomnia - hope he's found a solution for that. Fun band, great performers live.
The band that doesn't physically age, this band defines my childhood growing up in central illinois. I've seen them more times than I can remember including my children, they are the perfect band to take your kids to, even more so to take backstage to meet with.
Cheap Trick was my second concert ever way back in 1979. I have seen them a few more times over the years, most recently this year opening for Heart. They still kill it, every night!
So great! I've been a fan since they opened for Bob Seger on the "In Color" tour. What a great bunch of talented guys - Robin is still running on all cylinders!
First time I saw them was in a little bar in Twin Lakes Wisconsin, early 70's. That was enough to get me hooked. Prior to their first album they played the Chicago north suburbs and southern Wisconsin. I had seen them 20 or 30 times before their album debut. One of the best covers they did was a Fat's Domino song...."ain't that a shame" and always followed by Dylan's "Please Mrs. Henry" ........two perfect and memorable renditions. Those intimate clubs and were some of the best performances I had ever seen. Bun E. Carlos was the drummer then and through their fame. My first concert was Cheap Trick in 1978. Robin Zander still sounds amazing. Rick is a great guitarist. He’s got a multitude of guitars. He owns all the rest of Aldo Nova’s Les Paul guitars with the Gibson Explorer headstock. One of my favorite guitars.
My first concert was also in 1978. Cheap Trick opened for Head East. Been a fan ever since. Will never forget Rick throwing Kiss albums to the crowd when they played Surrender. Love that they're still out there having fun!
The fact that Robin Zander kept this vocal range until he was past 60 years old is astonishing. What is he here, 58 or so? Talk about The Man with a Thousand Voices.
Yes. His voice has always impressed me, never cracking or not finding the range. I remember seeing them at least twice one year in the late 70s where they opened for both Foreigner and Kansas. I think the constant touring really toughened Robin's voice.

I heard an interview with Rick Nielsen in the early 80's where he said that Tom Petersson had left the band for health reasons. What was wrong with him was the question the interviewer asked. Nielsen responded that Petersson was making him sick.
