For the first couple of years after Bun left, it was a hard sell for me. They *almost* lost me completely, and I’m pretty much what most people would consider a ‘super fan’. I’ve stuck by them through thick and thin (a lot of thin in the 80’s) ever since I first heard the song “ELO Kiddies”, some 45 years ago. I just couldn’t wrap my head around a Cheap Trick without Bun E Carlos. I don’t care how good a replacement anyone is, you just can’t fill those shoes. It took actually going to see them live with Daxx. Though nowhere near as good as his predecessor, he knew all those songs 100%, and did them justice. Still, I really miss Bun E.
@@karengarrison3666 There are two different stories I’ve heard and read about, regarding his departure. I don’t know which of those two stories is the true story. Maybe they both are? Sounds to me like Bun was getting burnt out and was in constant physical pain, which I know from experience can cause a person to have a really short temper. Then again I wasn’t there, so who really knows? All I know is that Bun is still officially considered a member of CT, but he no longer plays drums for them. Pete Comita did an awesome job on the Bass ! His vocals were really great! Tom Pettersen was in rehab in 1981... I saw cheap Trick back in 1998 open up for ZZ top in Charlotte Coliseum North Carolina. Got lucky to go backstage to meet the band! Back then I was single, and got a kiss from Robin Zander, best kiss 💋 ever!
Rehab? You sure about that? This is the first I’ve heard of that. I know he left because of creative differences and general burnout from nonstop touring, plus there was that little thing with Dagmar… but I don’t think rehab was ever a factor.
great clean up on this one!. Ahhh the days of festival seating at large venues, love the footage of the mob running over each other to get the good seats up close
@@danahorton1202 Yeah I’m glad they don’t do that anymore. Especially as selfish and stupid as people are today. It was bad enough back then. I can’t even imagine how bad it would be now.
Man, Cheap Trick are such an underrated band. I loved these guys from day one... yeah, I'm old F.A.R.T. but I grew up with the best music ever! Fathers Against Radical Teens.
I was at this concert in 1981. I went with my best friend, Frank (R.I.P.). We got there early, stood there for hours and were some of the first to run through when they finally let us go, and we were in the front row right in front of Rick. Frank is the guy with the mustache and baseball cap right in the center of the screen at 0:37. I was right next to the couple that you see at 11:29. If the camera had panned one person to the right, you would see me. I wonder whatever happened to that couple. Dang, those kids are 60 now. This concert was broadcast on Channel 11 in Chicago a year or so after the concert, and I taped it but then accidentally recorded over part of it. So it's nice to see the concert again.
Hi Kay. Did Cold Chisel play at some point before Cheap Trick? I can hear a bit of "My Baby" in the opening of the video so assume it was recorded the same day?
@@aflsteve9139 Hi Steve. I don't remember anyone opening for them. I found this program, which I think confirms that no one played ahead of them. imgur.com/a/PreW7yx

I watched this concert on the local PBS station in Minneapolis aired sometime in the mid-to-late summer 1982! I'm sure it was aired close to the same time you saw it on the TV.
Well an epic show, you and him will always remember...this was there prime, Nielson is just ripping it up, I mean only realizing after 40 years, his skills are impeccable! I mean like Eddie VH playing, and that's no put down...the solo was amazing in this show!
He pulled it off fairly well. He was a good doppelgänger for Tom, plus he played a 12-string bass. Too bad he let the monkey on his back take over so quickly. He was a much better replacement for Tom than Jon Brant.
i remember seeing them the first time..i was not even a fan..went because my friends loved them...I was blown away with the sheer power, melodies and dynamics live! Love.
I had a small tape recorder and made a tape of this concert when it aired originally on TV. I must have listened to it 1000 times. Know every single second of this concert. Thanks so much for posting!
Seen them at LULU'S IN Kitchener Ontario Canada 1994 Woke up tour man that 58 gibson explorer Rick played great live band period this show rocks thanks for the video love this
OMG! I still have my VHS of this. LOL Glad it's on RUclips. Such a great show!! Going to their show at Foxwoods in a couple weeks! 2021 having fun again.
I never considered CT to be one of my favorite bands- but after seeing them in concert 4 times over the years, I can say that no other band does a better job live - it is their forte.
Definitely one of the best live bands ever. Consistently too. Even when they were pooping out one crap album after another in the 80’s and early 90’s, the live show was still every bit as amazing as ever. I’ve seen them something like 17 times over the years, starting in 1979 and most recently in 2018, and I can’t remember a single one of those shows ever being anything less than phenomenal. Even the ones with boring Brant on bass. 😄
Pete Comita never got the credit he deserved. The band stayed at the United Nations Hotel when they played Radio City Music Hall on this tour. We hung out at the hotel to meet them. Pete went up to everyone asking where he could score some blow. We were 12 and didn't have a clue. Nice guy, though.
He joined a very popular band in the Bay Area in 80's called The Flame. They kicked him out for his coke and heroine habit. He also got their keyboard player hooked on heroine and that also ended very badly.
@@TARDISNCOOKIES yeah, he was good for that kind of shit. The sad part is the guy was so talented, but he couldn't get out of his own way. Holy shit! It just fucking dawned on me, after listening and loving these guys since I was 12 years old - Cheap Trick are the American AC/DC!!!!!!!!! Robin's Bon. Rick's Angus (all the fucking way). Tom is Cliff (and Malcolm, and playing all those power chords on bass, to boot!) And Bun E.'s Phil. What a revelation!!!!!!!!!!
I was there. I remember watching it on soundstage too...I was one of those right in front by the barricades...waited in line a long time to get good seats...practically dead center just a couple rows back...I know when I watched it on soundstage I could see me and my friend Terry singing along to gonna raise hell...haven't watched the whole thing yet but glad to find it on here. @@mikeskillings5985 if Rockford 77 is the radio broadcast aka Samurai Rock Band, then i concur. Budakon was too polished. if theres an unpolished version...
@@DaveAnchovies There's a "too unpolished" version. The first US CD had a bad mix on Ain't That a Shame. During the final go round with each band member doing mini-solos, Robin Zander's guitar solos sound like a chicken being strangled. Just awful playing. Makes me think that the version on all other releases has Rick looping Robin's solos during that part.
Check out Don kirshner's Rock concert. Just that footage alone made me declare Cheap Trick the best American band of all time. Robin Zander is a genius. Rick Nielsen is a genius. Bun e Carlos is a genius. Tom Peterson what were you thinking leaving the band?
@@maxxschneider5534 Yeah that Don Kirshner footage is white-hot fire. I saw it back when it aired and it blew my little 11 year old mind. I watch it today all these years later and it still has the same effect on me. They were young, hungry, and unstoppable. Probably the best live footage of them I’ve ever seen, though this one here ain’t too shabby either. [EDIT] As far as Tom leaving when he did, I kind of understand why he chose to do so. It was a very grueling, exhausting period for them. They had been touring, recording, and doing TV promo spots nonstop for about 3 years straight without a single break, and then when they went into the studio to record “All Shook Up”, Tom knew they were going in the wrong stylistic direction, and he was right. That album was the beginning of a downward spiral that lasted for 18 years. I’ve met Tom. He’s a very quiet, laid back, reserved person. All the insanity that was happening daily around that turn of the decade period just got to be a bit too much for a guy like him.
I saw The Rolling Stones this same year (1981) at the Houston Astrodome, floor seats, for $12. That was pretty standard pricing back then for big rock concerts. I’m not exactly sure when ticket prices started going through the roof. Some time in the late 90’s maybe?
Thank you, you brought back a piece of my early teen years, my dad let me(along with my older brother, lol) attend Chicago fest just to see them, I had all of their albums ( unfortunately those were lost in a storage fire a year later 😔💔) , and this was my 2nd time seeing them. I was mesmerized and loved every second. Again ,thanks, this was a great reminder of what an awesome band they are and that I was there that night to see them ❤❤❤
Back in the early 70's, I was a kid in the Dells, probably about 5 or 6 years old. Robin Zander performed/worked(?) at a place called Tower Pub with a guy named Brian Beebe who were known as Zander and Kent. My mom and my aunt were cocktail waitress and bartender there. My dad, my sister and I used to take a walk a couple blocks to get there during the summer and pick up my mom and sometimes my aunt just before their shift was done. Those were the days when they used to throw peanut shells all over the floor to soak up the beer and that place always had peanut shells all over the place as I remember. Some of those times, some dude with long blonde hair would give my sister and I kiddie cocktails and my dad a beer and get some small talk as an adult would back in those days. Fast forward to 1979 I bought the Dream Police album with my allowance. When I got home (shopped in Portage at Value Village) my mom saw the album and told me that she used to work with Robin. She then said, He was a nice guy.... you don't remember him? He used to give you and your sister those damn kiddie cocktails and you kids would have a sugar rush and we would have to chase you around the Dells on our way to the car. Last I heard, Brian (Kent) still performs in the Dells area at different locations and Robin comes around once every year or two and they perform together at places like Monks for a little bit of reminiscing I imagine.
I saw their last show at Monk's right before the pandemic. Dan put on a great spread for the show. My wife and I still catch the Nielson Trust at Monks every time they play there.
Who came first, Rick Nielsen or Angus young? Cheap trick are absolute masters at their craft! They take a back seat to nobody. Be it Kiss, Led zepp or anyone! This video and others like it are why RUclips is so important and why we are so blessed with RUclips. I will not give this video a like, but a great big solid "love"!
This was a spectacle of a show! A homecoming for the band, perhaps, at the height of their pre- Dont Be Cruel fame. I see a barely 16 yr old lil ole me there, unaware of the most adventurous life that was to follow.
Was 5th row dead center for this tour at the Boston Garden 1981, after during the last encour Joe Perry came out & they played Daytripper & then Steven Tyler came out & they all jammed the shite out of "Last Time" by the Stones. I've been looking for this tour with the double bass drum kit ! Great Album & whaddda show
Who can imagine a show with Cheap Trick, Steel Panther, Chappell Roan, and Pansy Division together, and doing at least one collective set, plus sitting in for songs in each other's sets, or meme'ing each others' memes? Emcee, Weird Al?
This could have been vastly improved with just some quick shots of the drummer now and then. sigh He was a big part of what made this band great. My regards to Bun E. Carlos.
I can just send you a link from my personal cloud site to download. It'll be much better than all the compressionn RUclips adds to it. My email is tardis.n.cookies
Festival seating was a curse; just ask the Who :( A bad idea whose time is thankfully no more... My respect to those 14 who lost their lives in Cincinatti Ohio...
Bun usually played a 3-piece trap set with two floor toms and a single bass drum i don't recall seeing him play a double bass kit with 3 mounted and 2 floor toms but shows how much i know and he's one of my favorite drummers.
Yeah, the double-kick drums were a short lived thing, fortunately. I saw them around this time, when Pete Comita was the bassist, and I remember the double-kick and thinking “Oh no, they’re going full heavy metal”, but then the next time I saw them (1983), it was back to a single kick. I think for a brief moment in the early 80’s they were toying with the idea of being a metal band. It kind of shows a bit on “One On One”. The production on that album is like some weird hybrid of heavy metal and new wave. I wasn’t much of a fan.
Thank you for uploading this somebody else had uploaded it but had taken it down or RUclips taking it down I love this concert I was there back in I think it was 79 or 80 love this concert one of my favorite band!
May 26 1979, Convention Center in Asbury Park, Cheap Trick was my first concert ... and I saw Cheap Trick on this tour - March 5th 1981 .. UFO opened .. I was 12, my parents drove through a snowstorm to take us .God bless 'em ... Best double bill I've ever seen ... Cheap Trick, In Color, Heaven Tonight, Budokan, Dream Police, All Shook Up - the greatest run of albums to start a career
As a guitar player, I'm always in awe of all the vintage guitars Rick Nielsen pulls out during their shows. I saw them in a North Chicago theatre in 1980. Great show.
The best performance from Trick I've seen on RUclips and the best crowd shots. Love the guy holding up the poster in the beginning. Ha. Wish Tom hadn't left/gotten kicked out. I don't begrudge Trick for experimenting on their records but they had to have known they would alienate the fans who fell in love with Budokan. When I hear the Jack Douglas tracks from '80 I wish they had kept going with that, although I like about 1/2 of ASU.
I saw them on this tour at Radio City Music Hall in NYC. UFO opened. I was surprised Pete Comita was playing bass. They were still great. Saw them several times after that in the 80s and 90s with Jon Brant and Tom Petersson back in the band. Have never seen them without Bun E. It ain't Cheap Trick without him.
I would have to say that their song speed for some songs was a tad brisk. BUT there was nothing like opening for CT at Night Gallery playing their first album.
This wasn’t their prime. Their prime was ‘78-‘79. I mean, don’t get me wrong… they were still great at this time, and even though he pulled it off, Pete Comita, the guy playing bass here, was a short-lived replacement. I just can’t imagine them being in their prime when it’s not even the original lineup.
I remember seeing this on the Night Flight TV show. Which I think was on the USA Network. If I am wrong about any of this please someone reply back. MTV wasn't launched yet I found out that MTV came out August 1 1981 so I was wrong. But I still think this Cheap Trick concert was on Night Flight
Yeah it was on Night Flight. That was where I first saw it. However it originally aired on PBS from what I understand, back in ‘81 right after it was filmed. I know some people who saw it that way. I also remember that this was heavily bootlegged in the 80’s and early 90’s on shitty 10th generation VHS tapes with dreadful quality. Ah… the pre-internet days, when bootleggers could make a fortune off of pure crap.
Robin Z is just fucking awesome on Gonna Raise Hell....this band was always a kick ass concert that you would to go to. and Tom P rocked the fuck out of this song.
@@mikemcmillen9581Well to be fair, Pete looked an awful lot like Tom. Especially at a distance. And then he also played a 12 string bass like Tom, which back in those days was extremely rare. I can definitely understand the confusion.
All Shook Up had potential to be an amazing follow up to Dream Police. The problem is the production. Hearing songs from the album played live here and hearing how solid they actually were lets me know that production value means everything and can easily make or break an album.
I personally thought ASU was a terrible follow-up to Dream Police, and a big step in the wrong direction. There was one really great song, “Stop This Game”, but from there it was all downhill. I can’t even listen to side 2. It’s just a bunch of self-indulgent experimentation that goes nowhere. I really wish they would have stuck with the original 5th album they had started recording with Jack Douglas earlier that year that got scrapped in favor of All Shook Up. There were a couple of tracks from that session that were released on the “Found All The Parts” EP, and in my opinion they’re much better and more true to CT’s style than most of what’s on ASU. I think they were just a bit too mesmerized at the thought of working with the Beatles’ former producer, and lost sight of the music itself.
@@necrodamus5481 I didn’t much care for One On One. All except for one song: “If You Want My Love”, which is a truly great song. The album after that one (Next Position Please) was better, but honestly I didn’t really like anything they did in the 80’s. They lost their way there for a good long while, and didn’t get back on the right track until 1997 when they did the album on Red Ant - the “other” self-titled album. However they remained amazing live through it all.
I love All Shook up and One on One. My girlfriend and I used to listen to both of those when we started dating and the first time she and I kissed, If You Want My Love was playing. 40 years later, we're still together, with two kids and a grandson. Cheap Trick is the soundtrack of my life.
I tapped this off of Channel 11 (PBC) when it happened 24 years ago; still got the VHS tape. Unfortunately 480 lines of resolution cant be fixed that much.
That’s part of why I’ve always loved ‘em so much. They could never really be pigeonholed as any one thing. Were they hard rock? Were they power pop? Were they new wave? Were they glam rock? The truth is they were *ALL* of those things, and then some. They were always able to break down barriers. Almost every time I’ve seen them live, the crowd is a total mixed bag of people who you would normally never see under one roof together. Punks, metalheads, old rockers, young kids, old farts, you name it…. CT are a band for the people.
@@clutch2827 Well that’s just the radio. They always go for the lowest common denominator. It isn’t just Cheap Trick. They do that with everybody. I saw cheap Trick back in 1998 open up for ZZ top in Charlotte Coliseum North Carolina. Got lucky to go backstage to meet the band! Back then I was single, and got a kiss from Robin Zander, best kiss 💋 ever!
Cheap Trick was amazing live in the 90's. Thanks for sharing that.
I am sooooooo jealous about your kiss from Robin Zander !!!
Petersson wasn't in rehab he Left mostly because of his wife it's a long story -
Rehab? You sure about that? This is the first I’ve heard of that. I know he left because of creative differences and general burnout from nonstop touring, plus there was that little thing with Dagmar… but I don’t think rehab was ever a factor.
@FreddieandBrenda WOW ! I would have given anything to get a kiss from Robin back in those days. Lucky you !!!
Best American rock band ever.
I agree. I'm going to see them in Tucson for the 3rd time this friday.
great clean up on this one!. Ahhh the days of festival seating at large venues, love the footage of the mob running over each other to get the good seats up close
no one loved it for The Who in Cincinnati
@@danahorton1202 Yeah I’m glad they don’t do that anymore. Especially as selfish and stupid as people are today. It was bad enough back then. I can’t even imagine how bad it would be now.
Man, Cheap Trick are such an underrated band. I loved these guys from day one... yeah, I'm old F.A.R.T. but I grew up with the best music ever!

@@kayraro1933 Thanks Kay. It must have just been an odd piece of audio dubbing over the opening scenes then. Take care!
Edit... I just found this page: www.concertarchives.org/concerts/chicagofest-c5cfc5c2-51a7-47a6-a1e2-05a678bfa6b6. Looks like Chisel might have been added as an opener after the program was printed.
Pete Comita did a fantastic job on the bass and BG vocals in Tom Petersson's absence.
He pulled it off fairly well. He was a good doppelgänger for Tom, plus he played a 12-string bass. Too bad he let the monkey on his back take over so quickly. He was a much better replacement for Tom than Jon Brant.
Rick totally disliked Comita

Why?
My guess is that Rick is more of the Pepsi generation. 👀@@karengarrison3666

America’s best rock band.
Saw them in Saskatoon Saskatchewan Canada around this time, still have the guitar pick I got that night.cheers thanks for posting
fantastic performance of reachout
This show is so good! Used to have it on VHS watched it over and over again
Absolutely brilliant live performance! Such talented musicians and Robin is just an amazing versatile singer…and so hot as well 😍 NP…surrender 😍
What Pete looking for blow really? Sarcasm intended
@@TARDISNCOOKIES yeah, he was good for that kind of shit. The sad part is the guy was so talented, but he couldn't get out of his own way. He pissed away golden opportunities, that 98% of the population would never have access to or be talented enough to take advantage of. I hope he has had made peace with all the people he hurt whether intentional or not and cleaned up.
@@therealfronzilla According to an interview on 12stringbass.net he alleges that Robin stole the song "I Can't Take It" from him after introducing recordings to Robin, and working with him on arrangements of two songs to form the basis of that song. He also said he wasn't credited for his playing on "One on One" which he recorded shortly before leaving the band. That's show business I suppose.
I had heard that Comita was directly from Italy and didn't speak English very well. Any truth in that?

My very first concert 40 years ago today and all the way in the back. At 9:13, my family and I were near the lighting area at the back entrance. Very loud and energetic atmosphere but rockin' that night.

One of the gggrrreatest concerts of all-time!!! Bun E. with a double bass drum set!!! xoxo The Clarences
Awesome as always! And especially as this is the only place to watch this through in its entirety. Every where else on RUclips it’s cut up by individual song. Thanks for this restored video!
I LOVE your analogy to AC⚡DC!
It's perfect! ❤
This version of Gonna Raise Hell... Whoa.
One of the best live performances
It's good but Budakon 78/79& Boston 78 and Rockford Illinois 77 and Rockplast 79&83 and Daytona Beach 88&89 was better
0:10 Tickets were $1.00 - that's ONE dollar
That is insane! WOW!
I need a time machine.
I saw The Rolling Stones this same year (1981) at the Houston Astrodome, floor seats, for $12. That was pretty standard pricing back then for big rock concerts. I’m not exactly sure when ticket prices started going through the roof. Some time in the late 90’s maybe?
Wow....memories. Chicagofest on Navy Pier, before it was ruined and turned into a corporate food fest. (Taste of Chicago)
I was part of that rushing stampede to get the good seats! lmao!!
@party marty Stage right a few rows back. 16 and high as hell with a great buzz from a smuggled 1/2 pint of pep Schnapps.

Saw the '81 tour in Sunrise, FL. They rocked on SNL that year as well. Best times!

Cheap Trick In Their Prime. I was lucky to see them February 6th 1980 Springfield Illinois Prairie Capital Convention Center

@@Shikta-poobah67 Since we're on topic. what are your thoughts on One on One? More of a return to style than ASU?

I cannot understand how "Reach Out" did not remain a part of their setlist in all these years since then.
I always thought Cheap Trick were pop. They fookin' rocked hard!
@@Shikta-poobah67 It's unfortunate that radio only played the poppy ones.
@@clutch2827 Well that’s just the radio. They always go for the lowest common denominator. It isn’t just Cheap Trick. They do that with everybody. Personally I loved the early (late 70’s) hits, and didn’t necessarily think of songs like Dream Police or Surrender as being overly “poppy”, but that’s just me.
‘Power Pop’ was the category that they were put in. Blondie, The Police & The Cars were also pigeonholed in this too.
