Amazingly the best of the early days of rock at the time! I'm so old, nowadays, But I saw these bands, l was luckily in Atlanta Georgia where the band's would do well, saw many of the greats, was just a kid 1969!
They really worked! Super talented band. Ric's arrangements and odd lyrical styles. Ben's voice added depth and feel. Elliott the secret weapon every great band has. His interpretations and melodic quirkiness had a hardness that cut through so powerfully. Keyboards pumped up the vibes and took the songs into genre bending styles. The drums consistently created a deep pocket of stability and quality. Foundational drumming created the canvas for the artist to jump on and off of. Wonderful band that had artists at each instrument. A very rare feat. This produced music that had authenticity and integrity.
This broadcast was the first time I'd seen the cars (Sept, 1980...I was 12...I think this is that broadcast. They performed twice on the show). In 1980, I once took my guitar to an audition in Costa Mesa where this band was looking for members. They totally idolized The Cars. They wanted to be a clone band.
They did it right - a good deal of how I dressed in high school was based on their style. I had a black and yellow striped collar shirt with a half black-half white skinny leather tie - in 9th grade!
Rest in Peace Ric, this is one of my favorite live performances from The Cars. The entire band was on fire, thank you for your music and being an important part of my youth.
It's good, but 'best' (for me) would have to be during their peak, 1978-1979. Good thing there's lots of it here on YT. I love this song, and it cooks for sure...but 1) David is rushing the tempo, 2)Ben doesn't do much in it, and doesn't appear too thrilled about that, 3) Greg appears confused (about camera placement, maybe?). Ric and Elliott carry this song. Perhaps it was the nature of performing on live television, which has to be simultaneously exciting and terrifying for even seasoned performers like The Cars.

This band just played perfectly. Elliot Easton is Never mentioned in greatest rock and roll guitarists conversations that I hear. He is one of the best to ever strap up and plug in! Ben Orr, held that bass line...Always tight with flare! Greg on keys, and D Robinson keeping the funky 5/4 time signature with Ben, while the rest played 4/4...Just Simply amazing! So Sad its over...but They WILL live on forever!
My favorite live performance of this song. I got the Panorama album when someone gave it to me at my sister's high school graduation party. "Hmm.. I don't really like this - do you want it? Uh-YES" At the time Candy-O was getting all the airplay and their first album was still played a lot, I put this on and was surprised at how different Panorama was from their first two albums, with its quirky lyrics and odd time signatures. Elliot totally nailed this performance and Ric even jams with him a little on his solo! Elliot is on his hot rodded Lead-I guitar here, this version of the solo is unique compared to the other times he played it live. Ric is churning out those eighth note "clickies" on his trusty Dean Cadillac.

A consummate professional, great bassist, incredibly handsome and talented and will never grow old if we keep watching him and the guys do what they do so well.
RIP Ben and Ric
Amazing performance and awesome solo by Elliot!
Amazingly the best of the early days of rock at the time! I'm so old, nowadays, But I saw these bands, l was luckily in Atlanta Georgia where the band's would do well, saw many of the greats, was just a kid 1969!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Yes indeed! I think this is Elliot's best live performance and he looks super-cool here too!
I love how on some of his solos he’s throwing in country riffs!! So dynamic! Ben walking that bass, just all bad ass and tight those guys!!
This is one of my favorite cars tunes!
REST IN PEACE RIC OCASEK AND BENJAMIN ORR ❤️
joseph adcock genious!
joseph adcock they are both rocking in eternal life with the greatest of greats musicians!!
@@robertjohnston1383 He came and drove them to paradise.

They were the coolest damn thing I had ever seen or heard. I had a full time paper route. I had a pretty good stash of money. Went to Magnolia Thunderpussy Records on High Street near OSU (swear to god that is the real name of the place....look it up if you doubt it). Bought everything they had from the Cars. Best damn day ever. Wore those LP's out.
That's cool man. He's right. The Famed Magnolia Thunderpussy Record Store is still thriving in the short north area of columbus, just south of OSU...
I was there! About 4 rows from the front. Never forget it 💕

Lady LC: You are so lucky! I was freaking out watching this on tv at age 14!
RIP Ric Ocasek
Fuck yea , lucky 💫💫💫💫🖤🖤🖤
What a wonderful performance. The artists actually playing and singing. No auto tune, no backing track.
The show called Fridays (It was ABC's answer to NBC's Saturday Night Live should've lasted a bit longer than it had. I found the show to be hilarious and cutting- edge in it's proper, calculated way. I'm eternally grateful to have these shows archived and maintain to it's original form.
...
Everyone mentions Easton's solo but I also love the tight little fills at the end of the song. So good!
RIP Ric, thank you for all the wonderful music. Loved you and all The Cars.
Los autos sonaban increiblemente bien en estudio y en vivo.
Gran banda musical, clasica por siempre.
Ben always looked good but he was heartbreakingly handsome here. I liked his songs the most. His voice was beautiful.

This is Rick not Ben lol 😆
@@JMAC-rs6ey I know it's Rick singing but I was still commenting about Ben.

Benjamin's the best ever! Well everyone else in the cars is the best too lol
This is easily the best live performance that I have ever seen in my lifetime! Amazing!!!
These cats were so cool. I was in high school when The Car’s music was jamming through out the air waves in the 70s and 80s. Cooler and simpler times...
High School Years yes ..Saturday Night Roller Skating
El Gato Gordo amen amigo
Yes I am almost done with the time machine.
@@CP-kb1du hanging out with my first girl Tina in the back of my Plymouth. Lol.
Such good times. Made my mixed tape of fave CARS songs. Comparing which cassette tape made the better for mixed sounds. 30 minutes or 45 or the big 120 minute tape 🤪😜😂
In 97 I used to dance w my daughter to this. We picked this one out of the whole cd. Wow. Love u NORMITA
BANANAS!!! ...The 80s were such a cool time to be a teen. I remember buying this cassette on sale for 5.99 and playing it over & over. It didn't matter if you lived in OC, the Valley or deep in L.A - good music is simply good music! Back in the day The Cars were the business!
In 1980, I once took my guitar to an audition in Costa Mesa where this band was looking for members. They totally idolized The Cars. They wanted to be a clone band.
Superb musicians and the sound guy has everything dialed in perfectly!!!
Cool clothes, cool songs, cool guitars very chic band.
Amen..love this live version.
@@whatevershebrings even if u weren't a troll you'd be wrong on your assessment of their musical performance/aptitude...and as for your opinion on then other stuff, who cares

Dang...i was in 7th grade when this album came out....i still have my vinyl copy!!
Great look, great sound - fusing new wave and hard rock with well written songs. Genius. I sure do miss the Cars!
@Jeff Baker The Cars' session was short but oh so sweet ! Gotta love The Cars !!!
And Elliot’s country riffs! Mind blowing
Most excellent! Had the pleasure of seeing them perform live in San Diego at the sports Arena in September 1984. What a great time it was!
Studying guitar at The Berklee College of Music in Boston shows in the polished mastery of EE's various solos. All of The Cars were excellent musicians in their own ways. This was a time when guys wore cool gig duds with some stage awareness going on sans grunge.
Jeff Baker Elliot Easton is legend. Panorama is genius, Ric is a lyrical savage. Great album man
I always liked the outfit Ben wore during the Panorama days. Sharpest looking duds I've ever seen.
Ben Orr hanging back like no one knows he's the coolest guy in the room.
That's because he was the coolest....
Haha! I started the video and those exact words came to mind. When I scrolled down I saw that you had put the words in their correct order. Thanks
That's what makes him the coolest guy in the room!
And how he always had those smooth, cool steps up to the mic !
Also, gotta give it up for Elliot Easton...that dude sure can play his guitar !!
He almost disappears because his outfit matches the background.
All I need is what you got...All I need is you to niite.... RIP Ric you and The Cars were one of the coolest bands of all time
Ric was an original..nobody looked or sounded like him..rest easy dude, you will be missed
I watched this the night it aired.
Loved "Friday's", The Cars I was in heaven.....
food for my soul.
Same here. It was a great performance
I always loved how Ben and Elliott meshed so well in the rifts and just jammed together
I Just Love those Keyboards or Synthesizers the way they sound. EPIC!!!!
Wish I had a clue on how2 sound like that Grrrr
notice how those off-beat synth chords sound similar to Spirits in The Material World by The Police? well, this was the year before :)
@@derekdrums Thanks. I just had a song in mind. This was it.
I love that sound too! Takes me back to my childhood listening to the radio in the 80's.
I hear Tom petty you got lucky all over those keyboards
Back then I was to young to know any better, but this band was just perfect and the musicianship was TOP NOTCH!
I am so thankful that we can go back and revisit these performances!
👌👌👌👏👏👏😢🇸🇮
I remember watching this on TV way back when...And was blown away .. think I was 15
Cars hit it out of the park with this one.
They had a few more mind blown songs like dangerous type and tonight she comes
The Cars were always a great band live ! This performance was particularly good ! They were so tight and clean sounding
Elliot Easton: underrated
Kevin Raabe Who underrated him?
Dumbest comment on RUclips. Every damn music video someone is "underrated."

The Cars oozed "Coolness"!
Also Elliott Easton is a beast on the six string stinger.
Kudo's on postin' a nice quality copy of this vid!
also, Elliot is a leftie
He's also a very good guitar player.
Love them all so much. David was a huge influence on my formative year's as a drummer.
