Dear god mister Elliot Easton! You are a masterpiece on the lead guitar! I would love to know what it was like to play alongside Benjamin Orr? You guys were so awesome together ❤
RIP Benjamin Orr and Rick Ocasek, you passed away, to the other side but your music and your charisma will live forever , thank you for your beautiful music.
Was a camp counselor at a Boston area summer camp that Ric’s kid went to. He drove up in a white Thunderbird and was wearing leather pants for parents night.
As a technician EE is excellent, but IMO what makes him great is that he takes those solos to such interesting places. He chooses very interesting note progressions.
Yeah...the Cars were cool in so many ways. Elliott could pull stuff out of left field and make it sound great and make sense...like the the country-ish licks in My Best Friends' Girl. Never thought about that with Ocasek, but you're right. Pretty cool observation
I think in some years people will start to realize how great an impact the Cars had on music. The Strokes are the first that come to mind, but seriously take any band with 2 guitars from the 90s onward...
Doesn't Elvis Costello still play the J-Master he first was seen w/ in '77? Too many switches w/ too subtle a change for me, but Elvis is a prolific songwriter and intelligent lyricist.
This is one of the greatest, straight up, to the point and balls out tasteful guitar solos in Rock.. thank you Elliot Easton for blessing us with your awesomeness :).. and the rest of the band ain't too shabby either... RIP Ben & Ric
@@MrTruckerf Yet, it still manages to describe it perfectly, IMO. I'd rate this #4 in Easton's Ouvre, behind the solos in 3. "Tonight She Comes", 2. "My Best Friends Girl", and 1. "Touch and Go."
I always prefer the Cars live performances than the recorded versions. They sounded better. Plus they moved things around upon occasion and made it fun. All of them are/were great musicians. I sure wish I had been that much younger so I could have seen them in concert myself. Ben was always my favourite!
Just mention the name Elliot Easton to any guitar player, and you'll get a smile and a knowing nod. Why? Because they know how extraordinarily good he is.
I've loved the Cars since before I knew who they were. Growing up in the 70's I always loved thier tunes on the radio. Now at 52 and after being a guitar player for almost 40 years and playing in many garage bands with many people they have risen to be my very favorite band! The songwriting, the way they all contribute simple pieces to form something much larger than the sum of its parts is mind boggling! Very greatful these old videos are here to enjoy!
I played in a few bands from Boston, one of which we had a rehearsal room at the Cambridge Music Complex. I had the opportunity to meet them and sit in as they rehearsed songs for their third album. Great memories.
Saw these guys five times in the 80s...certainly one of the most interesting bands of that era. So sad that Ben passed as he was such a major part of their sound. I still listen to them today. I don't ever see that changing.
@@humanchannel7825 No I missed them on that tour...although I saw them for Shake it Up and Door To Door and both were great. I think sometimes their music wasn't as crisp live as it was in the studio. But most of seeing a band live is being in the room with them...it's a true bonus if they sound good.
@@humanchannel7825 They seemed a bit tired and jaded on that tour. I think a lot of it came from Ric having been pressured to write new material quickly knowing it wasn't his best, plus they hadn't had a lot of time to perfect each songs sound; many of their previous songs were one's they'd played and perfected long before. It happened with a lot of bands back then, and it still does with some today.
Rick, the Cheap Trick guitarist is a contemporary of EE's, but I never hear anyone say they were inspired by the guy. EE and Rick N. both have beyond monstrous guitar collections too. Rather, I hear others talking about EE's chops.
Badass! Jesus H, how did we go from groups like The Cars to what we have now? You want "Rock?" Let The Good Times Roll. You want "Pop?" Shake It Up! Ric's songwriting and vocals, Ben the "crooner" of the group, David keeping a solid beat and of course Elliot Easton's guitar playing. They just don't make em like that anymore.....
Ben was not just the crooner of the group, he sang lead on Let's Go, Bye Bye Love, Just What I needed, It's All I Can Do, Candy-O, It's All Mixed Up, Moving in Stereo. The only song that seems like a crooner song is Drive.
That means they had a romantic Interlude with his Shades on ..wow...during that 1979/80 Fridays show era, think about, back in Jan 16 & 19th 2006, both actress Shelley Winters and Anthony Franciosa died within days of each other, they had been married to each other from '57-'60..before he Rightfully so, went to romance every beautiful actress in the world as a romantic spy film superstar.,,but he always felt a sense of guilt for leaving her.
Man that was one of the best performances by the cars they all look like they are having fun. Oh just to be back then with them. Thanks for the music guys and thanks Ric for the songs. You will be missed.
Thanks for post. I adore Elliot Easton's pink guitar for one. But the whole image of the band, the artistry and production of the songs captured perfectly in this live performance, serve to re-enforce The Cars HOF status. In fact, the overall effect of the multi-masterpiece songs on Shake It Up is enough to lift it to #2 on my list of my Top 5 Cars albums (1978 -1984) behind Candy-O and before their debut. In addition, for my money, "Think It Over" and "Cruiser" are brilliant and sometimes over-looked masterpieces on the album, as well. Super Cars fan Nov 2020.

The movies were also amazing…it made school bearable to make it to the weekend to cruise with your friends and listen to great music or see a film worth watching more than once. Glory days!
I recall working at Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlour in SoCal rocking this jam on the PA during closing back in the early 80s. Those were definitely some great memories in my youth 😎

Elliot's outro solo to the finish is a really nice touch, These guys were a fun and class act.
