Smokin collection of basses, too! While it's hard to beat Fender as a workhorse bass, it gets boring sometimes watching everyone play one. Wasn't an issue with Ben - he was on something different virtually every tour.

And it’s like they found the secret sauce! Suddenly they had 2 hit albums and headlined. It helps that Ric wrote great songs too and Ben sang so well. RIP Ric and Ben💐
The Cars were five guys who knew exactly what to play and when to play it...and when not to. All the pieces locked together and the effect was stunning! Still is...
Greg Hawkes looks like the nerd who gets 100% on every test he takes in school but he can play keyboards like no one I've ever heard. The different sounds he gets for each song the Cars play is remarkable. When I first heard It's All I Can Do his keyboard is what made me a fan of the Cars. Then when I heard I've Got A Lot On My Head his keyboard got me hooked.

Yes he is.. That man should be right with Ben, Ben could play anything, but Elliot should be in one of the top guitarists also... That man can play with passion...
So true... Everything Easton invented and played was perfect and made the song TONS better. If you heard a song without his part, people would be like, WTF is this....

Benjamin Orr a terribly underrated bassist and singer!! First time I heard The Cars I was in a station Wagon Lori driving on my left Anna on my right eating for the movie Taxi Driver to start at the Pacific Drive in here in San Diego 1978 I was 15. Lori looked quite a bit like Actress Barbara Eden. I wish I could tell you I got lucky that night but I didn’t. Lori and Anna liked each other more than they liked me. They were both a year ahead of me and after graduation Lori went up to UC-Davis to become a vet but never did. I always pictured Lori playing guitar in some coffee house in Greenwich village or North Beach in San Francisco. But Lori went to work for the Military Industrial Complex at General Dynamics married and had three children. Anna went to work for a local Taco Bell and then just sort of disappeared???? Whenever I hear a song from the early days of The Cars I always think back to that night Easter Break 1978 and think what might have been The three of us use to go everywhere together high school dances parties etc. High school romances incredibly intense but sadly usually terribly brief. I did my inspector Clouseau imitation about 5 months later off the cliffs of La Jolla severely damaged my spinal column changed my life forever!!! I wish I could go back to that night 45 years ago when I first heard The Cars sadly I can’t!!RIP Benjamin Orr”Who’s Gonna drive your car……..?
Benjamin Orr was cool as cool could be, yet humble & just "a person" when being interviewed. I would loved to have met him. I'm sure he'd have been a really fun guy to know. I see him smile often in videos, which tells me a lot about a person, right there. He had thee cutest crooked smile. I think maybe he had a couple of nervous ticks that he did with his mouth, (observed during interviews), but they were actually cutely attractive, & possibly may have contributed to some of his intonations & the way he pronounced/sang the song's words so uniquely. Love it all. I was an upper-classman when The Cars became really popular. I got one look at/listen to Benjamin Orr & I was hooked. My fav Cars songs are the ones that he sings lead on, although I like them all. Watching him perform...has black leather EVER looked much better? Not quite sure how a "frenchy"-looking band is supposed to look. I guess when you would ask Americans they'd say "be dressed all green and love water" ?
Great shot of Elliot and Ben connecting at 7:50 through the outro, both locked into the groove and the smiles on each them reveal just how much fun it is to jam together. I remember those moments from my jam band days.
Even starting out, these guys were the ultimate professionals, 3 people or 30 thousand they always gave 100% , and to repeat a fellow poster here, they are just as good live than on the lps, knew these guys well, worked at The Rat, Boston 76-78, they were regulars, playing or not. RIP Ben and Ric.
RIP Ben Orr and Ric Ocasek. So, it turns out that they were one of the best New Wave (or Rock) bands that ever lived. Also, one of the few bands who never had any personnel changes. All 5 were extremely talented, and they were Happy songs!! Thank you Ric Ocasek for writing such great songs.
He knew Benjamin Orr could sing his songs and it’s incredible. How a band like this could come about from a random meeting with two people so many years previous..
What a unique tight band they were, two top lead singers at opposite ends of the looks department but they just got on with it and boy they rocked.Much missed Ben Orr RIP.
One of the greatest bands ever. All 5 are extremely talented. How talented is Elliot Easton? He is a self-taught guitarist who is right handed. After the Cars became a band, one of their promoters/managers suggested he switch to playing left-handed so that it would be more visually appealing during live shows. So be did! Now THAT is talent!
I must have listened to this album and Candy O 2000 times when these two records came out in the 1970s. As a 15 -16yo I loved and still love this band and they helped shape me become the adult that I am today. Hard to believe it was 40 years ago?! RIP Ric Okasek and Benjamin Orr, your music will live on forever.
I am jealous I must say of you being there at just the right age when they began. My brother played all of his records loud enough to pass through the wall between our bedrooms. The Cars were in heavy rotation, especially the Shake It Up album that should’ve been named “Cruiser”. Heartbeat City became the first new Cars record I bought at 15 years young. That had a big wow factor. I had the thrill of discovering “Panorama” as the only one that I didn’t even know about! I’m so glad for RUclips giving me The Cars from the start.
The Cars were totally ahead of their time, I’m just happy that I grew up during the 70’s and 80’s.
Time has pasted Jason....not sure what time it is there. It's Cars time in my house. 6/16/24

Definitely one of those bands who were too good to not be British or European. Same with the Left Banke.
@@robertjorgensen4518 Correction: 70's & 80's
Not quite sure how a "frenchy"-looking band is supposed to look. I guess when you would ask Americans they'd say "be dressed all green and love water" ?
Great shot of Elliot and Ben connecting at 7:50 through the outro, both locked into the groove and the smiles on each them reveal just how much fun it is to jam together. I remember those moments from my jam band days.
absolutely adorable
Love those looks too. Although that’s right when RUclips put a f@@@ ad in the sequence !
"Let them brush...your rock-n-roll hair" - What a lyric :)
Just awesome! It fit so well!!!
Not only a great lyric, but here he sings “brosse” which is French for brush. Sly wit.
Look up the lyrics for "Cruiser". Another interesting reflection of what he saw in life. Ric wrote almost every song. The man had a flair for lyrics.
@@michaelwolf6424 which came out 1 year after the movie "Cruising"..it would've fit perfectly in that film.
Benjamin Orr was so handsome!!! Loved him!!!! Bye bye love loved that song!!!! He had such an incredible voice!!!! Miss him dearly 💔 rip Ben
Roxy Music mixed with the Velvet Underground!
A band with flair, economy and style!
Perfect!
David Robinsons drumming was precise and powerful!
So awesome! Ben you were so damn beautiful! A true rock god. I forgot elliot was a lefty. One of the all time great new wave bands!
wow, never saw this one, young, healthy, beautiful and at the top of their world.
Greg is absolutely on fire.
He didn’t just write the lyrics, he wrote all of it!
Good example of how integrated and seamless the Cars were.
That's nuts!
Very hard to believe the right-handed claim. It is visually more appealing, I agree. It's where Paul McCartney stood. Was he left-handed?
A wives tale...that the Cars wouldn't correct, they found it hilarious people spread it around.
Easton tells the story himself in a documentary. Was he lying?
Ben is definitely the best singer in the band!!!! And the best looking!!
100% agree I loved him as a teenager!
@@geowillia6325 💯 agree he was gorgeous - never seen another man that fine ❤️
he's so pretty
Тоже тащусь от него, хотя узнала о нём только недавно...)))
@@merry8545 Young Dave Gilmour was his equal. And Elvis.
Malcolm Brooks the late 70’s but the 70’s nonetheless. Candy-0 must was releas d close se to 1980.
Steven Koren - Yes I know when released. Cars ‘78 and Candy O in June ‘79. As I said 40 years ago
