@@shorthandable Last night I made the mistake of watching the last group interview only days before Ben's death... did my head in. Bad dreams all night. Don't watch it before going to bed! @@chris-in-oceania I have seen that interview, and while I can certainly see how it could be upsetting on the one hand, in the other I was happy that Benjamin and Ric mended fences before it really was too late.
Elliot Easton is the king of short guitar riffs. I swear you can play a few bars and quickly identify the song! I freaking love this band! RIP Benjamin Orr and Rick Ocasek. And to the rest of the band…we love you! Elliot I love your interviews!
The Cars were minimalists more than not. A flashy, show off drummer would've made them sound crap. Dave was right for them, especially in conjunction with Ben, who liked to throw in those occasional melodic licks, and could count on the beat staying steady while he did.
Although Ric and Benjamin are dearly missed I think we need to make sure we show our appreciation, admiration, and respect to Elliott, Greg and Dave because without them Ric and Benjamin couldn't have gave the WORLD their absolute BEST ❤️
I like it too when Elliot goes rockabilly. I couldn't believe this song when I first heard it on my local AM radio station late in '78. I thought, "Oh wow, this is 1956 guitar playing in a 70s song!" Elliot Easton is the kind of lead guitarist I always wanted to be: somebody who knows all of rock and roll's history and could speak every language it ever had. Wow, this still blows me away. The whole band was awesome.
I wholeheartedly agree with you westpoint64 Only difference for myself…is I wanted to play and sing (and be cool as heck) with my Bass just like Ben. Benjamin, Tina Weymouth, Peter Cetera and Paul McCartney were artists that inspired me to pick up the Bass. Each of them could thump their bass and sing amazingly sweet.
I can't praise Orr or Ocasek enough....but Eliot is rocking it on the guitar. Anyone who has picked up a guitar can appreciate his playing on this song.
Oh yeah. And he adjusts his style and guitar to the needs of the song. This is such an obvious Tele song, but he will play a Strat or Les Paul on other songs. But always very musical.

I don’t think a single one of them missed a note here. Elliot’s a guitar hero, Ben had the most melodic Voice whether singing Lead or Backup and was no slouch on the bass either, Greg the way he could lay keyboards melodies between the guitars is mind boggling, David not flashy, but one of the tightest sounding drummers ever, and Ric a songwriting genius….. @Starlet O’Hara - Well, once Benjamin got Greg and Elliot back in key! Also, this you’ve probably noticed, when Benjamin sees the camera is suddenly on him, at 1:23, his reaction is priceless! ( I think the camera shot goes to Benjamin at 1:21).

Wow, amazing live performances
So incredibly tight, an amazing bunch of top musicians.
What a fun clip. The boys are all sounding great here!
@Starlet O’Hara - Well, once Benjamin got Greg and Elliot back in key! If you watch closely after each of the first two “Here she comes again,” you’ll see Benjamin make a face, then glare at Greg, and when the second one goes awry, it’s Elliot’s turn!
Also, this you’ve probably noticed, when Benjamin sees the camera is suddenly on him, at 1:23, his reaction is priceless! ( I think the camera shot goes to Benjamin at 1:21).
They were genious. Best American rock band ever?
Grateful Dead
The Cars and The Fixx will always be a part of my musical life because of the great and very unique guitarists in them.
Shaboo Inn debut they played tunes over again for the encore. They only had one album out and there was about 50 people there....it was THE BEST! They hung out in the parking lot with us.
My brother was at that show, he still has the promo copy of the first album with the corner cut off. He was out there too hanging out, said they were great! Wish I was old enough at the time but back then the drinking age in CT was eighteen so he could go out to bars his entire senior year in high school!
Great band.....one of my Faves....RIP Benjamin
Elliot's Telecaster is awesome! Everyone wants a Strat, but sometimes a tele is perfect.
This tune always brings me back to the '70's - dayum, I'm old - when we had some great bands to check out, and the Cars being one of them. A great rockabilly tune, and EE is a monster player who made those licks fit like a glove for that song. RIP Ben and Rick.
