Sony was the God in recording live music in the 70s. The Budokan (built as a martial arts arena) has horrendous acoustics and somehow Sony captured the sound of Cheap Trick, so well that many other rock bands followed suit, equating a Budokan recording with great success.

I cannot with how great this band. There is no weak link. Every member purr class in their respective roles. The songs. The instrumentation. The presentation. They sound as fresh today as they did in the 70s. Absolutely no one is like Cheap Trick.
2:53 - "got my KISS records out" - that was Cheap Tricks homage to KISS for taking them out on tour in 1977 and giving them widespread coverage. Rick Nielsen sticks out his tongue !!!
There have been some legendary live concert albums from the 70a - Budokan, Frampton Comes Alive, KISS Alive, Hot August Night .... and many more. When Cheap Trick eventually released the full version of Budokan on 2 cds I snapped it up immediately
When I think of Cheap Trick Robin Zander mostly just standing there singing, Rick Nielson jumping all over the place, and Bun E. Carlos on the drums with a cigarette in his mouth. Love these guys!
A timeless classic; it's a special song for me. 1993 was the worst year of my life: in the space of 3 weeks I lost my mother to cancer and my long-term girlfriend dumped me. I think this song was re-released in the summer of that year, it was always on the radio in Boise, ID, where I was living at the time. It helped me through SO many dark, dark days...May God bless you, Cheap Trick, you'll never know how much good your music does for so many people.
Bunch of us in the break room at work 1 day, discussing just how deep into insanity our jobs were driving us. I couldn't HELP but start singing "Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright...", & EVERYONE joined in on "They just seem a little weird! Surrender! Surrender!". Quite a cathartic moment, I must say. Thank you, Cheep Trick, for supplying an anthem for those of us who jitter through our days with frazzled nerves & caffeine!
a few more minutes out....a Northwest Orient DC-10-40 in the descent/approach/landing pattern and lined up with the runway {Tokyo-Narita}.....on glideslope, looks good...bring her in, Captain, bring it home! ......touchdown @3:16 in the song and rollout, almost 2 miles of runway in full reverse thrust to slow the big bird down......taxi to the gate and block in.....Rick,Robin,Bun E. and Tom have arrived.....!
I was a teenage kid in the 70s and 80s. And this song really helped me to cope. This song was pretty cool. This is the first time that I have seen the band sing this particular song and it is just awesome.
At 14, this was the first vinyl album I wore out and had to buy again. Rick Nielson was a guitar god just looking for a home. Thankfully he found a power group of epic quality.
To my oldest sister who passed away December 14 2021 I remember you coming home from this concert at the Spectrum Philly with a concert teeshirt I wore it with such a huge smile I was so cool because you thought of baby brother and got me that shirt ! The most I love about the Budokon album is that these Illinois boys went there and sang like the were gonna die if they didn't. Did the people even understand English? Didn't matter if they did or not our boys here belted it out as if they did. Im 55 and I freaking love cheap trick and always will

That's kinda how he is NORMALLY, or at least was. He's slowing down a bit now, only puts in five miles of running during a concert instead of 20 that sort of thing.
MY BFF just passed away and Cheap Trick was her Favorite Band. We went to the Washington Concert 5 yrs ago. They Are the Best New Wave Band EVER. RIP: Kim
Cheap Trick was my sister’s favorite band in the 70s. Her gang loved them, while mine liked Lynryd Skynryd. Our home life wasn’t that great but listening to these songs only bring Good memories.
'Live at Budokan' was the biggest selling album ever up until Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' was released. Not sure where 'Live at Budokan' ranks today (maybe Frampton's 'Frampton comes Alive' surpassed it?), but I would not be surprised if its still got to have some pretty consistent sales numbers. Bun E, Carlos passed away, but the other three are still touring, great live act if you can catch them at a venue near you.
Weird, I got here from a re-run of "American Pickers". Frank and Mike bought some gear from Rick Nielsen that he had in a storage unit. It was souvenir shirts and some clothes he wore on stage that Rick had in a storage locker for decades. I was in HS during the 70's but wasn't into Cheap Trick, though I had plenty of friends that were. After catching these performances on RUclips, I can see what everyone was talking about. They're a great band and the music would have been right up my alley in HS. The availability of "Budokan Live" is what makes RUclips so great.
Rick Nielsen is one of the most solid rhythmic guitarists ever minted. In the late '70s-- excluding the fe, act8ually good punk rock bands-- Cheap Trick ruled the pop-rock world, no question.
I totally agree. I had the pleasure of seeing Cheap Trick quite a few years ago. I was about 21 or 22 years old. Saw rhem at a place called Selland Arena in Fresno, Ca. Don't remember the year(too much party)but they came with Eddie Money and Electric Light Orchestra. Was a killer concert. Was the only concert I ever got to go to with my wife who passed away at the age of 25 just a couple of years later, so this is a very precious memory for me. Now here I am 66 years old and I'm still listening to this. Good rock just never gets old or dies.
I was about 13 years old when this song came out and it blew us all away!!! Today it still makes me want to rock out!!!! Thanks for the great music Cheap Trick!!!!!!
Gotta love this album. Robin Zander relocated to the Tampa area many years back and he occasionally does interviews with the local TV media such as "Great Day Live Tampa Bay" and he said this tour in Japan was such an amazing experience. I just can not believe it all went down 41 years ago!
@@shawnaldrich7868 Time fucking flies doesn't it? 58 years old and I remember this song from the movie “Over the Edge”. I crank it up every time it comes on the speakers. 😊
..It is a song to break speakers on.
I cannot with how great this band. There is no weak link. Every member purr class in their respective roles. The songs. The instrumentation. The presentation. They sound as fresh today as they did in the 70s. Absolutely no one is like Cheap Trick.
Hi there, Good day to you and it's nice seeing you here.
My life's soundtrack. THANK YOU!!!
トムもロビンも王子様全開!!!!かっこよ過ぎ〜💖😍💓
今も好きっす😇
Drummer knows what he's doing.
Yes....and they fired him!
I believe Rick's son is now the drummer.
He fits perfectly well in this great song, this great performance and in the Cheap Trick' s peak
Bun E. Carlos is awesome drummer. Second only to Neil Peart.
He's always flawless
2:53 - "got my KISS records out" - that was Cheap Tricks homage to KISS for taking them out on tour in 1977 and giving them widespread coverage. Rick Nielsen sticks out his tongue !!!
I caught that too today, for the 1st time...funny!
Love that they punch it up w/ a key change @ 2:30 before sending it home ;)
There have been some legendary live concert albums from the 70a - Budokan, Frampton Comes Alive, KISS Alive, Hot August Night .... and many more. When Cheap Trick eventually released the full version of Budokan on 2 cds I snapped it up immediately
Don't forget Deep Purple Live In Japan too. I bought the double vinyl record in the 1970s.
“Surrender, surrender, but don’t give yourself away” ... this line seems to fit mysteriously well in Japanese postwar protest culture
😮😮😮😮
When I think of Cheap Trick Robin Zander mostly just standing there singing, Rick Nielson jumping all over the place, and Bun E. Carlos on the drums with a cigarette in his mouth. Love these guys!
Zander intentionally played it low key even stepping back to give the spotlight to his mates banging away.
Tom definitely nails it too.
Don't forget about the bass player Tom Peterson. Great guitarist and created the prototype for a 12 string bass.
@@Badrockstar84 Yes Tom Peterson. Always a strong backbone for Cheap Trick
I THINK OF HOME!!! Rockford Illinois Truly Rocks!

@@chrisduerden2084 hahahahaha...Why don't you grow up??
Life is a hard one, my man.
Sorry to hear about your mother.
As for your girlfriend, don't lose sleep over that . Go find another!
@@cristianhcm1914 Thanks for your nice comment, it WAS a tough year, but things have long been better. The best of luck to you too, my friend...
Мои кумиры!!! Море воспоминаний и положительных эмоций!!! Всем добра!!! 70-е в моём сердце до последнего его сокращения!!!
Thank you, Cheep Trick, for supplying an anthem for those of us who jitter through our days with frazzled nerves & caffeine!
this is probably one of the best performances in music history. absolutely awesome.
The best bands are ones which have great music and sound great live. Cheap Trick is one of them!!!
Never will we have bands like this, gotta love Cheap Trick, Thank you.
a few more minutes out....a Northwest Orient DC-10-40 in the descent/approach/landing pattern and lined up with the runway {Tokyo-Narita}.....on glideslope, looks good...bring her in, Captain, bring it home! ......touchdown @3:16 in the song and rollout, almost 2 miles of runway in full reverse thrust to slow the big bird down......taxi to the gate and block in.....Rick,Robin,Bun E. and Tom have arrived.....!
I was a teenage kid in the 70s and 80s. And this song really helped me to cope. This song was pretty cool. This is the first time that I have seen the band sing this particular song and it is just awesome.
🤘🤘🎸 🎸😊
I love Rick's style. Especially his facial expressions.
He's having so much FUN it really adds a killer vibe to the situation. Yep.
@@wildwoodsgirl1706 Energy as well.
Thank you Japan for bringing these guys into the limelight!
My heart is still broken your not here to listen to this song I hear it I will always think of you miss you so much your rocking in heaven to this !
That's sweet
I’ve seen them twice… I was supposed to see their 1982 show in LA, but the tickets I got from that Damone dude were counterfeit!
Cheap Trick is a fantastic band. Surrender is such a brilliant song. Cheap Trick forever!
THIS was in early 1978 Alot of people say the late 70s were disco LOL Ya right
I love it, from a German in vacation in Thailand, more than 45 years later. ❤❤❤
🤘🤘🎸
Such a terrific song! Never gets old.
🤘🤘🎸
The most I love about the Budokon album is that these Illinois boys went there and sang like the were gonna die if they didn't. Did the people even understand English? Didn't matter if they did or not our boys here belted it out as if they did.
Im 55 and I freaking love cheap trick and always will
Yes. Good on you.
OMG
I remember my mom had this album and when i was 7 -8 i wore out my moms album. I enjoyed listening to this over and over. That was 1977 - 1978.
Sweetness.
Hi there, Good day to you and it's nice seeing you here.
@Rick.A.Nielsen-Official
It's nice to see that you look at the comments. I saw you with Styx maybe about 25 years ago. Great show
@donnacarter2617 Hello Donna, good day to you and thanks for the compliment. And It is actually a pleasure to have you here. Well I know you must be surprised to receive a message from me right?
Respect to Tom Peterssen here...brilliant bassist, great stage presence....and he is very handsome....
I have a little man crush :)
Nothing wrong with that.
Is you gay?
@@chrischampagne4307 No, I 'isn't'
Am I? Nope, I'm straight. I find him an interesting and compelling person.
It would be more accurate to say I have a bass crush, a brilliant player
Love it how Rick is coked out of his mind but still playing a killer guitar
No coke then in Japan. Maybe speed tabs.
Speed tabs were everywhere then in Japan. Still are. Lol plus yeah. Hes looking more Tweaked out then Coked out in my expert opinion lmao
That's kinda how he is NORMALLY, or at least was. He's slowing down a bit now, only puts in five miles of running during a concert instead of 20 that sort of thing.
One of the greatest rock songs performed by the greatest garage band ever.
MY BFF just passed away and Cheap Trick was her Favorite Band. We went to the Washington Concert 5 yrs ago. They Are the Best New Wave Band EVER. RIP: Kim
🤘🤘🎸
Cheap Trick was my sister’s favorite band in the 70s. Her gang loved them, while mine liked Lynryd Skynryd. Our home life wasn’t that great but listening to these songs only bring Good memories.
I loved both bands! Growing up in the 60s and 70s was the best time with all the great music.
LIVE at The Budokan is a legendary LIVE Rock album!!!!!
It's an historical sign post.
In legend of the shadows! It's ironic and iconic
The 80s can kiss my hairy bum ,, lol The 70s kick ass way harder than the 80s EVER DID This was from early 1978 Boys n girls
Quite possibly the greatest live album ever laid to wax.
it's good but lets not get fucking carried away
@@edrader Huh? 😆 He's right
'Live at Budokan' was the biggest selling album ever up until Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' was released.
@@edrader Shut up let people be enthusiastic about things they love. Always some bitter jerk gotta rain on a parade
@@crosslink1493 Bun E's not dead???
Weird, I got here from a re-run of "American Pickers". Frank and Mike bought some gear from Rick Nielsen that he had in a storage unit. It was souvenir shirts and some clothes he wore on stage that Rick had in a storage locker for decades. I was in HS during the 70's but wasn't into Cheap Trick, though I had plenty of friends that were. After catching these performances on RUclips, I can see what everyone was talking about. They're a great band and the music would have been right up my alley in HS. The availability of "Budokan Live" is what makes RUclips so great.
No effects, other than (mabye) reverb. No processors. No pitch correction. No click track. No Stems.
My God, how good are these musicians?
As a 67 year old woman who listened to Carpenters, I loved this song and still do!!
You have your stripes. Good woman.
We're ALL alright! Best rock phrase ever!!
Love this so much! 57 year old here! Rick is the coolest goofy need boy! Robin is smokin' hot! We're all alright...even after all these years!
THAT'S ONE HEAVY ASS LIVE DRUM SOUND!!! ❤
Rick Nielsen is one of the most solid rhythmic guitarists ever minted. In the late '70s-- excluding the fe, act8ually good punk rock bands-- Cheap Trick ruled the pop-rock world, no question.
This is one of the best live albums of all times and produced so well. It was also my first album that I bought on my own.
love how they look like 3 different bands at once
Saw these guys live 10 years ago. Still have the same energy as they had then. Best concert I’ve been to.
The acoustics of this album capture the live concert hall so perfectly!
Incredible live - mix , i think no studio overdubs unlike for instance talking heads stop making sense
One of the best songs EVER writen
41 years? OMG how fucking old am i? 58 and this was new and killer in HS
@@shawnaldrich7868 Time fucking flies doesn't it? I remember me and my sister going to get this album at the mall and the newly opened Record Bar (another blast from the past) was sold out, so we made our older sister (we were way too young to drive then) and finally found it in a Woolco or K-Mart somewhere in North Tampa. Great damn album, at the time these guys and Van Halen were running neck and neck as my fave bands with Rush and Pink Floyd not too far behind.
I remember back in the 70's when I first heard Cheap Trick and thought to myself how weirdly different they sounded but here we are in 2024 and they still rock.
Yup/good lasts.. Great comment.
One of the greatest live albums ever
The lyrics to this song are sublime. True pop perfection!
Got my KISS records out too. 1979.
One of my favorites, brings back so many good, great memories from the past.
