Kind of how it played out when Rush broke out here in the US before being popular in Canada. Both great bands that just needed the right exposure. In Rush's case it was a dj in Cleveland and Cheap Trick it was of course this concert. Although Surrender was the first catalyst. Crazy, maybe we are in a big simulation lol.
My dad saw Cheap Trick open for some other band, they where so bad that they got booed off stage and he doesn’t remember the main band either because of how bad they where lol. Then they went off to Japan and made it big lol
I am 33 years old, from Germany and I listen to Rock Radio only. I NEVER heard the studio version of this song ever, the Budokan version is the "standard" of this song. Love it so much.
Just saw them at a local casino a few nights ago. Great concert! Same strong voice, same great music, even in their 70s. They have not lost their edge. One of the most underrated bands ever.
I think Budokan was the best live concert EVER... the studio version of this song is very tame - but this hard rocking version is legendary! This is the version I always heard on the radio, as a kid, and it made me a life-long fan❤
The Japanese media called them the "American Beatles". Even though their 1st 3 albums weren't big in the U.S. in Japan all 3 went gold and when they did this concert, it was like Beatlemania. After this concert, the world went nuts over Cheap Trick. Cheap Trick at Budokan was so popular, the record label had to make more albums of it to meet the demand. One of the legendary performances by a legendary band.
I remember how my sister and I had to put our names down on a list at the local Record Bar to get a copy of this great album because it was flying off the shelves so fast. Dubbed it onto a couple of TDK cassettes and wore them out pretty fast!
They always reminded me more of The WHo. Pretty boy blond lead singer, unattractive but very flamboyant lead guitarist, who wasn't really a great guitar player but put on one hell of a show.
Love the way Robin enunciated the title of the song and uses his hands to emphasize it...one of the best concerts captured on film...that one night they ruled the world
My husband of almost 31 awesome years just sent this to me. I love that he still flirts with me. Oh and we have 12 beautiful children! Thank you my love!
Yup. Man, the Cheap Trick/KISS tour in the 70's was insane energy. Budokan would have been a place to be to see that instead of Canada, but as concerts go, even Edmonton was an electric fire of a place to be.
Cheap Trick at Budokan is far more than simply the concert that revived a fading fast band on life support. It changed rock music forever. The live concert album could be that big and momentous. Cheap Trick had musical talent.
I have to respectfully disagree about the life support, for a band that was formed in 1973,Budokan was in 1978,5 little years, some bands take 10 years to hit it big (the lucky ones that do) and that after several member's coming and going,Budokan was more like their breakthrough to the masses after a few years, now if it had been 20 years later and they were playing dives and things like that and got a second chance then yeah, i would totally agree. I would say "Don't be cruel" has more a ring to what you originally were trying to convey, definitely put them back on the map, just my 2 cents.
This song will always have a special memory in my childhood. I was an 8th grader, we were at middle school trip to a local amusement park, 1979ish, Dorney Park, Allentown Pa. My group of guy friends were in line at a new ride called the Sea Dragon. It is the rocking/swinging "boat" ride that is often called the Pirate Ship. Anyway, it was a brand new ride with a lot of interest, a very long line. The "kids" who were running the ride had these massive dual 15" sub cabinets, maybe 6 of them up on the platform. They were pumping Cheap Trick I Want You. They keep blasting this song over and over again. They had it on repeat. It was the first time I heard this song, but it was the type of song you hear, and you immediately fall in love with. At this age music like this, with the guitars and drums, would give you chills down your back, I mean you were really feeling it. I don't know......like you felt immortal, you were young and had like a self-awareness moment, where you knew everything was fine, easy, stress free, abundant opportunities. There were also some girls in our group which added to the excitement and butterflies. It was 30 minutes of time that you don't forget. Thank you Cheap Trick.

I can testify to that. They absolutely KILL IT LIVE always have always will. Totally amazing group of rock musicians ❤. Closest I've seen to their talent live is maybe Aerosmith ❤💖☠️
Was little dude and loved this song. Mom told me I would just wiggle and then dance around to this song. Her one friend would come over and would garble the song to her. I still get so happy hear this song play.
Guess I'm old here!! Heard this song in the late '70's, when my older children were babies. This is the version I heard, and fell in love with; actually lead singer's voice. All these years, and he's still awesome!!
Back in the day I got records through the mail from Columbia House. Sometimes if I didn't mail the opt out form back I got an album sent automatically. I remember getting Cheap Trick Live at the Budokan this way. I thought what the hell is this I never heard of them, but rather than going through the hassle of returning it I put it on the turn-table fully expecting to be disapointed. I think it was a week later I listened to side two, I was so blown away by side one I just kept playing it.
Ahhh, the days of Columbia House!! Soooooo many memories! 😍😍😍 I came to hear this because this is my best friends first Birthday above. I wish she were here. Shed have gotten a good laugh thinking back to our Columbia House days.
That butter commercial is burned on my brain! THIS is what I remember! Thanks Cheap Trick! I hope you are making a billion $! Sadly, I doubt it. Every time I see or hear the butter commercial, I am sharing this with someone else.
High School, 1979. Cheap Trick, Areosmith, CCR, Clapton, Alice Cooper, Carlos Santana and Jerry Garcia...good times. [edit] Boudikan was a good album. Surrender - I want you to want me. Bunny Calos nailed those drums.
1979 was the year for The Knack , BLONDIE , THE Clash , Ramones , THE Cars , THE Police , Rod Stewart , Earth Wind and Fire , Boston , Donna Summer , Bee Gees , Elvis Costello & THE Attractions..........so very many great bands..............GOOD TIMES 4ALL

Was there San Diego, '82...so fabulous!! Get as close to the stage as you can..see and hear better!!!😂😂 Now my daughter loves this song...of course it's one of the greatest songs ever!! The performance was more than you thought it could be!! 😎💫
I'll never forget being 5 yrs old...my parents got a neighborhood babtsitter, who happened to be a cheerleader at Bedford school. The cheerleader had a few friends come over to "party" while she babysat me and my sister. All I remember is this sing blaring as she did back-handsprings down the long hall. Next thing I recall....she was in the bathroom puking, lol! I remember being SO enthralled with her no matter what, and this song has remained a favorite of mine since that night... And I'm 50 yrs old now!! The relation of songs and the memory you hold is unparralled!!!!
Yeah I remember hearing this song for the first time in the 1980s and I had never heard a studio version so I wondered where it came from. One of my all time favs.
Loved these guys especially this song in Japan. In 2024 the 1st lines of this great song is spokenn on a TV ad. I knew right away it was it was CHEAP TRICK !!!
Summer of '79, just finished my A-Levels, summer was here and Cheap Trick blasting at full volume across the school playing fields. Will never forget these guys. Genius.
Some old dude probably worked at that place 30 years sweeping the floors of trash at the end of the night. Little did he know, on that fateful night, he would be sweeping womens panties up and mopping all the floors without the need for a bucket of juice.
Yeah, these guys were grinders. Always touring, always playing even small venues a night or two at a time. They earned my respect with that attitude. Originally I dismissed them as a flash in the pan playing sounding like 60s bubble gum pop. And then they kept at it for another 50 years and carved out a piece of rock n roll topography for themselves.
@@radman1136 They still are. I, most unfortunately, missed seeing them out here (where I live) very recently. I'd like to see them again before I die. Um... also, 50's & 60's bubble gum pop was kinda neat! (Joey Ramone dug it☺️)
when this came out, it was one of the most popular albums ever. There was nothing but great songs on the entire album. We wore out a bunch of 8-tracks cruising around in my '70 Olds in north Jersey..
I stared at that album cover front to back a million times when I was a kid listening to this and imagining this concert in my minds eye. Here I am 40 years later actually seeing it ! The magic of the internet!
as a 14 year old surrounded by the music of today, this is still my favorite song, it gives a whole different feeling and everything about cheap trick & especially this song is so dreamy and amazing ngl
My wife gave birth to my first born chanting this song (it was stick in her head), so now, 21 years later, we are "Cryin', cryin', cryin'!" everytime it pops up.
Cheap Trick was my SECOND concert, in 1986. They had been around forever by that time. 37 years ago they had already been around a long time. It was excellent. "The Flame" was getting lots of radio play.
Never heard of Cheap Trick until I got to college. They were playing on campus, and tickets were next to nothing. Their show was amazing, still remember that night, 40 plus years!
Great song because I want YOU to want ME, I remember when this song came out I was on my way to the beach, it was an awesome summer! I saw them in Austin, Texas. I've said it before and I will say it again "If you got to grow up anywhere in the 50's through the 80's with all the golden classic movies & music, YOU were blessed!"
The first few words to this great song are said slowly on a TV ad with 2 people obviously in love as NOW, October 2024...I had to think back as I'm 70 and then I got it...we friends back in the day would yell to each other " IT'S CHEAP TRICK, LIVE AT BUDOKAN". Definitely the best LIVE recorded album ever. PS keep a look out for the commercial as it's quick but classy w/ those music memories my generation is so lucky to have. 💕😻😊
Every Japanese person attending that concert knew they were witnessing something spectacular. A band at their peak, with a string of hits. At a famous venue.
I've never been a huge CT fan, but this was on a 2 CD classic rock compilation I had growing up, and it's so timeless that it's been covered by so many artists, from Dwight Yoakam to Hanson. There's also a holiday version Cheap Trick did called "I Want You for Christmas", which is really cute on its own; it starts out slow, but once it goes into the "Budokan" arrangement, I can't help but rock out during the holiday season!
I saw them just after the Budokan album around 79 80 and they were huge. It is still the LOUDEST show I ever saw and my ears rang for 3 days. I was sitting about 8 rows back and as the words"Ladies and Gentlemen, are u ready " screamed out, I was surged toward the stage as a tidal wave of people came surging from the back. It was an unbelievable show. I remember one encore song was Day Tripper and that described it all perfectly!!
Yup they were loud when they were headlining. I first saw them in 1977 when they opened for KISS, but the second time I saw them was in 1979 at Spartan Stadium in San Jose, CA They played 3rd bill with Pat Travers and Blue Oyster Cult, and I remember as Rick came onstage he said “Hey were gonna play a little bit longer today, is that ok with you” and about 35,000 roared their approval!!!!!! They played for about one hour and twenty minutes. Came back for 2 oncore’s playing “Just got back and Day Tripper” I’ve seen them live maybe 25 times, but that was the best and loudest concert I’ve ever seen them do.
@@bartonpercival2147 Wow Barton u are a devoted fan. 25 times!!! I live in NZ and seen them only twice sadly. It was surreal to be only 3 or 4 feet away from them and because of their status after the Budokan album, they were rock gods like The Beatles. I was off my face as well. making it more surreal. They had to get the Mayor of Auckland City to come in and try to quell the crowd as people were jumping everywhere up in the rafters. It was recorded as 110 decibels. We are only 5million people but we love to rock down here. When The Foos played here a few years ago on one of their many tours here, the first ever seismic underground wave was recorded in history. The band is proud of that. It was a crowd of 50,000 but we get right into it and lots get high too. Yes Cheap Trick are icons. I just love Rick Neilsen, his raw sound and his image is unique. Thanks mate!
@@dannymiles6503 Wow 110 decibels that’s insane. It’s great to know that great music is enjoyed and loved throughout the world. I was just a young teenager when the Beatles invaded America, but after Cheap Tricks Budokan show, I kinda felt like I understood the mania surrounding the Beatles. Cheers indeed mate!!!!!! 👍
I got to see them a few years back at a small venue in Southern Maryland. It was INSANE! Robin’s voice is so freaking strong still. I was covering the concert for our local paper so I had unrestricted press credentials. I stood between security and the stage so Robins voice would be heard even over the amps. Got a few guitar picks which was great. Robin is still so damn handsome! My skirt would have came off in a split second if he’d of looked at me.
Cheap Trick played throughout my childhood. From the 1st album all the way up to my senior year in high school. I've lived some of the greatest times of my life with Cheap Trick playing in the background. When they would be on TV I would never miss it. Rick Nielson is my favorite and I am also a guitar player. Rick was like Ace Ventura with a guitar. He was the coolest dork everyone wanted to meet. Awesome band to this day.
The greatest, most transcendent performance of the greatest song in rock history (alongside all of the other greatest songs in history). Pure, unrestrained brilliance.

@@enigmalfidelity If you are an ACDC fan, look into a paperback book- Rock"N" Roll Fantasy by Susan Masino. It might be out of print, but yes, I was there throughout, bartending in the best eras
Das nennt man Musik , nicht so was wie heutzutage
I do and I'm 60 Years old
This is by far the best performance of this song ever recorded
i wore out the 8 track when i was a teenanger.....they are one of the best rock bands ever..
The crowd was awesome. Made a great song even better. Kudos to the lively audience at Budokan! 😀
Budokan!
Probably their best tune 🎉❤
This live version just show's how good they are!
@@kyddshine I danced around the house to this with my son as a toddler 20+ years ago! We would laugh and dance and spin around! Great memory 😁
Rick is such a badass player and showman, always loved them live , they really came to life on stage
Erinnerung an eine tolle Jugend , Unbeschwertheit , die Beste Zeit die
wir je hatten. Ich erinnere mich immer wieder gerne dran .
@patty 🤘🤘🎸 🎸 😊
Guess I'm old here!! Heard this song in the late '70's, when my older children were babies. This is the version I heard, and fell in love with; actually lead singer's voice.
All these years, and he's still awesome!!
I've met the bass player and almost got up close to ROBIN ZANDER.
How close did you get?
Back in the day I got records through the mail from Columbia House. Sometimes if I didn't mail the opt out form back I got an album sent automatically. I remember getting Cheap Trick Live at the Budokan this way. I thought what the hell is this I never heard of them, but rather than going through the hassle of returning it I put it on the turn-table fully expecting to be disapointed. I think it was a week later I listened to side two, I was so blown away by side one I just kept playing it.
olderthandadirt just wondering do you still have that vinyl?
What a great memory! Sounds like something I would have done. I too, belonged to Columbia House. It was a staple of the late 70s...
Ahhh, the days of Columbia House!! Soooooo many memories! 😍😍😍 I came to hear this because this is my best friends first Birthday above. I wish she were here. Shed have gotten a good laugh thinking back to our Columbia House days.
Freaking awesome! Thanks for sharing :)
Record clubs got a bad rep because of idiots not returning the card.
But, man, you could really load up on music cheaply.
That butter commercial is burned on my brain! THIS is what I remember! Thanks Cheap Trick! I hope you are making a billion $! Sadly, I doubt it. Every time I see or hear the butter commercial, I am sharing this with someone else.
I've watched a lot of live shows. Iron Maiden, Eagles, Pink Floyd, Styx...I always wished I was there for this masterpiece.
❤❤❤
This is a song that will never go out of style, beautiful song.
High School, 1979. Cheap Trick, Areosmith, CCR, Clapton, Alice Cooper, Carlos Santana and Jerry Garcia...good times.
[edit] Boudikan was a good album. Surrender - I want you to want me. Bunny Calos nailed those drums.
@🤘🤘🎸 🎸 😊
1979 was the year for The Knack , BLONDIE , THE Clash , Ramones , THE Cars , THE Police , Rod Stewart , Earth Wind and Fire , Boston , Donna Summer , Bee Gees , Elvis Costello & THE Attractions..........so very many great bands..............GOOD TIMES 4ALL
Good old days 😂 70s
大好きでしたね。メンバー皆若くてあの頃はファンも熱狂的でした。今も好きです☺️
One of the most iconic live performances of all time! They deserve EVERY bit of their Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame induction. Thank you, guys, for all the great music!
Agreed! Perhaps even the most iconic...
@@Rob4617 Indeed, could be. I also like "Enter Sandman" - Metallica, live in Moscow, & "Comfortably Numb" - Pink Floyd, live "Pulse" concert. Thanks for your reply.
im glad my selectrions help tears in my eyes rt now.from old memory..
@@gabrielluna-o6p You were THERE! Awesome!
Rock and roll hall of fame is a Hollywood joke, they put gangster rappers instead of actual legendary rock bands
Was there San Diego, '82...so fabulous!! Get as close to the stage as you can..see and hear better!!!😂😂 Now my daughter loves this song...of course it's one of the greatest songs ever!! The performance was more than you thought it could be!! 😎💫
Jesus!!! Just wow!!! 1979!? Talk about timeless...must of played this 50 times this weekend!!!
Good morning sweet heart
I listen to song at least 700 times never get bored of this song it way up there of anthem rock pop songs
🎂Happy 70th birthday, Robin🎉 The song reminds me of my younger days. Your Live at Budokan is very, very special to us.
Love and Thanks from 🇯🇵Japan.
🤘🤘🎸 🎸 😊
It's 2024. Still loving Cheap Trick.
I'm 56 and remember them in Jr. High school, good stuff. I always liked Cheap Trick 👍.
My 1st concert...1980 Boise Idaho
13 yrs old...Molly Hatchet rocked too!!!!!
Saw them perform this in concert on June 30, 1979 in Shreveport, LA!! ❤🎶
@🤘🤘🎸 🎸 😊
Budokan really propelled these guys into the Stratosphere - they are truly great!
Yeah I remember hearing this song for the first time in the 1980s and I had never heard a studio version so I wondered where it came from. One of my all time favs.
It’s crazy to think how this is the definitive version that everyone hears of this song when the album version no one even thinks of.
I'm 59 and have been playing drums for 35+ years.
Cheap Trick is always on my agenda with who ever I play with ...
Great stuff!
Loved these guys especially this song in Japan. In 2024 the 1st lines of this great song is spokenn on a TV ad. I knew right away it was it was CHEAP TRICK !!!
Butter commercial.
I saw these guys at a flippin roller skating rink in Muskegon Michigan right around 1980
This version is so damn good that I can honestly say that I have never heard the studio version. Nobody plays it. Ever. It's always this version.
There's very few bands that are better live , and Cheap Tricks 1 of em
One of the greatest Rock n Roll songs ever written and needs to be live to be fully appreciated. These guys are all geniouses.
A masterpiece!🌹💝🌹💝🌹💝🌹💝🌹💝🌹💝🌹💝🌹💝🌹💝🌹💝🌹💝🌹💝🌹💝🌹💝🌹💝🌹💝🌹💝🌹💝
Summer of '79, just finished my A-Levels, summer was here and Cheap Trick blasting at full volume across the school playing fields. Will never forget these guys. Genius.
when live performance is best version of this song, it says a lot about quality of band and voices behind it... amazing
(Joey Ramone dug it☺️)
The studio version is so puny in comparison.
Maybe the studio version was really bad.
when this came out, it was one of the most popular albums ever. There was nothing but great songs on the entire album. We wore out a bunch of 8-tracks cruising around in my '70 Olds in north Jersey..
One of the greatest live albums ever made
Day On The Green, '80. Awesome!!! Wouldn't have known anything about them, but for the Live at Budokan album
I stared at that album cover front to back a million times when I was a kid listening to this and imagining this concert in my minds eye. Here I am 40 years later actually seeing it ! The magic of the internet!
映画音楽やクラシックを聴いていた自分にとって、cheap trickとの出会いは正にROCKの目覚めでした。ハードな中にもポップさが混在しており、最高のROCKバンドと言えるでしょう。
Growing up to this band i want you to want me. Cheap trick was one of my favorite bands.
🤘🤘🎸 🎸 😊
as a 14 year old surrounded by the music of today, this is still my favorite song, it gives a whole different feeling and everything about cheap trick & especially this song is so dreamy and amazing ngl
Sammeeee and I’m 15 but since that was a year ago you are to 😂😂
I'm 16 and sence that was a year ago!!!!🤯
Ur 16/17 now
My all time favorite song too!!!
You have good taste in music bro.
My wife gave birth to my first born chanting this song (it was stick in her head), so now, 21 years later, we are "Cryin', cryin', cryin'!" everytime it pops up.
Will always be the 'speed skaters only" song from our local skating rink in South Miami 1980's "Sunshine Skateway"
One of the Greatest Live Bands Ever.
Cheap Trick is fanFu$$ingtastic!
This is like one of the few songs played repeatedly on the radio that was live instead of the studio version.
Not a fan of the studio version..too slow...the live version is so much better
@@kenwilliams9539 and too mellow, it sounds like an ice cream parlor, if that makes ense
Along with Claptons Cocaine and Kiss Rock n Roll all Night and Party Every Day
Cheap Trick was my SECOND concert, in 1986.
@kylie 🤘🤘🎸 🎸 😊
The hometown heroes of Rockford Illinois!!
1980 I went to their concert and their backup band was Loverboy! It was amazing then and it's still amazing today! Love them ❤

This has got to be one of the greatest rock and roll concerts in history!
チープトリック最高です✨😊❤
Cheap Trick played throughout my childhood. From the 1st album all the way up to my senior year in high school. I've lived some of the greatest times of my life with Cheap Trick playing in the background. When they would be on TV I would never miss it. Rick Nielson is my favorite and I am also a guitar player. Rick was like Ace Ventura with a guitar. He was the coolest dork everyone wanted to meet. Awesome band to this day.
The 70s was the era of concert albums, Peter Frampton, KISS, and Cheap Trick led the charge.
