Greg Hawkes keyboard playing is what got me hooked on the Cars. I'll always say his sound was what made the Cars. When I first heard It's All I Can Do I wanted to know who was making that sound on the keyboard and I was a drummer.
16 in '78. What a time to be alive! Styx, Devo, Supertramp, Boston, ELO, Foreigner, The Knack, The Cars... Hang'n out with friends and watching Saturday Night Live with Gilda Radner, John Belushi, John Candy- and Mr. Bill.
Agreed!!! They were awesome in late 70's and early 80's,but then they just became way too "Pop" in 84' with their album "Heartbeat City"!!! From there,it was just all downhill!!!
menom7 And the most awesome thing to me, I had this one Candy-O but on 8 track!!🖒what an high fidelity that sounded to me!!! some of the best memories!!
I was 17 years old when this album was out. I had a 1971 Plymouth Duster with an under-dash cassette player. I loved this album "Candy-O" and I played this cassette version so much, it ragged out and I had to buy another one from the record store! All of you are correct when you say that those were the days and music was awesome. I am glad I lived it.
Heh, isn't that funny. I was also 17 when this album came out and I had a four-door 1970 Dodge Dart (which was more or less basically the same car as the Duster). Mind you, I didn't have a tape deck in the car as I couldn't yet afford one. And I had to make do with listening to 'Candy-O' on my parents' stereo until I could afford one of my own in early 1982 with money I'd saved from working in a stereo shop.
I also was 17 when this came out and had a lime green 71 Plymouth duster,,,, but I had a 8 track tape player with the mind blower speakers ,,,wish I was still there. 57 ,,, does not seem that great ,,,, to me
The cars were a phenomenon. The first two albums were revolutionary and spellbinding cause they had that MAGIC sound and were literally addictive to kids like us. We would listen to those records over and over and over.
4 decades later and I still love this music. In the seventies I was listening to Sabbath, Rush, Kiss, Zeppelin, Motorhead, Floyd, UFO, Stones, Iron Maiden, etc. Then comes along this New Wave band and blows me away. What great songs. RIP Benjamin Orr, your music lives on!!!
Skipping school and riding around in a jacked up Nova with air shocks , passing a joint around and figuring out whose house to go to that the parents weren't home so we could hang out for the day.
It'd be awesome if you were kin to James Wiedemann from Flatonia TX, but somehow I don't feel that's gonna happen. You're right however, candy O was genius. I am still listening to CARS thru ALEXA!!!!!!
Amazing that two of the best groups of the late 70's, early 80's came out with debut albums in 1978. The Cars, and Van Halen. Music was damn good back in those days, thankfully I was there to hear, and see it happen. Great music to cruise around to, meet the girls, party and just have fun. What a great era.
I remember choosing (Old man said he'd only buy one) between these three albums: Van Halen (first record), Cheap Trick (live at budokan), and The Cars. How's that for choices!? those were the days. I chose Cheap Trick but eventually got them all. 😎
I absolutely adore this song, and how it shifts gears at the chorus and goes harder edged & oddly dark for the hook, and then for the end of the track.
And this is why I get annoyed when people act like Ric couldn't sing at all, he nails it here. I agree Ben had a better voice but Ric could sing damn well too.
vocals is but one gift a performer can use to express the music within. They all had a uniqueness that contributed to push them to the top back in the 80s. A nerdy group that absolutely rocked.
Totally agree bro. Eliot Easton was never even talked about. The Cars had their own sound, which is hard for any band to say, and they need to be in the Hall of Fame. It really is a shame.
Yes he did. It was called Change no Change. There are songs on YT from that album. Wide Awake, Tools of Your Labor, Walk on Walden. The Album was technically acclaimed in places but just never took off I think due to the Record Company not promoting much...which is a shame. Personally I like the songs on the album and Elliott is a great musician
I used to play this song as a teen on my turntable and many years later it still gives me goosebumps. Everytime I watch this video, I end up mesmerized by the climatic conclusion of the song. On their first 2 albums, the Cars were way ahead of their time. Thankfully, MTV wasn't around yet. I was a DJ then and remember following an evening of playing horrible disco songs (to make people dance), I would later get home and play the Cars in order to get my senses back.
Elliott Easton killed it on this song! David on the drums 👌 A fantastic sound that defined The Cars. So glad I grew up in the 80's and had these guys to listen to!
i commented months ago to say THIS is my very favorite song of any type by any band of all time (and i'm a 48 yr old professor with a huge collection and very picky taste) -- it's so gratifying to see so many young people recognizing how special the cars are/were and so much fun to see people posting/playing this masterpiece day to day... thanks to all of you and slance for originating
One of the best songs these guys ever put together. (along with 'Its All I Can Do') I was in high school when the Cars albums were released, and we just never knew how lucky we had it having such talented & quality fresh music coming out. History will prove that The Cars was an INCREDIBLY talented band. Originality, vocals/harmonies, composition and arrangement, lyrics, you name it. Just another one of those things where it all lined up and magic happened.
Wow,I was 14 years old when the first two albums from The Cars changed my life. I hadn't heard this song in many years and I must say it aged extremely well. No digital alteration or anything of that kind, just pure musical talent. The harmony and build up are also quite striking. Why aren't there bands of that quality anymore???
These guys were so hip as the worm turned in the music industry in the late 70’s . I used to go to an after hours club in those days. This tune exemplifies those times. Makes my hair stand up, and runs a chill up my spine. What an amazing, amazing tune. One of the faces of the New Wave era.
A lot of key elements make The Cars sound what it is. The churning cauldron of sound that is David Robinson's drums, sleek guitar from Elliott Easton, and especially those keyboards that were second-to-none from Greg Hawkes. All bubbling and crackling behind those incredible lyrics and quirky delivery of Ric Ocasek and the smooth touch of Ben Orr.
My great singer and icon. RIP Ric and Ben. You will be missed but you're music is here and eternal. Thanks for all the great Cars music and leaving us your beat and efforts.
One of my favorite Cars songs! Can I Touch You? Are you Out of Touch? I guess I never noticed that much! Brilliant lyrics! Thanks Ric! RIP Ric and Ben! This feels like the day the music died. Sad! 😭
Seen alot of concerts in the late 1970s and most of the 1980's, I wished I would have seen The Cars then. Would have liked to seen Queen in concert too. My parents got to see The Beatles back in 1965.
The Cars were so good about each one knowing their limits and their role. Tic sang the songs that were right for his voice and ditto Ben. Meanwhile they stayed back when Elliott had his solos and let him shine. Rick wasn't an ego maniac and knew his limits a a guitarist and singer, that's what made the Cars great.
They really changed or helped change the face of music with their first two albums , they were the first new wave band to garner fans from both sides of the fence , but 78,79,80 were amazing pivotal years , the knack, joe Jackson, B’52’s, XTC, Bram tchovsky, the Brilliant Manfred Mann angel station also dropped, Ultravox, ELO was still making decent music, Tom petty came on the scene, Ian hunter never alone with a schitzophrenic, Amazing time to live in
the first two cars albums are the best. i played the hell out of this album when i first got it. my best friend and i used to turn this song up really loud and we were always amazed at elliot easton's guitar work and david robinson's drum fills in the last minute or so of the song. i agree with a previous comment -- this is one of those songs where you HAVE to hear the studio version. it's mesmerizing!
We have a Rockwiz show here in Australia; the lead singers from Operator Please and Little Red sang Just What I Needed, gr8 duet; we may just get musos to focus and write good stuff, as soon as they leave the industrial noise behind.
This generation only produces sameness. Creativity died with the millennials and additional nails are being driven by generation Y or whatever the next one is being called. Creativity requires one to take a risk and with everyone watching everyone else and ready instantly to 'call out' any type of deviation or alternative viewpoint, these generations march in a straight line. And music suffers for it. No, there is no equivalent of Ric Ocasek. Current music all sounds alike and even the performers look and dress similarly. What a bunch of drones. I too am glad I lived through better times, musically and in many other ways.
Amazing song, wonderfully written. Few songs have a build up which leads to a climatic moment like this one. It must have been wonderful to be in your 20s and to have such rich material to play live.
Awesome song. Ric has always tripped me out on this song with his string plucking 'dink dink...dink dink...dink dink...dink dink...doo doo doo doo.' So simple, yet so good. Loved the Ben O on Candy O too!
My all time favorite, band, went to see them in El Paso at 18 yrs. Since then everything they came out, even solo albums are in my record collection. I even have a recording of the promotion comercial from the radio. Just flat out the hottest band in the world, the Cars. M

The Cars knocked it out of the park with their Softmore album "Candy-O", proving they were a band to be reconged with. A incredibly unique sound and the most cohesive album they ever put out.
Rap and hip hop can't possibly compete with this phenomenal legendary band ,A few years ago I got to meet Elliott Easton ,I got the pictures to prove it ,check out Stratocaster jam session,he was one of the greatest musicians I've Ever Encountered.
Eddie Miller ......please quit comparing genres competively....it makes you look stupid....it's true the cars were a killer band with fantastic writing and great musicianship and vocals......maybe Motzart and Ludwig would hold a opposing opinion.....seriously.....btw,for the open minded listener,ALL music has something good to offer....so quit talking like an idiot....ok?
Eddie Miller Ric did a bunch of recording in millbrook, and I haven’t seen him yet but he gets spotted in alot of stores around here with his family on the weekends.
Living proof that 80's keyboard players actually believed that they were musicians and that guys like Ben were always the diamond in the rough that carried a good rock tune.
Some were musicians, Mike Score of Flock of Seagulls is the prototype for "Look, I'm pressing one key for the entire tune" non-musician. Greg Hawkes was okay, but I taught my granddaughter the keyboard line from "The Cruiser" when she was 3. She played along on her playschool xylophone.
Right on, I cannot remember how many time we listened to Candy-O over and over and over. The way the songs just roll into one another, a masterpiece in my book! Definetly one of the best albums of all time on my list.
There are lots of artists today who are only good in the studio and horrible performers. After American Idol, people now appreciate technically good singers. They'd do great today, at least in the rock scene. You couldn't deny that much talent no matter what the decade.
Before internet - people rocked on 2 feet - and the phone is Bolted to the wall by the bathroom - Hi !!! Yes - we need it again - Busy bodies today need their asszs tanned - resort to hallmark greeting cards
Seeing this video when I was younger inspired me to buy a Dean Cadillac. Pat Travers played one back in the day too...along with several other popular guitarists in the late '70's-early '80's.
No wonder they gained so much recognition. They were very original, a style of their very own. You can't mistake The Cars for anyone else. This has to be one of the greatest bands EVER! Thanks for sharing this video, it really takes me back, and makes me long for younger days.
being in high school when this album came out makes me feel so fortunate to have been young and hanging out with friends listing to music like this.. nothing against todays youth but i would much rather have memories of hanging out listening to the cars than any of todays music.
Great music from now hall of famers. Damn how I miss their music...grew up on it in the late 70s and early 80s...well done all of you, you deserve the accolades.
underrated band. Ben had this voice that was unique. Its all Rick here but just a fun band who sounded 50s with best friends girl but were so ahead of the times in some ways they were 80s back in the 70s. Just a cool band..
I am 28. Always listened to the Cars, in part because of my parents. But my parents never knew how much they rocked. One of my fave songs on Candy-O. That album is filled with greats
This IS one of my faveorite Cars songs. And yes, I have to agree with the person that said the drumming toward the end of the song IS phenomenal! They were way ahead of their time. Long live The Cars... Ben Orr:Rest in Peace.
I had a '71 Porsche 914 and played that cassette (Candy -O ) all the way from Portland Oregon to Butte Montana. Each song was a uncharted musical experience. Man those days.
Sirius RushFan I agree, Ben Orr was a huge part of that band and I miss him as well. The Cars wet and always will be a great band even if they didn't fit in with what was going on around them. They still made great albums and music.
Greg Hawkes keyboard playing is what got me hooked on the Cars. I'll always say his sound was what made the Cars. When I first heard It's All I Can Do I wanted to know who was making that sound on the keyboard and I was a drummer.
Yes. Greg has that special quality that makes you want to check him out...💥🎹
His keyboards at the very end of this song are brilliant and captivating.
One of their very best! RIP Ric & Ben

I just never get tired of the Cars.... And Especially the Dangerous type. Sounds just as good today as it did 30+ years ago.
I agree! I love Candy-O too! Takes me back to college days. They are still awesome.

Dude this rocks. There was nothing like the freshness and edginess of the late 70’s
I’m proud to say I bought Candy-O the day it came out. Oh Lord I wish it was 1979 again.
I was 17 years old when this album was out. I had a 1971 Plymouth Duster with an under-dash cassette player. Elliott Easton is a very under rated lead guitarist
Yes, Great mix of styles: rock, new wave, punk, surf, rock-a-billy etc and great phrasing.
Simply amazing music from this band. Love them forever.
There's a great RUclips interview with him and his guitars
For sure. For an 80s pop guy he was so melodic. Almost in a class by himself for that.
Slash recently cited him as an influence.
Candy-O, simply genius. Just one of those albums I could never get tired of.
It'd be awesome if you were kin to James Wiedemann from Flatonia TX, but somehow I don't feel that's gonna happen. You're right however, candy O was genius. I am still listening to CARS thru ALEXA!!!!!!

Eliot Easton was a very under-appreciated rock guitarist. He reminds me a little of Mike Campbell from The Heartbreakers.
Oscar Banuelos No doubt! Mike Campbell ROCKS!

Eddie Miller
Ric did a bunch of recording in millbrook, and I haven’t seen him yet but he gets spotted in alot of stores around here with his family on the weekends.
Still sounds great today!
This is a very well written song. And, unless you haven't heard, "EIGHTIES ARE SACRED"!
So what are you saying? An 80's keyboard player like Keith Emerson wasn't a musician?
Emerson was great ... I'd put him in the 70's (?).
So I guess you've never seen Greg play the saxophone or guitar, don't need to be a musician to play those either I suppose.
oldsarge101 Greg Hawkes was a musician...
Right on, I cannot remember how many time we listened to Candy-O over and over and over. The way the songs just roll into one another, a masterpiece in my book! Definetly one of the best albums of all time on my list.
The Cars wouldn't make it today because they had too much raw talent and not enough fakeness.
Today its about being performers rather than musicians and how many followers you have on social media than talent.
True Fact.
There are lots of artists today who are only good in the studio and horrible performers. After American Idol, people now appreciate technically good singers. They'd do great today, at least in the rock scene. You couldn't deny that much talent no matter what the decade.
Really? Pear Jam, Metallica, Chris Stapleton, five finger death punch, Disturbed, the late, great Chris Cornel. Fake??
Before internet - people rocked on 2 feet - and the phone is

Hi !!! Yes - we need it again -
Busy bodies today need their asszs tanned - resort to hallmark greeting cards
Seeing this video when I was younger inspired me to buy a Dean Cadillac. Pat Travers played one back in the day too...along with several other popular guitarists in the late '70's-early '80's.
This song and "It's All I Can Do" are my two favorites from this band.
But they had lots of great tunes.
Most underrated band for sure.
Haha most definitely those two are my favorite songs
+thegonz9 they toured with Foreigner when their first album came out.
sorry Foreigner, The Cars were way better...
+Mubble Traker Couldn't agree more.
This group of guys exemplified my high school years. Their songs are timeless and their standard of excellence is appreciated. Welcome to the HOF!!!
CANDYO is my favorite LP. RIC we miss you already. Will be listening all week. Swing by and say hey. You went to school with my aunts. Yes the twins.
RIP Ric. Thanks for all of the great music!
I wish I could've seen them live. ❤️ Their performances are amazing!
Hearing this song brings me back to being a kid. Better times, better music.
I had a Cars poster on my wall.
Great band :)
No wonder they gained so much recognition. They were very original, a style of their very own. You can't mistake The Cars for anyone else. This has to be one of the greatest bands EVER! Thanks for sharing this video, it really takes me back, and makes me long for younger days.
The Cars saved rock & roll for me! It was the height of the disco era and all us rockers thought it was over...then along comes The Cars!
This band defined an era. I miss that time. Of course I'm going to miss this time in 30 years as well.
being in high school when this album came out makes me feel so fortunate to have been young and hanging out with friends listing to music like this.. nothing against todays youth but i would much rather have memories of hanging out listening to the cars than any of todays music.
Very few bands Achieve this level of phenomenal Success!
ROCK 🎸 ON!!
Just a cool band..
yea- just think of all the utterly brilliant, instantly recognizable guitar riffs that these guys came up with. very very talented group. i love them.
Absolutely OUTSTANDING...!!!
R.I.P Ric Ocasek this happens to be one of my favorite songs by the cars
I had a '71 Porsche 914 and played that cassette (Candy -O ) all the way from Portland Oregon to Butte Montana. Each song was a uncharted musical experience. Man those days.
love the cars..one of the first rock bands i ever really loved..
***** Same here man. Loved the Cars too. Still miss Ben O.
Sirius RushFan I agree, Ben Orr was a huge part of that band and I miss him as well. The Cars wet and always will be a great band even if they didn't fit in with what was going on around them. They still made great albums and music.
***** The Cars and Rush are the best!!!
C Lisk the cars did well. they are a band that you put on when you want to be in a good mood. tons of talent
