I saw the Cars a few years ago, minus Ric Ocasek and with Todd Rundgren on lead vocals. During "The Dangerous Type", Elliot Easton stepped forward to play the lead solo practically right in front of me . When he finished, the audience roared their approval over the music and his face lit up, smiling in appreciation of their recognition. A memorable moment.

Elliot Easton has said that he carefully crafts each guitar solo as a mini song that is designed to fit perfectly within the full composition. And when performing live he strives to exactly reproduce the same solo he performs on the recordings. He is a precise, gifted and under-rated guitarist. That is one of 5 reasons why the Cars live were so freaking delicious.

I love this channel so much. Beato does his version of music theory appreciation of famous songs from the very interesting and well informed perspective of a recording professional. Amy does well informed music theory analysis as well but from a more bachelor of arts perspective. Does anyone remember Sister Wendy and her analysis of paintings? This is very similar. Between Beato and Amy I feel like these artists I've jammed to in blissful ignorance for decades have an entirely renewed beauty. Amy seems like a gifted teacher moreso than Beato since I am utterly lost in the technical weeds with Beato often -- I guess I'd benefit from his ear training courses but I'm a lazy man -- but Amy walks us through things in a more pedagogical manner.

    • @ArturdeSousaRocha

I used to enjoy Beato's videos but these days he seems to judge the quality of the song too much by how many different chords it has and how augmented they are. She is a genuine classical musician whom I can truly see her never listening to rock before. And I love her analysis. The only other channel of reactions that I like (and have been through many I don't like) is The Charismatic Voice. Elizabeth with Charismatic Voice is an opera singer who mainly analyses the singers, but she comments quite a bit on the musicianship too. She is a young late 20's early 30's. I'm really glad you did a song like this. When you figure The Cars' debut album came out around the same time as the first Van Halen album (1978), you start to get a feel for the wide variety of music that falls under the category of rock, which was great being a teenager at the time. One song from The Cars that I really like is "All Mixed Up", which for me has really appropriate, heartfelt short guitar solos over Em and D for a song that deals with not understanding the nature of the singer's relationship with his significant other. Elliott Easton always did a fine job of designing solos that fit the nature of the song.

A good intro to New Wave, a new genre of rock that you haven't covered yet, that came out of the late 70s. It was a simpler, more lighthearted, and fun pop oriented sound that was a bit of a rebellion against what they considered overly complex progressive rock of the time. They made use of synthesizers as part of their musical expression. The Talking Heads is another popular group that fits in this genre. The Police is another, although more musically sophisticated, with Sting being their musically creative force. I really enjoyed your analysis.

Simpler songs are generally more accessible to a larger audience of listeners. Likely why most pop songs are relatively simple. Many like for Amy to dig into songs with more complexity and depth, but at the same time, if Amy wants to get an overall feel for the genres she needs to be exposed to these as well. The Cars are also far from being the most simplistic, since they do make use of things such as syncopation that very simple 3 or 4 chord songs with simplistic rhythms often don't use.

Every time it goes through a verse or chorus another layer is added over and over all the way to the end. The original structure at the beginning of this song, in rock, is often called a "groove" and the song is built around it. You will see this a lot in rock music, especially in ones with fewer chord changes. The Cure, Pink Floyd and many, many other bands do this. Layer after layer is added as the song progresses and acts as a form of musical, not volume, crescendo that adds to the mood and feeling of the song.

Produced by Roy Thomas Baker (of Bohemian Rhapsody fame) on his personal 40-track console, hence the dense layering of sounds as the song builds. The synth parts were played on one of the first miniature Casio keyboards available - the little white toys that seem cheesy today but were futuristic in 1979. Greg Hawkes was a tech geek and always had the newest stuff out of Japan. And just a note on the backup vocals - while Elliot Easton is definitely in there somewhere, the predominant voice you’re hearing is the late Benjamin Orr.

Always great to hear analyses of one of my favorite songs from The Cars, one of the elemental bands that set the stage for the synthesizer-oriented '80s "New Wave" bands (although they were also very guitar-driven).
Rik Ocasek's "interesting" voice works so well with this song and it is a nice contrast between the "cheery" E5 verse and the "hook" chorus with it's great Am, F, G, D progression, repeated in the outro with the addition of C and Em when it builds so nicely with the synth. The Cars songs in general are very well-written and produced (by Roy Thomas Baker, who worked with many seminal bands and is best known for his work with Queen--now there's a band for you to analyze).
Elliot Easton's guitar work is one of the things that makes The Cars music special--what great feel and phrasing. Re background vocals, only the drummer, David Robinson (who plays greats fills that just fit so well) doesn't sing, and Ben Orr (who along with Rik unfortunately left us too soon) sings great leads on many of their songs while providing excellent bass lines. Definitely one of the best bands of the '80s (and later '70s).

Greg Hawkes is the Synth/Keyboards player who had a massive set up. At the end of their run, he was playing bass to replace Ben Orr and the keyboards were tracks. A lot of people don't know but he originally met the band when they needed a sax player for an early song. He's a musical genious. Elliot Easton on guitar as well could play any style you asked him to and he could play right or left handed. Originally, he played right handed but switched to left handed to mirror Ben's bass on stage and give them a Beatles look! "Touch and Go" is my favorite Cars song, btw and another musical masterpiece.

The trumpet sound is a synthesizer. It was used in popular music starting in the late 1960s but there was also a classical album by Wendy/Walter Carlos called "Switched on Bach"which used only synthesizers and sold incredibly well.

This was fun to watch! I personally would choose "My Best Friend's Girl" by The Cars, with multiple guitar riffs and rhythmic changes. To Virgin Rock, metal and progressive rock will be more musically sophisticated than mainstream rock. If you are worn out by overly heavy metal songs, you may be intrigued by the power ballads of metal bands that aren't so heavy but still musically complexed. Ex November Rain by Guns N Roses, or Fade To Black by Metallica (both have many diff movements within them). You would probably thoroughly enjoy the beautiful "Silent Lucidity" by Queensryche

Context is everything here; that syncopated guitar note is basically a Bo Diddley beat. Between that and the innocent Ringo Starr backbeat, the verses take on an innocent, 50's dance party feel.

This is my absolute favorite Cars song, because my sensibilities lean toward production and this song is all about production (the building on the repetitive chorus). One thing that wasn't mentioned was that as segments were layered onto the chorus, the drums were also intensifying. This song IMHO is all about Roy Thomas Baker. It's one of his more memorable moments, alongside the obvious Queen stuff.

Always loved the minimalism of The Cars. You hear every note of every instrument. The Cars debuted when rock music was going in too many directions like punk, disco, heavy metal and euro-pop like Abba. Even Rod Stewart and The Stones were going Disco! The Cars was a breath of fresh air to rock music fans. I love how the background instrumentation gradually exchanges places with the vocals and guitars at the end, moving to the foreground with string accents and chimes as the vocals and guitars recede. LOVED your analysis.

In my opinion, you’ll get a lot more out of rock music if you allow yourself to focus on how the music feels in your *body*, as well as what it’s doing emotionally and intellectually. It’s played at a loud volume at concerts, and vigorous body movements are ubiquitous. New wave in particular is usually more dancable than other types of rock music, and metal is all about the visceral rush that fills you when those powerful, complex rhythms hit you.
