    I get alot of comments about how its a waste of money and space but music is important to me. I don't just want a collection of digital music on Spotify or Mp3s on a hard drive. I want physical versions of the music I like with the artwork and liner notes and lyrics. People that don't have a strong passion for music will never understand that but it's fine. I don't understand the things others spend their money on.

      Same. The people who don't 'get' why I drop $$$ on CD's every month are the same people who spend the same amount or more on booze, vaping, tattoos, lattes, and other nonsense.

    I have CDs that I have not listened to, that I'm saving for Winter time when I can't be outside. I am increasing my finds for the collection so fast that I can't keep up with listening. I don't care what other people think. I do what I do for what makes me happy so long as I am not interfering with somebody's else's rights. I love owning the music I love. Spotify can go "poof" tomorrow and you sure as heck can't resell your mp3 files with any degree of a viable return, if you ever need to. Further, I love having the artwork, the recorded format, and all that comes with it. It's not just throwing money down a vapid digital hole and having absolutely nothing to show for it. Keep up the great work, Brendon! :)

    I had a similar discussion with someone saying to me... "Why do you buy CDs? It's a waste of money when you can have Spotify."
    This particular person was a smoker (each to their own) and I demonstrated to them that they spend more money on cigarettes than I do on music... then I said "Now tell me who's wasting their money?"
    On a seperate note my new CDs aren't filed away until they've been listened to.... then on top of new stuff I delve into my collection all the time to listen to various stuff depending on my mood.
    At least music is a healthy obsession 😂

I will not buy any records with ring ware on the cover, split seams, writing or someone's name written on the cover, any kind of stickers or price tags stuck on the cover! I will not settle for a bad copy of an album. I don't believe in place holders until a better copy comes along.

  • @topographic1973ify
    @topographic1973ify 6 месяцев назад +1

    I get it and when I get something I always play it. Once in a while I'll have two copies and don't open one. I found the original Gun vinyl in a store unopened about ten years ago and the first thing I did was pull it open and listen to it but I did a disc recording off the pristine vinyl, I've never played the vinyl again though. I blame my collection (although it's only about half of yours) on my wife and Peter Banks. She thought I needed to have a hobby and knew my love of Yes so she decided I should should encourage me to collect that. Then I found out Peter Banks was still around and I really started by grabbing everything of his. It.s been a downhill slide ever since, I already had a lot of other stuff, but the Yes collection was like a gateway drug for me. I keep thinking I should find a way to thin it out but I can't give it up yet and the only reason I think that is because of my age and the fact I've almost died a couple of times in the last four years. Without the collection I would probably feel like dying was an option. 😄😄😄

    I bought all 1, 2, 3 and 4 of those "Lover" CD's. 😊😄 I have about 10,000 items in my music collection. I'd say about 7,000 are CD's, 2,000 are LP's, and the rest are digital albums from iTunes or wherever. I used to get that "You could open a record store" comment when I had under 4,000 music items. 😁 I agree with a lot of what you said. Young people today wouldn't understand music collecting at all. It's all on their smartphones. They'll say, "I've already got everything, on my phone". But in reality, they own nothing. And what if their favorite artist got removed from their favored streaming service? Or their favorite artist got "cancelled" for whatever reason. If that were one of my artists, I'd still have it. But I must say, I rarely listen to my Bill Cosby comedy CD's anymore. 😊

      I'm into both physical and streaming. As I clean my incoming vinyl, I make wav files on blank cds. That way, I can upload to whatever, cloud, cellphone. My micro SD card in my phone, has a big portion of my record collection. Most albums have 3 or 4 great tracks, some only have 1, some all songs are great. I make my blank cds according to that standard. I started doing this way back in 1999, when I first hooked my turntable to my computer. I now have 600 mix cds from my vinyl. I don't view them as mutually exclusive. With a little extra work, they go together. Put my phone on random, and you're gonna know I'm a record collector lol

    I buy CDs online from local record stores antique shops & thrift stores Now the ones I get from thrift stores have to be near mint & most of the are very low price as sometimes I get something that's new to my ears & if I don't like it, I can take it into my local record store ZIAS 6 locations in Arizona & 2 in Vagas they have a web site that can tell me what they have in stock on CDs LPs & tapes & other stuff So I know if it's worth getting & trading it in for trade credit that I use for something I know I will like & keep. All my music has to be played before it hits the shelf Some get played more than others before that happens. thanks for another Great show.

    I hear that all the time. When do you have the time to listen to all of it?
    I do have stuff in my collection I am not crazy about, but there is a reason I own it. It could be one or two songs that I like. It could be music that I once liked and no longer enjoy it. Or it could be one of those bands where I have their complete collection and that comes with some records that are less than stellar. But for me, for my favorite bands, even their bad albums are part of their story. And I may listen to them despite the fact that I don't like them. I could be giving them another chance. Or to just try and understand what happened or how this particular entry in their catalog doesn't work.

I am currently in the process of trying to go through and listen to all of my 10,000 "old" CDs. I started at the back (Z titles) and am currently in the S section. This has taken a couple of years. Once in a while I’ve gotten burned doing that but I guess the completist in me needs to have it just to round out the collection. Dokken’s Shadow Life is a prime example of this for me. It came out circa 1997. I raced out to Angelo’s Records in Littleton, CO immediately after work, bought it sight on scene and popped it into my car stereo and was immediately disappointed. I still have it but I haven’t listened to it in a number of years.
