My 2 standouts were Glen Danzig and Eddie Vedder. Vedder was amazing and solidified my already amazing impression of him. Glen surprised me. I met him at a meet and greet. His security was being strict about 1 item only and I had a bunch. Including Black Aria on vinyl which I learned from Glen he had no clue that even existed. But he was so cool and said he’d sign everything I had. Super nice guy.

One of the nicest people I met was Rick Allen . He was doing an Art Show in NJ and I bought a piece. I asked him who designed a particular backstage pass. He chuckled and explained that it was his lighting guy. I told him I collect art from musicians and Michael Godard. He asked what pieces I had, and I showed him pictures ( by doing that I got a minj interview about him. I got stories about him and Randy Rhoads and how he did crew work for Motorhead

I've met a handful of artists at either meet & greets or after shows, and thankfully have never really had a bad experience. But the one who stands out is Ben Folds. I've gotten to meet him 3 times, and each time he was remarkably friendly. Once was at a book signing, where you'd expect him to be nice. Another was as an extra on one of his music videos. He was extremely gracious to me and all of the other extras. And then I met him at the airport, pre-7am. I didn't want to bother him, and told him as much, but I just wanted to say how big a fan I was. Even in that early hour, he was so nice, extended his hand for a shake, and when I mentioned being an extra in one of his videos, said "Oh, I thought you looked familiar!" - I'm sure I didn't look familiar, but it was nice of him to suggest so. Really nice guy.

My band in San Diego, CA opened up for Stephen Pearcy in the mid 2000's. He took pics with me & was really cool. PS - GN'R is what I consider street rock, hard rock. There's nothing glam about them.
And finally, I've met all of Overkill & they're all really cool. Especially Dave Linsk - I hung out with him till they had to kick us out of the club at 2am. I could listen to him tell his war stories about all the bands he was in. Awesome dude!

I've met a couple, Alice Cooper - really nice guy, down to earth. Treats his fans very well. I live near Bob Seger, also a very nice guy, will stop and talk with you. Loves to talk music. But the nicest I ever met was Smokey Robinson. I was playing in a golf outing and he was playing in front of us with his friends. When the round ending, he was eating lunch in the clubhouse. About 20 of the outing folks wanting photos with him and autographs. Once he finished his lunch, he spent about 45 minutes posing for pictures with fans, signing autographs. Made sure everyone had a chance, all on his day off playing golf. Nicest celebrity I've ever met, period!

George Michael, we had a very heavy conversation with... Mick Jagger, for a few minutes, Billy Idol and Billy Morrison, Ric Ocasek, Elliott Easton, and Greg Hawks, Lemmy, who I got to talk with at The Rainbow, all of Metallica, for over six months... and many others. I really enjoy your content, and this is a great video. I spent a few years in the music business in the '80s and '90s. Worked at a record store at 15, moved to "corporate" record stores at 17, and then a buyer for a big box retailer. I've had an opportunity to meet quite a few people.
I met Stevie Nicks backstage after a show in Chicago, I am a huge fan, and some might say I have an obsession with her. Typical meet and greet but everyone left the room except me and my girlfriend, and we stood around talking to her for about 10 minutes, just the 2 of us, Stevie, and her assistant.
Had dinner with Judas Priest backstage after their show during the Painkiller Tour, I met Alice Cooper backstage (nice guy!), the Scorpions, Stanley Jordan, Janet Jackson, Bob Seger, Boz Scaggs, Poco (in 1988), Jimmy Buffett, and Jimmy Page and Robert Plant. All thanks to my job. There were a few others too. Including a band called Cold Sweat in the early 90s at a coffee shop in Denver after their gig with Dio and Love/Hate.
Positive experiences overall, got pictures with some of them, had conversations with others. Nobody was really a dick, their "handlers" were the dicks.

I never wanted or tried to meet anyone but ended up hanging out with Firehouse one day, they played in a friends back yard through a contest. The singer, CJ, talked crap about other artists who were not there and it never sat well with me and I have not listened to their music since. That kind of story is why I never wanted to ever meet someone, and it happened the one time I did. I always went out of my way to not meet bands back in the day, friends would go hang at the tour buses and such and I would just hang back just talking with non star people. lol

That's awesome about Dave Wakeling. Great band!
I haven't met anyone HUGE, but I had a great conversation with Victor DeLorenzo of Violent Femmes. My best story is when I went to this amusement park in RI to see Mojo Nixon play. He played a little and then the park was struck by lightning and lost power. He tried to do an acoustic set, but without it being mic'd up he could barely be heard. Then there was a torrential downpour. About 20 minutes later it stopped and the park reopened the rides. I got in line for the log flume and ended up in front of Mojo. We talked. He signed a soggy matchbook. Then we rode in the same log together.

An advice when you meet your heroes. Make sure you bring their latest album to sign and try to talk about the new material. Like some would let you sign a couple of albums. For example, with Sebastian Bach, be sure to bring or buy his latest solo album at a meet and greet at a record store in addition to a Skid Row record but talk more about his solo album.

Yes that's true. Lemmy's been my hero since I was 10 along with Cronos and Dee Snider, I'm now 48 and I met him in 2002. I was so gobsmacked that I asked him only the questions that first came to my mind. What's Philthy doing these days, why don't you ever play songs from Another Perfect Day? I should have at least sang the praises about the albums from 1916 through Sacrifice, since those are as good as the classic stuff or maybe even better. So, he wasn't much into those questions and the experience was not great. Didn't listen to Motörhead for a long time after that. On the positive note Graham Bonnet, Joe Lynn Turner and Barney Greenway are some of the nicest guys you could meet. I could even say that Graham was down to earth.

I met Danko Jones and the bass player JC. JC was nice and said hello and briefly spoke to me. Danko on the other hand totally rock starred me. Wouldn’t say hello, wouldn’t shake my hand and completely ignored me. I’m still a fan of the band and buy all their albums but haven’t gone to see them live ever since. My gold standard for musical heroes are Marillion, whom I"ve met each of several times. They have conventions where they just hang out with fans all the time, and I'm friends with people who are genuine friends of the band at this point. It's a great vibe.
Another person I've gotten to the point where we always talk at her shows is Jill Sobule. Again, just cool and down-to-earth.
On the flip side is Joe Jackson. I met him once at a signing and he didn't say anything. He's notoriously shy and not the kind of guy who comes out to meet fans after a show. Whereas I've met and talked to many of his band members over the years and they're all super nice.
But overall, I don't think musicians owe us anything other than what they give us on stage and on the recordings. Having them interact outside of that is gravy but not what we're paying for (unless, of course, you're actually paying for the meet and greet, which I just did with Jerry Harrison and Adrian Belew Saturday night, and they were both extremely nice).

When Bon Jovi released These Days i had won backstage passes and front row seats. I actually was more excited to meet Richie more than Jon. There was probably about 12 of us waiting. We waited for like an hour then they said the band was running late and they weren't sure if they were going to come out. The only member to finally come out was Tico, the drummer. He was the nicest guy, signed stuff, took pics and said a few words. It was just so disappointing not to meet the rest of the band. They split up the group that were wating and we got to sit on stage for 4 songs each ...they had actual bars set up on stage behind the band, with alcohol😊 . Although a cool experience was still a let down. Have met Kenny Wayne Shepherd so many times after shows outside ....he had one tour manager we got friendly with because we went to so many shows,33 , he would just bring us back stage to get our pics and stuff signed. Kenny and the guys always so kind. Met David Johansen at my local record store in the 80s. Didnt know he was going to be there and they didnt have anything left of his to buy so they were giving people album flats for him to sign. He was such jerk about it ...made negative comments to everyone about it. Like you we were just teenagers....

Sorry about you D.J. meeting, some are like that. I met Quentin Tarantino at one of his music soundtrack shows in Hollywood... and was asking if we could get a Pic 📸... he's like no that would embarrass you and me. I'm like 😮 What? 99% of the time it's all about the approach you take when meeting the bands and making an assessment of the situation. If you run up like a maniac with 20 things to get signed expect to be rejected. Being sane , level headed and undemanding is the best way. I've met everyone from Stevn Tyler, Jon Bon Jovi , Dave Mustaine, Stephen Pearcy, Robin Zander etc and they've all been cool as f***. Some I've even become friends with like the guys from Vain. Davy even took me and my friend on a nature tour of SF and we hung out at his house and studio. Got to hear Enough Rope months before it was released on his balcony!!

Met a few , some good exchanges , some not . Most were alright . Worked for a year as a runner backstage locally for a sound production team when bands came it was a co-op program for high school , later I worked at a local theater for a few years cleaning backstage and setting up the " green " room . Met folks from the likes of Alice Cooper to Natalie Cole ..., also met Meatloaf purely by accident helping a buddy out who ran a food stand at our local Aud , he just wanted some drinks and hot dogs for the crew , lol ..,

I ran into J Mascis after a show, I was 16 or 17. He wouldn't speak, only nodded 😅. I walked away thinking he wasn't nice but turns out he's very quiet and low key. My initial response was wrong. He's pretty mellow in interviews I've seen, not too chatty.

I acknowledge they’re a “Rock” band but they were “Glam Metal” in 1987 when they released Appetite For Destruction. That album is a classic representation of Glam Metal. It dirty, sleazy, hard rock at its best.

In 2006 i met Henry Rollins (Black Flag/Rollins Band) at a grocery store line up. I noticed he was buying 2 bags of "organic potato chips" I forgot he's a "straight edge" health nut, but i said "you're buying organic chips ? weird i didn't know that exist". Rollins looked at the copy of Rolling Stone magazine i was buying & said "You still read Rolling Stone ? Nobody reads that crap anymore, buy a book instead" He smerked & looked away. Our chat ended there.

Have met a lot of artists over the years. Some of the standouts were Brett Michaels, Hansi Kursch (Blind Guardian), Matt Barlow, Mark Slaughter. As Anthony says, Dave Wakeling is a super nice guy. Met Sting twice, very cordial, and polite. Jackson Browne seemed shy and a little uncomfortable, but nice enough. The one seriously negative experience I had was Paul Stanley. He was a total ass.

Guns n' roses is not glam metal. In my humble opinion I think that's what killed glam metal and people just assumed it was grunge. But there's a lot of people that just don't realize how Big guns and roses were in the late 80s early 90s and they pretty much killed every goddamn thing. And I think it was a combination of Metallica and guns and roses that was Glam metals downfall.

I've purposely never have met any of my musical heroes, although I had the chance many times. I love the music so much for so many decades that I can't take the chance of my hero being a wanker. It would ruin the music for me moving forward. That's just how my brain works. Sure, I may have missed out, I may not have any autographs and may not have any pictures or memories but it's all about preserving the music for me. Just my opinion.

Most of my instances come from sneaking back stage or waiting by the tour bus after the show. Some are meet and greets (before you had to pay for it) and others are in store signings when they were promoting albums. But all in all, you have to want to meet the bands in order for it to happen. Back in the day there were so many ways. I pursued them all and have met more than 60 of my heroes.

Dave Mustaine is a jerk no matter what. Alice Cooper Was a Saint! I loved being around him. I loved Faster Pussycats, those guys were so fun. The guys of Def Leppard were a blast to. When I meet them they always treated me with total respect. There is others. Merlyn Manson Hated to get blasted by adults but always took time with Kid fans at Ozzfest! I personally have met a few bands but only one bad experience. Gotta love the bands and show respect to them since their time is very limited. Treat them as people and you go far in conversation. I got backstage passes from the radio stations that is how I was able to meet my heros back in the day. Sorry but Dave is just rude. He doesn't like to meet people that are his fans. He is just get out of my face type of guy. RIP Steve Clark he was a great guy behind stage. I was young and he also gave me a hug. I will forever miss him.

I’ve met guys I feel like that about but if you can hold it together you get more out of the experience. My time with The Edge was 30 mins or so because I was just being a regular guy with him. If you act like the Uber fan then it’s awkward for them and they want to move on. So I’ve found just being a regular guy is the best way to act as they’re just regular guys too.

Hey Brandon, maybe next time you should buy the guitar picks or drumsticks so they can sign them. Nowadays, most musicians can no longer afford to keep buying stuff just to keep giving them away to fans.

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  2 месяца назад +11

Bro this was 30 years ago and the guitar picks and drumsticks were given to them free as promotional items because they were sponsored by the company. That said, guitar picks and drum sticks get worn out and can’t be used forever so giving them away is better than throwing them in the trash. Finally if they’re so expensive then why do musicians throw guitar picks and drum sticks out to the fans in the middle of concerts?! 🤷‍♂️ Give me a break 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️
