  • Welcome to another episode of the Sound Exchange Sessions. While I was setting up to film a different pre-planned topic, the unplanned topic of this episode presented itself and grew out of a typical record store conversation about how music should stand on its own and not use sex to sell it.

I actually like some of the pop artists today. I’m in my 40’s, so I grew up on melodic pop like Madonna and I feel like a lot of the young artists like Sabrina Carpenter are carrying on the same type of style.

Cheesy pop is strictly for making money. I don't think promoting it is any different than death metal bands having gory album covers, etc. And they all SHOULD do whatever helps them sell their products.

I’d say that poster was fairly tame when network TV will show a razor commercial with a woman shaving her pubic area. It all boils down to selling a product. Whether it’s music or razors or whatever - if you want potential buyers to notice, then you have to draw their attention.

Sex and capitalism is a lock and key.
People (generally speaking) will not separate them. People have been deeply conditioned to expect this coupling.
At this stage in life, it bothers me. I solely want the music. Sex as a marketing strategy only worked for me from ages 14-27.
If the music doesn't move me, I have no time for it. Did I get rid of all my highly sexualixed albums from the 70s- late 80s? Nope....not if I still could relate to the music.

I listen to quite a few artists, and just love it to let their music speak for itself, especially with these modern all female bands, like in the UK, we have The Big Moon and The Last Dinner Party, who are rock groups, but they like to do more casual music, instead of having more explicit content, whether it’s dirty or violent, or whatever, and you have The Beaches, The Warning and other female rock bands from all over the world, that have lyrics of those things, and sometimes it can be quite gratuitous, and sometimes unnatural in places, but I think it’s more common in America than in the UK, for these artists to act sexual, but not explicitly as most people say.
However I rather just let all music speak for itself.

Hi Brendon, I’m fairly new to your content and I’m loving going through all your previous videos. Would you be able to help me in my CD collection that I’ve started only recently?
I’m looking to add new albums to my list and I’m so confused as to which ones to obtain. Some masters I’ve heard can sound real muddy and it’s so difficult finding information on good masters of a recording in CD online.
I’m looking at Dokken original CDs on eBay and I’m confused by the various countries of manufacturing and the forums that say one is better than the other. They are selling Japan, USA and West Germany CDs of the same album and I have no idea which ones to buy as there are contradictory reports about the best sounding one online.
I recently bought a Journey CD original and it sounded awful. I usually avoid remasters due to the compression and loudness which I find loses dynamics and balance to allow the sound to breathe.
I also remember getting the Megadeth remasters back in like 2006 and they sounded so bad as I barely recognised the sound. I’m very nostalgic about music I grew up with which is then being drastically altered.
Please let me know from your experience in general which country of manufacturing of 80s CDs sounds best to you and if you notice any difference whatsoever in the quality.
Please could you make a video going in depth on this topic? Thank you so much for sharing your passion through RUclips!

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  5 дней назад

Different counties usually do not have different mastering. Sometimes an album is recorded for one market and later another county decides to release it and they do a remix. This happened with Dokken’s Dysfunctional album. It was originally released in Japan with a different mix, track listening and songs. Later the US decided to release it and they wanted to change it. I prefer the Japanese version that was a self titled album but both are worth having. I have made a video comparing both versions. As for the other Dokken albums I recommend the Rock Candy Records reissues that sound way better than the original masters released in the 80’s. Regarding the Megadeth albums you bought in 2006 those weren’t just remastered and remixed they had parts removed and changed. That’s why they sounded so different. And for Journey definitely get the remasters, they sound brilliant. For the most part remasters will always sound better. But in some small instances it can be the other way around.

The cover of the debut album of Montrose has all 4 guys topless as well. Jon Bon Jovi has always worn shirts to enhance his hairy chest for the ladies. Were it not for a pink border to match the nail polish of the model, Slippery When Wet would have had an entirely different cover and may have turned off women from buying the album.

  • @richardhenle2650

I will have to say Sabrina is very tame for these times. I mean you see Meg the Stallion and Nicki Minaj and artists more in that genre shaking it on stage on shows like the grammies, their videos I mean I have watched some and can't believe back in the day people wanted to ban Sheena Eastion and Laura Branigan, I mean its not that long ago. But that is the world we are in now, as PRINCE said in the early 2000's sexiness is in the mind, this coming from someone who used sex alot in his early music. I mean look at HEART sex saved their career, because they were done, despite doing a great record with "Passionworks" no one cared till they became glamour girls and Nancy showed cleavage, yes the songs were great but they didnt write them, they sold out as the sisters have said over and over. With Sabrina Carpenter she isn't selling out, she isn't being sexy to be popular she was already a big star in music, right in there with the pop ladies like Rodrigo and Swift. I think this album and things she is doing are a concept, she hasn't done "sexier" songs like this before, she also has a perfume or some endorsement that a lot of her look now is tied into, I see it is a natural progression and a concept, I mean Madonna did it, and had she not she never would have been what she was. But I mean you can kind of tell when an artist is doing it for shock or get clicks and notice. I mean I love the Pretty Reckless and at times I want Taylor to tone it down because it becomes the focus of people looking at her and the band is super tight and she has one of the best female rock voices, and some great songs, but at times the "shock" shots overshadow the band and it only does when its a female. Now if a band like "Dorothy" fronted by Dorothy Martin all of a sudden she started doing sexy shoots and stripping down her look I would say she is selling out because she has never been about that, ever, also I think her age has a bit to do with it and beliefs in certain things. So I think the Sabrina album is getting really good reviews and honestly all her records have, she is a good singer, writer and this is just a different type of record, as for Taylor swift she has never presented herself this way, Sabrina has that about her, not saying one looks better than the other, but Sabrina has a more natural sexuality that has come out alot before, where as Taylor she is not there for that and yes on stage you will see Taylor walking around showing a lot of legs but its a different ride, the music is different too. As for parents complaining whatever, if the kids have a phone then they are getting much worse stuff than Sabrina, I mean some complained about Oliva Rodrigo cursing on her latest album, well why does she have to explain that? She is 22 now yes most of her base is younger than her but get the edited album, I mean I hear a lot of cursing in a lot of music and Rodrigo is very tame. As for the poster I mean Kacey Musgrave's latest album is fantastic possibly an album of the year candidate and she did various covers and one is her in a field of grass in a fetal position naked, and of course that version sold out first, but that didnt make the record great, she as a musician did.

If the music truly 'spoke for itself', there wouldn't be cover art at all. All of those box sets with stickers, patches, and posters wouldn't exist either. People like packaging, that's not news.
Women get put in impossible positions. Sabrina puts a sexy picture of herself in, and you criticize her, yet you're defending all the old rock bands who went much further with their album art. Why couldn't they let the music speak for itself?
Or, this is veering awfully close to saying women have to choose between being serious or sexual, because men can't see women as anything but sex objects.
