    I remember the fresh opened smell of the cassette liner notes in the 80s. Glad I'm not the only one who notices the smells. I like having physical copies because being able to look at the liner notes... and combined with the music... instantly takes me back to that time when the songs on that release came out and that stimulates my mind to remember things that happened in my life when that cd/album came out.

    Great video guys, I have been collecting for over 50 years and I have more music than I'll ever need but I can't stop. Everyday for me is record store day and if I can't find anything that I really want I never leave without buying something as I feel I am helping to keep the store and the store owner survive in today's marketplace and to thank them for providing me with such a cool place to shop. I also love the smell of records.

    Great topic , we all feel this. I find myself resisting the urge more . Occasionally driving by the record store. I can always go back but i also try to remind myself that i have a great collection, go home and listen to it . Finding that balance is tricky cause we love it so much 💿🎶

    I'm a newbie to collecting music (CDs). I think it comes down to the purpose of why you're collecting. I live in a rural America, where radio, TV and cellphone transmission is very limited to non-existent. Also people are few too. But I like my Rock and Roll, which had a great impact on me, and still does. Yes, lyrics still matter. For me I decided to acquire a private library of music that I can turn to, to listen to music without commercial or other bullshit interference. I also want enough variety so that I don't play an album or song to death either.
    I have around 2,500 CDs of music from bands I like. Anthony from Sound Exchange is included. I like it when I've got a desire to hear this song, album or just want to hear a particular band and be able to sit in my recliner with head phones on and turn out the world for x minutes for whatever reason.
    I always thought that studio albums gave me the best example of hearing the words, music, and the technicalities of how the end product was achieved. But that's not necessarily true. Sometimes live performances are better. Sometimes seeing the songs played on through a DVD is better. So now the perfect production for a mix or remaster to get to the understanding of how that song is played or sung is a new quest for me. I am not looking for the 100th version, but the best version that gets me to my goal.
    I am still far from having gotten everything I want, but when I'm close, my purpose must change to finding new music that I enjoy or that has lyrics that actually say something. My issuer is that being so far away from ANY city, there aren't any record stores, so online shopping is my mainstay for getting music.
    Brendon's channel has given me access to other record stores, besides Ebay, Amazon, Wal Mart and Discogs to acquire what it is I'm looking for. I am also buying direct from record companies and the band itself too. I check them all out to get the best price on what I'm looking for.
    Also now for me is the quality of the CD. Do I buy it new or can I get a near mint CD that will suffice, How much do I intend on playing the CD. Is it a one shot listen so a "very good" CD will work or do I need better quality than that. Sometimes, it just comes down to the deal that I can make, thinking that at some point I know I'll have to replace it, when a new opportunity arises to do that.
    Throw in the uncertain times and economic turbulence this country is going through adds urgency to the mix. But in the end, just enjoying the music for what it is matters the most and having that at my whim is the most important reason.

    I believe that record/music collecting is in your blood, and for me, it started at an early age. Mostly with 45's in the 70's as a teenager, then to LP's and 8-tracks, and cassettes after that. I also became a fan of VHS recording off of MTV shows,and other telecasts. I put a lot of my LP's onto cassettes in that era. I held off on CD's until the late 80's, and then finally broke down and bought my first, the Psychedelic Furs debut. Then all hell broke loose in the 90's, with Columbia House and BMG, scoring hundreds of CD's, and then also DVD's and movies.
    Point is, I suppose music collectors are fulfilling some sort of a buyer's "addiction", rather than wasting money on drugs, alcohol, etc.. Someone once told me that at least you have something to show for the money spent, which I'm sure you guys believe that you have achieved one heck of a diverse, satisfying collection for all of your efforts. And if you can display and share it with others, all the better. Cheers, guys! Great video!

    Great discussion lads.
    I collect CDs as they are easier to store, more robust and of course portable (I own LPs but rarely now buy them, especially at todays prices as you have highlighted)
    I'm not a fan of streaming, mainly because I like to own something tangible, but also because buying hardware media supports the artist better... streaming services just rip them off.
    I do not, like yourselves though, buy all the different versions of the same album. I generally just keep the one, best version (IMO), copy as I only own what I will actually play & listen too. Just my thing...
    Discussions could go on and on... 😊

    First of all, the rising prices of CDs and vinyl are ridiculous. Second of all, my family does not understand why I collect CDs, instead of just stream my music on Spotify. They don't understand the feeling of listening to a physical CD front to back, without any commercials, and the songs play in the exact order of the album.

    It's shitty not to find what you wanted until you might discover something you never knew was out there. I think it's in listening to your show, and then you hear a band or something like a hidden treasure... It's like when I stumbled on New England, Anouk, Hooverphonic, 8 stops 7, Amyl and the Sniffers or The Go Betweens. The discovery fills my heart with so much joy. But I completely understand those whom try to get everything made by a band. Keep the love alive you guys. I also have gotten back to some cds. I love vinyl, when it's done right.

I collect too many things to over keep in any one area. I do have a hard time with my Stephen King books because a paperback is easier to hold and carry but the hardcovers look so nice! Got a question for Anthony. Is SoCal-based Gen Z indie pop-rock band Echosmith (a female-fronted family band of siblings best known for the Top 40 radio hits "Cool Kids," "Come Together," "Bright," "Lonely Generation" and "Diamonds") a big seller over at Sound Exchange? Last month (or maybe it was in Rocktober) marked the 10th anniversary of their eponymous debut album Talking Dreams, a solid rookie effort, imo. A few months prior to that, they released a S/T album of brand spanking material (on an independent label - after being signed to the Warner label for several years) that sort of flew under the radar during the summer of 2023. I think both albums were Black Friday/Record Day only releases.

    So at some point there needs to be consortium of Record stores (not just a few but a lot), that sign a letter and get it distributed to all the record companies. You need to show them the evidence that folks are having to choose to only buy 1 record.

    I worked in a music store for six years. I totally relate to the record companies charging too much. This was not vinyl times...cds were big then....always be my method of collecting. Even then the prices were rising...they made virtually nothing on new releases....you had to price accordingly to what was around the area with the hope that people would pick up something other than new releases. I would love it if we had a Sound Exhange here...we have a Newbury Comics with virtually no choices....forced to go online.

    You guys are right on!! Perfect example being a Kate Bush fan from the 80’s it’s great seeing her resurgence however they just re-release all of her albums on colored vinyl same re-mastering from 2018, nothing new but the colored vinyl n her new label logo, and the albums cost $40 and up plus they are only in the indie stores n they are sold out because they didn’t issue enough to the stores. Puts a very bad taste in my mouth as a collector. It’s not just Kate Bush other artist have done this as well. They are going to kill the golden goose again in the music industry.

      CD cost you see in store is $14.99. The average breakdown in profit.
      $4.99 retail music store
      $1.25 per cd for band
      $9.75 per cd for record company
      The label isn't greedy they pay ALL the costs of manufacturing, distributing, packaging, promotion (music videos/ advertising in magazines & online) and they are allowed to make some profit ($3 per disc) or why bother starting a business ?

    I’ve started to buy physical copies of music again over the last few years. I can’t buy alternate versions of different albums. I used to be a big comic book collector and I got multiple alternate covers of different comics. Spent so much money. I can’t do that anymore. I’d much rather be selective and get certain things that I want and stream the rest.

Same with watches too. The sneakers thing was always a hard one to me to fully get into, i like certain models or brands. But how do you talk beyond how they feel, look and how there constructed?

    @richardhenle2650 9 месяцев назад

    Yeah, I agree on so many things here and feel the same way. ONE thing first off that annoys me are any store taking advantage of the surge in physical media again. I get it, they got to make some $$ to make up for so much lost during the time being closed down in 2020, but at the same time here in NYC, you recall "Book Off" they just totally have become nonsense to me and this was a place I would buy 10-15 a week a couple of music DVDs etc... but they totally went the other way, mainly because they are not a music store by any means, they sell way more than just music but I now and then go in there for a good laugh at a used record that looks like it was in a flood selling for $30 because that spot in the city is "touristy" and maybe you get it sold. The second thing is the "Flippers" with RSD I mean there is no real way to combat this thing, but it bothers me when I see someone paying $300 on eBay for a Taylor Swift or Olivia Rodrigo record with a few songs on it to someone who cares nothing about them, just wants to rip off someone who really is a fan, but that's the downside with RSD since the beginning. I'd be curious to hear Anthony's take on the flipping and spotting a flipper on RSD. Next thing is something you both touched on is the labels jacking up the prices to the stores, when I worked in a music store it was the greatest thing but if I didn't get the discount, I did for working there, I probably wouldn't have been able to buy 3/4 of what I did. People don't realize that those music stores back in the day, like Tower Records, Sam goody, weren't trying to rip you off charging 15-18 dollars, the labels were jacking up CDs all the time, the reason a Best Buy or a Walmart could sell a disc for 8-9 dollars was they didn't care what they lost on that because they had other merchandise that they specialize in to make up the margin, Best Buy always was losing money back in the day with their 9 dollar CDs. But the places like Tower didn't sell TVs and washing machines like Best Buy did, Tower was a music store, Best Buy never was, people never understood that. And now it's happening with Vinyl, which is why I try to only get vinyl from a few small indie places here in the city, there's not much they can do with pricing, however. And I do agree on the "not buying anything feeling." Happens to me all the time when I am going to a few of the places still in the city here, like Record Runner or Village Revival Records, Rock N Soul etc... As for the streaming thing, I do have an account with Apple just because I can't be digitizing vinyl to apple music, I do it rarely when it's something I can't get streaming, but I always try to get physical of artists mostly because if it's just streaming I forget I even have it, case in point the Joan Jett that just came out RSD.

    I Stream for a couple of reasons; I can't afford to buy CDs, I'm on a limited income. I live in a very small one bedroom apartment. So even i could buy CDs, I wouldn't have the space for it. When I was a kid I had a huge CD collection but at the time I didn't need to buy food or pay rent because I was living with my parents. So it was easier for me to buy CDS. Now since Streaming came along. I can have a huge collection that is way cheaper and I don't have to worry about it taking up space.

      NOT all of today's music is crap, especially the rock side of it. Sometimes you've got to be kept open minded instead of instantly turning up your nose to it. And I am only quoting what Eddie Money said to the program director of my local classic rock radio station the year before he passed away. Eddie made some excellent points.

    Brendon,just an idea Have you ever thought about having other record store owners you’ve visited and met on your show for their takes on the state of vinyl and cd collecting. Sound Exchange gets a good plug from your show. I’m thinking spread it around. Just a thought.

      Yes I’ve filmed a video called Record Store Round Table that had 3 different record store people on it where I interviewed them all. That said, yesterday I filmed an episode with Anthony but also had the store owner of Vinyl Addiction join. I have inquired at other stores but most don’t want to be on camera. Just happens Anthony is a natural.

    I don’t understand the people who don’t seek out music. They are happy with the hits from the radio. Even if they like an artist they don’t deep dive them.

    Great video, I like the honesty of it : yeah, music collecting is an addiction, I feel the same way you do when I don't find anything, and I don't want to go home with nothing, and I don't want to buy something online because I want it now... But, in that case, is it really music we are looking for ?... Do we need to listen to music on cd... or to BUY a cd ?...
    But I have no space left... What do I do ?? :-D
    I love the Donnas so much ! Waiting for their later albums to be reissued.

    Perhaps producing vinyl records just isn’t a commercially viable enterprise in this digital streaming era. It’s a narrow niche market, the demand just isn’t there for mass production (and therefore cheaper costs). Back in the 60s 70s 80s the masses had no option but to buy vinyl if they wanted the music, today it’s freely available at the touch button. The industry needs the masses buying lots of crap music on vinyl to enable production costs to reduce across the board, but people just stream

    at what point does a " Collection" become a symptom of " Hoarding ??????? & WHY ???

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  9 месяцев назад +1

      It’s not hoarding because the collection as a whole is made up of different albums, not just one. If the collection was lots and lots of one album then you’d be hoarding. You can’t hoard just one of something. Also the disorder associated with hoarding is a condition that involves ongoing difficulty parting with possessions, leading to severe clutter and a risk to safety. Music collectors like myself and Anthony are highly organized without clutter and risk to safety.

    Man, you guys are going to have to start contacting the record labels and the bands and tell them to release more stuff. Just tell them that you ran out of stuff to buy, and you need some more.

    I know Anthony has reissues from Cherry Red family of labels. Does he ever get a cd-r?

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  9 месяцев назад

      Yes some of the CDs in the store are the new “on demand” versions which are basically burned CDs and I hate them. Unfortunately it’s what some of the labels are doing and it’s too bad because I know there are lots of people like me that won’t buy them. I just send them back if I get one and then order a used copy in order to get a real one.

    • @DorianPaige00

      @@BrendonSnyder Concord, Candid, and Acrobat did this as well. Those labels have backed off after collector backlash but I notice this happens when "new represses" suddenly appear. I can always tell with the cellophane not having four tight corners. Are there any other ways you can tell? How does Anthony weed it out because essential he paid $12 or something most collectors would not value at $6? If he sells them online, he'll get pushback and probably already does.
