  • Looking for a Milorganite alternative? Milorganite has been a great lawn fertilizer for many people but between shortages or lawns which don't really need any more phosphorus, I've been looking for another organic lawn fertilizer to use as a replacement. Today we go over Purely Organic Lawn Food and complete an application on a portion of my lawn.
    See update after I applied this fertilizer - • Backyard After Organic...

    I have used a drop spreader for the past 11 years. I love it! I tend to use less fert, and know exactly how much and where the fert falls. The broadcast spreaders are far faster, but I feel like I can't control it nearly as easy as with the drop spreader.

    Last year I tried Milorganite, left four (4) bags in my vehicle in the blazing heat for several days and my ride smelled awful for weeks. This year, I am going with a synthetic fertilizer based upon info from my soil test and correcting the PH. Also introducing some NEXT products and other forms of trace minerals and amino acid.. So far, the grass looks better than any yard I have ever had and dominates most of the town (lol).

    You might add slopes into your consideration, if you have a significant rainfall before the fertilizer is fully absorbed into the soil, it will wash down hill. So, I put it on heavier at the top and less at the bottom and spread it across the slope rather than up and down.
    I live just outside of farm country and all of the little communities have to dispose of their sludge from their sewerage plants, in this area most of it is spread over farms that aren't growing food products intended for human consumption, since most are growing feed corn, hay, or soybeans that doesn't apply to them. This is a win/win since the sewer authority doesn't have to dry their sludge (so they could burn it) and the farmer gets free fertilizer and they even apply it for him. It does smell though. Back in the day when George Washington was President (NYC was the Capital) the city employed an army of men to clean up after the thousands of horses in the city, there was a fleet of small ships (sail of course) that carried the manuer to farm communities along the shore. farmers would apply about ten wagonloads of maneur per acre each year. Big cities like NY and Philadelphia used to dump their sludge at sea, about 100 miles offshore, this is now against US law and international law.

  • @mikefarry8494
    @mikefarry8494 5 лет назад

    1- What is your schedule for fertilizing the lawn with these two products, Milorganite and Purely Organic? I live in Atlanta, GA. Might be a little different down here. Do you use any synthetics throughout the year ... on your front lawn, perhaps?
    2- Also, is it ok to treat lawn for weeds at the same time that you use a fertilizer, something like Image for Nutsedge, or something similar, to treat Nutsedge, crabgrass, and other broadleaf weeds? I put down Bermuda seed in very specific tracts where lawn was dug up. Grass germinated about a week ago. I will be careful not to spray new grass with weed killer.

    Great video Ryan. I've been debating between this product and Jobes organic lawn food. They seem very similar except the Jobes only comes in 15 lbs bag but supposedly covers 5000 sqf as well. Jobes says it comes with Biozome. Do you know much about that?

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  5 лет назад

      The jobes is just a lower rate of nitrogren applied if you make it cover 5k sq ft with only 15 pounds of product. It would be a rate of .3 pounds of nitrogen with those numbers. The biozome is beneficial bacteria added in to the product.

  • @jpiccari

    It sounds like it's very similar to ringer lawn restore. Both are plant based with soy bean meal added. They share similar color and sounds like they smell very similar. The only difference is you might get a bit more K from ringer.
    I may have to try that stuff as a replacement for ringer (milorganite is illegal here because of the phosphate).

      If you're looking to get rid of the weeds just remember that fertilizing the grass can help it get more healthy but it's also going to be fertilizing the weeds so if they're really heavy, one or two sprays of the weeds might be what you need to let the grass take over again.

    2:29 I ran a knife along the top of the box and made a small slit in the bag 🙁. Had to patch with duct tape. Didn't know it was that close to the top.

    I finally found some Milo. If you need some, check Ace Hardware. Found some for $11.99 a bag. I'll have to try this out someday

    Just threw some of this down on a test plot in the front and on the entire backyard. The setting is good at 9 on the Scotts broadcast for approx 5k.. Confusing with the 7.5 and 11.5. I think this was like $14 at HD.

      I don't know if this is what caused some weird results in my backyard and some spots in my front, but I'm wondering if anyone else experienced some different grass types, weeds, get into your yard that this may have caused. Weird! Anyone?

    @ryanknorr It's expensive to get online, but check if you can find MicroLife fertilizers in your area, maybe order it thru Ace hardware, I know my local Ace carries it. The recommended rates are high, but if you dial it down for the N that you want, it'll work, also it's a true OMRI organic fertilizer and has been around for 34 years. I just started using it this year on my front lawn dang it hasn't ever looked this good. Looks better than my back lawn with full the N-Ext liquid program.

    Is this product actually organic certified? I did not see an OMRI logo or any other organic certified labeling.

  • @lambert1702

    Ryan that product is basically just soybean meal which you can buy at any feed store -- $20 for a 50lbs bag. Generic soybean meal can be put out with a broadcast spreader, btw. Also soybean meal doesn't smell fantastic at all when it starts to break down; it smells like rotting garbage.

      This also contains distillers grains just like Ringer and smells awesome. Like hops from a brewery. I’ve never noticed a foul smell.

    • @lambert1702
      @lambert1702 5 лет назад +2

      @@streetstylz Ringer also contains MOP. I've used Ringer and straight soybean meal and gotten the same results with both -- including the smell.

      I've gotten better color from soybean meal than Milo, so I think it definitely works.

    I love Sustain 8-2-4 as a general purpose fertilizer. I know you don’t need the phosphorus, but I would also recommend it as a miloganite alternative.

  • @platodimitriadis7808

    i've used Milorganite only and neglected the K on the grass for a long period. How do I get K on the grass cheaply I went to a store and it was expensive and need a granular product. I have a scotts classic drop spreader that I calibrated and it still overapplied the Milo. But no worries with the Milo. Milo is still available in the smaller hardware stores here but 14.98 a bag. Bought 2 checkmate striping kits (honda hrx and husqvarna tractor) and will be striping soon. Love to say I am dominating but others think I'm just crazy with the grass. I just think there crazy because they can't dominate!

      Plato Dimitriadis you should be rotating you milo with another Fert. 1 month milo, next month a 10-10-10 or 10-0-10 if you don’t need phosphorus.

      To boost K, I'm using Lesco Pro Turf, 24-0-11, 3% iron. Waiting to put down organics when the ground temps get closer to 70s.
