I am one of the hidden homeless living in temporary housing after a no fault aviation, been in low support temporary housing for two years, I have been told by the council it’s a two-three year wait,I don’t do drugs nor alcohol, my way of coping is ‘just keep showing up for yourself, keep bidding every week, attending therapy every week and keep checking with my mental health as that plays a massive impact on your mental wellbeing, it’s all I can do, it puts a lot in perspective and also been neurodivergent as well is hard with anxiety, I get everyone takes different paths, we all cope and progress what is and has happened

@blackcorp0001: "I learnt the hard way... can't force them." Very true. The secret to really helping people in need of help is knowing when they are ready to accept it.
Also, just because you don't see instant action on your advice doesn't mean your message went unheeded.
I'm a Medicine Man. Over the years I have heard many stories from folks who claimed the start of their journey of healing from something someone told them long ago.
What I learned from this is knowing when to act on a "gut feeling" to offer help without pushing it onto them.
I've also learned the wisdom of not acting without the "gut feeling".

Kirsty is an angel, a rare person who found the strength to better not only herself but has the strength to try n be there for others. May Luke also succeed. It’s extremely difficult to stay clean in a building full of folks in the same cycle so really what can folks expect? So many amongst us think these guys are lost causes but in all reality we are all so lucky not to have suffered the trauma these guys have endured. Such a sad situation.

People also have unrealistic expectations of their standards of living. So many people in videos like this want to rent a whole house, have multiple children etc. Whilst the rest of us working professionals live in house-shares and wait until we can afford children to have them.

Being homeless takes people away from support. No family watching out for you,😅 no friends who care, no family doctor who knows you. No wonder that young men like Luke don't have the ability to find a home, a job a reason to live beyond the numbing effects of drugs that they find on the streets. As a mother of boys I know it's not easy. What is clear is that until Luke has help to tackle his mental health issues, his need for family and belonging, his maladaptive coping mechanisms, ie drugs, he is going to continue to struggle. It goes beyond homelessness. It's the breakdown of family and society.

Have you discussed with the charity shelter, or the local council, or citizens advice. They all offer different expertise and will help you access what your best option is.
Another option is discussing with the landlord if they are going to sell with a tenant?
Even if it’s a 1 bed flat (which hopefully you can afford, if you can’t you will be under the threshold for welfare and need to make sure you are claiming everything you can) then it’s better then being homeless.

Especially in the USA not all homeless are those who have CHOSEN to give up on life. I knew a very resourceful young lady that lived in her van for two years on the coast, and had two young children. She managed her life, didn't cut the guy out (he had his own challenges but took them on weekends) and eventually got subsidized housing. That had it's own challenges as others in basically govt. housing care didn't see her resourcefulness as a good fit: she didn't drink, blow dope, or blame govt and everyone else for her challenges.

We have rough sleepers residing in our garbage store, a small, airless, lightless room filled with stinking skips. They drag their bedding in late at night. It's hell for them as well as being hell for us, the apartment block dwellers living above them (62 couples and families). They make noise, deal drugs, drink cheap alcohol. Our landlords refuse to become involved, telling us to contact the local council's homeless department. It is useless, because it can only offer night shelter accommodation with strict rules and the homeless don't want to be treated like children. Police will not attend, regardless of what's going on. I am waiting for the day when I open the door to throw away garbage and find a dead body. This! This in a country which has the 6th richest economy and cares for its people not one jot. Shame on you, UK, and eternal damnation and shame on our politicians, central and local who turn the other way and allow this to continue and worsen.

Thank you for this intelligent programme about a really serious problem . I adopted a child in 1986. His teenage mum did not realise she was pregnant for 4 months. She drank quite heavily. Our son has fetal alcohol effect. We tried our best and have always loved him unconditionally. He has been homeless for most of his life. His father and step mother offered him a lovely apartment in their home. It was too far away from his drug friends so he left. Every time we thought he would be okay he slipped back into his old life. I am unable to help him financially as I am a senior on a small pension. He is now living with a friend but he does not have his own phone. He texts me from different numbers and I never know where he is or what he is doing. Every time he is given a phone he either loses it or sells it. His father and I love him so much and it breaks our hearts to see him in this situation. He refuses to go to a rehab program, which his father has offered to pay for. All we can do is love him and offer him what help we can. It is his decision to accept the help or not.

Also as far as I know next to a new (luxury) buildings they must build social housing as well. In my country never dreamed to have something like that from gov. I lived one of the “luxury” building and those who lived next to us had some serious issues. Often was garbage on the street from them, drug dealers etc. Police needed to be involved manny times as well. Sadly giving resources not always solved their problem, people need purpose in their lives, a job some responsibilities and dignity. I think these project are fair to give families with kids.

@clinthufkie3242 Sorry I dont think I explained myself very well.
The armchair crew i was referring to are the folks who often have the opinion that addiction is a choice and the fault of the idiot who got themselves addicted . They ar3 also often heard to say the homeless like that life and choose to remain there.
Having worked in night shelters outreach yp services and all sorts of hostels as well as mental health for the nhs ( and been homeless twice now ) I wish the folks who make those comments could spend one night doing outreach or perhaps experience how scary it is on your first night in a shelter.
Anyone who empathises for one second , makes a donation, drops a coin in a tin or chats to someone on the street for 30 secs ....of course I have no problem with them , we need more of that
