The documentary “One Day” features 14 unique perspectives on the crisis. Our journalists met people living in tents and RVs, rode along with firefighters, went to outreach events, spent hours in a busy emergency room and more. At 16 I was homeless in Portland. Worked full time, was clean, never littered. Had savings but couldn’t rent because I was a minor. It was so so hard to go to work everyday when my mind was 100% on figuring out where to sleep, somewhere safe. By the time I’d fall asleep there’d be cops or someone making me move. I remember sleeping under tarp one night after all my stuff was stolen when I was at work, 2 hours of sleep with 2 hours left and I wake up to a joggers dog peeing on my head. She laughed and told me to get a job. Washed my hair in my work sink and started work. My job was in a toy store, I’d throw birthday parties for kids. It’s easy to give up when going forward looks impossible. Be nice to everyone. The homeless are people too.
Can I ask why you weren’t in a foster care setting. You could have saved up money for when you turned 18?? 16 is just a kid😭😭😭😭😭
Dealing with karens when the clerks are in the same situation angers me.
What the hell happened to our country?
Under 18 you are guaranteed fostercare. You can walk into any fire fighter station, police station or hospital and they would be required to let you stay until fostercare agent assists you

People shooting at her and her daughter in their RV is absolutely the lowest of humanity.
It's ridiculous, she honestly seems like she's doing what she can to keep her and her daughter safe and sheltered.
China has alphabet agents in our country harassing our Chinese American citizens, hoping to control their political voice as well as force the skilled and wealthy ones back to China.
Keep an eye out for your local patriotic Chinese Americans, China is deliberately attacking those people.

Someone working a fulltime job and still not being able to afford an apartment is a real indictment of our Society.
This will only increase. It's not only the wealth inequalities and privilege --WORK IS ENDING. There will be some menial labor and there will be a little skilled work but more and more machines are doing the work, and people are less necessary. Ancient societies had the dole. They realized that if they didn't feed people, they would revolt. Society has to provide a minimum standard of living or collapse.

In my opinion, a housing market crash is imminent due to the high number of individuals who purchased homes above the asking price despite the low interest rates. These buyers find themselves in precarious situations as housing prices decline, leaving them without any equity. If they become unable to afford their homes, foreclosure becomes a likely outcome. Even attempting to sell would not yield any profits. This scenario is expected to impact a significant number of people, particularly in light of the anticipated surge in layoffs and the rapid increase in the cost of living.

I was homeless in Portland for almost 3 years.. I have a history of drug addiction but managed to stay away from drugs while I was homeless. I worked two full time jobs and saved money. I met my now wife, we both worked together our asses off and made a series of strategic decisions to save our lives. We bought a car and started sleeping in that. We had one dog at that point which made it harder to find housing. We eventually found a room to rent in a beautiful house in a nice part of Portland. We got on a list for housing over a year before we found a place to live... just got a call from Portland about a week ago saying our number was pulled and could get housing! This is over 5 years after leaving Portland. My wife and I now own a horse, both have careers which we love, we have a beautiful place to live in a beautiful state (Ak). We kept a lot of the habits we learned from being homeless, like going daily to a gym ( not for showers anymore ), working out became an outlet for our struggles and we became totally jacked. We eat healthy fresh planned meals. We are what people probably call a power couple, because we had to learn to adapt to grow and learn and get strong to survive or die in the gutter. I thank God and my freedom for my ability to pursue liberty and work hard to better myself and my family's lives! People who were handed everything in life do not appreciate that!! I hope whatever you are going through now, you will find the strength the perseverance of will to conquer and pursue your dreams!!! God bless you all! Thank you for reading my long comment.

I have interacted with Daria @ Rite Aid for a while now. She ALWAYS has a big smile and is Incredibly friendly. I for real shop at this store above other pharmacies in my area because of the staff which is epitomized by Daria's friendly nature. In brief conversation when she told me she was homeless it was hard to wrap my head around. EVERY day EVERY interaction I've had she is GREAT. Even when being verbally abused by rough customers she just turns her cheek and snaps back into her outgoing vibrant personality.
She would be a valuable asset for virtually any company or community lucky enough to have her.
I believe you, she really did make a positive impression, Prayers and blessings for you and Daria.
Hopefully someone reading this can rent her a room.
And yet you have not invited her to stay in your home. Why? Just asking. Are you homeless too?

FYI- she is EXACTLY the type of person who needs but a minor bump to get over the hump. If it were in anyway feasible I would've GLADLY offered her "longterm" assistance (time for her to work her way up waiting lists for low income housing subsidies and/or either directly or via referral: a link to a living wage job) rather than a 'weekend's' stay. Unfortunately, that's not in my means right now.
Since you were raised right & have had the means to not only work but to save $ while progressing upwards throughout life: it'd be great if you could share how (besides trolling online) you give back so others might learn from your actions.

I've always been lower middle class , I make between 19 and 25,000 dollars a year but I've ALWAYS had a job and a roof over my head . Yes I feel blessed.

I lived in my truck after my divorce. The hardest thing was keeping presentable for my job. I kept it a secret and no one ever knew I remember finding a water hose to hang from a tree to shower.

UPDATE: The mother and her 5-year-old daughter featured in One Day have found housing. They just moved into a family shelter in Southeast Portland. After appearing in the documentary, Tianna McMullen said she heard from concerned family and friends - including a former employer. The Best Western Rivershore Hotel in Oregon City rehired her to help do laundry.
“They saw me on the ‘One Day’ thing and were like, ‘Do you need a job?’ explained McMullen. “I loved working there. It was my home away from home.” She's now working hard to get her own apartment with her daughter.

I was homeless for 2 1/2 years, living in my car. Had several scary wake ups, the worst being someone crashing into my car at 2:30 AM while I was sleeping in it, destroying it and sending me to the hospital. I hope all these people get housed permanently.

Portland is about 72 percent white. “ interesting . And a crisis.
My brother (a man in his 50s) became homeless in California for couple of weeks. I live several states away. He was a good person. We were raised by loving, hard working parents on a big farm. We had everything we ever needed. Popular, good looking, ultra talented and smart. He went to a major university on a scholarship. I didn't. He had a great job that paid more money than my job paid me. Traveled all over the world. Had bought a brand new and very beautiful apartment. However, after time, He chose to use alcohol and prescription drugs and began to loose it all in a slow and sad way. Our family helped him get into several rehab facilities over few years. Ultimately, he lost his job, was living in his car. I would order pizza and have it delivered to hotel rooms we were paying for him to live in. He passed away all alone in a hospital room a year ago. I miss him everyday. Addiction is real, Addiction kills.

Even prescription drugs can be hazardous & some people think cannibis is safe but one of my friends went psychotic & killed a loved family member after smoking pot. Another became increasingly paranoid, untill he would no longer speak to even his closest friends & family, & completely alone in the world he killed himself.

Big scary problem right now and even more for the future. Its scary because when I was a kid 40 yrs ago..... homeless people didnt work. Homeless people when I was a kid were just homeless, no work. Today we have many homeless people who work and still cannot afford to live. Big problem.

Thank you for showing the story of the Rite Aid employee at the beginning - it really humanizes her and makes you rethink some stereotypes about the homeless. She works hard - has a job, contributes - but is having a hard time finding a place to live in that city.
But that only truly describes about 1% of the homeless.

It shows the reality of how utterly fcked up the cost of living vs wages are here. A manager of a store should be able to afford at least a small place to live. I've worked at a hospital for 6 years as part of the surgical department and wouldn't be able to afford my own one bedroom apartment unless it was really far away from my work or in a very bad neighborhood, but even those are becoming unaffordable now. My boyfriend has a good paying full time job and still the only house we could maybe ever afford to buy in Portland is in a neighborhood where there are shootings every.single.day. I hate it when I see comments that tell people to just "move away". How can someone afford to move if they can't afford to save for moving expenses?..... I don't believe this is only a Portland problem though. It seems to be happening in a lot of places in the U.S. Biden needs to take care of Americans first so that we will be stable enough to help other countries. Just my opinion.
I used to run a drop in center in Lowell Massachusetts and do homeless outreach. I'll tell you something...the absolute sweetest, kindest, and giving people I ever encountered were the homeless that I did outreach for.

Largely not true. They are drug users, alcoholics, criminals and just plain lazy people.
An update: Daria Anderson, one of the women featured in the documentary, has moved into her own apartment with her adult son. She'd been on a waiting list. “I cried for a couple days,” said Anderson, who had been sleeping in an emergency shelter at night, and working as a floor supervisor at Rite-Aid during the day. “I’ve just been looking around. It has four walls. This is an apartment!”

I do not cry easily. This, easily, made me tear-up. I love that lady.
I lived in Portland 2003-2004. At the time, I was younger and living out of my car, but the situation in the streets was nothing like it is now. One thing that I did see that was getting worse was gentrification. I can't imagine that having any positive effect on the current situation.
I throughly appreciated this documentary, very well produced and I really was captivated, with the visual content, it’s nice to see all angles of it.
My favourite was the rite aid worker ❤ she is just so positive
So thankful they let her keep her pup with her in the shelter. I pray she finds housing. So many of us, myself included, are in the same or similar situation. Something has got to give.

@Jay, Portland doesn't attract homeless people , Portland created homeless people. The rents and housing prices inflated beyond their worth almost overnight. My experience ; My darling beautiful super nice studio apartment ( heat and cable included) went from the $425 a month to $1200 a month. That was after the interior decorator came in and slapped on some wall paper and redid what did not be redoing . The apartment was well maintained by me . It had the charm and character of older days. Two things in particular were cool, the bathroom had the original honeycomb tile floor and the shower had flamingo pink and black tile. REAL tile. Nothing chipped or broken. Lots of closets and storage space. Now that was in 2001. Last time I checked on the place the listing price was $230,000 for that studio apartment. I hope that gives you a realistic perspective of what happened to my beloved City of PORTLAND. I moved away before it got as bad as it is now. Greater opportunity elsewhere. I will always be in gratitude of that beautiful city and the community that I lived in.

As I watched this, I got so emotional hearing the sad stories of how hard the struggle is and what these people have gone through. My husband found himself homeless 10 years ago, and he spent many rough nights either literally outside, or in an abandoned warehouse. He did not have a stable life growing up, his mother brought men into their home who were abusive to him and she allowed it!! He no longer speaks to her and she makes dumb excuses and doesn't see any wrong in how she mothered him growing up!! Later, as a teen, he acted out, got sent to juvenile detention centers, and became addicted to drugs. In the throes of being homeless, he went to church, tried to find work, helped at shelters, and eventually he befriended an older lady who actually saw him for the amazing person he is. She let him stay in her home, the basement was like a one bedroom apartment. As long as he worked, helped with yard work, etc
She basically became his "second mom". We met 7 years ago, I fell for him the moment we locked eyes we were working in the same department store and he was already clean from all drugs!! We now have a beautiful apartment, 2 sweet cats, both have new and great jobs. He works 50 hours a week and he will never go back to his past. People need to stop being so judgemental of others situations, this world would be so great with more compassion and love for your fellow humans!!! .
I hear you Sis...I was a homecoming princess in high school and became homeless secondary to cocaine addiction. Now clean 35 years, grADUATED FROM THE uNIVERSITY OF cALIFORNIA AND AM A lICENSED THERAPIST. i HAVE WORKED WITH THE HOMELESS and loved it. @@vanessadobbins6885 You got that right. So right! I knew a guy who was on the ropes, devastated by medical conditions, and was amazed how many people either did not care or some actually tried to push him over the edge.

own mother. She sounds worthless, I don't blame your husband for not talking to her, not having anything to do with her. I know somebody who would go on and on about family should help family yet wouldn't even help his very own brother when, thru no fault of his own, was racked with medical conditions, lost his job, could barely walk - even though he had the means to help and from what I understand tried to actually push him into homelessness. Completely correct. That's part of the problem - people think its all the individuals fault conveniently forgetting how many people helped them along the way. All this nonsense about self-reliance when they had free education and tax breaks and yes many times help from individuals or family members to see they don't fall thru the cracks or become homeless. After they got a ton of breaks they puff their chest out and claim they did it on their own. The stereotypes of homeless being worthless down-n-out losers who caused their own problems are, in many cases, just not true. That your husband found somebody who befriended him, see the potential in him, took him under their wing is very fortunate. I know a guy who was once homeless and the kind of "help" he got was handed some literature, pointed to the nearest shelter and shoved in that direction. Another thing I noticed was that people don't want to help b/c they feel the homeless are totally ungrateful but it would seem to me that getting somebody off the streets would be its own reward. Helping somebody become a productive member of society would be its own reward. Ever hear of Homeless to Harvard? The Liz Murray story.

She’s so positive and cheerful! There’s no excuse for our senior population who are still working and I may add there’s no excuse for seniors in this Country to be sleeping on the ground! It’s shameful!

You must be at least 62 to get a reduced payment, 66 or 67 (depending on birth year) for full benefits, and at least 65 for medicare. Most people work until full retirement age.

Homeless people are like feral people.
When a film only gives you half the story it is because they want you to see it the way they do and not allow you to draw your own conclisions. And that makes me feel like I am being played. So I watched this objectively. I saw a couple living in a tent who made nothing but excuses yet used all the right phrases ( "we pray", "we start a fire to stay warm", "we put in hours to get help but we are not (fill in the blank) so we can't get no help".), etc.
But they said they had an income and used to have a home. After seeing the absolute pig sty of their tent, I had to wonder if that was why they lost their home. Was it condemned or did their landlords evict them because they lived in filth like that? Then I saw a woman working a f/t job who had a neat clean car, not filled with trash, who slept in a make shift shelter rather than in a tent outside in the cold amongst garbage. She was doing what she could to help herself rather than whining about not getting help while living in squalor. Even in the most dire circumstances, we have choices. So who would you rather help? Someone helping themself or someone making excuses?

I used to be a young jerk to homeless people but ive changed a lot and have more empathy. Having gone through job losses I feel for them. All these helpers are angels. Anyone can become homeless.

Me and my family lived in a travel trailer for two years in Central Oregon (technically homeless for 2 years) after losing our 15-year rental because landlord retired and sold all his rentals. We learned really quickly that there were no more affordable rentals in Central Oregon. So, we purchased a travel trailer and lived in it for 2 years while we saved & saved until we were able to afford to buy our own home because it was actually easier & cheaper to buy a home at that time than it was to find and pay for another rental. We bought our home just months before the home prices increased to very high prices and if we would have waited even just a couple months longer to buy a home, we would still be living in our travel trailer guaranteed because the prices of homes are now out of reach for most average income households. The housing crisis in Oregon is real and it's just going to get worse because average Oregon wages don't match the rental prices anymore. Rental & home prices just keep increasing but the Oregon wages are not. I know another family with 6 kids who lost their rental about the same time we did and they lived in a motel room for many months and could not find a rental and they finally had to move away to another State just to find a home for their kids.
Is it possible for u to move somewhere cheaper? If you have a hardworking man in your family who can work….my husband can get them a job tomorrow…..starting about 20 dollars an hour….this is in Florida….another more affordable state is Texas..

There are so many factors involved with why people end up homeless, but as far as affordability goes, it comes down to this: when property developers and housing management companies realize they can get away with charging more, they will. Then they push and push it up as far as they can possibly go. Give it time, and greed always takes over. My neighborhood is getting absolutely destroyed by new "luxury" apartment buildings that cram people in like sardines and charge a fortune. My landlord just sold our older building to a developer who is going to tear it down and build one of those atrocities. We've all been given one month to leave. Never mind that it's the holidays. Never mind that most of us have lived here for years (some for 10+ years!), have always been on time with rent, and have always been employed. They just don't care, and ultimately the government doesn't either.

Found myself on the very streets in this video for a few months last year. I’m very grateful to be out of that situation and doing better in life but I’ll never forget the great people who helped me with meals, showers, and friendship despite my situation. Love to everyone still out there.

This situation is a tragedy playing out all over the western world. The route of the problem is Governments and banks commoditizing human dwellings as investment vehicles, doing all they can to ensure these dwellings continue to rise in price and remain in a supply shortage. Government willingly dividing society into winners and losers.

My heart breaks for all the people who become homeless. Every precious person has their own circumstances and struggles that led to their homeless status. Rents are exorbitantly high and affordable housing, even for the disabled, is severely lacking. It is shameful that so many Americans are struggling and suffering.

Watching this video brought back so many memories of living in and around Portland. For 2 years my son and I were homeless and living off of 162nd and Burnside. Having to learn how to survive, to be safe at night, to find a place where to park, so I could sleep and then go to work construction. We had problems but we also had other homeless individuals that would watch out for us. We lived in tarps, to tents and then finally buying an older car helped us. Being able to work helped, but not being able to afford the high rent was what forced us to become homeless. Thank God for those organizations such as the free portable showers, receiving medical care through NARA Indian Health Clinic, and Outside In. No one ever says that they will never be homeless....but it only takes being 1 paycheck away from being on the streets. The saddest thing is knowing that there are families with kids that are living on the streets. I wish that those who participated in the video are safe and have made progress in getting the services that they need.

@@bonsummers2657 Potential renters didn't have to pay a non-refundable fee just to apply for an apartment in 1980. Crummy apartments back then cost less than 1/4 the minimum monthly wage of a full time worker, while rents on dives are over 5/8 of those monthly wages now, which disqualifies applicants, who are required to have an income 3 times higher than rent. Monthly rent for a decent one bedroom apartment is currently higher than the monthly mortgage payment on a 3 bedroom house. Realistically, that's a big part of the problem.
When you rent, it's not hard to lose your home through no fault of your own, but once you lose your home, it is very, very hard to keep your job. And if you lose your job while you have no permanent address, it's almost impossible to secure employment. Employers see a homeless, jobless person the same way most of our society does. They don't want them nearby.

Managing money is different from accumulating wealth, and the lack of investment education in schools may explain why people struggle to maintain their financial gains. Funny, I kind of hate it. It seems like a euphemism to gloss over the scale of their suffering. They are not guests, they are homeless in the country that is most equipped to help them in all the world. Where our politicians spend all of their time playing red vs blue instead of coming together to do something constructive. I live half-way around the world and saw this docu by accident. My heart goes out to all these people - the homeless and those who help. So touching and beautiful to see so many people still being compassionate about their "neighbors". Having seen a lot of the devastation and total misery created by the US governments in other countries I can't help but wonder: why doesn't the US government take care of its own people and leave other countries/people alone? Please do not believe this political bullshit! I live here and know first hand that way too many people use lies and manipulation to avoid any personal responsibility for themselves. Yes, there are legitimately poor, struggling people who are mentally ill, or otherwise unable to fend for themselves. But many of these supposed downtrodden are whats known as hucksters. They want to get HIGH, HOUSED, FED, TREATED MEDICALLY, TRANSPORTED and ENTERTAINED on someone elses dime. They use and abuse. They rob, riot and destroy with impunity, and make sad faces to the camera while they laugh behind our backs. This so called documentary is just another American lie. Remember that people have rights but also have to be wise. Portland is one of the most beautiful places in the world to live, which is why it costs so much to live there. Like imagine people complaining they can't afford downtown Manhattan or the Paris, that is similar to people complaining about not being able to afford Portland. It is like living a permeant vacation. Most of the non-addicted homeless in Portland could change their lives in one day by buying a bus ticket to a great plains state like Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, ND, or SD where housing and jobs are plentiful. But people don't want to live in an extreme weather environment, small town, even if the bare necessities are easy to get. Moving to a location because of weather, politics, environment means a certain amount of risk. Our ancestors would have moved because of the desire for basic needs not to live in a permanent vacation setting or because of common politics.

People flock to west coast cities for the social programs and the easy living but this can only happen for so long before the area is saturated. There are two known outcomes...either Portland and San Francisco will be much harsher against the addicted to the point where the unhoused and addicted move away, which will create a better environment for those still left to receive services, or these cities will continue to address the issue by decriminalizing and attempting to use social programs when there aren't enough people to serve the programs. The tax payers will leave and the cities will decay for a time. Urban saturation is not a new thing, but people have only moved for location and services recently. It breaks my heart to see this. I'm an Amazon Driver in Portland, and it's gotten so bad in the last few years. Almost anywhere that you could imagine trying to set up a camp or RV there is one now. The clean up crew folks weren't lying, it's literally just a rotation. I'll see camps, then one day they'll be gone and people cleaning up. Then a week later more folks have moved in. And it just repeats over and over again.
I wish I was somehow able to help people, but I'm barely making it myself. I work 40-60 hours a week and am barely surviving the cost of living out here. In fact, if I didn't rent from a friend, and lived alone, there is no way I could do it.
Unfortunately I also do not know how to solve the issue, because as someone said in this video, it's a complex situation. Some of it is insane rent inflation over the last 5 years, mostly caused from out-of-state investors buying literally EVERYTHING up and fixing rent prices. Some of it is a broken healthcare system. A lack of mental health care. I don't know what the solution is, but at the current rate, a lot of people that were barely making it will no longer be making it with the cost of everything being what it is in 2022.
I was homeless on and off for years, 10x. I would find a place, then couldnt afford it and get kicked out. Due to me having a deep understanding of what it is like.. I did take in a variety of people over the years.. 35 people at various times. It always seemed to go the same way. People get really comfortable at the 2 week time mark.. All the help they do around the house slows down or stops. Some pay rent for a month, then decide they want a discount or are not in the mood to pay it at all. I finally had to quit helping people when I got robbed. Also threatened by one guy when I would not drive him where he wanted, when he wanted. Someone told me that the drugs people are on now makes helping people difficult cuz they are unpredictable. I think that abandoned stores and malls need to be opened up and used as shelter for these people.. many are campted outside unused buildings..its too much for one person to do
Facts. I think about all of those things every day. I also wonder how many more people are going to develop serious mental health issues from dealing with the ever increasing stress that started 2 years ago. I know that I have changed. My job is very stressful, but even when I'm not at work, I can never fully relax. I'm constantly on guard, wondering if my car will get stolen/broken into, my house will get robbed, some twacked out drug addict will try to rob me....and I'm not feeling fearful as much as I'm feeling anger about how messed up everything has become. I know I'm not the only one who is experiencing these same feelings. What will happen when people start snapping from all of the pressure? But, on the other hand, maybe I'm reading too much into the situation. Maybe I'm imagining things are worse than they seem. Who knows?🤷♀
Don't feel bad for not helping man. There are people with billions of dollars and they choose to simply do nothing. Influencers who keep pushing out crap content on TikTok, Instagram, and whatnot, while doing 0 to help these. I also blame the political system worldwide as well - it's not just a US issue. Back like 50 years ago, even in the socialist states you could get like a "sponsored house" where a young couple was able to choose from a few house designs, and they got the land cheap, the house was affordable, etc. And, there were these soviet bloc houses that allowed many people to live under a small footprint. Honestly, they are not so bad. Certainly much better than this.

Every day we learn of a new tragedy of mass shootings, to where if it doesnt happen for a day, this is unusual. I worked in Portland for three months in 2008, cleaning up flood victims...there was a very large GoodWill center where all things that came into GW were sorted and sold right off the sorting tables...I was shocked by the sheer amount and the good quality of all the second hand items that they were selling (leather purses; designer clothing, etc)..it was obvious that even at that time that people were losing their homes/places to live and were having to turn out all of their living items to be sold by others...these were not people just giving a few worn items to GW--these were entire households that were being turned over to GW because the people could no longer house their belongings...it was a bit shocking and overwhelming...dts/usa

@Matt it's not always as simple as having a full time job. Once you're homeless in Portland, it's really difficult to get off the street. Most apartments require a mailing address, birth certificate, credit check, some require you to make over a certain dollar amount per month, etc. ect. She could have medical debt or something holding her back. Who knows. 🤷♀️
I wish this documentary shared how these people ended up homeless so people would understand how easily it can happen and how hard it can be to escape, but I understand they didn't want to breach their privacy too much.

I happened on this video and watched it because I have been homeless in PDX, mostly in the downtown area because that is were the meals and shelters were. I don't think anyone who has been homeless can ever forget what they experienced. It is a day-by-day existence, with little hope for permanent solutions. It was an interesting view on the issue, including the business and services parts of the problem. What happens now is not solving the problem, and when something disastrous happens it will become a much larger issue. In economic crises, people move to big cities thinking there will be more jobs. I wish better solutions would be created now.
In the same weekend two different colleagues were assaulted and one had a cheek bone broken, another had his jaw broken by homeless. There is no efforts to take dangerous people off the streets. If Portland is not made safe I am moving my business. That’s all I ask, make it safe. Currently it is a dangerous place to live
I understand your frustration. Too much pity that passes for empathy, allowing the folks who work hard and try, to end up frequently at the mercy of the deranged, addicted and remorseless. As well as a ridiculous governing system that acts like it is normal to be assaulted for riding the bus, or out for a walk.
My cousin was homeless for several years due to financial issues related to being disabled. She was assaulted so badly by housed people that she had to stay in the hospital for a couple weeks. What about that problem?
Oh my! The video was good for what it was intending to portray, but it’s almost as if it’s taboo to report on the other reality that comes along with the mass homeless issue.
I was homeless for one day, with no money and nowhere to stay. I got through it but it was the most miserable 24 hours of my life. I have no idea how these people make it through day after day. Maybe we should all spend a day living like this, I bet there would be a major change in attitude to this problem.
Especially try living like the poor man in a wheelchair with an amputated limb.

I was homeless for 3 days, I moved to a new city on January 1st, and I couldn't move into my apartment until the leasing manager came back to work on the 3rd, I had to stay in a Motel 6 for 3 days, the humanity of it all!
So true, you never know where you will find yourself, your life can change in a minute!!

what an indicment of washington dc totally appalling i am living in london we have a housing crisis but nothing on this level when ever i moan about draughts in my home i remind myself of less fortunate people and shame myself peace and love to you all and i pray for your salvation
Bless all of our brothers and sisters doing their best in the hardest of times. That goes for folks giving and receiving. This story is a great reminder for all of us to approach people with kindness and compassion. We have a long road ahead, but a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
Why wasn't the situation as destitute in 1980, for example? What happened to make the problem?
@@bonsummers2657 Potential renters didn't have to pay a non-refundable fee just to apply for an apartment in 1980. Crummy apartments back then cost less than 1/4 the minimum monthly wage of a full time worker, while rents on dives are over 5/8 of those monthly wages now, which disqualifies applicants, who are required to have an income 3 times higher than rent. Monthly rent for a decent one bedroom apartment is currently higher than the monthly mortgage payment on a 3 bedroom house. Realistically, that's a big part of the problem.
When you rent, it's not hard to lose your home through no fault of your own, but once you lose your home, it is very, very hard to keep your job. And if you lose your job while you have no permanent address, it's almost impossible to secure employment. Employers see a homeless, jobless person the same way most of our society does. They don't want them nearby.
I don't understand why you say this is the hardest time there is more job opportunities than ever. There's just too many people wanting handouts get a job

I am so so so grateful beyond words to all of the many people who provide services for the unhoused in Portland. A family member ended up on the streets there a few years back due to a sudden and severe mental health crisis. Fortunately he joined the rhythms of the other unhoused folks accepting the shelter and drop in services offered downtown. Because of these places, I knew where to find him sometimes, even though I couldn't get him to come home with me. I am happy to share that he is now safely housed with family. If it wasn't for the kind hearted strangers looking out for his basic needs during that time though, I don't know if he would still be alive. The mentally ill are some of the most if not the most vulnerable members of society, and society largely doesn't understand what a mental health crisis is, or how to handle it. Every meal, every toothbrush, every bandaid, every opportunity to use a restroom, it is all so important for the unhoused, and every day that the homeless services workers give to their jobs and volunteer jobs is a gift beyond measure for those they're helping as well as for the people who love them. Thank you.
The "unhoused" is such a silly term. What about people who live in apartments and not houses. Are they "unhoused"?
@@PapagenoMF I thought the same at first. But after having it explained as differentiating all the non-physical things attributed to what 'home' is from a dwelling it makes more sense than not.
Houseless is similar in sound, cadence etc. so was prob. the "best" transition (as opposed to domescille-less or temporarily living arrangement impaired) from homeless.
Tbh to ME: not a big deal/difference. But to some it is. When said ppl are truly grappling for any semblence of normalcy & for whatever reasons feel better if I phrase somethin a bit different: I say why not oblige? Terms & speach change during every year of every generation. I'll figure out how to cope.😉✌️

I was homeless for the last ten years due to disability and high rent prices, no family and low income. I am a twice college graduate with high honors and on the alumni. I was a Certified Nursing Assistant for 20 years and then a Surgery Coordinator for 12 yrs. I spent my entire life helping people, going to church, taking care of the elderly. I am a good person, very polite and intelligent as well as very , very clean. I am still living in my van. I too get staring people who make very rude remarks. When you are homeless, you are at rock bottom. You feel helpless, exhausted form stress due to survival being the daily routine. I am alone and was stalked because I have a nice vehicle. I am still homeless , but now have a good place to park at night at my church. Still, I get so lonely and feel like I am on the fringe of society. I miss simple things like sitting at a table to prepare a sandwich or trying to sort out my medications. The little things lin life most take for granted, being able to see after dark and being able to walk around and move and not sit in a van all day because it's raining and no money to go anywhere inside. The hateful people, the people with every advantage hating us just because we have nothing and no one to help us are the meanest, coldest, judgmental people in the world. Shame on them.
Is the list for low income housing long where you live? I have heard in the larger cities it can take 10 years

I’ve known Many people who spin a good tale very convincingly about what kind of person they are and the facts just don’t add up that they’re living on the street. As I noted earlier, there is a behavior problem. Not a homeless problem. There are plenty of homes that are available for rent starting at $600. I literally just looked it up on Craigslist. Somebody working a minimum wage job can afford that. Don’t believe the fictitious stories pumped out by the poverty pimps! Oh and by the way, I slept in my car a few nights by choice as it saved money and time instead of driving home. That is not homeless.

This is what happens when you let shady companies buy up residential properties all over the country that are meant for regular people to live in.
Exactly, they raise the rent for their greedy selves so no one can afford it, When is this going to be confronted? This should not be allowed, rent should be capped by a certain percentage and it should be made a law, this is ridiculous! No one should work 2/3 jobs or have multiple people under 1 roof just to pay rent! People who could do something about this need to stop turning a blind eye!!
I wish the best for homeless trying to find a better life, but the ones who keep damaging our businesses and robbing people at knifepoint deserve an extremely ruthless awakening. Asylum or prison for the violent ones/thieves. The rest lets do our best to help.

I feel for everyone without a home or safe place to sleep. I have been there. Ill keep them in my prayers.
My husband and I along with our children 11, 8 and 4 were homeless for five years in Arizona. It is something I wouldn't wish on anyone. I thank God for every single thing we have today. This was during the worst time for our economy 2008-2013. The jobs were nonexistent and family members that helped were far and few. Luckily for a few months we were able to be at a family shelter but other than that it was pretty hard. We had to sleep outside with our children and my husband had to stay up all night to watch over us. I pray that all of these people get help somehow and bless all those who have helped and continue to give help. Being homeless is a very humbling experience.
Ma’am..I was homeless in Phoenix . Sleeping in your car in the summer was horrible. The city doesn’t help and the CASS location is now on 19th Ave? The city’s priority is to grow the tax base. They could careless..Phoenix is not a place to be if your homeless and in need.
Jobs were non existent? I don't believe that. This country is the easiest place to find jobs. They are everywhere

I am far from two paychecks from homelessness.
Funny that during the pandemic when people were all given tens of thousands in stimulus checks and free unemployment that people bought new cars and tv's and on and on.
Invested everything I got.
People are one or two paychecks away from being homeless because your average American is Stupid. Plain and simple. I am 64 and have more money than god. I know this because every Sunday god is begging for money in the churches!

I've been homeless for the past 10 yrs give or take up here in Canada and I've struggled to get help because I'm not addicted, don't have children and I'm not disabled. I'm fully employed and just need a bloody leg up and it's definitely impossible getting a bit of help.

I was young and homeless in Portland, back then there weren't whole camps in residential neighborhoods, mostly downtown. That was one of the scariest times of my life and I pray that the ones that want more, get blessed with a home, livable wage job, and the support that they need mentally, emotionally and spirituality. 🙏🏽💜🙏🏽

This was a beautifully presented documentary that exhibited the multiple layers that contribute to the homeless/houseless problem. Compound that with multigenerational trauma, addiction and so many other issues, this isn't an easy fix by shoveling money at it. This needs comprehensive, multifaceted approach to tackle the issues that so many people face. It's not just Portland, Seattle, LA and Philadelphia. It's your cousin, friend, sister, niece, nephew... We all own this. As a society, we need to fix it. .

I was homeless for 6 years. I am blessed to have a roof over my head n a washing machine. I never left rubbish in our neighbourhood. Life is good

Excellent documentary. At the end, the girl living in her motor home (tiny house) with her daughter…when she smiles and her voice is heard saying “if we work together we can get a lot done” gave me goosebumps, made me smile and tear up at the same time. Bless everyone helping others in this video (the foot washing and shower trailer are both things I’ve never seen before but give me hope). Bless those seeking help and those not yet seeking it.

I salute and really admire these volunteers and humanitarian individuals who do help these homeless people. The stories/comment here who are former homeless but managed to get out of their situation are commendable.
I spent a decade on the streets while in Major Depression. My first (of three) suicide attempts was in Portland.
It has been a decade pater. I am doing well these days. But if you are struggling to get by with what you have, I still bring tears to my eyes, even now. It is a character flaw, having to do what I had to make things move, and a positive character trait. When you lived in such conditions you develop strength and positive traits that you will help others develop their own strengths.

The problem with the charity and social services is that it only subsidizes their drug addictions. If they get free food, and clothing, thats more money for drugs. Help should be given to those who go into treatment, or are in sober living and working to rebuild their lives. But these addicts are literally having people wash their feet for them. That's crazy.
As a formerly homeless person, not all homeless people are substance abusers!
