It is not up to the government to "solve" this crisis, but it is up to the government to move all its rules and regulations out of the way and let the free market resolve the issues of supply and demand.

It's horrendous in the UK for young folk these days. Looking back to 1991, my partner was pregnant and we got a mortgage on an old house for 22,000 pounds. I was a bus driver on 10,500 pounds a year. The mortgage was 110 pounds a month which was about 15% of my wages. My missus didn't need to work. Nowadays, a bus driver earns 3 times as much as I did in 1991, but house prices are 10-15 times as higher than 1991.... Now that's the problem!

Are native brits breeding more now than we did in the 80s/90s?
I don’t think so! Statistically we are choosing to have smaller families and children much later.
So how do we not have enough housing in 2024?
Answer 1 - mass unregulated immigration.
Answer 2 - local housing being brought by non locals and turned into HMOs or air BNBs for greedy landlords.

When my mum grew up there, the entire place was lived in. Our generation is suffering through the greed of the baby boomers

The white population of this earth peaked in 1930. If you look at the population of major cities they're often lower than they were then even with our foreign friends. London peaked 1939,paris in 1922, Manhattan in 1910, Berlin 1939, my home city is still 50,000 shy of its 350,00 peak.
I've never seen anyone go into real detail on this matter. As for the choosing to have less children take a look at the of abortions per year, the culture is the problem not the housing.
Personally I think bankruptcy is our only hope.

You are right about our population. In fact the world population (surprisingly) is predicted to slow down (which surely is a good thing.) There are so many 2nd (or even 3rd or 4th homes - yes, really - l have lived and worked in the next county along which has a similar problem with housing - l personally knew of people who truly had more '2nd homes' than you could count on one hand.) I really don't think constantly building is necessary - just use the current housing stock better - this programme highlighted this when talking about the problem not being as out of control before masses of homes got bought up in 2020. Places like St.Ives are now bringing in tougher rules about 2nd homes - the rest of these places need to have the 'courage' (and honesty) to do the same.

I'm 64 and disabled/unable to work. I'm 'lucky' to live in a tiny council flat - but at least I have one, and have a roof over my head. I had to go to the local Pantry today. I don't drive and it's a struggle to get there. I haven't been for over 3 weeks because of the difficulty getting to and from there. It's very good as its £5 for the bus fare, + £5 for £20 worth of food - it's a Godsend. It takes me 4 to 5 hours for the round trip, due to the horrendous bus service (it'd take 40 minutes round trip in a car). I'm always very ill by the time I get home, and am wiped out for the next few days. 90% of the people who go there, are foreigners - they live within walking distance of the church where it's held. Today, they said we could have one extra 'luxury item' as its their 2nd year of being. Open. I was number 18 in the queue. EVERY foreigner came out, with their items, and large tubs of Quality Street chocolates, or 2 boxes of chocolates. When it got to my turn, I was given a small pack of low calorie 5 pack of cereal bars!!! There were tubs of chocolates available, but I was told 'they weren't for me'!!! Other English people had the same as me - the large boxes and tubs were only available to the foreigners!!!!!! I know this isn't anywhere near as awful as being homeless, but I just wanted to point out the truth of how us indigenous people are treated VERY differently to foreigners. It's despicable and latent.

Homelessness is a massive problem everywhere. I left the wife last year due to domestic abuse & lived in a Mini for 3 months. I work & earn the most I've ever earned although it's only a bit above minimum wage. I could rent a 1 bed flat where I live for 3 weeks wages. The 4th weeks wage would hopefully cover the extortionate bills & fraudulent claims such as council tax but that's not a given. So, I work 50-60 hours a week to live in a box & rely on a food bank to eat with nothing left for any kind of pleasure whatsoever. Can someone, anyone, make that make sense to me??? What that is, is modern day slavery whith chains you can't see. While I lived in the mini I saved & bought a van which I now live in full time. I still work & it works for me. I love the way I live now but if anything happens to my van, I'll be street homeless, losing everything, again, for the 5th time! I don't do poor me, I just work hard to make my life how I want it to be & try to help others. If you see a homeless person speak to them. Acknowledge they are there ffs. The worst part of street homeless for me, is being invisible to the flag waving virtue signallers. You'll take in a Ukranian from a fake war but can't bare to even look at the homeless guy, sat freezing outside Tesco!

I was homeless for two years. People don't realise how many just ended up there through bad times. I've seen many people that are pretty normal people become homeless that are now substance abusers or alcoholics. You try living like that without anything to numb it. Especially through winter. I have my own place again now and I'm moving forward but yeah, I did drugs and drank when I was homeless. It made it so much easier to deal with it. That's the reality of it. At first it's easier to deal with, then it starts to get at you. Then you start breaking down slowly and the harder it gets the more it gets at you making it harder still again. And then you get hit by winter which hits your body. You get through it. Move on. Get on with things. Then another winter starts approaching....

    • @Freiya2011
      @Freiya2011 6 месяцев назад

I'm denying it! There's a connection between rich people getting richer and richer and investing ruthlessly into houses which they then rent out to other rich people who come from outside the UK having no clue what the prices really are - so they pay 2000£ monthly rent for some stylish den. That way the price for rent becomes unaffordable. It's not the ones who are still more miserable than you who are the problem. It's the reckless, irresponsible, capitalist, egocentric "investors"! And the short-sighted city administrations who allow them to act that way! Stop selling out property to foreigners! Stop transferring homes into airB&B!

I'm not in the UK but in the US. I am 67 years old and disabled. I have what in the UK would be called a pension and my deceased husband's military retirement. I live in an overpriced apartment (flat) for $1450./month. There are no windows to the outside so I never know if it's daylight or dark. My monthly Social Security cheque is $1500. I too am looking into finding an affordable bus or van to renovate into living quarters for one. I don't know how I'll do the renovations by myself at my age and disability but I know I cannot afford to pay to have it done even though I do know how to do it myself. I too live in a beach tourist area where the shop help and food service workers are paid minimum wage. I guess they have partners or family to live with. This was a basically affordable area where you could buy a small home that needed some work for $150K but that has more than doubled in six years. I despair for what the next generation will have to deal with but I am more concerned with getting through the remainder of my life with a roof over my head.

They rent them out during the summer and they stand empty the rest of the year it's disgraceful we have businesses we own and kids in school etc but can't find a property to rent. It's a lack pf housing for local population, airbnb and hotels are more profitable than making homes for private or social renting. Cornwall has 96.8% white. So it's clearly not immigrants is it? It's local policy and the pull factors of being a seaside town.

As GDP increases the majority get poorer which us why it's a useless measurement of our economic success particularly as it's been artifically boosted by population increase via mass immmigration. When you hear the words 'we need to grow the economy' it simply means we need more immigration to boost GDP but without the necessary investment in infrastructure and housing.

I'm 53, divorced and been homeless nearly 2 years.
I work full time and have long term health conditions.
Homechoice is pointless, private renting is unaffordable after I've paid my child maintenance and my ex wife went bankrupt after we separated and ruin my credit rating. I don't have any debt, don't use any non prescription drugs and don't drink.
Sleeping in a car exacerbates my health problems, trying to stay clean and tidy for work appearances is difficult. My diet is terrible and I have lost so much weight I'm now classed as malnourished.
I only see my children for short periods because they can't stay over with me.
    I'm not living, I'm existing.
If you are homeless and work there is no help and I don't want to claim benefits and stop working. The system that is supposedly there to help, just creates misery and despair. What's the point of it all.

No barges or hotel rooms for Brits?
According to reports the number of homeless in Cornwall is 'estimated' to be 1500. It is in all probability MUCH higher.
1500 people? That's just THREE DAYS worth of ARRIVALS.
Can we TRULY not find a way to accommodate our OWN?!!!
The real irony here is that although Cornwall is one of the Biggest Counties in the UK it has probably the LOWEST quota of Migrants, Refugees and Asylum seekers allocated to them!

Supply and demand issues, with wage increases causes inflation to rise, all roads lead to too many people wanting things which we can't supply, so the pressure is alleviated by inflation rises to sort the situation out. Millions of less people would fix the problem, but millions arrive annually making the situation much worse anyone with half a brain should be able to see that.

Same in Worthing.. Locals elderly and Veterans sleeping in the bushes while huge numbers of Kurds Afghans and Syrians are beautifully accommodated .. When our Council said publicly that not one of these foreign Nationals had been given a Council House, they were being devious and dishonest.. So its true none were given council housing stock, but all were accommodated in the private sector, which of course we pay for .. Worse still, greedy landlords, realising these immigrants will be accommodated regardless, shove their tenants out under false pretences and immediately fill their properties with the immigrants, with the murky agencies facilitating this, able to pay up to six time the usual rent.. We have failed our people whilst bending over backwards to meet the needs of illegals and foreign Nationals .. Absolutely disgusting

How many landlords have sold off the properties out from underneath these renters? How many of these people were kicked out so that the landlords could make them into airbnb's? Airbnb has completely destroyed housing and no one wants to talk about it.

I live in a similar tourist town in Australia and we also have a LOT of homeless and van dwellers. My theory is ban that awful awful air BnB. it has stripped so many residences out of the rental market into the holiday lets. SO many stand empty in between the seasons. Makes my blood boil. The flip side is there are other places not in this popular destination with lots of accomodation, but a lot of the young folk affected by this want to live here even though they realistically cant afford it.
