    Word of advise, hose your scratch coat down on shower before applying top coat, then it won't set up on you as fast. A brush just doesn't get enough water on. Other than that, very nice 👌 mix ratios spot on, I always add lime as you say makes it more usable and gives a little flexibility and helps prevent cracking.

    If you have an extension with a rendered face on one end but with exposed brick on the other sides, would you use a stop bead at each end as well as a stop bead at the bottom? Looking to re-do the render as it's cracked and scruffy looking. Currently there are no beads anywhere, either at the ends or the bottom but I wonder if adding beads might add some additional strength? Really loving the render series of videos.

    Hey Mate. Awesome Vid. I do rendering nearly everyday. I would suggest getting yourself a brass nozzle hose end for your hose. It as a perfect spray for sand finish render. Also for the love of god get yourself a new bigger float. I’d recommend a larger Refina diamond float and a proper sand finish sponge. Will make it so much easier bud. I can send you a pic of what I mean if you like.

      Hello mate! Thank for your kind words and I'll definately take your suggestions en board. Haha yeah that is a tiny float - it's coming to breaking point so I'll be getting a new one. Are the Diamond floats nice to use on sand cement then? I heard they were just used for the internal referring? Yes please mate, I'd love to see it! Thanks for all your help. It's good to hear from a profession like yourself, cheers 👍

    • @ciadiac
      @ciadiac 4 года назад +1

      Plastering For Beginners cant seem to send a pic on these comments.. but yes the Diamond floats work well on S-C. The diamond indentations on the underside do a great job of filling any small hollows etc as well. Plus a bit bigger than a standard float. Look at sand finish sponges as well. Basically a sponge with a handle on it. Nice and flat surface and you can speed through the finish. Whe I work out how to send a pic I will.

    Fantastic video, thank you. I’ve just build connecting garden walls as raised beds out of concrete blocks. I’ll be rendering them in the next couple of weeks. I have a couple of questions if you don’t mind?As they are new walls, should I apply any stabilising solution first? I don’t think I do, just make sure they are brushed down .. I wanted to check first. Second question, as they are raised beds, do I need to be concerned with damp? Should I apply a waterproof coat before/after the render (or not at all?). Thanks so much.

    Welp, I've watched this vid multiple times now, and it pushed me to have a go myself. It definitely isnt easy for a first timer but like everything practice makes perfect I guess. You make it look way too easy! I'm only doing the front facing walls of my house and it took me nearly a damn day just to get one quarter of it done with just one coat. Which brings me to a question : Is the top coat actually needed? I was trying to see if I could get one coat down and then paint it after a week or two of curing. I keep seeing differing opinions on top coats but you seem to be the man to ask.

    • @PlasteringForBeginners

      Hi!! Well done on your efforts so far. I'd always recommend a top coat because it's another layer of protection - not only that but that's the cost that gives your lovely, flat finish. It's good practice but I suppose you could get away with one coat.

    Hi ya quick question. I've got pebble dash house and basically i have cement blocked up an old external door way. the blocks sit about 1/4 to 1/2 inch deeper than the pebble dash. so that old door that's blocked up way needs to be packed out first (to be level with the pebble dash). What would you suggest? Pack it out level with pebble dash scratch it, let it dry and then put another scratch coat over the whole wall? or would you just build it out and carry on with scratch coat over the whole wall?
    Also MASSIVE thanks to your videos, as they have helped me plaster my new house. I thought I was good until i knocked a light over!! acted as an up light and showed how terrible i was, however that mistake enabled me to get really nice smooth flat walls, using light from all angles!

    The videos you do are some of the best for explaining what to do. With regard to the SBR, I have got concrete blocks to render. The previous owner has painted some of the blocks (I think for choosing a colour). Would you put the SBR directly on to the wall as well as in the mix? Would this help? If you do put it directly on to the wall, do you render immediately or do you wait for the SBR to start to go off. Your advice would be much appreciated, thank you.

    Another fantastic video Blaine!
    I have a question please...I am needing to take on a (similar) project, but my current surface is a previously rendered and painted 1930’s house wall, that looks like it has been patched in places.
    The surface IS already firm and solid, (just a bit rough and unsightly).
    I really don’t want the massive job of hacking off the existing render, so what can I do to ensure a good bond between that old painted render surface and new the mesh / skim coat that I’m wanting to apply?
    I’m really hoping you’ll tell me there’s some sort of brush-on bonding additive that I can use as a key?
    Thanks in advance.

    Very helpful. I'm a plasterer but only really been doing interior plastering in my first year of business and want to expand my services.
    Couple questions.
    If you had a bead on the right side of the wall on your final coat would you of worked from the right side of the wall like you did on your scratch?
    Would a water sprayer be easier than water and brush?
    I've seen a few renderers using speed skims for their ruling off. Any opinion on that?
    When you was rubbing the render down, was that a wooden float?
    Thanks!

    Skimmed a wall in my own house yesterday (2 coats over a bonding coat on a solid wall ( i don't do plastering for a living), It looks good, BUT I STILL can't seem to master the art of the down-swing when skimming, so lots of up-swings for me to get hollows & imperfections out. Do I need to apply more pressure with the trowel on the down-stroke at all?? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks !

    How do you treat the wall when you scrape flat large areas and it doesn't come flat and small chunks fall off so how do I overcome this problem.

    Good job u make it look so easy, couple of questions i struggle with keeping the depth when applying render presume its just by eye until top coat and leveling? When you leveling i presume your dragging up alone the edging (left arm) and then just guessing with right arm as in trying to keep level.. great videos though thanks

      Hi mate. To be honest it's all in the ruling - it's actually quite a strange skill because you are just guessing really. It takes a lot of trial and error but one day it just clicks. Just keep practicing. I know it sounds like a cop out but it's the best answer I've got!!

    Do you hose down the wall to keep the cement hydrated for curing? Great video mate much appreciated.

      I do use a sprayer on hot days but I was just mentioning in a previous comment that I smashed my hand one up last week. Just haven't got round to buying another one yet ha!! But yes... You are right 💪

      Plastering For Beginners how many times would you spray if it was hot? And would you spray something like KRend?

    How would you go about rendering a blue board fence ie using laminated timber posts and timber frame. Blue board then attached to frame on both sides. The info I’ve managed to find says use acrylic render base then a coloured acrylic render top coat. What are your thoughts. Thanks in advance and thank you for taking the time to put these videos together, great work.

    Great vid mate. Would you recommend a light mist spray on a wall to stop it drying out too quickly on a hot day. So after the sponge of?

    • @PlasteringForBeginners
      @PlasteringForBeginners  4 года назад

      Thank you mate I really appreciate that! It's a good idea actually because I have seen render craze before on hot days so it could help. Just make sure it's a light haze because it could affect your finish if there's too much pressure!
