I've been plastering for 20 + years in our family run business.this is the first rendering video I have seen where the guy knows what he is doing and does it the proper way.no one coat nonsense like most and a proper mix
Thank you so much. It's great to hear positive feedback - I really appreciate that. Cheers 👍
You know your shit. This is someone who deserves respect. I can render to a good standard but you are top notch. Would love to spend a couple of weeks with you for some lessons.
Haha thank you mate - thanks for the support! You're a legend 👍
Fair play you make great videos mate. I'm not a qualified plasterer but I've been doing it 14yrs and always looking to learn more, every day's a school day as they say. Great channel.
A think this is the most straightforward video av seen for flat rendering. Easy to follow 👍
Thanks a lot James! I'm glad it's useful and I hope it goes well for you. Cheers 👍

Excellent presentation....! Best of the many I've seen thus far. Answers all my questions and demonstrates the techniques excellently!
One or two coats..? Why is it called a scratch coat? Do you start at the bottom or the top? How thick do you apply the scratch coat? How do you follow up...? What steps in order. When do you do what? When is it ready for the next step? How much pressure do you apply? How wet/ how dry..? etc etc etc.
The answers are all there for a novice like me......!
And I think the video was designed for novices....! (I am a novice (although I am old and retired!)
Thanks for posting!
Thank you so much for your kind words! It's great to hear from you and I really appreciate the feedback. Cheers and thanks again for watching. It means a lot to me 😊
Great video guys. Very informative for us beginners.
Some people on here are making critical comments. These are obviously people that are not beginners, and feel that they know better.
Well, all I can say is that there are many ways to do lots of jobs. This particular method has worked well for me, closely following all of your
methods has meant that my raised borders look amazing.
THANK YOU PBG
Best plastering and rendering vids I have seen on you tube… always explains in detail, Thank you
Thanks a lot for that mate. It means a lot - cheers 👍
What a fantastic video. It’s given me huge confidence to render my new concrete block raised beds myself. Three blocks high, exactly like the one in this video.
That's exactly what I was looking for, thank you, you are really good at explaining what you are doing. Thanks for taking the time.
Cheers mate! I'm glad you found it useful!!
Perfect job Blaine well done mate
Thank you!!
That’s where I went wrong. My first attempt at rendering over the weekend for myself. I kept trying to flatten the sand and cement as soon as I put it on. Cheers for the video, I’ll have another go this weekend. As I scraped it all off 😂.
Glad it's worked out mate and good luck with your second attempt 👍

Thanks pal 😊
Scratcher is called a scarifier 👍 nice video mate
Yeah I know mate - I just like to call them scratchers! It's a bit easier than Scarifier 😂
Definitely the best rendering video I’ve seen. Clear concise and easy to follow. Thank you 👍🏻👌🏻
Thank you. I really appreciate that👍
I was a spread in the UK for a while.....bish bash bosh....loads a money! Hardest graft I ever did. Loved it.....I now work in east Africa trying to show Kenyans how to use a hawk and trowel rather than launching it over and over agin from the floor......😳😳😳
It is a bit like that... Bish, bash, bosh ha!! It was a lot easier when I worked in NZ compared to here in the UK ha. Mate that's amazing. I'd love to do that, what an amazing experience. Fair play to you, I hope it's going well my friend 👌
Thanks buddy great work .... Gonna be doing my first 1 today .....
These videos are a big help. I'm a level 2 appreciate and it's great picking up tips etc. keep up the vids.

Looks absolutely awesome. Have you ever rendered a curved wall?
Thanks that was really helpful 🙂
Lovely job. He makes it look easy and that is skill and experience.
Thank you matey!
Beautiful finish and process. Keen to try it myself but looks a bit too daunting. You mentioned you worked in New Zealand. I'm based here in New Zealand. Anyone you'd recommend in Auckland to render a retaining wall? Thanks.
How long do you reckon hr wise to render a 1 storey 35x 25 ft bungalow as a beginner please ?
I really couldn't say mate. It depends on your level of experience...it's impossible to gauge pal. Sorry!
Fantastic how to video mate thankyou very much.
Thank you mate! I really appreciate that 👍

Thank you pal!
Spot on pal. Great job
Mate i have to give props for this video. I always struggle with render(sand cement) its abit like my kryptonite😂. I dont have any problems with interior plastering but exterior always seems to go wrong for me. Great vid 👍🏻
As always, great videos mate.
Thank you mate, I appreciate that!
Thanks, I'm just learning myself. Got a bit to do on our house. Hope to build our own home one day 👍
Thanks for watching and good luck my friend!!
Brilliant work blaine.. 👍👌👍
Thanks mate - I appreciate that pal 👍
What mix do you use for the scratch coat and finishing coats?
Great vid. Advice please: just had my house rendered. Front and side are ok but the back was rendered in full sun and dried too quick the result looks awful, very patchy how can I rectify this without paying out too much more. Cheers
Excellent videos, I'm thinking of rendering internal block walls that have been painted, how much do I need to key / sand the paintwork before applying the first coat of render?
You can use Rendagrip - it's a primer that's designed to be used in painted surfaces. That's what you need matey!!
Brilliant job , well explained,,quality work 👍👍
Cheers mate 👍
Good teaching skills!!👍
Thank you mate!
Should you mix sbr in with the tender mix? Also what should you prime the wall with? Or just wet it with water?
Great video. What's the mix?
Thanks very good information and presented clearly. Thanks very helpful to me. 👍👍👍🍺
I think a lot people miss the part about keeping the work wet great tip
Works for me. Will try your method on my garage wall.
Good luck pal 💪
Great video thank you 👍👍
Not a problem thanks for watching 👍
Do you need to throw some SBR in the scratch or just stick to FEB? Im wondering if the render helps stop rain coming through the wall on its own or does the cavity do that and theres no need and just stick to FEB?
Hi mate! Yeah you can whack some SBR in the scratch but not the top coat. It makes the scratch very sticky actually and it does have some waterproofing qualities which will definitely help with the moisture control 👍
Great Video. I'm rendering a wall in my garden. apart from removing dust and filling holes with cement is there anyone else 1 should do to prepare the wall :)? or is just applying water sufficient :)?
Hi mate!! Apply some SBR to the wall before rendering - this the perfect primer to use on masonry backgrounds 👍
Easy mate I’ve been rendering pretty much the same way but your mix looks like it’s wetter for longer.. how much sbr are you putting in .. it looks like 3:1 sand cement but I know you said you do 4:1 sub layer and 5:1 wearing course just looks creamy the mix
With lime render going right to left is best. The aggregate size for that work is larger than plastering sand and it tends to falls off more readily. More so with NHL than putty based render, because putty based stuff is more sticky.
Pushing your new render onto and towards the stuff on the wall pushes it in and helps it to stick, compact what there already. If you go left to right, as a right hander, the trowel stretching the stuff and drags render away at the edge.
Your render looks very sticky, which makes it more forgiving.
Another great insight - thank you mate 👍
A right handed plasterer starts on the left and works right, a left handed troweler goes right to left. Doesn't matter but this way your hawk is away from the wall and not in front of you and the wall.
Please could you advice me..I’ve done small rendering jobs by just watching your vids and others but now I’m offered a job that had this big steel mesh if you will on to the wall ..eventually it looks like it’ll b close to 50mm ..maybe slightly more.
My question is..do I just flick the rendering on there until it’s coming thru the mesh so I’d b able to actually work it???
Brilliant. Cheers.
At 10.18 when flattening the wall and you have the low spots, can you just keep on using the long bar thing until the high points are gone and match the low part rather than filling in the low parts with more mortar ?
NIce work. Why go in a different direction on the final coat?
Just to show variations. A lot of old school plasterers recommend that if your rendering then you should lay on right to left if right handed. I just wanted to show that in the video.
How did you attache the beads? Why not render first on the corners and then the beads on the render?
Hi, when you scratch, with the scratcher or sacrificed tool, trying wrapping some insulation tape 6mm from the edge of your tool, this will stop you going deeper than 6mm, and the scratch coat will be more even. Cheers, Mick@A1
Great tip - thanks for that mate I really appreciate it. I'll definately be using that one 👍
Great Video! Couple of questions. Is your feather edge wood or steel? Also how do you keep your render flat and even in the centre when feathering, especially when the wall is wider than your straight edge and you don’t have a bead to lean against? Lastly what was the mix ratio of the materials to get the render nice and creamy?
I always use a steel one mate - I don't like the way the render sets on a wooden Darby but I have used them before mate! It's just practice pal - just follow the render you ruled beforehand! The mix for the top coat is 1 lime, 1 cement, 5 sand. Works wonders 👍
Do I need to get paint off the bricks to do outside rendering? Or just render like you did straight on?
You can use a product called Rendagrip which is a primer to use on painted walls. It's a great product to use for rendering 👍
@@PlasteringForBeginners maybe steel mesh screwed on and then plastered!?!
Hi would you suggest the comb scratcher over the the flexible scarifier . thanks great video
going to try and render a wall, what length and width of trowel should i get, cheers
I'd just get the standard 13" for rendering mate. It's the ideal size 👍
@@PlasteringForBeginners cheers
@@PlasteringForBeginners going to start rendering the outside walls on my small extension,do i take the beading on the corrners right down to the groungd or just as far as the bellcast,,cheers
If you need to true a vey curved wall or a corner that is not 90 degree, how think can you make the render. I have a wall that is 2 inches out of true so its going to be very thick at one end and standard at the other. how many layers drying time etc before it destroys its self. Any advice welcome.
Hi I have been asked to re-render a wall that's an external basement wall below the water table. It's an outside wall garden but behind it is ground and the road. It's not feasible to get behind and tank it, can you suggest best approach to re-rendering it. Should I try and water proof it before scratch coat? Or just lime render it and let the water come through naturally. If so are there suitable paints for this? I am inclined to tell the customer that it will always end up cracking eventually because of hydrostatic pressure and not been tanked. thanks
Did you just use sand and cement for the render? Is it possible to use sand and cement for base and then actual white render for the top coat ? What about using mesh?
absolutely brilliant, thank you very much
Thanks mate, I'm glad you find it useful!
Excellent mate... what type of sand did you use and what ratio thankyou
Cheers mate! It was plastering sand from Jewsons - I don't usually use them but it was great stuff 👍
Cheers mate! It was plastering sand from Jewsons - I don't usually use them but it was great stuff 👍
Great Job. Very helpful, great tips...Thanks. 👍
No worries! Thanks for watching 👍
Great vid again thanks. Have you got any on fixing the beading ... On the outside flower bed for example? Cheers
Hi mate! No I haven't yet pal but I'll try and get one sorted soon my friend 👍
It would be good to link to a video explaining what the preparation before this stage was. Seems like there is quite a lot.
Really helpful video. If you’re rendering the front/back of a house do you do the whole wall at once or do it in stages? If it’s in stages how do you manage it without having a joint line? Cheers
You can do the scratch coat in stages if you have to ( due to bad weather or else) . But the top coat has to be done in one go.
what a great video. may i ask what the mix is for scratch coat and top coat onto concrete blocks. also do u put any additives in the mix.
The top coat render always has to be weaker than the scratch coat render / scratch 4 sand 1 cement & plasticiser
Top coat 5 sand 1 cement & waterproofer or you could use 3/1 scratch 4/1 top coat depending on how strong the mix has to be allow 3/5 days ( depending on weather ) between scratch coat and applying top coat render. As it needs to cure properly between coats
Yet another very well explained video, You have honestly saved me a fortune in the house, managed to do two rooms which we are very happy with, I’m going to build a new koi carp pond outside, what is the best mix for rendering?. Anyway thanks again for all the free information and techniques.
Stephen
Thank you for this comment mate - its great to hear that it's helped you out. Keep us all updated and good luck with your future plastering projects!
Sick plasterer you man 👌🏻
Thank you mate 👍
Hi buddy, thanks for a great video. I’m rendering a small garden wall made of lightweight concrete blocks. Using Krend Base and finishing coats. Do I need to SBR the wall first or just a mist of water?;Also what is the best way to secure the beads in place? Use some morter dabs?
great video mate whats your mix ratio and contents? do you use lime in it?
Hi Pal! I always mix 4:1 for the scratch coat and 5:1 with hydrogenated lime for the top coat. I have waterproofers for the scratch and Feb rendamix for the top coat which also has waterproofers in. That's the mix I use mate 👍
@@PlasteringForBeginners seeing as you can now edit RUclips uploads. Would you mind adding this info as text to it. It would be handy for everyone to just have this info on screen. I think this video pretty much explains everything else for this rendering type.
Very nice work, Thanks
Thank you mate!
Hi what beads do you use for external walls? Rendering a brick wall which runs into a block wall .flattened bricks and smoothed blocks but now want to finish it to a thickness say 10mm thick .don't want to put another 20 mm or so on.plastic better than gal steel ?
Diy'er so only want flatish surface before coating.
Making it look easy.. Thanks for this. Saved to my plastering playlist.
Really well explained bud keep up the good work what were the ratios you used for both coats and did you use any additives 👍👍👍👍
Hi mate. It was 4:1 for the scratch coat and 5:1 with hydrogenated lime for the top coat. I have waterproofers for the scratch and Feb rendamix for the top coat which also has waterproofers in. That's the mix pal 👍
